Explore a Unified Treatment of the Finite Element Method

The finite element method has matured to the point that it can accurately and reliably be used, by a careful analyst, for an amazingly wide range of applications. With expanded coverage and an increase in fully solved examples, the second edition of Finite Element Analysis: Thermomechanics of Solids presents a unified treatment of the finite element method in theremomechanics, from the basics to advanced concepts.

An Integrated Presentation of Critical Technology

As in the first edition, the author presents and explicates topics in a way that demonstrates the highly unified structure of the finite element method. The presentation integrates continuum mechanics and relevant mathematics with persistent reliance on variational and incremental-variational foundations. The author exploits matrix-vector formalisms and Kronecker product algebra to provide transparent and consistent notation throughout the text.

Nearly twice as long as the first edition, this second edition features:

§         Greater integration and balance between introductory and advanced material

§         Increased number of fully solved examples

§         Selected developments in numerical methods, detailing accelerating computations in eigenstructure extraction, time integration, and stiffness matrix triangularization

§         More extensive coverage of the arc length method for nonlinear problems

§         Expanded and enhanced treatment of rotating bodies and buckling

Provides Sophisticated Understanding of Capabilities and Limitations

This new edition of a popular text includes significant illustrative examples and applications, modeling strategies, and explores a range of computational issues. 5-0 out of 5 stars The only book on the subject
There are lots of books on finite element analysis. There are a good number of books on finitie element analysis for the electrical engineer. This is the only book devoted solely to the FE method for the analysis of electric machines, so it is kind of hard to say that this is the best because it is the only horse in the race. But I can confidently assert this because it answers most of the questions dealing with the area.Prof.Salon has done a very good job of putting a lot of results in a very slim volume.he has sought to answer most of the question concerning analyzing different machines and he has devoted just enough mathematics to clear up a number of important issues concerning the accuracy of the methods. Most specifically, he dealt with the air gap mesh problem very clearly and succinctly.

He also tells you how to go about calculating the inductance, the flux linkage, and the magnetic flux density from the vector potential. This is a very complete treatment of a very broad subject.

Do I think he could have done more with specific machines?Yes.I wish there were more on permanent magnet machines, I wish there were more on how to calculate iron losses, but these are subjects that are still being researched.maybe he can update the book in a few years and catch all of these topics. For now, the book is pretty darned good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
If you're a numerical analyst or an engineer interested in the basic theory of the finite element method, this book belongs on your shelf. If you have no interest in finite elements but enjoy well-written mathematical literature, this book still belongs on your shelf.Though some sections are dated, the contents of this book remain a solid foundation for understanding the behavior of finite element techniques in theory and in practice.Furthermore, while the contents are mathematically rigorous, the authors largely avoid the theorem/lemma/proof of most mathematical books, and instead describe the analysis in an almost conversational tone.Reading Strang and Fix reminds me of reading Lanczos: the book is dense with ideas which are both mathematically and practically interesting, but the presentation is so smooth that one can almost read it as one reads a novel. ... Shell structures are found abundantly in engineering designs and are routinely analysed with finite element methods. The objective of this book is to present, in a unified manner, modern finite element procedures for general shell analysis. The first chapters introduce the basic concepts for the analysis of shells, explain the mathematical preliminaries, and discuss the mathematical models of plates and shells including their asymptotic properties. The following chapters deal with finite element discretization methods for plates and shells. At the end of the book, applications of these methods in modern engineering practice are described and an overview of nonlinear shell analysis is given. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking treatise
It is an understatement to call this book excellent! Development of robust and reliable computational techniques for shell analysis continues to be a most challenging task. The level of profundity offered by this book on this traditional topic is truly astounding. Mathematical analysis has been wonderfully intertwined with engineering judgement. The presentation is brief and compact with an emphasis on mathematical rigor.

5-0 out of 5 stars finite element analysis of shells in depth
This is the first (and only) book I have come across which gives a deep and comprehensive analysis of finite element methods for shell structures. The authors take a mathematical approach to the problem, and do a very nice job.Traditionally, finite element procedures for shells have been formulated intuitively hence resulting in mixed success.Mathematical analyses of finite element formulations give a deeper and meaningful insight into the underlying mathematical theory and the reasons why some formulations perform much better than others. This deeper mathematical understanding in turn gives better insight into the physical behaviour of shells as limiting cases are approached (i.e thin shells etc.).Research in finite element analysis, including shells, is very much alive and still has a lot of potential. This book is very valuable for people who want to dig further into mathematical aspects of finite element formulations, and are not just content with "coding" an existing formulation. This is not a "recipe" book, but a book which teaches you how to come up with new, mathematically consistent and meaningful formulations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless for most people
The book is probably good for researchers. It is however not suitable for beginners or practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important reference for shell structure mechanics
This book clearly explains shell structure mechanics from a mathematical and practical perspective. As a practicing engineer and finite element user, I found it extremely useful and easy to understand. This is also an invaluable reference for graduate students in applied mechanics. I think it will be a classic reference in that field.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Shells

Product Description
Practical Stress Analysis with Finite Elements is an ideal introductory text for newcomers to finite element analysis who wish to learn how to use FEA. Unlike many other books which claim to be at an introductory level, this book does not weigh the reader down with theory but rather provides the minimum amount of theory needed to understand how to practically perform an analysis using a finite element analysis software package. Newcomers to FEA generally want to learn how to apply FEA to their particular problem and consequently the emphasis of this book is on practical FE procedures. The information in this book is an invaluable guide and reference for both undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students and for practising engineers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
This is a very good book for whoever is starting on FEM, just as described. It's not too theoretical at all

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory material on computer-aided stress analysis
This is an excellent introductory material on grasping the basic principles and procedures for setting up stress analysis problems for computer-aided analysis. I particularly like the coverage of material properties, i.e, the material types, constitutive relationships, and the significance of proper selection of material type(s) for realistic simulation of structural behavior in service.

It is suggested that the a future edition should include more practical examples of contact problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book contains fundamental errors.
Do not buy this book. Not only is it poorly written with many grammatical errors, it is full of fundamental mistakes. When the book refers to kilograms as a measurement of WEIGHT (instead of mass) and the tensile strength of a material as the maximum LOAD (instead of stress) that can be carried, it leaves me questioning everything else that appears in the book.If not even basic concepts can be conveyed correctly, I have no faith that the more complicated data that appears is correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book
This book provides a good theoretical base for understanding the finite element method.I would suggest it for a class, but not so much for teaching yourself.

This version seems to be a low budget print, but I really like the way the pages are printed. The paper is more like copy paper and it doesn't cause glare or eye strain.

4-0 out of 5 stars As advertised
This book is an excellent first reference for beginners. It provides a great overview of the fundamentals of FEA and the practical aspects of setting up an analysis. It will guide you in setting up the model and running the analysis, but you will need to go elsewhere for information on interpreting the results. ... Read more

Product Description
Young engineers are often required to utilize commercial finite element software without having had a course on finite element theory. That can lead to computer-aided design errors.

This book outlines the basic theory, with a minimum of mathematics, and how its phases are structured within a typical software. The importance of estimating a solution, or verifying the results, by other means is emphasized and illustrated. The book also demonstrates the common processes for utilizing the typical graphical icon interfaces in commercial codes. In particular, the book uses and covers the widely utilized SolidWorks solid modeling and simulation system to demonstrate applications in heat transfer, stress analysis, vibrations, buckling, and other fields. The book, with its detailed applications, will appeal to upper-level undergraduates as well as engineers new to industry. ... Read more
