Product Description
The beautiful and enigmatic black-on-white decorated pottery of the Classic Mimbres culture of southern New Mexico is well known to archaeologists and artists alike. But prior to the florescence of the Classic Mimbres around A.D. 1000, the inhabitants of the Mimbres Valley played a generative role in the cultural and historical sequence of the region as a whole. These Early Pithouse period villagers have received comparatively little attention from archaeologists in recent decades. Now, in Early Pithouse Villages of the Mimbres Valley and Beyond, Michael W. Diehl, Steven A. LeBlanc, and colleagues publish for the first time a complete account of the excavations and artifacts of two important Early Pithouse village sites and a synthetic analysis of the environmental context and culture-historical framework of the Upland Mogollon region of the North American Southwest.

The McAnally and Thompson sites, two villages located along the Rio Mimbres in the heart of the Upland Mogollon, contain architecture, artifacts, and other remains of the earliest relatively sedentary horticulturists to occupy the region. The lifeways of these people--their subsistence practices, their knowledge of construction and of the manufacture of stone tools and pots, and their rules for social interaction--provided the foundation for nine centuries of continuous occupation and use of the Mimbres Mogollon area. Dating from A.D. 200 through 1000, the sites yielded information that suggests that, over time, Mogollon pithouse villagers invested ever-greater effort in constructing and maintaining their dwellings, intensified their reliance on maize agriculture, and increased the efficiency of their maize-grinding tools--all indicators of longer periods of occupation at these sites.

Based on their surveys and excavations, the authors of Early Pithouse Villages of the Mimbres Valley and Beyond develop a new chronology for the occupation of the region. They also discuss competing models of Upland Mogollon Pithouse period life-styles, architecture and residential mobility, paleobotanical data, ground stone and chipped stone artifacts, ceramics, osteofaunal remains, and miscellaneous artifacts uncovered at the two sites. Diehl and LeBlanc’s insightful summary chapter analyzes the relationship between the McAnally and Thompson sites in the context of the Mimbres Valley, emphasizing temporal changes in subsistence, demography, and social organization. An appendix provides a comprehensive summary of tree-ring dates from Upland Mogollon pithouse villages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
this book helped me learn just about all i could ever want to know about my own people, everything from feasts and dress to war and welcoming visitors, the only thing else that could have made this book better were more pictures, although the pictures it does include are inciteful and useful, i dont regret for a second buying this book, and i plan to use it's table of contents as a guideline for books i'll buy in the future

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative but Dry

Product Description
In this 1958 book all the evidence bearing on Mycenean influence in Italy was gathered together for the first time. This evidence consists almost entirely of Mycenean pottery found in south Italy, Sicily, and the Aeolian Islands. Earlier studies on the subject are reviewed in the light of this research and in relationship to Furumark's analysis and classification of Mycenean pottery, but the most important part of the book is devoted to Mycenean finds from the excavations at Lipari and Torre Catelluccia, and to the large amount of pottery, for the greater part unpublished, from Taranto. The book is based on first-hand study by the author on the sites and is supplemented by more than 350 illustrations of pottery fragments and complete vases, very few of which have been previously published, and maps of the central Mediterranean and Sicily. Mycenean connexions with north Italy are also discussed, and the question of possible penetration to other areas in the western Mediterranean is briefly considered. ... Read more

It seemed desirable that before the modern materials of the Iroquois history could be well employed, we should accumulate something tangible and certain of their general polity, wars, and actual statistics, and also something of the ancient period of their earlier traditions, and lore, which might help the inquirer to clear up the boundaries of historical mystery which shroud the Indian period prior to 1492. ... Product Description

From 1935 to 1939, the Peabody Museum sponsored an archaeological expedition at the ancient Pueblo and early Spanish colonial site of Awatovi on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. The multidisciplinary project attracted professional and avocational scholars from a wide range of disciplines. Former lawyer Watson Smith was, at the time, an enthusiastic amateur archaeologist. He joined the expedition as a volunteer during the 1936 season and became one of its most productive researchers, as well as one of the Southwest's foremost archaeological scholars.

In this classic volume of the Peabody Museum Papers series, first published in 1952, Smith reported on the remarkable painted murals found at Awatovi and other Puebloan sites in the underground ceremonial chambers known as kivas. Now reissued in a stunning facsimile edition, the volume includes color reproductions of the original serigraphs by Louie Ewing. Smith's groundbreaking work first brought to public and scholarly attention the sacred wall-painting tradition of the aboriginal American Southwest. The aesthetic power and symbolic imagery of this artistic tradition still fascinates today. Archaeologists, art historians, collectors, and artists alike will welcome the return of this long out-of-print classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adds depth to the artist's career
Fans of Ukiyo-e already love the vivid colors, gentle gradations, and non-Western tradition of Japanese woodcut prints. If you've fallen in love with these images, maybe you want to take your relationship to a deeper level. Forrer presents one way to deepen your appreciation of the art.

Kuniyoshi's career, from about 1814 to his death in 1861, created a huge volume work, from minor humorous pieces, to simpler works with amusing images, to exciting shunga. Only a half-dozen finished prints appear here. Instead, this presents sketches that Kunyoshi used to work out his ideas before committing them to the rigors of woodcut. Some sketches capture isolated figures or poses, others display a visual concept close to its final printable form, and yet others lie at every point on the continuum between fragmentary concept and finished work. Some of the more interesting show different states of a single idea, as in the early sketch of plate 27 and the finished print of plate 28, shown opposite 27 in the black and white section, and again among the color plates. Other examples (e.g., plates 109 and 110) show a much looser connection of concept and completion, at least as interesting to students of the creative process.

I had hoped to see sketches of Kunyoshi's shunga (erotic images) represented, but their omission is my only disappointment in this book. Perhaps no shunga sketches remain, something that seems unlikely given how productive Kuniyoshi was in the genre and how many sketches of his other work survive. Perhaps the extant sketches are closely held by collectors and unavailable to scholars, perhaps issues of delicacy forbade their inclusion. Whatever the reason, it's a mark against this collection, but only a small one.

This won't do much for the eye captivated by the color and finished elegance of Japanese woodcuts, and makes no attempt to represent any artist but Kuniyoshi. For some of us, though, the focus on one artist and the hundred-plus samples of thought process comprise an incredible resource for study and enjoyment.
