Revolutionary Book
One of the most startlingly things I learned in this book is the possibility of trained detector dogs revolutionizing medical practice. The current research suggests that dogs trained to detect breast cancer from breath samples may actually exceed the detection level of radiologists using mammography. The patient simply needs to breathe into a tube which the dog then sniffs. No painful breast compression, no risk of exposure to radiation, and the dog works for biscuits and the chance to play, not $400,000 or more like a radiologist. If we're worried about skyrocketing medical costs in America, maybe the people calling the shots should read Helton's book. Dogs are already used to keep us safe at Airports and to prevent people from smuggling in drugs or foreign pests.The use of dogs in medicine could be revolutionary, thanks Dr. Helton.

Useless without other resources, (and then still not worth purchasing!)
I am a professor who teaches ergonomics and had purchased this book in the hopes of finding some new ideas to introduce into my labs.Unfortunately, this book is completely useless unless you already own (or can borrow) the other books that they continually reference in their lab descriptions.(e.g. Barnes, 1980, and Konz, 1990).These books are 20-30 years old, so why should the authors assume that you have access to these other textbooks?Their methods and descriptions of the equipment set-up, refer to these other books, so unless you have them, you won't be able to even try the labs.

I actually had access to both of these books, but even with those references I find this lab manual to be worthless.They "simplify" formulas without ever stating that they are "rounding" the constants, and don't explain where these formulas come from.(Saying that 1.96 squared = 4, may be OK in some settings, but students will never associate "two standard deviations away from the mean in a normal distribution" if all they see is the constant "4".)Also when talking about machine utilization vs idle time, "p" is typically used to denote a "proportion" so the values would be bounded between 0 and 1.This book assumes you are using a percent, but never explains that "p" is not being used differently.Without taking the time to breakdown the formulas, I would have never figured out why the values were so wildly out of the ball park.

I can't see this manual being useful for anyone:it doesn't give enough information for a novice to learn much, and there are so many inconsistencies and incomplete thoughts that an expert is better off making a lab exercise up on their own. ... Read more

"Applied" is the important word
This book helps you become a competent practicing ergonomist in a real setting, not an ergonomics theorist, researcher, or teacher (well, maybe a teacher).The author clearly has a lot of real world experience in the job of corporate ergonomist, and has worked at creating detailed but not overwhelming processes, procedures, and content matter.This is an unassuming little grey book but it was the most helpful book I ever used when learning to "do" ergonomics.Base your approach to your work on it, and gradually add detail on the tools and circumstances of the industry you're working in. ...
