Product Description
Finite element analysis (FEA) has become the dominant tool of analysis in many industrial fields of engineering, particularly in mechanical and aerospace engineering. This process requires significant computational work divided into several distinct phases. What Every Engineer Should Know About Computational Techniques of Finite Element Analysis offers a concise, self-contained treatment of FEA and all of the tools needed for efficient use and practical implementation.

This book provides you with a walk-through of the process from the physical model to the computed solution. Based on the author's thirty years of practical experience in finite element analysis in the shipbuilding, aerospace, and automobile industries, it describes the transformation of the physical problem into a mathematical model, reduction of the model to a more efficient, numerically solvable form, and the solution of the problem using specific computational techniques. The author discusses time and frequency domain solutions as used in practice, as well as the representation of the computed results.

What Every Engineer Should Know About Computational Techniques of Finite Element Analysis serves as a to-the-point guide to using or implementing FEA for both beginners and everyday users who must apply the finite element method to your daily work. The techniques can be easily executed in most available FEA software packages. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars May not be what you're expecting.
With a title that begins "what every engineer should know", you might expect this to be accessible to every engineer.However, if you're new to finite element analysis, you'll probably have serious trouble following the book.

This is an advanced math text, a series of mathematical algorithms for laying out and solving problems.It's about using finite element analysis more effectively and efficiently, not about learning to use it in the first place.Unless you already understand the topic - what finite element analysis does, how to use it, what sort of problems it can and can't solve - you probably won't get much out of this book.

The book may well be useful and readable for people who have prior experience with finite element analysis.I just can't tell.(If I could review it without giving it a rating, I would.)Just be aware that this is not a book for beginners. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides a relatively simple, but complete, approach to finite element (FE) theoryand applications. It is written specifically forengineers and scientists who want to understand the fundamental theory of FE analysis and to learnhow to analyze practical problems using FEsoftware. The prerequisite knowledge required for the readers is a basic understanding of engineering mechanics and mathematics covered inengineering undergraduate courses. No prior knowledge of FE theory or FE software packages is assumed. Because of the complexity of finite elementanalysis, this book is particularly useful for young engineers, who would benefit from apractical, introductory guide on the topic. It isalso suitable as a refresher and handy reference for more senior engineers. Includes a four-pagesection of full-color diagrams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to a topic that can be difficult.
I am a engineer that didn't spend a great deal of time on Finite Elements as an undergrad or a grad student. So I've tried to educate myself since that time on this topic. This book really helped facilitate that. It's really not a text for someone who hopes to write their own code (i.e. a real step by step type book, like D. Logan's book on this topic); it's more of a book that tries to introduce the reader to the overall concepts of Finite Elements.

The Chapters of this book are:

Chapter 1: Introduction and background.

The theoretical background and a discussion of the matrix notation in the book. Refresher information of stress-strain relationships are discussed, and the main points (and differences) of the FE [Finite Element] method and the FDM [Finite Difference Method] are discussed.

Chapter 2: Structural Analysis Using Pin-Jointed Elements.

Derivation of simple structures using FE formulation. Includes an example showing how matrices are assembled.

Chapter 3: Continuum Elements.

Building on previous procedures, the book then derives a generic expression for the element stiffness [using the total potential energy theorem] for a variety of elements. And the steps required for the assembly of the global stiffness matrix and finding required solutions.

Chapter 4: Energy and variation approaches.

Presents the details of the various theorems used to derive FE formulations (including the Galerkian method; which is widely used).

Chapter 5: Higher Order Quadratic Elements

Higher order elements [including Isoparametric elements with higher order shape functions] are introduced. Discussions include accuracy and numerical methods to evaluate integrals of the higher order shape functions (i.e. Gaussian quadrature).

Chapter 6: Beam, Plate, and Shell elements.

Presents the formulation of these elements and the degrees of freedom associated with each one.

Chapter 7: Practical Guidelines for FE analysis.

The practical aspects of modeling and getting good FE results. (Not considering the mathematical aspects of the formulation.) Discussions include good element shapes, meshing, convergence, the Patch Test, etc.

Chapter 8: Introduction to Nonlinear FE analysis.

A discussion of the difference between nonlinear and linear FE problems. The different types of nonlinearity are discussed as well as some solution techniques (i.e. Newton-Raphson, etc.).

Chapter 9: Thermal Problems

A discussion of techniques for FE analysis of thermal problems.

Chapter 10: Examples of FE applications

Several practical examples are presented (with complete solutions using a computer). Among the examples presented are a perforated plate, pressurized cylinder, etc.. Element selection, the effects of meshing on results, use of symmetry to reduce problem size, etc., are discussed.

I thought the Glossary was outstanding (at the end of the book). If you are new to the technique, some terms may throw you for a loop (i.e. shape function, isoparametric elements, etc.).

Overall: 2 thumbs up.

Product Description

Despite the continued rapid advance in computing speed and memory the increase in the complexity of models used by engineers persists in outpacing them. Even where there is access to the latest hardware, simulations are often extremely computationally intensive and time-consuming when full-blown models are under consideration.

The need to reduce the computational cost involved when dealing with high-order/many-degree-of-freedom models can be offset by adroit computation. In this light, model-reduction methods have become a major goal of simulation and modeling research. Model reduction can also ameliorate problems in the correlation of widely used finite-element analyses and test analysis models produced by excessive system complexity.

Model Order Reduction Techniques explains and compares such methods focusing mainly on recent work in dynamic condensation techniques:

- Compares the effectiveness of static, exact, dynamic, SEREP and iterative-dynamic condensation techniques in producing valid reduced-order models;

- Shows how frequency shifting and the number of degrees of freedom affect the desirability and accuracy of using dynamic condensation;

- Answers the challenges involved in dealing with undamped and non-classically damped models;

- Requires little more than first-engineering-degree mathematics and highlights important points with instructive examples.

Academics working in research on structural dynamics, MEMS, vibration, finite elements and other computational methods in mechanical, aerospace and structural engineering will find Model Order Reduction Techniques of great interest while it is also an excellent resource for researchers working on commercial finite-element-related software such as ANSYS and Nastran.

Product Description
The use of Finite Elements for the modelling of heat transfer problems is here described for the first time. Applicable in Mechanical, Civil as well as in Materials engineering, it copes with heat transfer in virtually any medium including polymers and ceramics. The essential theory is covered and full implementational details given including two FORTRAN programs. HEAT2D, a program capable of steady and transient, linear and nonlinear analyses of diffusive and convective heat transfer and its adaptive version HADAPT are also presented with full instructions and documented examples. The complete source code for both programs and sample input data files are provided on a floppy disc included with the book. The programs can be run on any computer with a FORTRAN 77 compiler. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is badly written
I really has a bad experience with books written by the author H-C Huang. The other one, Plate & Shell, is also the same thing. I suspect what he did are just taking the source code from their research group, modify it and to make money out of it. All the codes in those books are "goto" code --- code filled with goto statement. I sincerely advice those who which to buy this book give it a second thought. The technique outlined in this book is out of date, and is really fundamental stuff. It lacks insight, motivation and does not show any realistic application of the FEM for heat transfer problem. ...
