I used this book for an introductory differential equations course.With the help of this book, I was completely prepared for everything the professor threw at us and more.

Some of the problems are simple and should help to reinforce the basic concepts learned from another book.Learn the fundamentals from some other book (or even a professor), and refine your thought processes using this one.There are some basic explanations of concepts and problem types, but most of the space is devoted to problems and solutions, as you may have guessed.If I had trouble with a problem from another book, I could almost always find a similar one in the REA book.A few problems are extremely difficult or involved, but the book leads you through every step of every problem.I was blown away by the depth of a few problems, but following the reasoning in this book really helped me to develop a better "feel" for the subject.

Yes, the font looks like something from your mother's typewriter, but the book is very sensibly organized into a (huge) number of chapters that should more than cover any intro-level DE course.My test reviews consisted of working problems from this book and doing little else, and I've never felt more confident going into exams.

If you're willing to put in the time, this book is probably one of the best course-related resources you could ever spend your money on.It would also be a good reference for someone who occasionally wants help with troublesome problem types.

This is an excellent supplement to any Differential Equations class.It starts out with easy and straight forward problems and progressively gets to the more advanced problems.All steps are worked out in an easy to understand way.Most importantly this book shows the algebraic steps in obtaining solutions, which is ussually where students have trouble.This book is a must have for any science major.

If you are studying DEs, get this book! It beats the usual text books that only contain solutions to selected problems, namely the ones that the professor does not assign or examine you on. This book is comprehensive and contains stratagies for attacking the various problems you will encounter in undergraduate DE courses. It even contains problems and solutions to Partial Differential Equations, Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, not just ODEs!

Having just taken this course from Professor Gustafson, I can say, with complete support from everyone in every PDEs class he's taught as of yet, that this book leaves a lot to be desired.There is absolutely no mention of separation of variables, the section on greens functions forgets to mention at all what they're used for, and further how to do anything with them, and numerous other grave omissions.I feel a more apt title would be: "An overview of PDE's for the advanced student, and interesting applications."So perhaps, for the right teacher this will be a fine book, but beware, you are going to have a lot of work filling in the large gaps the book leaves.

Also, thought this has no bearing on the quality of the book, he has a strange obsession with the number 3.

I recently taught a one-semester course out of this text, having chosen Gustafson's book after a careful review of most of the standard introductory PDE texts.The feature which distinguishes this text from its competitors is its organization, which is based upon the author's belief in the pedagogical style of reinforcement through repetition.Within the first 50 pages, the reader has already seen a first treatment of (i) separation of variables and Fourier techniques, (ii) Green's functions, and (iii) variational (or energy) methods. One then repeatedly studies each of these standard solution techniques in greater depth at later points in the text.By contrast, with many alternative texts one can read 300 pages and still know nothing about Green's functions or variational techniques.Additionally, Gustafson writes so clearly that the text could be used for independent study.His selection of problems (3 Problems and 3 Exercises at the end of each section)reflects careful, deliberate choices.One is not overwhelmed with endless pages of repetitious "drill" exercises. I am surprised no one has ever written anything about this book.

I bought the book about 2 years ago in addition to book by Farlow. I have used Farlow and Colton for primarily learning the subject and used Strauss more as an "Excercise Book".

I prefer to follow other books and visit this one on a topic-per-topic understanding instead of following chapter to chapter ordering in this book. Chapter 1, 2, 3 is quite the good materials. However from 4 on, the subject material order is a little weird.

I first used this book a long time ago (1988) when the third edition of it just came out, while I just got a chance to write a review on it much much years after that. It was a required graduate textbook at an Ivy League college. It discussed in depth the finite difference technique applied to the parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic types of PDEs. The thing that I really like about this book is, besides having not too much details on mathematical derivations, it gives examples on how to do the calculations by hand. Thus when one would like to "translate" all these calculations into a computer program one could easily test the results (or expected results). Of course there are a lot more books out there talking about finite difference technique but they are perhaps 20 bucks or more expensive than this book. The only minus about this book is it was printed in soft cover, even though mine is still in a very good condition after almost 16 years! I recommend this book for those beginners on finite difference method. I am currently using this book for one of my course. ... Read more

Like all of Vladimir Arnold's books, this book is full of geometric insight. Arnold illustrates every principle with a figure. This book aims to cover the most basic parts of the subject and confines itself largely to the Cauchy and Neumann problems for the classical linear equations of mathematical physics, especially Laplace's equation and the wave equation, although the heat equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation are also discussed. Physical intuition is emphasized. A large number of problems are sprinkled throughout the book, and a full set of problems from examinations given in Moscow are included at the end. Some of these problems are quite challenging!

What makes the book unique is Arnold's particular talent at holding a topic up for examination from a new and fresh perspective. He likes to blow away the fog of generality that obscures so much mathematical writing and reveal the essentially simple intuitive ideas underlying the subject. Arnold's geometric point of view of differential equations is really intriguing. These lectures treat the subject of PDEs by considering specific examples and studying them thoroughly. By this approach the author aims at presenting fundamental ideas in a clear way. However, the interetested reader should be acquainted with some geometric ideas of differential equations.

OK, I did not read the book, just browsed through the pages. My first impression is that this is an excellent book, like most of Arnold's books. It is not trying to cover the theory of Partial Differential Equations, and this cannot be done in a single book anyway - just selected topics on a very accessible level. The geometric insight is excellent and even a specialist can benefit from that. I highly recommend this book to undergraduates (and higher) that are passionate about analysis.

I will update my review after I actually buy the book, I understand that I am not very helpful at the moment.

Update: I read parts of the book and I still like it a lot. I however found to be aimed at more advanced readers. It is an excellent book to complement any of the standard PDE texts. ... Read more

I took ODE class 15 years ago and never had to use it in practice. Now, due to a nature of work I have to go back and refresh my knowledge. This is excellent book for student or anyone who wants to understand how to solve and apply differential equations in real life.
My old professor used dry, formal approach to just manipulate equations and never really taught real life use cases.
Unlike most of textbooks I've seen, this book is self contained, no question is left unanswered. I mean really no question.
If topic is not covered in the main text, author provides all the necessary information in appendix, you will even find introduction to vector algebra and complex numbers. You will never see vague explanation or do it yourself calculation for any formula derivation that is not trivial.
Excellent work. I wish I had a chance to use this textbook long time ago when I took my ODE class.

This is primarily a response to the startling denunciation in one of the other reviews.

In the last analysis, it isn't hard to learn the particular tricks you need to solve everybody's favorite exam questions--Tennenbaum or the Schaum Series books (Lipschutz?Spiegel?) will help you do that.Many students should go that route, particularly those who have a firm commitment to being able to perform at a minimal level, without being distracted by concepts at all.(This is humor; I do not subscribe to this theory personally.It is sad that I feel obliged to point this out...)

Slope fields are a MAJOR tool to understand what is going on in a differential equation.The fact that software is now easily able to produce slope fields is a FABULOUS advantage to living in these times.Another tool is phase space; I shudder to think what the reviewer would think of that!A semester of classical mechanics should cure people who do not understand the value of phase space.

Unfortunately, most instructors --including myself-- continue to feel obliged to set examinations in which slope fields do not figure largely.A test containing lots of graphics is beyond the scope of what most instructors are willing to do.(I think I've just persuaded myself to try it!)As a result, the typical student is more concerned with the algebraic aspects of the subject (which are admittedly fascinating), rather than the conceptual aspects of the subject.This probably includes the vast number of low-level engineers who do not aspire to use more than 6.7 differential equations in their entire lives, and so do not need to get involved in the concepts too heavily.

At the more advanced level, I suspect that engineers do certainly need to engage in the more subtle and sophisticated aspects of differential equations, dynamical systems and control systems.Unfortunately, they probably do not know what they will encounter as adults while in their sophomore years!Trust me: ODEs are a lot more than algebra.

Ricardo's book is what I intend to adopt.I hope my students will not review the book until the end of the semester!

I found this book to be of limited usefulness primarily because it falls into the same trap that seemingly all math textbooks in the US have; over dependance on technology.Over and over again the author tells you to use the mathematic software package of your choice to explore slope fields of some equation.I really don't care about the slope field, maybe I will after I understand how to find particular solutions to nonhomogenous equations (which was not explained well at all imho).Overall, the text doesn't spend alot of time explaining things, and when it does it's not very enlightening.I found the problem sets lacking and the solutions manual wasn't much help. A much better book is the Dover Ordinary Differential Eqn book by Tannenbaum.First published in 1964 (iirc) it's a far superior book.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING WORK, FROM A BRILLIANT MIND
Off course, what else can anyone expect from the mind of Dr. Ricardo??? I just wish he had already published this book when I was still in my Undergraduate years as a Physics Major. Or perhaps even better: When I used to sit in his classroom. I owe my mathematical skills to the same teaching techniques I see when I read his book: The ability of Dr. Ricardo to explain complex subjects in a simple way, so different from many other instructors, especially at the undergraduate level. That is, not only the ability to get students to see the practical application of mathematical concepts, but to motivate them to do interesting work. I took my differential equations with another teacher, using the De Prima textbook, (a classic) long before Dr. Ricardo published his work. Nevertheless, I just purchased his book, it is part of my library and will remain there as a source of teaching ideas. Reading his work was like if I was still seating at his calculus class.

I took a class using this book my freshman year while also taking a 400 level Math class at the same time. Needless to say, I didn't have a lot of time to focus solely on the homework for this class. The book was clear and gave adequate examples. I feel that most people probable have complained about this book because they didn't give the lessons and examples a thorough reading/understanding, as is a common cause of dislike of a text. This was a great book for an intro class to linear algebra. My one reason for giving this book a 4 rather than a 5 is that the problems weren't challenging enough. I thought that most questions could be answered after only a thought or two, rather than careful contemplation and study. ... Read more

I bought a copy of this new book and I have its old version with Hirsch and Smale as its only authors. Main differences between these books are some new chapters covering chaos and the exercises. Old version has better chapters dealing with linear algebra.I find this new version hard to read and it leaves many details to be filled by the reader. I would say that the new version is still a good choice for a second course in ODE or supplementary text for a graduate course. I gave it four stars.

This is a great introduction to the next stage of differential equations after a first course.Devaney is a master of presenation, and makes everything seem easy.It is not as encyclopedic as some other books on this material, such as Arnold and Perko, but it is easier to read and still covers the most important advanced material.

the two books by hirsch smale, one with devaney, seem like good books, but I am not crazy about either, at least from the few pages one can search online here.

the latter book with devaney just seems a dumbed down version of the earlier book by the two more famous authors.i expected that earlier book to be far better, but found to my regret that the two books actually share almost the same first page, and the main difference noticeable in the early going is that the 2 author work is poorly written, and the 3 author one is not written much better.

it is clearer but seems to be talking down to the reader in an annoying way.so neither is the absolute pleasure to read that the wonderfully written text of arnol'd is, or the classic of hurewicz.i would skip these books and get arnold and hurewicz instead.

You should be aware that there are two similar books with similar titles by the same authors. The old edition is a hardcover all green book by Hirsch and Smale called:

"Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems and Linear Algebra"

The second with the lorenz attractors in yellow on the cover is by Hirsch, Smale and Devaney and is called:

"Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems and an Introduction to Chaos"

Now, that may be obvious to you, but it is important to note that because those are VERY different books (which I have both of right here). The 'old' one is a more theoretical text that mainly addresses linear systems and is organized more like a math monograph than a contemporary (i.e. with pictures and examples) textbook. It is difficult for most people. The newer version is COMPLETELY different and is written for a more diverse audience. It starts with linear systems but then goes into nonlinear systems and discrete systems. It is somewhat similar in character to Strogatz's Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos. If you do not have a very strong abstract theoretical type of math background I would not recommend you start learning about differential equations from the "old" edition. You will find it very difficult. If you are used to a general abstract presentation of results you should be fine. For the NEW edition the level is very different. I would guess that courses in multi-variable calc, elementary diff eq, and linear algebra (if you understood them) would be sufficient preparation. I like this book.Right from the beginning, Taylor uses concepts from smooth manifold theory to obtain results in a coordinate free fashion (on a Riemannian/Lorenz manifold) when possible.At the same time, he will go to coordinates when necessary, or even revert to R^n when stronger results are possible there.As an added "bonus" the book contains surprisingly few errors, or at least I found less than usual, so maybe I'm getting slow!

I didn't find this to be an introductory (as in first year of grad school) level book.The proofs are often given in less detail than those found in the standard introductory graduate texts.Reading and understanding this text requires knowledge of Real Analysis and smooth manifolds/differential geometry at the introductory graduate level.Fourier transforms and distributions are built up from scratch, but the treatment is quick and probably assumes you have some previous knowledge.Note that my opinion is formed after using this book for self-study, so you can probably relax the prerequisites slightly if this book is used as part of a course.

Another point worth mentioning is that the exercises are often quite easier than verifying the individual proofs in the chapter.

Why not 5 stars?I found the book and chapter introductions to be quite uninspiring and not very useful.He essentially lists off the material that will be covered with no thought to motivation.I like to read something about why one particular approach is necessary or better or just different than another approach.Simply listing off concepts to be covered has little meaning if one has no idea what those concepts mean!The discussion of results is also rather sparse, sort of like Rudin.

well even if it doesn't cover all the methods of solving PDE. it still a great book, it explains the origin of each problem and the way to attack it.
i think this book is goo for someone who is seeking to understand PDE but not used a course book (other books are better for courses).

In my opinion, courses in partial differential equations should be offered more often in undergraduate curricula. Many of the problems encountered in the world are solved using partial differential equations rather than ordinary differential equations. This book would be a good text for a course in partial differential equations; it begins with a chapter on the physical origins of partial differential equations and contains descriptions of the mathematical models of the physical events. The sections of the chapter are:

*) Mathematical models
*) Conservation laws
*) Diffusion
*) PDEs in biology
*) Vibrations and acoustics
*) Quantum mechanics
*) Heat flow in three dimensions
*) Laplace's equation
*) Classification of PDEs

A small set of exercises are included at the end of each section, although no solutions are included. The level of discourse is rigorous, yet well within the bounds of the advanced undergraduate with calculus and a course in ordinary differential equations behind them. If you are scheduled to teach or are pondering a course in partial differential equations, then this is a book you should consider as a possible text.

Very little explanation of how to apply the theory to the problems at the end of each chapter. Not good for people who are not super math students.

This book has two flaws. The first is the classic pitfall of mathematicians trying to reach an audience who are interested in mathematics largely as a tool rather than an end in itself. The author or instructor teaches a pure math course and inserts "application chapters," or pauses between boardfuls of algebra to mumble, "...and this represents a vibrating drumhead." The second is that the book is just too thin. The explanations are very brief, the material is arguably not complete, and there aren't enough examples or problems. While I share the author's taste for minimalism, PDE's are a big subject, and you need a bigger book than this to do them justice.

A general problem with applied PDE courses and books (including this one) is that they fail to give adequate consideration to finite difference methods. Any course in the 21st century should give at least parity to these methods, as they are immeasurably more useful in the real world than eigenfunction expansions or Duhamel's principle. I give the book three stars because the author has succeeded to the extent possible given the constraints he placed upon himself, but I can't recommend it to someone who actually wants to learn applied PDE's; instead, I would recommend DuChateau and Zachmann for a comprehensive and understandable treatment for $20 less.

On the other hand, if you want physical intuition and running code, pick up Garcia, "Numerical Methods for Physics." If you are a mathematician trying to figure out how to write an applied book, drop everything and buy H.M. Schey's "Div, Grad, Curl and All That." ... Read more
