Book Description

Since publication of the first edition of Volume II in 1995, several developments in fungal molecular biology - such as fungal genome projects - have progressed tremendously. This in turn has affected fundamental genetics as well as biotechnology. To accommodate these developments, the second edition has been completely updated and all chapters have been revised. In addition, the volume contains five new chapters dealing with different aspects of fungal molecular genetics.

Topics include: Nuclear and extranuclear genetics; functional genomics; biotechnical genetics; yeasts and filamentous fungi.

Book Description
Fungi belonging to the genera Trichoderma and Gliocladium are soil-borne saprophytes which have been used for industrial and agricultural applications for decades. Some strains produce enzymes and antibiotics while others are useful as biological agents for the protections of plants against pathogens. This first volume of two, gives a detailed account of the morphology and taxonomy of Trichoderma and Gliocladium, before discussing their ecology and basic biology. Molecular biological aspects examined include their genome and gene structure, genetic transformation and asexual genetics. A chapter on safety aspects is also included. ... Read more

Book Description
Recognizing and discriminating between fungal populations and the genetical processes that accompany them, including speciation is now a rapidly developing field that is heavily dependent upon the use of molecular markers. There was no basic text on this subject, John Burnett has provided such an account. The text describes the methodologies employed and, for the benefit of those without a background in mycology, a brief introduction to basic fungal biology. Recent findings relating to processes in fungal populations - mutation, migration, recombination, heterokaryosis, hybridization, polyploidy, and the operation of selective forces are combined with traditional fungal biology. Finally the taxonomic problems raised by fungal species are discussed, together with the processes of speciation. ... Read more

Book Description

Through the integration of bioinformatic, genetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, phenomic and other massive datasets, genomics is revealing exciting new insights into fungal cell biology. The central theme of this volume is the strong impact that genomics is having upon our understanding of fungal biology, across a wide range of species, including model yeasts (such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe), filamentous fungi (such as Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus nidulans) and pathogenic fungi (such as Magnaporthe grisae, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum).World-renowned scientists address the following topics in these fungi: systems biology and evolution, circadian rhythms, apoptosis and stress responses, secretion, and environmental signalling networks. Particular emphasis is placed on fungal pathogenicity. Various genomic technologies are discussed, including genome-wide sequence comparisons, transcript profiling, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics.

Description:
Pitch canker, caused by Gibberella circinata Nirenberg & O'Donnell, is a problem for pines in both native and planted stands. The aerial phase of the disease results in shoot and canopy dieback, whereas soil or seedborne inoculum can cause damping off of emerging seedlings. Based on the extent of lesion development on inoculated shoots, families of Pinus radiata have been shown to differ significantly in resistance to pitch canker. This study was undertaken to determine if these same families also differ in mortality caused by G. circinata at the seedling emergence stage. For this purpose, seeds treated with a suspension of G. circinata spores were planted in a greenhouse and rated for pitch canker induced mortality. Variation between families, in mortality of emerging seedlings, was significant but the observed variation was not significantly correlated with measures of resistance based on stem inoculation tests. This suggests that mechanisms limiting the development of stem lesions do not confer measurable resistance to the seedling phase of the disease and therefore that early exposure to the pathogen may compromise selection for resistance to pitch canker in stands of Pinus radiata. ... Book Description
Fungal Morphogenesis brings together in one book, for the first time, the full scope of fungal developmental biology. The book provides a coherent account of the subject and puts forward ideas that can provide a basis for future research. Throughout, the author blends together physiological, biochemical, structural and molecular descriptions within an evolutionary framework. Sufficient information is provided about fungal biology to give the reader a rounded view of the mycological context within which fungal morphogenesis is played out, without obscuring the broader biological significance. The author is careful to avoid jargon and demystifies technical terms. Written by one of the few people with the necessary breadth of research expertise to deal authoritatively with the wide range of topics presented, this book will appeal to developmental and cell biologists, microbiologists, and geneticists.Download Description

Editorial Review

Book Description
Biology of the Fungal Cell offers a select sampling of current knowledge and direction of fundamental research into the cellular structure, morphogenesis and development of fungi. Topics range from the mechanisms of invasive growth and controls of polarity, to the nature of extracellular matrices and the various connections through the cell wall to the cytoskeleton and beyond. The fungal cell is considered in the context of colony formation, as well as from a molecular point of view - from signal transduction to the vast tubular matrix that comprises the vacuole system - with an over-riding emphasis on biology. The volume concludes with a forward-looking consideration of genomics as perhaps the most powerful tool available for studies of the fungal cell. Each chapter, some lavishly illustrated, authored by highly respected scientists in the field, offers an in-depth review of the subject that is key to a basic understanding on how these organisms develop as cells, colonies and pathogens. ... Book Description
In all eukaryotic cells, each fundamental process cycle progression andits control, protein secretion and targeting, transcription and itsregulation, mRNA processing, and DNA replication accomplished byessentially identical cellular machinery composed of essentially identical protein components. This conservation of function has catapulted theyeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe fromparochial backwaters to the forefront of experimental molecular biology:What is true for a yeast is true for an elephant, and in experiments youcan get the answer a lot faster from a yeast. This burgeoning appreciation of yeasts as model systems for the study of fundamental cellular processes has highlighted the need for an update of the seminal 1981 monograph TheMolecular Biology of the Yeast Saccharomyces. This need is now met by thepublication of a three-volume series to serve as the authoritative sequel. The first volume focuses on the genome organization of the yeastSaccharomyces as well as protein translation and its regulation and energy metabolism. Subsequent volumes emphasize such topics as the cell cycle, secretion, and transcription. Together, these volumes provide acomprehensive survey of the molecular and cellular biology ofSaccharomyces and Schizosaccharomyces, serving not only as a currentsummary of every significant area of investigation, but also as a thorough reference source. These volumes are required reading for everyone in thefield and anyone curious about the state of the art of molecular andcellular biology. ... Read more
