5-0 out of 5 stars Classic textbook
It seems incredible that Cornell University Press has let this book go outof print. How hard could it be to produce an inexpensive paperpack photoreprint and market it as the classic it is?It's true that Comstock'stextbook is a bit out-of-date now: the original was first published in 1920and the latest revised edition dates from 1940.It stands to reason thatsome of the information in the book might be out-of-date now, and theblack-and-white illustrations can't compete with modern textbooks and fieldguides. But Comstock's 1,064 page textbook remains the best-written andsingle most useful natural science reference work in my library. Most ofthe information it contains has remained unaffected by the changes intaxonomy over the past sixty years, and Comstock's prose is incomparable:always clear and informative, matter-of-fact when it needs to be, rhapsodicwhen it can afford to be.Consider this paragraph, which occurs in themiddle of a meticulous introduction to the sphingid moths:

"Of allthe beautifully arrayed Lepidoptera some of the hawkmoths are the mosttruly elegant. There is a high-bed tailor-made air about their clear-cutwings, their closely-fitted scales and their quiet but exquisite colors. The harmony of the combined hues of olive and tan, ochre and brown, blackand yellow, and grays of every conceivable shade, with touches here andthere of rose color, is a perpetual joy to the artisticeye."

Please, Cornell, bring back Dr. Comstock. In the meanwhile, anyone interested in learning more about the world of insects should scourthe used book services for this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The first edition of this book, published in 1984, established itself internationally as a standard text in medical and veterinary entomology. This new edition retains the same overall aims and structure but has been thoroughly revised to take account of new advances in the subject. The main focus of the book is on the general biology of insects and the Acari (mites and ticks) of medical and veterinary importance, together with brief descriptions of their taxonomy and of the treatment of diseases they cause. The book is divided into three parts: the first provides a general introductin to the classification, structure and function of the relevant insects and Acari; the second covers, in seventeen chapters, the main groups of insects and acarines of medical and veterinary importance, from the Culicidae (mosquitoes) to the Ixodidae (hard ticks); part three then provides an overview of those diseases of which the pathogens are transmitted by insects or acarines. The book will continue to serve as a major reference text for students taking courses in zoology, tropical medicine, veterinary science, entomology and parasitology, as well as for professionals working in both pure and applied entomology. ... The volume in question is of fundamental importance to the history of entomology, particularly in relation to insect classification, but the buyer should know that it dates from the early 1800s and was one of the very first books on entomology. Free copies in pdf format are available on the internet, too, since the book is now in the public domain. Just let the buyer know that he or she is likely to be a century and some behind the times. The original citation should read: W. Kirby and W. Spence, Introduction to Entomology, 4 vols (1815-1826). ... Read more
