Product Description

Rosenbaum’s classic, comprehensive text once more provides definitive coverage of environmental politics and policy, lively case material, and a balanced assessment of current environmental issues.

Notable revisions include:
• A completely revamped energy chapter covering conventional energy policy as well as a comparative examination of alternatives to current energy production.
• Expanded discussion of current U.S. climate change policy with attention to the role of the states, the impact of global environmental politics, and emerging technologies on policy alternatives.
• Analysis of the Obama administration’s energy agenda and its profound differences from Bush administration policies and the practical difficulties of creating an effective political coalition in support of the new policy agenda.
• Greater emphasis on executive-congressional relations in the policy-making cycle.
• Examination of changes in the environmental movement, with particular attention to newly emerging cleavages over energy and climate issues.
• A thorough updating of all policy chapters, including an examination of such topics as “mountain top removal,” the emergence of Bisphenol A as an endocrine disruptor issue, and the “new NIMBYism.”

New and revised tables, figures, and other data illustrate key environmental information while a new, detailed timeline frames the initial chapter’s historical narrative of evolving environmental policy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best, often earthily relevant currenttext on environmental policy - but a new approach is needed
There may be confusion about Amazon's listed reviews of Rosenbaum's book because the 7th and 8th editions share the same reviews - at least during my examination (Sept. 6 2010).

Let me first counter a curious "1 star" review by "Easy Reader" of Rosenbaum's writing style."I found this text extremely poorly written.... I looked through the entire text for a single example of a clearly written and concise statement and was disappointed."

I find often interesting dynamics behind books that garner conflicting rave and condemning reviews. So I don't dismiss outvoted dissenters. In most cases ideological differences are involved. However, in this case it's writing style!

Could Rosenbaum's book be a best seller and have gone through seven earlier editions if he were a bad writer? In fact, I find Rosenbaum's writing style the most clear, candid, earthy and least affected by political correctness of all writers with whom I'm familiar (I have around 3,500 references on my EndNote database for policy literature).

On the other hand, the evolution of U.S. environmental policy since the late 1960s includes such labyrinthine detail and complexity (the U.S. now has more than 650 laws directly or indirectly relating to environmental issues) that any book dealing with the subject can hardly avoid confusion. So I wonder whether Easy Reader's problem with Rosenbaum may really be with U.S. policy (first exposure to a book on this subject)? If so, he or she may be on target - but it should be the policy, not Rosenbaum.

Colorful, insightful and telling descriptions or literature citations of what has being going on in the U.S. abound in Rosenbaum's book. Some examples:

1) "Light truck regulation, especially, has become a `third rail' political issue... Americans - even ones who fancy themselves as environmentalists - have fallen in love with trucks"

2) "At least one agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, seems almost incapable of conquering a historical addiction to `cooked' BCAs" [BCA refers to Benefit-Cost Assessment]*

3) "Experts ... can be caught up in the emotionally and politically polarizing atmosphere of ..disputes. [Their expertise can be] reduced to one more weapon in a political arsenal".

4) "NIMBYism will continue to be tough, stubborn, and durable, its ranks crowded with well-educated, socially active, organizationally experienced people.....many public policy discussions become dialogues of the deaf ..."

The reason I refer to the desirability of a fundamentally new approach for environmental textbook writing is precisely the almost endless list of inefficiencies, failures, and damaging public conflicts that Rosenbaum describes. These increasingly include NIMBYism, evidences of regulatory and sociopolitical obstructions to renewable energy and other progressive efforts in the U.S. What are almost universally omitted in all U.S. texts to date are foreign experience and the fact that the U.S. conflict over environmental and natural resource policy is unique among advanced nations.

A new approach focusing on historical developments from a more universal perspective would allow chaotic U.S. developments and details to be seen in the light of more successful policies of other advanced nations. Giving each major regulatory area or statute around which controversy has roiled (Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act amendments, Endangered Species Act, Superfund Act,) and subjects like regulatory economics, precautionary principle, risk assessment, nuclear energy independent treatment leaves many students and even experts with the feeling that environmental policy and the U.S. are basket cases - there's little hope for the future.

My own conclusions from the book cited below are that there's light at the end of the tunnel - but not until we take off America-centric blinders and can see it.

*My historical research (Manheim, The Conflict over Environmental Regulation in the United States...... Springer 2009) suggests that USACE standards of objectivity were consistently high before 1950. They became more arbitrary as a consequence of the serendipitous events of the 1960s and later.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow!
I paid a lot extra for one-day shipping...and five days later it's still not here! I expect a refund on shipping.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult Read
I found this text extremely poorly written. Run-on sentences and excessive use of adjectives were rampant making it difficult to ream the meaning out of most of the sections. I looked through the entire text for a single example of a clearly written and concise statement and was disappointed. Textbooks are for instruction, not for the demonstration of the writer's proficiency with a thesaurus. And they are certainly not a contest to see how many different thoughts can be crammed into a single sentence.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING SURVEY OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
I am a former professor who, since 1980 has worked in the private sector and then government, for the past 15 years on environmental issues. Now I hope to teach again, about environmental policy. After rereading many books and catching up on new publications, I just read (cover to cover, in September 2001) the 4th edition of this book.It is great! The best introduction to environmental policy that I have seen.If I do teach, this will definitely be the main book, supplemented by shorter readings on legal fact-finding processes and criteria that impact environmental policy (environmental law is, in my opinion, more important than the attention it receives here).I strongly recommend this book, and am confident that the forthcoming, fifth edition will be as good as its predecessor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Enjoyable Textbook...

Product Description
This analysis of U.S. environmental policy offers a conceptual framework that serves as a valuable roadmap to the array of laws, programs, and approaches developed over the last four decades. Combining case studies and theoretical discussion, the book views environmental policy in the context of three epochs: the rise of command-and-control federal regulation in the 1970s, the period of efficiency-based reform efforts that followed, and the more recent trend toward sustainable development and integrated approaches at local and regional levels. It assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the new approaches and places these experiments within the larger framework of an emerging trend toward community sustainability.

Toward Sustainable Communities assesses environmental policy successes and failures at the subnational, regional, and state levels and offers eight case studies of policy arenas in which transformations have been occurring—from air and water pollution control and state and local climate change policy to open space preservation, urban growth, and regional ecosystem management. It discusses the various meanings of sustainability and whether the concept can serve as a foundation for a new era of environmental policy. The second edition has been substantially updated, with five new chapters (including the chapter on climate change) and all other chapters revised and shortened. It is suitable as a primary or secondary text for environmental policy courses and as a resource for scholars and policymakers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview & Bibliography!
This text, by an established eco-critic of literature, does a wonderful job surveying the whole of ecocriticism, and the environmental literature movement. From introducing major works and collections, to important key and pioneering figures, Buell provides the reader with a solid foundation of the different factions, philosophies, and agendas that are enmeshed under that one umbrella term.

He is careful to consider American, British, and other ecological works and scholars, showing how they work against and with each other in various ways.
One of the most helpful visuals he gives in understanding the diversity of this movement is his idea of two axes.Left to right axis has the following poles: ecocentrism & anthropocentric ethics.Top to bottom axis: health of physical environment & social welfare or interhuman equity.Eco-criticism, he continues, can land anywhere on this axis, giving an idea of the tensions and divergences of the critical stance as a whole.

Although this is a great "introductory" book, it also has a wonderful bibliography that I am using extensively to fuel my own research. As added bonuses this book is a smooth read (oh, such a relief in academia), has a great index, and even a somewhat useful glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A positive-themed manifesto of means to balance differing agendas into a more unified, and therefore stronger movement
The Future Of Environmental Criticism: Environmental Crisis And Literary Imagination is a scholarly summary of the distinct critical practices that constitute "ecocriticism" today. Written by one of the world's leading theorists, who traces the ecocritical movement to its roots in the 1970's and its coalescence in the 1990's, The Future Of Environmental Criticism Asks such bold questions as: Why has interest in environmental literary and cultural studies risen so rapidly in recent times? Can the emphasis upon preserving nature of earlier ecocriticism be successfully reconciled with later ecocritical issues of environmental justice? The Future Of Environmental Criticism draws from past and present reality to predict the directions in which future ecocritical movements will flow, and offers a positive-themed manifesto of means to balance differing agendas into a more unified, and therefore stronger movement.

    Product Description
In recent years, scholars in international relations and other fields have begun to conceive of security more broadly, moving away from a state-centered concept of national security toward the idea of human security, which emphasizes the individual and human well-being. Viewing global environmental change through the lens of human security connects such problems as melting ice caps and carbon emissions to poverty, vulnerability, equity, and conflict. This book examines the complex social, health, and economic consequences of environmental change across the globe.

In chapters that are both academically rigorous and policy relevant, the book discusses the connections of global environmental change to urban poverty, natural disasters (with a case study of Hurricane Katrina), violent conflict (with a study of the decade-long Nepalese civil war), population, gender, and development. The book makes clear the inadequacy of traditional understandings of security and shows how global environmental change is raising new, unavoidable questions of human insecurity, conflict, cooperation, and sustainable development.

    Product Description
This is a much-needed and clearly argued account of what has gone wrong in our thinking about the environment. Written by one of our leading environmental thinkers, it is a compelling exploration of the contemporary ecological crisis, its origins, and the cultural illusions that lie behind it. Val Plumwood argues that historically-traceable distortions of reason and culture have resulted in dangerous forms of ecological denial. They have had a widespread effect in areas as diverse as economics, politics, science, ethics, and spirituality, and appear in the currently dominant form of globalization. Cutting through the "prudence vs. ethics" debate that has stunted environmental philosophy, Plumwood analyzes our ethical and spiritual failures as closely linked to our perceptual and prudential failures to situate ourselves as ecological beings. She argues that in the process, we gain a false idea of our own character and location, including an illusory sense of independence from nature, making us insensitive to ecological limits, dependencies and interconnections. Environmental Culture presents a radically new picture of how our culture must change in order to develop an ecologically rational society. Drawing on a range of ideas from feminism, democracy, globalization and post-colonial thought, it is essential reading for anyone interested in the environment and our place in it.Amazon.com Review
Environmental Culture: The Ecological Crisis of Reason is a frontal attack on the irrational assumptions that drive Western society's progress toward ecological catastrophe. Val Plumwood maintains that "the dominant forms of reason--economic, political, scientific, and ethical/prudential--are failing us because they are subject to a systematic pattern of distortions and illusions," distortions that are blind to ecological value. Plumwood aims to expose the conjurers' trick that has gotten us into our predicament. With aplomb and precision, she traces the historical and cultural roots of our reasons for dominating nature.

Environmental Culture is the kind of rigorous philosophical analysis that will fortify the intellectual body of environmentalism. Unfortunately, her prose occasionally lapses into postmodernese, which, for many readers, will obscure her otherwise careful thought. On the other hand, Plumwood's impressive familiarity with philosophy, political theory, and ecology makes her a sophisticated and captivating thinker. And she writes with a sense of urgency that is appropriate for the large-scale ecological destruction being wrought by our current systems. Ultimately, she recommends a new rationality and ethic that can restore the world, one based on fundamental shifts in our thinking, such as expanding our ethics to include other species, and developing a place-based spirituality. Plumwood's prescriptions may be harder to swallow than her compelling critique of our failure of reason, but they point the way toward a world healed of its ecological crisis. --Eric de Place ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Val Plumwood's new way of thinking for new way of being with nature
Dr Val Plumwood, one of Australia's original and creative environmental philosophers died from a heart attack at her home, Plumwood Mountain in NSW on 29th February 2008. Her lifetime contribution to philosophy, feminism and democracy is sincerely articulated by Freya Mathews (La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia) @[...]

Many philosophers are concerned with a better way of reasoning other than the adversarial and hierarchical modes that have dominated our Western culture. Val Plumwood's professional and personal quest was to explain and overcome this institutionalised flawed reasoning. Her convincing critique of western philosophy in her 'Environmental Culture: The Ecological Crisis of Reason' provides the foundation for her arguments in the early chapters of this book against our contemporary rational justifications of our androcentric and anthropocentric hegemony over nature, women and indigenous cultures. Plumwood then goes on to construct an argument for a better way to reason that builds on and acknowledges our existential indebtedness to what has been subjugated in order to live fulfilled lives in and with nature.

1-0 out of 5 stars IDK!?!?!?!?!
I ordered this book over a month ago and still have yet to receive it. I don't know why I never received the book. The book itself I hear is a good book though. I bought it for class and my classmates said it wasn't a terrible read

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
I'd recommend this book especially to any Earth/Environmental Science Majors. I actually just read this entire book cramming for an Environmental Planning exam (I was originally just going to skim some chapters). I wish I'd been reading it all along! There's a lot of cross-over with a Geology class I'm taking too.

Chapter 3 is one of the best explanations of the form/function(process) relationship in terms of the environment that I've ever read. I also found Chapter 9 very insightful concerning drainage basins. The diagrams and pictures are incredible. There is just enough technical scientific detail in the book to get a really good understanding of processes without overloading you with too many complicated equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Physical Geography & Env. Planning share common ground
This may be one of the best introductions to environmental planning for geography students interested in the application of physical geographic techniques. When inquiring minds ask how a Geography major like myself ended up doing septic plan review as a county Environmental Health Specialist I simply point to Marsh's chapter on waste disposal and describe the necessary physical parameters familiar to physical geographers (soil types and percolation rates, groundwater levels, slopes and topography, surface water, geohazards, mapping, etc). There is something for everybody in this book and you don't have to be a geography major to benefit. A very practical text.

Although I bought this book used, I didn't realize that meant it would be falling apart. Not only have a I found numerous typos in this book (ridiculous seeing as it's the 6th edition), I find that the book is only helpful if you want numerous statistics thrown at you and no real analysis of the effectiveness of American environmental legislation. The chapters are exceedingly long and usually contain nothing more than minimal information on the laws, a plethora of useless statistics, and a paragraph or two of analysis. From a student's perspective, this is probably the WORST textbook I have used in college.

4-0 out of 5 stars astonishing
I go to Harvard law school and I have found this book to be helpful in my field of study. Although i also study criminal justice law I have now become interested in environmental and this book has been impressive. This book is a life saver. It was classy and sophisticated. Please go buy this and I hope to see some new challenging faces at Harvard. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book!
I've used "Environmental Law" by Nancy K Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman in two seated classes and one online course. It is an outstanding text for describing the parameters of our legal system to students. Those to want a glorified HAZMAT approach to environmental law (or want to ignore the legal system) might not like the book. I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding book.
I've used this book in two seated classes and one online course on environmental law. If you want a glorified HAZMAT course or have decided that the way our legal system actually operates doesn't matter, then look elsewhere. This is not a science book (nor should it be). If you want a text that students find easy to read and that provides comprehensive coverage of environmental law and our legal system, this is your book. ... Read more

Apply the principles of probability and statistics to realistic engineering problems

The easiest and most effective way to learn the principles of probabilistic modeling and statistical inference is to apply those principles to a variety of applications. That's why Ang and Tang's Second Edition of Probability Concepts in Engineering (previously titled Probability Concepts in Engineering Planning and Design) explains concepts and methods using a wide range of problems related to engineering and the physical sciences, particularly civil and environmental engineering.

Now extensively revised with new illustrative problems and new and expanded topics, this Second Edition will help you develop a thorough understanding of probability and statistics and the ability to formulate and solve real-world problems in engineering. The authors present each basic principle using different examples, and give you the opportunity to enhance your understanding with practice problems. The text is ideally suited for students, as well as those wishing to learn and apply the principles and tools of statistics and probability through self-study.

2-0 out of 5 stars too simple
I teach APES and have read the APES Princeton Review cover-to-cover. There is no comparison.I imagine if you waited until the last moment and had done essentially noreview, would be satisfied with a 3 or less on the AP test, Smartypants might help you see the basics of the basic - much like a conceptual chemistry book might assist you with the real deal. But why would you bother when there are other review books and material online that are so much more thorough?I felt this book was over priced and woefully inadequate: it had big print, was double spaced and a mere 117 pages, including tests. And speaking of test questions... you'd be much better off using your textbook's companion website than using these questions.I'm giving Smartypants a thumbs down.

5-0 out of 5 stars It got me a 5
I just got my AP scores in the mail and I got a 5 in APES. Seriously, all I did was read this cram book a couple of nights before the AP exam. I did keep up with all the reading/note taking throughout the year in my class, but for the AP exam this is all I looked at. It's a really good review. But if you are basing your score entirely on a cram book or doing independent study, I suggest reading a text book, and using this before the exam just to brush up. And it's a really quick read. I recommend it to everyone. It's really good.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's... simply not enough.
The AP Environmental Science Exam has made, somewhat of a boost in difficulty. After taking both the 2004 and 1998 practice exams, I was relatively confident that the Smarty Pants Guide contained everything that I needed for the test. However, when I took the test just a few days ago (07') the test was substantially more detailed than I expected it to be...

It's alright, perhaps, for the previous exams, but it's outdated now... don't get it for a review of basic concepts, at best.

1-0 out of 5 stars More APES junk!!!
This review book was such a disappointment that I can hardly find the words to describe its uselessness. It was a collection of note pages of material any teacher would skim over. The review questions provided were minimum. When I received this book, I paged through it, and immediately asked authorization to return it back to Amazon. I have been teaching AP Environmental Science for six years out of my 37 years of teaching and still have yet to find an adequate, complete review book for this course. For the quality and the price of this book, I would probably consider it on the very bottom.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time. Unprofessionally written and unhelpful!
After purchasing this book I was disappointed and even insulted by the pure nature of this composition of such dreadful and unprofessional work. Perhaps it was my high expectations from such highly remarked reviews but I have never been so ashamed for purchasing a book in my life. Being a respectable professional in the environmental science field, I question how this book can help anyone out at all, with the construction of the exam today. This book will do little if any in preparation for the exam, my advice is to do more research or be prepared to waste 1 ½hours of your life on this short and unprofessional piece of work. ... Product Description
Finalist, 2007 C. Wright Mills Award given by the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Every year, nations and corporations in the "global North" produce millions of tons of toxic waste. Too often this hazardous material—linked to high rates of illness and death and widespread ecosystem damage—is exported to poor communities of color around the world. In Resisting Global Toxics, David Naguib Pellow examines this practice and charts the emergence of transnational environmental justice movements to challenge and reverse it. Pellow argues that waste dumping across national boundaries from rich to poor communities is a form of transnational environmental inequality that reflects North/South divisions in a globalized world, and that it must be theorized in the context of race, class, nation, and environment.

Building on environmental justice studies, environmental sociology, social movement theory, and race theory, and drawing on his own research, interviews, and participant observations, Pellow investigates the phenomenon of global environmental inequality and considers the work of activists, organizations, and networks resisting it. He traces the transnational waste trade from its beginnings in the 1980s to the present day, examining global garbage dumping, the toxic pesticides that are the legacy of the Green Revolution in agriculture, and today's scourge of dumping and remanufacturing high tech and electronics products. The rise of the transnational environmental movements described in Resisting Global Toxics charts a pragmatic path toward environmental justice, human rights, and sustainability. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info but too much jargon
Chapters 4 thru 6 are the most worthwhile parts of this book. These chapters provide good info about the global links and struggles of environmental groups, especially between activists rooted in the more well-off industrialized countries and poorer third world countries, around issues like dumping of toxic wastes, the poisonous effects of the socalled "Green Revolution" (which was basically a market-growing initiative of the petrochemical industry), and the growing problem of dumping of worn out or obsolete electronics gear.

I think it would have been helpful if he'd gone more into the toxics associated with manufacturing of electronics. Most of this manufacturing has been moved to the third world in part to escape tougher environmental laws in "first world" countries (as is pointed out in the book). These chapters also highlight a number of the victories that these cross border movements have been able to achieve.

Unfortunately the book is disfigured by excessive amounts of unclear academic post-modernist jargon and an endless array of acronymns. The author doesn't have an adequate analysis of what capitalism is, and ends up substituting the hopelessly vague concept of "modernity."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking Through Race Transnationally in Toxics Trade
Pellow's book is an original attempt to highlight race in the context of the global trade in toxic and hazardous waste material. He traces the connections between social justice movements around the world and the ways in which they put pressure on notorious toxiccorporations. He rightfully points out that despite the fact that the urban social justice movement in the US has successfully theorized race, this has not been done for the transnational market in toxic matter. He therefore brings in the racialized politics and ideology at work in transnational institutions that have thus far failed to address the pressing issue of toxic dumping in the developing world, particularly in countries of the global south inhabited by people of color who are poor. ... The book I thought I was ordering was the Introduction to Environmental Engineering, what I actually got was the INTERNATIONAL edition of this book! Basically the same, but there are no BG units (English unit system, feet, lb, etc) in any problems, examples or tables/graphs.

Luckily, my teacher is giving us copies of the assigned problems and for all other purposes (like studying and understanding concepts, as well as SI unit examples) this book is fine, but just know what your getting. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice, not necessary
This is a wonderful, lovely book with some very nice ideas in the Waldorf-tradition style. It is not, however, necessary to own it, especially as there are some books that are still in print that contain much of the same ideas. The Children's Year, by Stephanie Cooper et al, is one such book. But this book does have very lovely ideas and descriptions to go along with much of the content, she discusses many of the activities and crafts (and the "why" of those) more than any other book I've seen. So I'm glad I have it, but if you're on a budget or looking for something with more ideas, then I suggest looking at something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I have many books.Lots of them sit on the shelf and come out as needed. This is one that does not even go back on to the shelf. It sits at my computer with a couple of "must haves" and I refer to it several times a week. You will not be disappointed with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book: Seems like a compilation of lots of timeless ideas
I love that this book teaches how to do things yourself, from drying apples and churning butter to making your own simple toy ribbon wands and leaf crowns. Rather than having to rely on a store for something new, this book encourages teachers to instruct children on how to do it themselves. Many of the activities use natural materials that could be acquired during a short nature walk.

NB: Check this out at the library, but do not pay the exorbitant price ($100) for a used copy, especially since the author has a similar, reasonably price book in print called Earthwise.Earthwise: Environmental Crafts and Activities with Young Children

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to add to your home library!
I have had this book for years and love it. The book is divided into four sections, one for each season. Each activity is marked for a particular age and above, such as 3+ or 4+.

I just opened the book to gather more summer activity ideas. We have made the butterfly crowns in years past and my girls had so much fun with this one. I learned how to make dandelion chains here which we do every year now. My girls made the bark boats about a month ago and had a lot of fun with it. Next on our list is, Parachute People!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Activities
I checked out this book from my library and we had such a wonderful time with it that we promptly bought it.

    Product Description
The traditional landscape genre was radically transformed in the 1960s when many artists stopped merely representing the land and made their mark directly in the environment. Drawn by vast, uncultivated spaces of desert and mountain as well as by post-industrial wastelands, artists such as Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson moved earth to create colossal primal symbols. Others punctuated the horizon with man-made signposts, such as Christo's Running Fence and Walter de Maria's The Lightning Field. For Richard Long, journeys became works of art while Dennis Oppenheim immersed his entire body in the contours of the land. In this broad survey of Land Art, Brian Wallis discusses the key artists, works and issues that define Land Art historically, as well as its later ramifications.

This book fully documents the 1960s Land Art movement and surveys examples of Environmental Art to the present day. Earthworks, environments, performances and actions by artists ranging from Ana Mendieta in the 1970s and 80s to Peter Fend in the 1990s are illustrated with breathtaking photographs, sketches and project notes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Artists working within the landscape
The newest addition to Phaidon's Themes and Movements series covering the most important art movements of the twentieth century, is //Land and Environmental Art//. Since I first heard of the English artist Richard Long in the 1970s, I've been a fan of what's come to be called Land Art. Beginning in the '60s, artists disenchanted with contemporary abstractions in big cities like New York and London took to the open spaces and created works that integrated earth and ecology, and were fundamentally incapable of being shown in a downtown art gallery.Long, for example, incorporates walking into inaccessible, unpopulated places like the Himalayas, where he alters the landscape with stones in geometric configurations, which he then documents with maps and photographs.

The book is divided into two sections: a survey text charting the most significant characteristics of Land and Environmental Art, and then a compilation of the key works. Robert Smithson's great bulldozer works, including the Spiral Jetty, Christo and Jeanne Claude's iconic wrapped landscapes, and Andy Goldsworthy's precious short-lived works with found materials, are all amply represented in this well-designed book loaded with spectacular photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good survey of the Land Art movement in its context
There are more, and better, images in the Taschen Land Art books, but this is the best source for a serious discussion of the importance and place of the art movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Land Art Book.
In the 1960's maverick artists stopped merely representing landscapes and turned to making their mark onto the environment itself.Christo/Claude flew onto the scene with sweeping bravado. And we are familiar with De Maria's surreal 'Lightning Field' and Smithson's iconic 'Spiral Jetty'. By the way thanks to global warming the waters have receeded and the Jetty is back!
This fantastic big book sweeps through more than 100 land artists and their various far ranging methods of impressing upon nature. Captivating large photographs are perfectly wed to the text explaining the process of how the pieces were planned and produced.
There are a fair number of environmemental art books on the market. Leave it to Phaidon to present the best one. . . . . Note; another great one is 'Land Art in the US...' by Malpas.
