Product Description
In recent years much enthusiasm and energy has been directedtoward the development of human gene therapies, especially forinherited conditions and cancers. However, current gene transfertechnology is limited in its transduction efficiency and ability topermanently and safely correct genomic defects. Thus the promise ofgene therapy for these conditions is as yet unrealized. Theprogression of gene transfer technology will eventually surmount theselimitations.

Gene Therapy for Acute and Acquired Diseases includes selectedexamples of ongoing studies in molecular genetics that have thepotential to evolve into human therapies for acute illnesses. Thesechapters are intended to highlight lesser known applications of genetherapy for acquired disorders. It is expected that human gene therapytrials for these conditions will be forthcoming in the near future, leading to previously unimaginable therapies. Thus, this first-everbook about gene therapy for acute and acquired diseases is intended toserve as a glimpse into the future. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for gene therapy across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E. for gene therapy. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

Product Description
Genes, which are carried on chromosomes, are the basic physical and functional units of heredity. Genes are specific sequences of bases that encode instructions on how to make proteins. Although genes get a lot of attention, it's the proteins that perform most life functions and even make up the majority of cellular structures. When genes are altered so that the encoded proteins are unable to carry out their normal functions, genetic disorders can result. Gene therapy is an experimental treatment that involves introducing genetic material into a person's cells to fight disease. Gene therapy is being studied in clinical trials for many different types of cancer and for numerous other diseases. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world. ... Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for gene therapy across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 3,300 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for gene therapy. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. Gene therapy for inflammatory diseases is a new, burgeoning field of medicine. Edited by the undisputed pioneers of this area of research, this volume is the first devoted to its topic. It contains thirteen chapters, each written by leaders in their respective fields, that summarize the state of the art in developing novel, gene based treatments for inflammatory diseases. As well as providing an introduction to the basic concepts of gene therapy and the use of naked DNA approaches, the book describes the advances that have been made in applying them to arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Sjogren's syndrome and transplantation. One chapter is devoted to discussing the first human clinical trials that apply gene therapy to the treatment of an inflammatory disease. As well as providing novel therapeutic approaches, gene therapy facilitates the development of new and improved animal models of disease; a chapter describing these advances is also included. As an up-to-date, timely book written by the le aders in the field, this volume will appeal to both medical and graduate students, medical reseachers, members of the biotechnology community, physicians and all those interested in this latest frontier of molecular medicine. ... Product Description
This book is about retrovectors, the gene transfer systems used in 80% of ongoing clinical trials of gene therapy. Retroviruses and cellular retroelements are natural gene transfer materials that have been involved in the dispersal and regulation of genes throughout eons of evolutionary history. The retroelements (so-called because of their unique property of reverse transcribing RNA sequences into DNA and integrating them into a host chromosome) naturally comprise more than a quarter of the DNA in the human genome. They are now being adapted for an important role in gene therapy. Conventional retroviruses and vector helper systems are discussed, as well as more recently developed retrotransposon and synthetic retrovectors. ... Read more
