I have to say that I do not like this book because although it gives a good overview of engineering fundamentals, it does it on a rather low level. There was very little which was new for me. I have to add that I am 17 years old and in my school we have very strong physics classes. Maybe that is the reason. So if you are looking for something challenging. I would advise you to look elsewhere. But in other cases then it is OK.

I have used Metcalfe and Eddy's Wastewater Engineering from 3rd to 4th editions, and cannot think of a more comprehensive resource for all aspects of wastewater engineering from process design through to odour management through to water and sludge recycling.

The use of SI system in 4th edition is great and I agree with other users, the Bible is getting so big that it needs a searchable PDF to find references quickly.

The process equations have been updated to COD type design from older BOD standards, and allow for ease of process selection, with a good overview of strengths and weaknesses of each treatment type for attached growth, suspended processes and even advanced oxidation processes for removing remaining inorganics.

If there could be said to be a weakness perhaps there is one for tropical water temperatures of 32-35 degrees celcius, but this is dependant on the literature and research community due to lack of hi-tech development in the tropics.

I have tags on pages that are much used to speed access, wouldn't recommend students carry it as it is very big.

Unlike some expensive env engineering texts, this one is worth every penny.

So I was having a lot of problems with my Electrical Circuits class, and desperately needed help... I saw this book, said it contained all the basics, easy to understand, blah blah blah...

Unfortunately it was just like my textbook... so it didn't have a positive nor negative effect on me... it acts like sparknotes... simply putall of the equations in a smaller book...

So if you're trying to have something condensed, get it... if you're trying to understand, seek help at the school because there are no books currently available to guide you step by step

The idea was to have the essentials of AC/DC circuit analysis, linear circuits, electronic circuits, digital logic circuit design, electromechanical machines, and control theory in one handy outline. The problem is, any one of these subjects is way too complex and deep as it is presented in most universities for the book to be helpful for undergraduate electrical engineering students. Also, on the whole, this material is far from basic. The material on electromechanical machines and control theory is usually taught in junior or senior undergraduate courses.Thus, this book would be most helpful to a professional or someone returning to graduate school for a master's degree in electrical engineering who needs some review on material that they have previously mastered but possibly forgotten. Unfortunately, as the other reviewer pointed out, this book is chock full of errors, thus rendering the book pretty much useless in the problem solving department. If a revised second edition of this book ever comes out with corrections to all of the current errors, I would recommend it to the target audience I have already mentioned, but definitely not to undergraduate engineers who are seeing this material for the first time.

I'm presently using this as a textbook in an into-level EE class. The book is a great concept - give a book of problems and enough information on the theory to solve them, including some step-by-step examples. And, sometimes, it works well. What kills it are the repeated glaring errors in the answers it gives for the questions - so far, I'd venture to say that, after the first couple chapters, more then 10% of the answers are wrong, be it from swapping a sign someplace or an outright mistake in understanding on the part of the person who solved the problem. This makes the book uterly and totally unacceptable - it has as much potential to damage someone's knowledge of electronics as to teach the person. ... Read more

This book is unreadable. I'm just three chapters in, and I can't bear the thought of having to read more. Nearly every paragraph is inflated with buzzwords, obscure new phases and acronyms. The author drones on and on about archaic software models when a simple table and summary of each would suffice. Pressman writes almost as if he is trying to fill a word quota.

Before reading this book, I believed software engineering was dead. And after reading some of this book, I now know why: Software Engineering == Software Bureaucracy.

Potential buyers of this book might want to read the article "Software Engineering: An Idea Whose Time Has Come and Gone?" by Tom DeMarco.

This book was purchased as a required text for a master's level class, and I am highly disappointed in it.

The book broadly and superficially covers all software engineering concepts, and to the untrained reader might appear to be a comprehensive text.Just don't look too closely.If you know absolutely nothing about the software engineering process, and want to have a high level grasp of the uniqueness that is software, then this book could be of use.The descriptions do a good job of introducing SE concepts and theories, although some are dated.

If you are tasked with developing a software engineering strategy, or running a software-intensive project, or are looking to build a solid foundation and understanding of the software engineering process, walk away.Just walk away.This book introduces new terms, redefining widely and commonly used words for the software development life cycle and others.The entire SE body of knowledge uses certain words that students and practitioners get used to, and this author seems to change them around just to be different.Furthermore, the author interchanges these terms around, and is not consistent when referring to the same concept.Not something I'd expect to see after 7 revisions.

To be fair, I haven't read most of the book, and have only been using it for about three weeks in a course I'm taking.But so far, the book seems to just be about buzzwords and trends that are sure to pass with time.It reminds me of a management class I took two years ago, but in that class, the instructor even acknowledged that most of the things covered were just buzzwords and fads.I thought this class was going to be about design patterns and various best practices, but instead I'm force fed all this management and organization mumbo-jumbo.This book is also filled with a crap-load of idealized graphs and diagrams that aren't based on any real data.That kind of stuff always annoys me.

While I think it may be worthwhile to briefly cover these methodologies to get some ideas, actually following a methodology "to-a-T" seems like a bad idea, and could possibly cripple innovation and creativity.Most of the premises behind the ideas seem to be common sense any way.Of course a business should monitor its performance, try to constantly improve it's processes, efficiently allocate resources, etc... I don't need a book full of pre-packaged methodologies to tell me that.

Also, I haven't yet entered the "real-world" yet, so I may have no idea what I'm talking about.But I would probably hate working for a company that strictly followed most of the methodologies presented in this book. ... Read more

Dont expect it to read like a novel ....will require many readings and thinking before the light bulb goes off ... but beware.. a lot of the concepts cannot be easily applied in an organization that is not open to structured thinking that takes time and effort..

This text provides an excellent reference text in the hands of a seasoned systems engineer. The generation of system functional flow diagrams and cost performance trade analysis is covered in detail. However, I found no correlation with set theory in chapter 4 with systems engineering design process. In my review of the text, I have found most components of the engineering process identified and covered in various amounts of detail. This text does not stand on it's own with respect to covering all aspects of the engineering design process. But then, neither do other texts I have reviewed.

This book addresses systems engineering tools and methods needed for building complex systems.Our systems have gotten much more complex, more inter-coupled than they were decades ago --think of the recent (Summer '03) East Coast power failure. Systems Engineering tools, techniques, and education must progress to address the new complexity. This is why Buede's book is invaluable.He has digested much of the current state of thinking regarding systems engineering practices and concepts, and made them available.

I was required to purchase this book for a Software Engineering class. This is an incredibly wordy, unnecessarily lengthy textbook. While it is apparent that the author is trying to be witty, it shouldn't take 10 pages to define a term. In the fast-paced world in which we live, this book is unsuitable.

I used this book as the text in my software engineering class in the spring semester of 2008. When I was evaluating it for potential adoption, I did not read through it in detail, I looked over the chapter titles and subtitles, read the first few chapters and examined the exercises at the end of the first few chapters. As the semester progressed, I found myself wishing I had read further into the text.
As I moved through the chapters, I found myself mentally noting over and over again that topics are repeated. When the class was over, I asked the students their opinion of the book and they were unanimous, with no prompting from me, in saying that there is a great deal of repetition after the first chapters.
I have no complaint about the quality of exposition or the coverage of software engineering in this book. My reason for not continuing to use it in future classes is solely due to my belief that the size could have been reduced from the current 840 pages to around 600 pages with no real loss of content of flow.

This book is especially useful to me because of the chapters of software testing which are usually overlooked or hardly mentioned in other books.

I have found this book overpriced and wanting in many ways. I used it for self study and at least it is comprehensive. Other reviews point out the weakness in this approach and I agree to a point-- but, well did I mention it is comprehensive. It is far easier to research a given issue in more detail once you are aware of it, than to discover what you do not know via divine inspiration. Given that I am not taking a class, but doing self study, I personaly found it very useful in that respect.

Likewise, as an instructor, which I am not, I would find it usefulas a baseline offering to be supplemented with other materials.


The price, on the other hand is not acceptable. McGraw-Hill tiles have increased in cost almost 4 x over the last 10 years or so,and the material is not improved.

This book is great for learning about different types of tests and models in the software engineering world.I do find the book too wordy in some parts though.Some of the sentences said are not necessary because they are common sense.Overall though, if you are not looking for a book dedicated to programming and looking for a book about practices in the computer industry then I would recommend this book.

First and foremost, I have not read all chapters in this book. But from what I have read, from parts 1,2,4, and 5, I agree that the text covers too much and often says that much of the methods are subjected to the particular circumstances of an individual's projects. That is, while there are many ways to do a task, you and your team or company has to settle which one you're going to use. And this is understandable, while unpleasant.
The pleasant thing would be if there were a concrete solid step-by step instruction on how to do everything. But this is impossible, because various projects may pursue various paths in developing software projects. For instance, while one project has to be done quickly and information gathering is not as wanted, other project may require more time, being laid back, and have all little requirements and details laid out at the beginning.
I understand that author wanted to cover all aspects, all approaches, and various details, and that led to a text that is not the easiest and not the most pleasant to read. But, understanding the complexity of a task at hand, and the variety of methods and opinions surrounding the software engineering, I think this text was informative.
The little quotes inserted here and then, gave this text personal touch and made it less dry. I liked those. ;) ... Read more

I bought this book for my then teenage son who wanted his XBox to do more than what Mr. Gates wanted it to do. Phil astounded me with the skills he developed in soldering, mechanics, and searching for the resources he needed.

Bunnie goes into great detail to explain not just how to do the job physically, but weaves a tale of how Microsoft has attempted to secure the XBox and leads the reader along a road of computer hardware discovery.

Well it worked. Phil not only turned his XBox into a fully-functional linux box but he became inspired and this year graduated from college as a computer engineer.

I purchased this book because I would like to learn about reverse engineering without getting a degree.Tinkering with an Xbox, which can be purchased for less than $50, sounds like a great idea.The book, sadly, is short on actual projects to learn from.The vast majority is about hacking, reverse engineering, and legal issues related to these activities.The book is well written and the arguments for the freedom to reverse engineer and invent in your own garage beautifully argued.It made for a really great read but left me wanting regarding the original reason I purchased it.

This is an absolute MUST BUY for everyone who likes to tinker with electronic devices - it's like porn for hardware hackers :)

Bunnie's description of how he and the XBox hacking community came to circumvent the XBox's security infrastructure is a wonderful tale in itself. The fact that Bunnie describes the methodical approach taken, with its several false-starts and failures to its eventual success is a great lesson for hackers everywhere - a systematic approach (plus a smidgen of luck and more than a little inspiration) is generally the only way to overcome significant odds.

But this book offers far more than just the story of how the XBox was hacked and the ... ahem ... wonders of the DMCA - it is an invaluable guide to anyone interested in creating their own devices. The sections on soldering techniques, board manufacturing, etc., equipment suggestions, etc., is a boon to anyone who has an urge to create something rather than just dream about it.

I have been hacking hardware ever since I was 7 and I took apart my record player trying to work out how they managed to fit all four of the Beatles into such a small space! I have obsessively dismantled practically every electronic device I've ever owned and built several electronic devices from scratch more than I can count. I have a degree in Computer Science & Microelectronics and have worked on teams building missile guidance and weapon aiming technologies. And yet, I've learned more practical skill (as opposed to theoretical knowledge) from this book than my entire 1st year at college.

So, if you're interested in tinkering with hardware or are interested in how others do it, do yourself a favor and order this book now. You won't be disappointed :)

I've taught a quarter-long Manufacturing Processes course out of this text (and its predecessor) for four years, and plan to continue using it.This text presents a great overview of a wide variety of processes, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve.It also goes into reasonable depth with many processes.I do not attempt to cover the entire text in one quarter, however -- I use roughly half.

When asked on end-of-term evaluations whether they agreed with the statement, "The textbook was valuable in my learning experience," students consistently rated this text 4.1/5.0.The average score campus-wide for textbooks is 3.6/5.0.Anecdotally, the handful of students who actually bother reading the text come up to me and say, "It really is interesting and easy to read."

Yes, there are some errors which have been frustratingly carried over from the 5th edition, but you catch many of them with a first reading.They knock it down from 5- to 4-stars, but I'm still really happy with the text.

Sandel tries to make the case for limiting individual reproductive choice. His none-too-subtle agenda is to maintain the advantages of the genetic elites, such as himself, at the expense of the rest of society.

Sandel says he's against allowing parents to choose their children's genes. He assumes (correctly) that many social advantages (energy level, self-confidence, intelligence) are innate, and unevenly distributed.Secretly, he's happy that he can pass along his own traits (ability to focus for long periods, mild charisma) to his children.(I say "his children" to refer to the children of meritocrats generally.)But he dreads that the great unwashed masses will soon be able to alter their own genes to be more like his, since then his children would become less rare and special in their innate traits.

Sandel says "there remains something troubling with the ambition to control the genetic characteristics of the next generation".That's all very well for someone who's already born with the "gifted character of human powers" (i.e. the genes for success).But what if you're born with other genes?You'll never achieve as much social influence or status as Sandel and his kids.

Sandel worries that the "meritocracy, less chastened by chance, would become harder, less forgiving".Yeah, and meritocrats would also become more commonplace, leading to less social disparity in income and status.Today, corporations pay millions in salary and bonues to a rare cadre of super-smart, super-motivated genetic elites, who can in turn afford better lifestyles, better healthcare, and greater social influence (through political donations, ability to launch a national journal, etc).

"Changing our nature to fit the world," argues Sandel, "is actually the deepest form of disempowerment."Really?For you, perhaps.

I was very impressed with the thinking of Professor Sandel in this book.The best part was the last chapter, where in about thirty pages, he makes an eloquent case for embryonic stem cell research. While being respectful of the beliefs of conservatives who oppose it, he shows why their arguments are weak. I liked his analogy of the acorn not being an oak tree just as the embryo is not a baby, even though the oak was an acorn at one time. This is a serious, well-reasoned, intellectual book.

The book was an interesting read, but frustrating. There was a genetic determinism about the discussion that made the author's stand feel naive. Clearly the variation in many human features are constrained to a particular range by genetics, but this does not mean that any individual can be engineered to guarantee the development a particular trait. Even extremely pro-genes books like The Nurture Assumption leave an important role for environment in human development (Harris just doesn't think parents are a particularly influential part of that environment).

The gift argument is repeated throughout, but not supported very well. Sandel also discusses genetic modifications as arms races, but misses the fact that the "improvement" of human characteristics need not entail an arms race or a zero sum game. There are traits that have a value that is non-competitive. If research has found that people with a happiness score of 8-9 on a scale of 1-10 succeed most in life, it is correct to note that success in many fields is competitive. Yet, the feeling of happiness and enjoyment of life is not a zero sum game. Every human can enjoy this at the same time. If genetic engineering made us all 8-9 on the happiness scale, we would all benefit individually in our quality of life, though we would only be keeping pace with regards to competitive advantage. Again, Sandel misses this nuance and his discussions suffer from it.

The part of the book I felt was worth reading was the section regarding hyper-parenting. This was a point neglected in other books I have read on the subject, such as Agar's and Glover's. Nevertheless, the other books are far superior discussions of the subject with more exhaustive and nuanced discussions of genetic engineering.

I would advise against reading only this book when reading on this subject. This book should be read to offer another perspective after reading a more well rounded discussion like Glover's. As with any of the books I mention in this review, you should understand views on the role of genetics in development before reading the books. Don't expect the books to teach those details, though Agar's does contain good discussions regarding the fallacy of genetic determinism. ... Read more

This--this being the attitude encapsulated in Andrew "bunnie" Huang's Hacking the Xbox--is why a lot of people got into the computer industry in the first place. These people liked taking things apart and figuring out how they worked, then making them serve purposes they weren't originally designed for and sharing the new discoveries with others of like mind. Sure, Huang's book is about how to how to turn Microsoft's game console into a high-performance, general-purpose personal computer with a small price tag, and it contains lots of details about the how the heavily advertised gizmo is put together. But you can get the technical material on the Web. What's valuable about Huang's work is that he communicates the pure joy of taking the Xbox apart, figuring out how it works--despite its many designed-in anti-hacking features--and making it do new things. This book reads like the journal of a seventeenth-century voyage of discovery.

There's a wealth of information in these pages about how to disassemble and reverse-engineer electronics, and Huang is careful to show you what tools you need, and how to use them (don't worry if you don't know how to use a soldering iron--that's covered here). I bought this book for my then teenage son who wanted his XBox to do more than what Mr. Gates wanted it to do. Phil astounded me with the skills he developed in soldering, mechanics, and searching for the resources he needed.

Bunnie goes into great detail to explain not just how to do the job physically, but weaves a tale of how Microsoft has attempted to secure the XBox and leads the reader along a road of computer hardware discovery.

Well it worked. Phil not only turned his XBox into a fully-functional linux box but he became inspired and this year graduated from college as a computer engineer.

    Look, the joker who says this is a High School level text is dead wrong. Having been in the field for 10 years now and with a degree in optics, I tell you this is a very good text. No one book can make you a good engineer in any discipline, but lots of books help. The folks I know who are seriously involved in optics, all have this book. No one book is the bible of optics. Problem with "engineers" nowadays....not a broad enough background in engineering in general or even in their field...to specialized. Know your basics, get lots of books.

    Without doubt, this is the best general survey of optical engineering, in or out of print. The book shows both the author's broad experience as well as his ability to apply theory to practice and then tell others how to do the same. The book is far superior in its selection of topics and in its clarity and accuracy of presentation to the alternatives.This is definitely an optical ENGINEERING book, not an Optics 101 text for undergraduate physics students.The book is useful for engineers or scientists from other fields who need to learn some optics, and for experienced practitioners who need a reference and refresher on particular topics.To cite one example of the book's reliability, suppose you wish to use the Planck function to estimate how much optical power you can couple into an optical fiber from a quasi-blackbody source such as an incandescent filament.Smith's version of the Planck function is dimensionally correct and will give you the quantitatively correct answer, and his treatment of the Lagrange invariant will teach you the right way to think about the problem.Neither of those things is true of most of the alternatives.The book is focused mainly on image-forming optical systems, and only skips lightly over topics such as optical fibers and coherent beam propagation.Nevertheless, if you only buy one engineering book on optics, this should be it.

    Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Engineering is a perfect introduction to the field. It starts gently enough so that anyone with a basic high school understanding of chemistry and physics can easily pick up the quantitative and qualitative ideas behind the operations of subatomic particles. The graphics are an appropriate companion to the text and the indices and appendices are extremely useful for performing calculations. The only potential downside would regard the end of chapter problems tending towards a "plug and chug" nature.

    This is a required textbook for a class I am taking.Most of the examples are helpful.A few could use a little more detail.Being a required book, I assume most folks would be buying this for the same reason, required, not an optional purchase.That makes it hard for me to recommend, (or not.)Not bad for the type of book it is.

    This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

    I unfortunetly have used this book on several occasions.This book is so packed with info it makes it confusing.If this was four seperate books, teaching seperate catagories of trades this might be a good book, but its not.Trying to teach engineers, welders, drafters and machinists out of the same book, does not work.Dont waste your money or time on this book.Also from Version one to the newest version same info different chapters.What a waste of paper.

    After I purchased this book, I realized that the book looked very much like a sub-set of the 1200 page Engineering Drawing and Design by David Madsen published by Delmar.

    This is a very good text/reference book that is written very well for anyone who is looking to learn and to create engineering drawings. The book is very user friendly, with numerous illustrations and white area. The book covers the in-depth ASME drawing standards. If you are looking for a great book that covers both drawing and design, purchase the Engineering Drawing and Design book. It is more expense, but you get 500 pages of additional design information.

    There are many example solved problems, which is good because there is no Schaum's Outline for Materials Science and Engineering.Each chapter has an introduction, glossary of terms, summary, and an extensive problem set, including computer projects.Thankfully, the authors focus on applications, not theory (which is often bogus anyway).

    I found relatively few typos:one, a howler, is on p. 788, where the authors say "grain" where they mean "gram", and the symbol for specific heat should be in lower case, not upper case.

    There are many tables and diagrams.There are answers to the odd problems, and the index is detailed.One itemmissing, however, is a list of useful references/bibliography for materials scientists and engineers. I've used the '76 Materials Engineering Selector for many years--I don't know of any more recent publications, and it would be helpful if Askeland and Phule would provide an up-to-date list of sources for materials scientists and engineers.

    The material is presented as if you already have a strong chemical background.What information is there stops short of explaining it in any type of useful manner.It certainly is not practical information.I purchased it as a Supplier Quality Engineer of Gray Iron Castings and walked away with little that I could use in the REAL world.Metallurgists that I work with confirmed this.The professor of the college course in Material Science discontinued using this book because his student were walking away with very little and he was only referring to this $180 book sporadically as to not confuse the students. Save your money.

    Inside Front Cover:The characteristic exponent of ten for the speed of light, c, should be +8 or 8 and not -8.For the Fe-C phase diagram the labels of 'steel'and 'cast iron' on the %carbon-x-axis are reversed in position from what they should be. Polymer Chapter: 'PET' usually stands for poly-ethylene-terephthalate and not poly-ester although the first is maybe a type of the second.This might be a matter of different diciplines but 'PAN' here is said to mean poly-acrylic-nitrile while in the environmental field it means peroxy-acetyl-nitrate. ...
