Book Description
This book encourages reflection upon the inescapable ethical dimensions of the conduct of research. Gregory explores how ethical concerns inform not only the conduct of research but how they enter into the very decision to engage in a piece of research, the interpretation of data and what is done with research findings. Issues arising from the reflections of the text will be brought to bear upon the character of the researcher, the place (if any) of codes in practice for researchers and whether if in deference to ethical considerations there are limitations upon what can be countenanced in the name of research. ... Book Description

There has been a consistent interest in ethical issues arising in the context of HIV research. Ongoing international and multi-site studies and the continuing search for an HIV vaccine continue to prompt examination of how this research is conducted, how participants are engaged in the studies, and the obligations of the researchers to individual participants and their communities during the course of and following the conclusion of the research.

Each chapter is authored primarily by one of the editors (secondarily by the other) and is accompanied by one to two case studies. Each case study has been authored by an HIV/AIDS researcher with experience in the subject matter of the chapter. The case studies will focus on an actual ethical dilemma encountered by the researcher, with suggestions on how it can be resolved. Each chapter addresses relevant issues and emphasizes particular ethical principles.

Editorial Review

Book Description
This textbook for instruction in biomedical research ethics can also serve as a valuable reference for medical professionals and bioethicists. The 149 cases included in the book are grouped in nine chapters, each of which covers a key area of debate in the field. Some of the case studies are classics, including the famous cases of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (in which subjects with syphilis were not given treatment) and the Willowbrook hepatitis studies (in which institutionalized subjects were intentionally exposed to hepatitis). Others focus on such current issues as human embryonic stem cell research, cloning by somatic nuclear transfer, and the design and function of institutional review boards. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction that places the issues raised in context; this is followed by a number of cases (each of which is no more than a few pages). Study questions meant to encourage further discussion follow each case.

After an introductory discussion of the history and tenets of ethics in medical research, the book's chapters cover oversight and study design; informed consent; the selection of subjects; conflicts of interest; the social effects of research; embryos, fetuses, and children; genetic research; the use of animals; and authorship and publication. Following these chapters are appendixes with the texts of the Nuremburg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki, two key documents in the establishment of bioethical standards for research. Also included are a glossary, a table of cases by general category, and an alphabetical listing of cases. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description

This book examines the theoretical and practical aspects of ethical dilemmas in qualitative research.

To many researchers, `ethics' has been associated with following ethical guidelines and gaining ethics approval from academic bodies. However, the complexities of researching private lives and placing accounts in the public arena increasingly raise ethical issues which are not easily solved by rules and guidelines. This book addresses the gap between research practice and ethical principles that inform it, focusing on responsibility and accountability in applied feminist research practice.

The book explores ethical issues in research from a range of angles, including:

- Access and informed consent

- Negotiating participation

- Rapport

- The intentions of feminist research

- Epistemology and data analysis

- Tensions between being a professional researcher and a `caring' professional

The book includes practical guidelines to aid ethical decision-making rooted in feminist ethics of care.

Ethics in Qualitative Research is designed for academics, professionals and students carrying out research, and is a timely teaching text for ethics in research across the social sciences.

From the author: Three national Canadian granting agencies jointly developed and promulgated a common set of guidelines for the treatment of human subjects in all research. These guidelines apply equally to humanists and social scientists as well as to clinical and biomedical researchers. This paper reports on the 2001 response to a national questionnaire to assess compliance of humanists to the new Canadian regulations, the impact of the regulations on humanists, and recommendations to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The preliminary findings indicate a gap m the knowledge of the humanities' research community with regard to the policies and procedures of the ethical review of research involving human participants and the understanding of the Research Ethics Boards impact on the nature of research conducted by the humanities.

Book Description
This title is directed primarily towards health care professionals outside of the United States. It departs from the usual principles-based approach and instead takes a predominantly consequentialist (harms and benefits) approach. It aims to be free of abstract philosophy, but will use the analysis of cases and a reasoned approach to examine alternative arguments. Whilst the book deals with issues in some depth it uses plain language and many clear examples of good and less good practice to illustrate points. It is at a level useful to both beginning and more experienced researchers. ... Read more

Book Description

This volume is a collection of chapters all contributed by individuals who have presented their ideas at conferences and who take moderate stands with the use of animals in research. Specifically the chapters bear of the issues of: notions of the moral standings of animals, history of the methods of argumentation, knowledge of the animal mind, nature and value of regulatory structures, how respect for animals can be converted from theory to action in the laboratory. The chapters have been tempered by open discussion with individuals with different opinions and not audiences of true believers. It is the hope of all, that careful consideration of the positions in these chapters will leave reader with a deepened understanding--not necessarily a hardened position.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal rights arguments without the horror stories
This is a terrific book for people who are interested in the topics of animal rights and experimenting on animals, but who don't wish to be assaulted with horror stories of animal abuse. (It seems that much of the animial rights movement feels that the only way to win new adherents to their cause is to treat people like children, appealing solely to one's emotions.)

The writers and editors of this book treat the reader with respect.

Before reading it, I was firmly entrenched in the "only humans have rights" camp. But after reading this book (which was a gift -- I would never have known of its existence otherwise), I find myself questioning my orginal inflexibleness on the subject. I wouldn't call myself a convert just yet, but I do have a much more open mind on the subject, and I'm thankful for that.

And, best of all, you needn't be a scientist or have an advanced degree to understand these essays. ... Read more
