Great for those who don't focus on environment, but need to learn about it
Generic and simple. I took a required class in basic environmental engineering and was pretty happy with this book. It's simple to use and does not assume and prior knowledge of environmental engineering besides common sense. Everything is explained well and without indulging into the never ending and unnecessary details as a lot of text books do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author wasn't trying to push an agenda (something I thought came standard with any book dealing with the environment). All of the information was objective and discussed from a neutral "know what it is, and what it does, and why" perspective. The chapter about global warming actually almost seemed to downplay the artificial and hyped up urgency and extent of the issue by focusing on only on the numbers and nothing else. Not math intensive at all except maybe a few rates of growth/decay. Solid intro course book. However if you're not interested in the subject to begin with, this book won't change that.

Satisfied
A radio program mentioned this book, and if listeners wanted a free copy, just call them. Yeah, right! All copies were history by the time I called--I shoulda hit Amazon FIRST! Within no time, I got my own copy. So it wasn't "free" but at a ridiculously low price, and with quick turnaround time, I can't complain.

Who else wants to be a good steward?

In this thin volume, the Acton Institute has assembled a superb group of scholars from the Judeo-Christian tradition to speak their minds on what it means to be a steward of God's creation. The book consists of three position papers, one each by the Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant representatives, that explain their own viewpoints. It also includes the text of the Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship, which resulted from inter-faith dialogue between the three groups. The result is an imminently readable book that challenges us to be good stewards of what God has entrusted us with.

All three traditions emphasize the importance of the doctrine of creation. Regardless of the process itself, Genesis tells us that humans are the apex of God's created order and have been given the role of steward in it. Thus, we are to use, cultivate, and develop environmental resources as responsible individuals.

I found it particularly interesting that each tradition's position paper addressed the issue of over-population. I suppose this is important because it seems that every year we hear in the news about the "dangers of too many people" on earth. The book thoroughly trounces the absurd over-population argument once and for all. Other "catastrophe" positions, such as climate change alarmism, are debunked as well, most specifically in the Protestant position paper. The science itself is addressed and the duplicity of the ideas are exposed for what they are: anti-human hogwash.

Another prominent feature of the book is the affirmation of the free market and property rights as the proper means of environmental preservation. Each tradition understands that command-and-control economics cannot possibly result in environmental protection. In fact, it is progress on a free market that drives people to cleaner and better methods of production.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed most the Jewish tradition's position paper. I thought their analysis of Torah and their logical exposition of the Old Testament was nothing short of stellar. On the other hand, perhaps I should not have been so surprised. After reading the section and reviewing some of the key points, I noticed that my favorite Rabbi, Daniel Lapin, was part of the group that wrote the paper. I guess he gets around!

Libertarian Christians need to become more aware of environmental issues, but that awareness needs to go beyond merely knowing arguments against global warming. We need to have a proper Biblical understanding of stewardship and communicate it accordingly. The Acton Institute's little book has done the Christian community a great service with this book, and I highly recommend it to Christian readers looking for an accurate account of environmental stewardship theology.

Putting "conserve" in "conservative"
"Environmental Stewardship in the Judeo-Christian Tradition" is a slim volume about caring for the Earth as drafted by Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant leaders. It's a surprisingly accessible read. It's from the Acton Institute, and the book comes across as a collaborative effort--because it is. With the current debate on global warming, soaring gas&food prices, and drilling in ANWR, "Environmental Stewardship" is quite relevant. How can one rightly balance human needs with care for the environment? While some radical environmentalists are ecstatic at high gas prices, there's the issue that it's unduly causing hardship to the working poor.

"Environmental Stewardship" is fascinating in that it looks at the issue from three viewpoints- Jewish, Catholic and Protestant. The rabbis discuss, among other things, that eating meat is morally obligatory, since animals that eat other animals are superior to those that eat plants. One can imagine how this would be handled at VegNews. Eating meat, per se, isn't a mitzvot (good work). There are the kosher laws forbidding pork&shellfish, so eating meat isn't always objectively good from the Jewish standpoint. Since lions,tigers&bears eat other animals, does that make them equal to humans? Then again, the Jewish arguments on the environment are interesting because they're so open to debate. The Catholics argue from a more authoritative standpoint. They discuss fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence-- virtues missing in the current debate. Of course, they speak of artificial contraception as a poor answer to dealing with global population. Finally, the Protestants discuss stewardship mainly from a Calvinist perspective. Many Protestants are emergent and non-denominational, so this article is in a sense anachronistic.

"Environmental Stewardship" makes a fascinating read, discussing inconvenient truths about balancing care for the Earth with human needs.

Surprisingly, this book is quite interesting. I needed it for my environmental studies course at college. There's some interesting information that made me think about the daily choices I make and how I could make a difference to our environment.

Not very sophisticated or deep.
I bought this book for use as an introductory science textbook for non-science majors at university level.Having been under the impression that it was fairly good (based on the table of contents and past review by others), I was very disappointed in the elementary level that it presented its material: more like a junior high presentation than even a high-school level.Thus, I sent it back, and was even more disappointed when Amazon charged me for the return shipping, saying that it wasn't their fault.So, if you buy this book, expect lots of color, but not much depth.

Are you Serious?
I am surprised by "K. Pring"'s review. This book is well written? It is very much the opposite. Deckers defines the same words in many different ways in separate chapters. His definitions and examples suffer from extreme tautology, and the book shows a clear bias for evolutionary / behavioral psychology. The same ideas, phrases and sometimes sentences are repeated exhaustively. The only concise writing is in the chapter summaries. He makes assumptions without evidence. We have had to read the whole book except one chapter, and so far it is very disappointing. One of the worst textbooks I have had.

Excellent narrative with good environmental science info
This book is an excellent overview of the complex ecological, sociological, economic, and technological history of the century when humans became a dominant force shaping the planet Earth. The science is sound, the narratives compelling, and the writing superb. I chose it as a text for my introductory environmental science students instead of a standard textbook. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of how humans changed the planet in the twentieth century.

Review for Something New Under the Sun
J.R.McNeill, author of Something New Under the Sun, states "it is nearly impossible to see what is happening until it is inconveniently late to do something about it" (358). In his book, McNeill discusses the major changes to the environment, which occurred throughout the twentieth century. Focusing on the four spheres--lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere--McNeill acknowledges that although we may not be in the midst of an environmental crisis, the current means by which humans are living are not ecologically sustainable. He also claims that there are many consequences for some of the environmental changes that have occurred. Throughout the book there is an overarching theme that humans are a main cause of many of the environmental problems of the twentieth century, and as humans, we are the only ones with the knowledge and power to fix it.

McNeill begins his book by concentrating on the lithosphere, the earth's outer shell of rock, and its transformations in the past century. The pedosphere, which is the soil, essentially earth's skin, is located between the lithosphere and atmosphere.According to McNeill, the erosion of soil is primarily caused by humans and ultimately harms them because humans get "97 percent of their food from vanishing soils" (49).

The next sphere, the atmosphere is the "thin gaseous envelope that surrounds the earth" (51). In the early twentieth century, coal combustion, which came from industries and dwellings, primarily caused air pollution, the main topic associated with the atmosphere. Since the development of the automobile road traffic has been the largest source of air pollution worldwide. McNeill also considers the proposed laws and regulations, which have been implemented regarding air pollution. He claims that laws relating to air pollution are difficult to enforce, because "economic development took precedence over other concerns" (83). In addition to air pollution, McNeill covers climate change and its causes as well as the stratosphere.

From the atmosphere, McNeill moves on to the hydrosphere focusing on water use and water pollution in the twentieth century. Water has always been primarily used for irrigation; however people today use water much more frequently than in the past. After the development of new organic chemicals, water pollution started becoming severe, having a dramatic impact on lakes and rivers and killing "tens of millions of people in the twentieth century" (147). Although there are safe water provisions, they focus more on protecting the big cities, not entire countries. Cleaning up polluted rivers and lakes can sometimes be an easy task; nonetheless most times it is difficult, especially in poorer countries. One can only hope that oceans do not get polluted because if they do, it will be almost impossible to reverse the damage.

Lastly, McNeill concentrates on the biosphere. In this section, agriculture is a major issue, along with discussions on deforestation, the decline of whales and fish in oceans, and bioinvasions. Although the consequences of many of these things have yet to occur, McNeill predicts them to be extremely severe and expects humans to find a solution to these problems, in spite of the fact that he is unsure of the different aspects of such a solution.

Overall, Something New Under the Sun provides a well structured and organized critique of many of the environmental changes, which occurred throughout the twentieth century. McNeill does an excellent job in organizing his information, carefully dividing up his sections and clearly stating his opinions and own viewpoints.One positive component of the book is that he applies his concepts to the context of cities and countries so the reader can view the problem from a smaller scale and multiple angles. For instance, when McNeill wrote about water pollution he focused on the Ganges River in India and the measures taken to contend with the pollution of that specific river. This helps the reader comprehend the concepts better as opposed to if they were to be told in a general synopsis of the current circumstances.

Another positive aspect of Something New Under the Sun is the fact that it ties together very nicely. Many times, McNeill will refer to something discussed in a previous chapter. This is very beneficial to the reader, because it shows that what they previously read about actually matters in the context of the entire book. For example, he frequently relates pollution to past statements.Although he specifically discusses pollution in his section on the atmosphere, McNeill reverts back to it in almost every chapter. This helps the reader understand the drastic nature of the problem

One minor problem with the book is the amount of detail regarding many of the topics. While reading Something New Under the Sun I was sometimes overwhelmed by the quantity of detail included. The in-depth qualitative analysis made it difficult to summarize the book concisely. Although some specifics are helpful in understanding the information, too much detail can ultimately end up confusing the reader, which was sometimes the case in this book.

Anyone interested in today's environment and its changes should think about reading Something New Under the Sun. This book takes a specific look at how humans have altered the environment in the past 100 years and the measures that need to be taken to change it in the future. Although McNeill can't pinpoint exactly what can be done to change what has happened, he does have a few potentially effective ideas that could prove to be successful. He declares that every person can make a difference, and he asks everyone to look at what has happened in the past, because we can use the past to change the future.

I like the book because of the historical perspective on the detrimental effects of the environment with selected topics, although I am preferring my other book which tells the stories of different places on the what the effects of the environment has had over the years of human civilization. Where we went astray and what we might do about it
Boom. This is a biggie. Yowzah! If you want a clear view of our specie's impact on our world there is no better place to start than here. J.R. McNeill offers a balanced and comprehensive look at the century which changed everything, and his title, contradicting Ecclesiastes' assertion that nothing is new, says it all. The core idea here is that in the last century humanity moved beyond affect of local systems to dominance of the biosphere. We are everywhere. McNeill covers our impact on all of the life on our planet, from his prologue discussion of economy, population and energy, to his deeper analysis of soil, air, water and the whole of living systems. He offers clear views of the demographic and technologic forces which have shaped our modern world. Most illuminating of all are the complicated ways in which each change we have wrought has brought both destruction and remediation. Oil, the number one eco-villain inrecent history, particularly when pumped through internal combustion engines, has also cleaned up city air enormously when it replaced coal and wood for heating and power generation. It also eliminated the need to remove 10-15,000 horse carcasses from average large cities each year and saved the great whales from extinction. Nuclear energy, an utter failure economically and with wastes which will be our generation's longest lasting heirloom, at least doesn't pollute the air. Population growth has had enormous impact on environmental damage, but less than I would have estimated as a percentage, and in some places it has even permitted improvements impossible without many hands. We are, in his words, the "rogue primate" which became smart enough to threaten every other life form on the planet, from smallpox virus to blue whales. Our success has paradoxically been very good for the viruses that cause the common cold and for rabbits. From the general to the specific, whole systems to individual tools (automobile, chain saw) McNeill has achieved a grasp of how and what we did, and tells the story masterfully. For readers who took up my recommendation of A GREEN HISTORY OF THE WORLD (Clive Ponting, St. Martin's Press, 1991), this one is better (and Ponting's work is one of McNeill's sources). Bingo. ... Not really worth waiting for
Waited too long for this book to arrive in an envelope with a handwritten address - as if it came from someone's home.Listed as almost, or like new - and it most certainly was not - it even had highlighting on pages, something that should automatically kick it out of that category.It was used, and overpriced.My first experience of a misrepresentation with Amazon - very disappointed.

Public Health environmental
Terribly boring. The diagrams and pictures explain everything, and the unnecessarily long chapters re-explain everything in excruciating detail. I can only read for about 25 seconds before falling asleep. But it is very thorough and makes things easy to understand. The diagrams are helpful, and the glossary in the back is nice. Unless this book is specifically required, try to find a more interesting one!!

Roa's Environmental Science activities book
This book has a variety of activities and labs that are simple to set up and in some cases, are rigorous in analysis.It is an excellent resource.

A Gift for the Enviro Teacher
This activities kit contains 37 relevant, engaging, and relatively challenging activities for high school students. As a first year enviro teacher, I was so thankful when I discovered this book at the library. It divides activities by the following units: human issues, land use issues, wildlife issues, water issues, atmospheric issues, and energy issues. Even though I can see the point of the reviewer who rated this book a 1 out of 5, I would argue that since environmental science is an interdisciplinary course this book finds a decent balance between the physical science and social science issues of the class, especially for the non-AP course. I previously noted that I thought this book was relatively challenging, and I said this because I believe this book attacks those higher order thinking skills on Bloom's taxonomy, e.g. application-evaluation. Where as other lab books can be very cookbook-ish, and only tackle the lower level skills, like define and identify. Regardless of your teaching philosophy, I believe this book is a must have, if not as an aid for laboratories and "science" lessons, it can serve as a great engagement piece for your units.

abused book
This book came to me in poor condition, with pages torn and missing and the cd nowhere to be found. I had to tear out or tape in hanging pages and reshape the book by weighting it down with heavy objects for a couple days.

New as promised!
The book arrived brand-new, just as promised, and it came in a timely manner. The price was extremely reasonable, too.

Slow delivery, Questionable Condition.
It took several weeks for the book to arrive and when it did it was, in my opinion, in worse condition than the description claimed. It wasn't dysfunctional, but if you are a stickler for the quality of condition I would be wary or question the descriptions given. Then again, it could have been a one time thing and I was just a little disappointed a chunk of the pages fell out when I opened the book.

I used this book for years in teaching environmental ethics.I believe it is the single-best text out there for such a class.However, that price is astounding, and for the first time in a decade, I have switched textbooks.

The contents are almost worth it, though, and richly interdisciplinary, collecting together economic, biological, religious and philosophical perspectives.I highly recommend this for those who want to know what a nearly perfect environmental ethics textbook would look like, and who want the best regardless of the price.

I lament the necessity of not inflicting such a cost on my students.

This book was not relevant or useful for the Environmental portion of the FE.I passed, but no thanks to this book (unfortunately).

Helpful resource
This book was a helpful resource for preparing for the FE exam.Without it I would not have known what to expect on the environmental section of the exam.

Environmental EIT guide
This book did not help at all.They basically just explained the formulas in then Environmental Engineering section of the reference manual (which you probably have in textbooks anyway) and had some practice problems relating to those formulas.However, the actual test pulled mostly from Civil Engineering and the problems were nothing like the ones in this book. ... Good start, but environmental studies probably won't morph into environmental engineering career...
What's this about the first 3 reviews being advertisements for "EnvironmentalCrossing dot com."Oh well.

This book is two thirds job opportunities, and one third how to represent and present yourself for getting a job.That last third is fairly good advice for anyone, whether you are interested in an environmental career or not.

The authors focus on five general environmental job tracks:

- environmental education
- environmental policy, planning, and management
- environmental technology
- environmental sciences
- environmental engineering

As I mentioned in the title of this review, throw out environmental engineering if you have an environmental studies degree.Environmental engineering, like civil engineering, is a demanding 4-5 year program of study.It ain't gonna happen.

The environmental sciences and technology tracks might be useful, but then your degree should be focusing on environmental science, and not environmental studies.

I sense a lot of students being interested in environmental education, but the book talks a lot about middle and high school positions.A teaching certification or degree is important here.I'd add environment-related communication careers (writing, public relations, journalism) here as well.

That brings us to environmental policy, planning, and management.This twenty page section could have been greatly expanded, because I see a lot of opportunity here for environmental studies majors.There are career opportunities in both government and non-governmental organizations here, as well as a track for environmental studies majors to get a graduate degree in law, public administration, or even business administration.

Best hint for applying for job?More and more employers are asking you to post your resume on-line.Don't be fancy.If it looks scrambled when the prospective employer opens it up, your chances are scrambled as well (p. 28).

This was a helpful book.It really details how to make a comprehensive resume.Also it educates on average salaries oft different kinds of jobs, and has other statistics. I've also found that http://www.EnvironmentalCrossing.com is a useful website for finding jobs.They only have jobs from employer websites, and they also have far more jobs than I have ever found on any other job search website.

Decent book, other resources more useful
My mom surprised me with this book, but I have to say that http://www.environmentalcrossing.com has been the best resource in my job search. They've got jobs geared towards what I'm looking for and it was so much easier than trying to sort through all the junk on other job search sites. Since all of the jobs are from actual employer websitse you don't get any of the scam jobs that seem to be the majority of other sites content!

They have tons of jobs to look through, more than any job board I've previously looked at. EnvironmentalCrossing uses only jobs listed from employer websites so I have a better chance of getting a real job than most other places.

Good environmental chemistry book
This text was required for a Water and Wastewater chemistry class, but the information contained in it, far surpasses what was needed for class. I kept this book as I can see myself using it again in the future.

Great Environmental Chem Text
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized.Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!

Good presentation of a broad topic.
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying tounderstand an environmental problem, especially if the readers backgroundin chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.
