Lots of cooks in the soup
Boy, this book seems to be selling for a lot of money.What's up with that?Good thing I bought it ten years ago.Tedious economics comments out of the way, this is one of the more sought after Missing Adventures, both for what it is and what it does.Just the very concept on paper makes it rare . . . this is the only pairing of any two Doctors in the Virgin novels.Even better, it starts to delve into insights into the Doctor's past and the past of Gallifrey, bits that were picked up and expanded on in other books, but the foundation was laid here first.The plot starts out simple enough, the fifth Doctor is drawn to another planet and locked out of his TARDIS, a few days after his recent regeneration.Nyssa, Tegan and Adric are with him and soon enough they are embroiled in what appears to be a war between the scientific ruling class and a bunch of rebels.Plus, ghosts are appearing left and right and nobody knows why.To make matters worse, someone appears to be helping the rebels, someone who knows the Doctor quite well.The combining of the fifth and seventh's Doctors respective teams (the seventh brings along Chris and Roz) should have been a mess but Parkin manages to balance the huge cast and not have it all dissolve into a indistinguishable haul.He pulls this off by pairing off the two teams with each other and giving them separate plots, while sort of shoving the seventh Doctor off to the side.Which works, because any scenes the little Doctor is in he more or less takes over, his manipulations, utter confidence and experience bowling over everyone else, including his younger, more innocent self, who just can't keep up with all the machinations.This is an interesting novel in the sense that we have never seen two Doctors essentially opposed, even though their stated goals are the same, and through the eyes of the fifth, we see why all the other incarnations fear the seventh, who comes off as one mean son of a gun, in his full glory as chessmaster.Otherwise the two casts mingle well and there are a lot of nice moments between them.The seventh Doctor and his team's reaction to Adric is both poignant and priceless.The other selling point of the story is the glimpses into Gallifreyan history, as the Time Lady Patience causes all of this by having her prototype TARDIS crash into the planet.The peeks into her thoughts are intriguing, both for a window into a piece of the mythology we've never seen and hints as to where the Doctor came from.Oh yes, and did I mention the Feretu, a race of Time Lord magicians that are killing everyone in sight?It's almost too much story for one novel and it's no surprise that some plots (like the rebel one) sort of fall by the wayside as the book focuses more on the Doctors and the Feretu and making sure the Universe isn't destroyed.As I said earlier, Parkin juggles all of this admirably and I think in the end its reach exceeds its grasp by just thatmuch, the sheer naked ambition involved makes the book fun to read and when it does payoff, it does so in spades.A key book in the novel continuity and fascinating in its own right (I have no idea if it's considered canon or not, I doubt it), snatch it up if you can find it for less than three digits.Otherwise, hope the BBC prints it online.

Cold fudge sundae
Here's a book with everything in it.You got your multiple doctors, check.Montage of scenes from "The Mind of Evil", "The Brain of Morbius", and "The Creature From the Pit" (!), check.Obscure continuity references, check: members of an alien race referred to in passing in "Time-Flight", and lyrics from a song once recorded by Jon Pertwee.

So.What's "Cold Fusion" about?

Buried deep in an interview on the BBC Doctor Who Books website, Lance Parkin reveals that the germ of "Cold Fusion" was the war in Yugoslavia.At its heart this was a book about the Fifth Doctor ("Bland") fighting in a local war... and opposed by the Seventh Doctor (the "Dark" one) masterminding the other side.Great idea!However, it doesn't really play out here."Cold Fusion" is consumed by flashbacks, by references to past and future Gallifreyan history, and by any number of "Oh!Look how clever" moments.The novel is consequently much darker than the dark comedy left on the drawing board.

"Cold Fusion" had me scratching my head.The book is seven years old, and subsequent developments in the book lines rendered its revelations moot.I searched the Internet in search for other commentary about just what it all means, but apart from the brief interview with Lance, couldn't find any.

This is the plot, all spoilers: The Fifth Doctor, before the death of Adric, lands on a 30th century Earth colony, where the scientific ruling elite is threatened by terrorists, and undermined by the descendants of UNIT.Lost beneath the snow is a TARDIS from ancient Gallifrey.The pilot -- Patience -- is still alive, and regenerates.We learn she's the wife of the Other -- one of the creators of Gallifrey who vanished into history to enter the Doctor's own timeline.Meanwhile, the journey of Patience's TARDIS unleashes the Ferutu -- Time Lords from the end of an alternate Universe.In order to save the web of time, the Doctor must send the proto-TARDIS home to ancient Gallifrey.However, the Seventh Doctor, shortly before the death of Roz, outwits his earlier self, and uses the proto-TARDIS instead to destroy the Ferutu and their universe.Most of the colony is wrecked, and Patience is killed by UNIT.Roz knocks the Fifth Doctor unconscious so the Seventh Doctor can make his getaway.

Deep, deep stuff.Any one of the three stories here is interesting, but not all together.The colony story sort of just fades away, both sides thugs, Lance's pointed political asides disappearing into the ether.I came away with a loathing for the Seventh Doctor... who really wasn't about the things he did in this novel.The Ferutu remain inscrutable, not tragic.

The black, black comedy intrudes.There are two very funny moments of 30th century hijinks: the Doctor disarms a "war-droid", which rattles out a string of hilarious operating instructions.Later, we learn that robot labor speaks in working-class accents and govern themselves with dilatory union tactics.Both these moments are laugh-out-loud funny.They're also followed by brutal deaths just paragraphs later.Maybe that sums up "Cold Fusion" in a nutshell.It's got these great ideas, but just doesn't know where to put 'em.

"Cold Fusion" is sad, sad, sad.There's a lot of death -- maybe the highest body-count ever in "Doctor Who", apart from what was implied in "Logopolis".But the end of the Universe in "Logopolis" was balanced by themes of rebirth."Cold Fusion" is ambitious, and weighs on the mind when it's all over.However, as dark as it is, what does it all mean?What's it all for?

Five against Seven in a game of Patience
Here's a hint for Doctor Who readers: if the author is Lance Parkin, the book is one you should purchase immediately!

This novel is, at the very least, ambitious.Featuring the Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan as well as the Seventh Doctor, Roz and Chris, it also shines an unclear spotlight on the origins of Gallifreyan time travel, and introduces a character called 'The Patient'.

What is perhaps best in this novel is the conflict between the Doctors.The Seventh is known for his manipulative nature, and so the open and honest Fifth finds himself trying to oppose his later self.That both Doctors are portrayed in a sympathetic manner is a tribute to Mr. Parkin's writing skills and familiarity with all aspects of the history of Doctor Who (as you may expect from the author of 'A History of the Universe').

Also worth noting: the Patient, or Patience as she is also known, is also featured in 'The Infinity Doctors', also by Lance Parkin, which expands further on this very interesting addition to the Doctor Who universe.

Excellent and moving
This is a really interesting and memorable book.It includes practically everything you could possibly find in a "Doctor Who" book, with continuity references worked in as smoothly and intricately as one would expect from the author of "A History of the Universe"; there are specific references to televition stories ranging in time from "100,000 BC" to the 1996 TV-movie.The book also gives many hints about the Docotr's distant past and the whole Loom/Other concept; indeed, although I have not read "Lungbarrow," it appears to me that reading between the lines of this book may allow the reader to move a long way toward figuring out the nature of Susan's relationship to the Doctor.I was surprised by the fact that in its last few chapters the book, which up till then had largely been an enjoyable adventure, turned extremely depressing, with many more people dying than was really necessary; then again, this concluding segment of the book was also emotionally powerful, with the Fifth Doctor undergiong a pair of experiences that might have broken the spirit of a less strong individual.The book also hits at the eventual fate of one of the Seventh Doctor's companions in various ways throughout, and presents us with excellent characterizations of the Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.Highly recommended.

Asian Fusion
I am a big fan of Asian cuisine.The flavors are so unique, as are many of the vegetables and pastas that are included in the dishes.Traditional Asian meals do not normally contain a lot of dairy so that ingredient is not particularly missed in these vegan recipes.Meat, too, can be take it or leave it in many Asian dishes and I did not miss it's presence in this cookbook.If you are trying to include more vegan dishes in your diet, eating Asian foods is one way to do that without even noticing it!

If you have never cooked Asian foods at home, this book will be a very handy reference guide.The first 20 pages is nothing but the ingredients and their definitions!This is a very helpful section when you are trying to shop for ingredients...should you look for Chana dal with the vegetables or the spices?(it is a pea, usually sold dried by the way!)

The recipes are divided by region, which makes it a little hard to flip throughto find a recipe but the index in the back simplifies it since you can look up 'eggplant' and find all appropriate dishes. Each recipe is given an English name as well as it's traditional name and there are a few sentences about each one describing its' history, taste, technique, etc.I was a little intimidated by the number of ingredients in some of the recipes but this is not unusual for Asian cuisine.So many flavors, spices, vegetables, etc are added to some dishes to achieve just the right flavor. The recipes aren't necessarily complicated or time consuming but these are not 5 ingredient dishes.The author does a wonderful job of describing the preparation steps of each recipe so even if you are a novice in the kitchen, you will not have too much trouble with the preparation of these dishes.I think this book includes a wonderful selection of recipes from a number of different regions of Asia.

buyer beware
I bought this book after purchasing the author's other cookbook, Cooking at the Natural Cafe in Santa Fe, without knowing that the books are 99% the same. Same number of pages, same recipe titles (I didn't check to see if any ingredients were changed as too time consuming). This edition actually has dropped some of the drawings. Only the bibliography is longer by half a page. If you already have the previous cookbook, you don't need this one. Shame on the publisher for repackaging a previous book under a new title and not saying so where it can be noticed.

Explorations in Fusion of East and Southwest
Walters is to commended for this work, which expresses her evolution in cooking and encouragement for the rest of us to do the same.To this end, she provides helpful hints and recipes to begin.

There are some eighty-five recipes here, primarily exhibiting this east meets southwest theme, e.g. East Indian Potato Pancakes with Cucumber Raita; Tempeh Curry with Potatio Chapatis; Red Chile Lemon Chicken; Fresh Mango Mousse.

Alive with culture and history (and tasty dishes)
What makes this cookbook, (as well as others by Harris) a delightful read and a solid source of information on Pacific Rim cuisine is the amount of history and the wonderful anecdotes that accompany the recipes. For those of us who are not lucky enough to have lived in or traveled to the many places that comprise the Atlantic Rim, her book is much-needed.

I only ever heard of the soursop fruit, or the wonderful beverage mauby when I finally traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands a few years ago, so was eager to learn more. And although there are many familiar foods, such as black-eyed peas, and okra, to an amateur cook like me, the Atlantic Rim variations gave me more reasons to like these favorites from childhood. I especially loved to see cane syrup; it reminded me so of my father, who grew up in Alabama and processed cane at the mill as a child. He couldn't get enough of the syrup or the juice.It also reminded me of the purpose of the book: To show, through cuisine, the marvelous connection between the cultures of Africa, the Caribbean, Central & South Americas, and the United States

high hopes disappointed
oddly soulless versions of the classic recipes of the caribbean and ports of call south; the average criolla cook from bahia to calle ocho has zestier methods of cooking, say, plain black beans -- put the bay leaf in with the beans first, not last, add a small splash of cooked vinegar at the end, serve sprinkled with minced cilantro, lime wedges, avocado slices, and so on.
from a chef like this one, with restaurant credentials, i would expect first, the classic recipe amped with restaurant kitchen techniques, short cuts and cooking techniques, for example paul prudhomme's cook-everything-on-a-high-flame-stirring angle; second, well-chosen new or fusion flavor touches, garniture, accompaniments, serving suggestions, as per steven raichlen (miami spice).
from a chef with these academic credentials, i did enjoy some of the work she did, for example, on the sources of pepperpot soup. i wish she had done more of that, given the enduring flavors of africa under the harshest conditions of slavery -- mixed with french, spanish, native american and other influences. that book, defining creole, remains to be written.
there's also an unpleasant undertone of self-congratulation for having "discovered" recipes that are neither original or All That, for example, molasses-flavored chantilly cream.
for an expensively published book, nice paper, two color pages, this one has too many typos and unrealistic cooking times.

Interesting introductory text. A less qualitative (more in depth) approach on some chapters would have helped a lot.

Great Introductory Fusion Book
This is a great Introductory fusion book for anyone that is just starting out in this field of plasma physics.It explains all of he fundimentals very well.

Good introductory text.
I was looking for an introductory text that was current and that would cover the most popular approaches. I didn't want something directed at the popular level (little or no math), but I also didn't want a text that would go into agonizing analysis of every plasma instability under the sun. There are many fine books on plasma physics (e.g F. F. Chen's "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion"); that is not what I was looking for and that is not the emphasis of this text.

This covers the basic physics and explains the basic concepts behind several of the more popular fusion approaches. The reader should have college level physics and calculus to get the most out of this book. I found it useful but not comprehensive (you can only fit so much in under 300 pages). So if you want to know the fusion cross-section of, say, p + B reactions, you'll need to locate other information sources. But you will find reaction cross-section tabulations on d + t, d + d, etc. reactions as a function of energy. ... Read more

Helpful
Book is very helpful in learning how to blend styles. Though for someone just beginning who does not know the two basic styles already I would suggest another book. Though if you already know American Comic styles and Manga this book is awesome.

Great book, very helpful
I used to own this book when I lived in Connecticut and every time I drew, I would go back to it for reference. It would go through the differences between manga, fusion, and american style comic art. Unfortunately, I lost it during a move, but I would definately buy it again. Great drawing reference for both beginning and intermediate artists!

Good for reference.....not much else
In my opinion, any instructional book should show you how to complete a process from steps 1, 2, 3, 4, and then 5 (depending on how long the process is, of course). However, this book (like most of the Hart books I own) teaches, or rather shows, steps 1, 3, and then 5 with little explination in between. Most "lessons" follow this simple process: A very bare beginning, a nearly complete picture with little explination as to why things were added or changed, and finally a completed masterpiece.

The book's strong point(s) would have to be the fact that when structured lessons aren't being taught, the completed pictures work very well for points of reference. Everything from casual clothes to futuristic armor is shown, and can be built upon to create other designs. The book also covers points concerning comic page layouts and panels. These too are surprisingly well done; teaching character focus and different panel designs.

There are other area's covered, but I won't give away the entire thing here. It's probably better if you have a base for drawing, and not try to learn by starting with this book. On the other hand, if you're looking to expand on what you already know, or are looking for a reference book, this one may be worth a look.

A fun book for fans of both
For starters, this is written by Christopher Hart, so it's probably one of your best options if you are interested in the subject of the book...

This book is great for fans of both manga and graphic novels; it goes into how the two genres differ (fusion vs graphic novel) and also the different styles in the fusion style (cartoon vs comic). Also gives huge amounts of character concepts and ideas; a fantastic buy for those who like both styles (not recommended for those who are fans of one and hate the other)

dread locks
The setting of this place takes place on a saturday morning. The plot is first parker meets tara and then they tara starts to go to the same school as parker and parker introduces tara to all the kids she wants to meet. Then weird things start happening to the kids she wants to meet.The conflict is strange things start happening to the kids she wanted to meet. I think that it was a really great book, it keeps you wondering about what is going to happen next. So i think everyone should read it.

The Glorious Dread locks
I read the book Dreadlocks by Neal Shusterman. It's a book which combines old myths, classical fairytales, and legends. There's an ordinary kid named Parker and he lives in an ordinary town, until this new attractive girl arrives and stirs up things in the town, but there is something different about this girl. I liked this book because it kept me on the edge of my seat and it kept me guessing. It is funny also. The main characters are teenagers, so teens that read can relate to some of the stuff. I would recommend this book to people who like suspense thrillers. Overall I thought this book was great.

David's Book Review On Dread Locks
In this thrilling book, Dread Locks by Neal Shusterman, a girl moves into the neighbor hood where Parker Baer lives. The girl's name is Tara, and Tara is no ordinary girl. She has a very big secret. Tara makes many friends at school but the people that Tara befriend develop strange quirks including drinking gallons of milk, eating dirt, and becoming lethargic. Soon, something strange starts to happen to Parker.
My favorite part of Dread Locks was when Parker found out what Tara really was.
I recommend this book to people who like thrillers and a good page-turner.

Fairy Tale, Myth and Modern Life
Parker Baer wakes up one morning and discovers someone has been in his family's house.There are clues all over.Then he finds the invader asleep in his bed.She is Tara and is a new neighbor.Although beautiful there is something very strange about her and its not just that she always wears sunglasses.Parker, or Baby Baer as Tara calls him, becomes fascinated with Tara.She seems more open with other than with him.She goes on dates with other guys but not with him although she is friendly enough.

Then parker notices that guys she has been out with are starting to act very strange.Some of the other students are acting strange as well.Why is one student eating dirt?What is going one?Then it is learned that one of the students is sick with an almost unheard of ailment.Others start to show the same signs.Finally the problem spreads to Parker's home and his brother and sister.Parker knows something must be done at that Tara is at the heart of the problem.During their final confrontation we learn the truth behind Tara and what she is doing.

This is a fast and fun book.The opening scenes are right out of Goldilocks and the Three Bears but it is quickly tied into older myths and legends.The plot moves nicely with building dread and steady revelations.Although some of the secrets at the end will not come as a surprise, they way they are handled and resolved are fresh and new.This is the first in a new Dark Fusion series and bodes well for the quality of the rest of the series.Check it out.

In Neal Shusterman's new DARK FUSION Series, the author takes myths, legends, and fairy tales, mixes them up with modern-day tales of teen angst and horror, and comes up with an entertaining read.In DREAD LOCKS, we get a whole stew pot full of retold stories--GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS, MEDUSA, KING MIDAS.They're all there, and the finished product is a quick, fun, and sometimes depressing read.

Parker Baer is the type of fifteen-year old I both love and hate.He's always been given everything he's ever wanted, due to the fact that his parents are wealthy.He has an obnoxious older brother, Garrett, and an irritable little sister, Katrina.For his birthday, his brother bought him a motocross bike, and his parents gave him a statue.Yes, the teenaged Parker is now memorialized in bronze.

Eye Opening Book!
Forta's book is very interesting.I almost bought a book solely on SQL, but just bought this book because of its comprehensive SQL sections.As an Application Server Developer, I also have experience with ASP, and thismakes ASP look extremely primitive.In fact, I used the concepts of ColdFusion presented here to evaluate better solutions for projects in ASP.An example of this is the easy implementation of Dynamic SQL in Coldfusion. I then built a Dynamic SQL implementation.Thanks Mr. Forta for a greatone.If you know ASP, this book will show you what you need to engineerwithin ASP to get it to compete with Cold Fusion. Great Book. Even for beginners.

A must read if you want an alternitive to asp's
This is the BIBLE for Cold Fusion. I have read a few too many compter books. This is the first one I finished and keeped around. The CD has codeing found in the samples in the book. Very easy reading for this typeof book. It even teaches you some HTML. WOW.

Great for new CF programmers
Forta takes you from the start of Cold Fusionand SQL. If you are new to programming and SQL, this is the book for you. I was writing data interface apps in a few hours. A great book overall. Worth the read. I still use itas a reference regularly! A must have for the Cold Fusion developer.

After presenting several useful strategies and algorithms for DF and tracking performance, the book evaluates DF algorithms, software, and systems. It next covers fuzzy logic, fuzzy sets and their properties, fuzzy logic operators, fuzzy propositions/rule-based systems, an inference engine, and defuzzification methods. It develops a new MATLAB graphical user interface for evaluating fuzzy implication functions, before using fuzzy logic to estimate the unknown states of a dynamic system by processing sensor data. Just a collections of Formulas from published works
This book is NOT what it promised.

What the authors did that each wrote a chapter or two by collecting various kalman or Kalman H-infinity based filters (say from wiki-pedia) and then copied and pasted them. They latter collected the same way, performance equations (say from IEEE papers) and put them their. Matlab is not as integrated as the cover says. Actually you can find better programs by visiting [...].

This is not a way to write a book. I expected that they will write a coherent book, which derives all results from first principles and shows how to then use them in systematic way to fuse various type of information. This is not the case. The book is collections of some equations with reference where equations were derived in brackets (i.e. research publications) and nothing more. Every student has access to such equations on university networks (or even on Wikipedia). In fact it is collection of mostly "kalman filtering equations" which are NOT even derived but each equations preceded by some reference from where the actual equation comes from. The level of the book is simple by research standard.Who bothers with simple Kalman filtering anymore. In fact the chapter on performance begins with numbered dot points and some simple equations given just as someone copied them and pasted them. There are no derivations of any important results. About matlab, there are only graphs of those equations.

Simple fuzzy logic (i.e. only type-1 fuzzy logic) is presented in plain way which is available everywhere.

For readers who would like to have a coherent mathematical book which covers a general theory of information fusion is "Aggregation Functions: A Guide for Practitioners: Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing, Vol. 221" by "Gleb Beliakov". While this book is a bit expensive, it is also a systematic treatments of all what constitutes "information fusion" (perhaps with the exception of Stochastic Geometric approaches such as Random Finite Sets"). It does however covers other forms of "non-additive" measures for data fusion using Choquet and more general Sugeno integrals.

On fuzzy logic I highly recomment book by Jerry M. Mendel which covers a systematic (with full easy to follow derivations but with full rigor) type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic theory and applies it to various applications. It also provides access to full matlab programs which are regularly updated. It is by far the most readable and understandable book on fuzzy logic theory. The title of the book is "Uncertain Rule-Based Fuzzy Logic Systems". I learned a lot from it.

So unless you want certain collections of some past results published in IEEE journal papers, buy some other book on Data Fusion.

I have no bias against authors or anything, but I do care for my hard earn money and the value from this book which I got back. This book is way too expensive for its worth.

MUST HAVE as Well
If you're interested or are in the information fusion field you must have this book.

Expanded from the 1st edition, this book keeps and enhances the chapters in the first book, yet adds many important new ones, especially in the pragmatic implementation of information fusion. You must read the chapter by Dr. Steinberg on fusion applications. I've used this book and its predecessor as reference material for my dissertation! This is very useful reading and it is a wonderful broad compilation written by the who's who in the fusion community.

You can't say you're in the fusion field unless you own this book!!!

explains theory - heavy maths
The book has many contributors, explaining numerous aspects of the theory of data sensors. Several chapters go into the computational maths of analysing the data feeds. A key idea is data fusion, where you take the feeds from several sensors, in order to have more successful decision making. The redundancy of data can also be a useful check on the reliability of the decisions.

Bayesian methods also figure prominently in some discussions, when you have to work backwards from your data to infer the existence and movement of an originating object.

The reader should have a strong background in statistics.

Mostly the book shies away from talking about specific sensors; it's deliberately not meant to be a survey of products in this field.

The sad history of fusion
The world's first fission bomb (Trinity) was exploded in 1945, and the world's first fission power plant (in Obninsk, Russia) was connected to the grid in 1954, 9 years later. The world's first fusion bomb (Ivy Mike) was exploded in 1952. We'll be lucky if the fusion power plants are connected to the grid in 2052, 100 years later. The difference is so large because a fission power plant has solid fuel rods and either solid or liquid moderator, and the fuel in a fusion power plant is plasma, and it took decades to understand how difficult it is to make plasma stable. In Cory Hall at UC Berkeley in the 1990s there was an exhibit made by a graduate student of plasma physics: a plastic aquarium holding alcohol and glycerin colored with different dyes, and a little knob-regulated electric motor shaking it. When the shaking speed was small, the boundary between the two liquids was well-defined, but when it increased, the boundary became a mess. For decades, scientists have said that practical fusion is 20 years away, but this has been a moving target, Seife says because of wishful thinking. A fusion power plant would be inherently safe from Chernobyl-type disasters; it would produce a lot less radioactive waste than a fission power plant; peak deuterium would never come, unlike peak uranium. ITER (which is pronounced "eater") is supposed to be finished in 2018, but such projects often go over budget and over the deadline. When I thought about it, I realized that even if a fusion device produces less energy than what was put into it, you can put uranium and plutonium around it and use it as a neutron source for a a subcritical fission reactor, and have some of the advantages of a pure fusion power plant. An Internet search showed that this idea was not original, and in fact such experiments are planned for ITER.

Cool little book, but unfortunately pessimistic
I was glad to read a nice history of both hot and "cold" fusion for both the bomb and as a potential energy source. I was sad, though, to see how pessimistic the author is about the future of fusion energy. Maybe the future for fusion energy really is that bleak, especially with the track record of fusion being 30 years away for the past 60 years.

As an experienced fusion enthusiast I really loved this book.Great reviews of the current fusion techniques.

The Quest for the Holy Grail
"Sun in a Bottle" is an apt description of an inherently difficult and possibly impossible task.Like the Grail Quests, many desire it, most would do anything to have it, and it may be impossible to achieve.

There are reviewers here who fault the author's science.The author is a journalist writing for a general audience.He does a good enough job of presenting the story of nuclear energy from crude bombs and fission reactors to the seemingly always promised but never delivered fusion reactors.

It makes no difference that someone here did graduate studies on a tokamak reactor.That doesn't mean it's any more, or less, viable as a workable solution.It is unimportant that people in these fields believe that a workable reactor is just a few years away (that's what they always say).Science is full of time wasters.Unfortunately, we live in a period when funding is everything and science takes a back seat to reputations.The quest for fusion funding has become a career in itself.

I suspect a lot of the criticism is because of Seife's less than flattering view of the peer review process.He relates an incident (with his own involvement) where the peer review process, though followed in the usual manner, resulted in junk science being published in a peer review periodical.Those in scientific circles rely on these magazines and journals to disseminate new ideas and knowledge. Finding fault with it is not likely to garner friendly feelings for the author.But he has a point:The process is not perfect, and there are always those who will exploit any weakness in the system.

History of the Quest for Fusion Power
I read "Sun in a Bottle" because I have previously worked on tokamak technology in graduate school, and because I read a previous book by this author (Decoding the Universe), which I found to be very good.I was not disappointed because I found, like many others including at least some critics in this review list, that it was difficult to put down."Sun in a Bottle" is basically a history book, and many of the stories are quite interesting.Probably few readers will have heard all of the details of many of the stories.Like any history book, the author's biases color the stories, but how else could it be?The author does unfairly leave the reader with the impression that there is little hope for fusion power in the foreseeable future.The mainstream magnetic confinement fusion effort has demonstrated that particle and energy confinement times increase with the device size.All indications are that a useful power-producing device will have to be big.Big things are expensive.The author cringes at the price tag of $5-10 billion dollars for ITER, ignoring the fact that the US alone is spending hundreds of billions of dollars over periods of a few years to control the oil production and the profits thereof in Iraq.The point of fusion is to replace oil, so the price tag is hardly outlandish.The indication that power producing fusion devices will have to be big is actually a good thing.Fusion reactions involving deuterium produce a lot more neutrons per joule of energy released than fission reactions.If power production from tabletop fusion were actually possible, it would be relatively easy to convert plentiful uranium 238 into plutonium, and thereafter manufacture an atomic bomb. ... Over the top
The 3 stars are mostly for the quality of the book
and the photography.

At first glance, it is a most impressive cookbook.
Beautiful pictures/photography. Then, when viewing again,
the plating is just way too much. It is almost as if chives
are used as a garnish, I could picture someone with a tweezers,
carefully placing each piece of chive in "just the right place".

I expected recipes using unexpected ingredients put together;
for my taste, the combinations are just not to my liking and
I doubt I will ever make any of the recipes.

It's such a beautiful book, in and of itself, I did consider giving
it away to someone. However, I personally don't know anyone else who
would try any of the recipes.

I purchased the book, shipping including, for about $10, so not
a huge waste of money. Would I buy it again, even at such a bargain
price? No.

I'd give it 6+ stars if possible!!!
I am not the cook my girlfriend is. She has a couple hundred cookbooks and comes back to this one regularly. Never had anything that was not terrific. You may need to buy a few ingredients from an asian market or the internet. Stop reading this and get this book.

My favorite cookbook
I got this cookbook when I was living with a boyfriend who was a great cook.Between the two of us, we did probably half the recipes.I've never used so many recipes in any other cookbook.And we loved all but one or two.Really.Hugh became our guru.Teri's photos helped to whet our appetites.

YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!
If you are serious about cooking, and you want the fusion approach, this is THE book to guarantee delicious results.It is easy to follow, and even when you make a small mistake (as I did by using the marinade as the finishing sauce) the results are fabulous.Many say the ingredients are many, and if you don't live by an asian market, impossible to find, and costly:I say baloney (the best Chinese kind!) because I was just in a very small town in Southern Utah, and there was an asian market there!Sources are also available online, so no excuses.In addition, I made a 20 course dinner using these recipes and there was a large amount of prep work.But the actual cooking time was not bad.People were eating each course as I cooked it and the final cost was well below what we would have paid to feed everyone at a chain chinese restaurant.High leads you through step by step and points out the all important 'why' a certain recipe is prepared in a particular way.It's almost as good as having him right there or being in one of his classes.Unless you must cook from mixes, this is a definite plus in any serious cook's repetoire.

This book is absolutely fantastic! As other reviewers have noted all the recipes that I have tried are absolutely excellent. I am recently returning to gourmet cooking - as my creative muse has taken me in the direction of computers graphics and animation these last 3 years - and this is the first book I reached for. Last night I made Jade Sauce and Secret Asian BBQ Sauce, and they are assuredly the best things that I have tasted in 3 years!

One reviewer is right - I am lucky to live in an urban area with a large Vietnamese population. I therefore have easy access to Vietnamese grocery stores that carry all the "weird" ingredients. And they carry them for cheap - like a half to a quarter of what the same items would cost in a grocery store (if you found them there at all). Like a quart of sesame oil for $10, 5 pounds of Hoisin Sauce for $5,or a quart of Soy Sauce for $4. And some recipes do include a lot of ingredients - the bbq sauce has 18! If you do have access to an Asian market, the price of these recipes plummet into the everyday cooking budget area. Way cool.

Also seriously cool is the fact that a lot of the recipes revolve around a flavoring sauce that can be made ahead of time (some, like the bbq sauce keep forever in the refrigerator). This makes the actual dinner preparation very simple in some cases.

Let the games begin!
Very easy to read, it gets right to the point that you need. It's very helpful, and very informative. But the best part is thats its two guides in one! woOt!!

Half good, half...well...not good
This manual is great except for the Metroid Fusion section.I have done some exploring and found out that PRIMA DOESN'T EVEN SHOW THE LOCATIONS OF NEARLY HALF THE ITEMS IN THE GAME!!!How disappointing....Metroid Prime has a great walkthrough and the guide shows strategies on beating the toughest bosses, but not with Fusion!Come on Prima!I'm not trying to criticize you or anything, but I know you can work a little harder.

Two guides for the price of one, very informative
This is definitely one of the better guides I've seen for Metroid Prime.I'd give it a five but there are about two things that bother me about the guide (see below).

First of all, the guide has a very detailed and easy to use walkthrough.I loved it. Easy to follow and easy to read with great detailed maps and plenty of screenshots (which you'll undoubtably need!).There is a maps section before the walkthrough and then they show the maps again before each section of the walkthrough, which makes for far less page flipping.

The Metroid Prime section gives you the run down on everything you need for all of Samus' abilities and how to obtain them in this highly detailed walkthrough.The screenshots are clear although at times they can be a bit darker than others. Some screens are actually very hard to depict what they're trying to tell you even with the text standing out. I wouldn't consider the terrain you venture through in Metroid Prime to be quite that dark.

The Metroid Fusion section of this guide is very useful if you want to complete the entire game.Much like Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion maps seemed more like a grid and Prima did a very good job in these maps by highlighting hidden areas along the way.Using this guide it is nearly impossible to get yourself lost (although the game makes sure you don't get lost either...).Again, a run down on all Samus' abilities and a full walkthrough to help you get everything you need to defeat SA-X and save the universe!A great companion in deed.The screens are still a little darker in this section but because of the fact that Metroid Fusion has a bit more lighting in some areas than Metroid Prime, you can much more easily depict these.

My gripes with the guide. Well first of all, for Metroid Fusion it doesn't depict how to get all the different endings of the game. I do not believe they did this in Metroid Prime either.Also, there is no walkthrough for the original Metroid. This isn't too bad of a problem but the first Metroid game presents probably one of the greatest challenges in the series (aside from Prime of course) and I need more than just basic "tips" that I've already come to learn by playing other Metroid titles.My thrid gripe of course is the dark screens but they are crystal clear and you shouldn't have a problem trying to make out anything in the Metroid Fusion section.

Overall, this guide is probably your best friend in completing both of these titles. It's nice to see that there was a guide publisher that took Metroid Fusion into consideration.Both guides are good and WILL help you find everything with little hassle.
