Book Description
Building on the success of its 1993 predecessor, this 2nd edition of Geochemistry, Groundwater and Pollution has been thoroughly re-written, updated and extended into a complete and authoritative account of modern hydrogeochemistry. Offering a quantitative approach to the study of groundwater quality and the interaction of water, minerals, gases, pollutants and microbes, this book shows how physical and chemical theory can be applied to explain observed water qualities and variations over space and time. Integral to the presentation, geochemical modeling using PHREEQC code is demonstrated, with step-by-step instructions for calculating and simulating field and laboratory data. Numerous figures and tables illustrate the theory, while worked examples including calculations and theoretical explanations aid the reader in gaining a deeper understanding of the concepts involved. This book is intended for students in hydrogeology, geochemistry and civil engineering, while professionals in the water sciences will find inspiration in the practical examples and modeling templates. ... Book Description

The processes occurring in surface marine sediments have a profound effect on the local and global cycling of many elements. This graduate text presents the fundamentals of marine sediment geochemistry by examining the complex chemical, biological, and physical processes that contribute to the conversion of these sediments to rock, a process known as early diagenesis. Research over the past three decades has uncovered the fact that the oxidation of organic matter deposited in sediment acts as a causative agent for many early diagenetic changes. Summarizing and discussing these findings and providing a much-needed update to Robert Berner's Early Diagenesis: A Theoretical Approach, David J. Burdige describes the ways to quantify geochemical processes in marine sediment. By doing so, he offers a deeper understanding of the cycling of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, along with important metals such as iron and manganese.

No other book presents such an in-depth look at marine sediment geochemistry. Including the most up-to-date research, a complete survey of the subject, explanatory text, and the most recent mathematical formulations that have contributed to our greater understanding of early diagenesis, Geochemistry of Marine Sediments will interest graduate students of geology, geochemistry, and oceanography, as well as the broader community of earth scientists. It is poised to become the standard text on the subject for years to come.

Book Description
The basic philosophy of PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY is to present chemical principles that are essential for understanding environmental problems and then show how these principles can be applied to real-world problems. The latter goal is achieved by including a number of case studies in each chapter. The book is process oriented, emphasizing the tools needed to understand environmental problems, and is not a recitation of environmental problems and issues. Chemistry topics are developed from first principles and the focus is on those principles that are most useful in the environmental field. This text is more accessible than the larger, higher-level environmental geochemistry books on the market that assume familiarity with chemical and quantitative background material. The topical coverage is broad, including extensive material on the isotopic and mineralogical aspects of environmental issues and a significant chapter on the atmosphere. Case studies are integrated throughout to show the application of the various principles to real-world problems, and many of the very extensive set of end-of-chapter problems encourage students to become familiar with the scientific literature on this subject. ... Product Description
Synergetic Press is proud to announce the long-awaited release of GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE, a meticulously edited, reader accessible, first English translation of the Russian essays by Vladimir I. Vernadsky (1863-1945). Vernadsky is the highly venerated father of several geo-based disciplines, including geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and radiogeology. He wrote the first scientific theory about thebiosphere, the life zone of the Earth, and in the process laid the groundwork for planetary thinking. A recognized catalyst, this premier scientific work addresses in detail humanity s impact on the living systems of the planet. GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE contains his groundbreaking work on the biosphere and the noösphere, as well as his seminal work on geochemistry.Says Deborah Snyder, Chief Executive of Synergetic Press:The publication of these essays, written over sixty years ago, comes at an auspicious time. We have reached a point on our planet when serious debate on what to do about global warming can no longer be postponed an understanding of Vernadsky s work on the biosphere and noösphere is absolutely central to such conversations. It is our hope that bringing Vernadsky s ecological vision to the English speaking world will help deepen our understanding of planetary processes and enable us to become better stewards of our planet. Vernadsky maintains that the biosphere is a thin strata, a separategeological envelope, inhabited by living matter, the force of which exerts changes in its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Moreover, this envelope is permeated by cosmic energy, which works even greater changes. Thus the biosphere, the stage on which changes are played out, will evolve over time. According to Vernadsky, from the biosphere a noösphere -- a biosphere influenced by the activity of the human mind -- will ultimately emerge. Vernadsky writes,Mankind s power is connected not with its matter but with its brain, its thoughts and its works, guided by its mind. In the geological history of the biosphere, a great future is opened to Man if he realizes it and does not direct his mind and work to self-destruction. Snyder adds:Vernadsky was very much ahead of his time. Had his work been more widely translated, his name would be to biospherics what Einstein s is to relativity or Darwin s to evolution. In Russia there are stamps, coins, streets, monuments, museums, libraries, mountain ranges, and more that bear his name or portrait. Throughout the world there are foundations and scholarships named after him. This release in English of his most important work is a significant contribution to Earth sciences. In addition to profound insights into connections between organisms and their environment, GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE provides rare glimpses into a highly original scientific mind able to integrate knowledge of mineralogy, biochemistry, geochemistry, crystallography, soil science, and the history of science. The scope of his genius alone makes Vernadsky essential reading for scientists, academics, students, and general readers interested in understanding the present and future role of humans on the Earth. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth having ...
By the time I purchased this book I was absolutely new to the field of Environmental geochemistry and I was looking for book that would include all essential knowledge needed for succes in the course. The book comprises all crucial topics: some thermodynamic basics, aqueous chemistry, redox chemistry, isotopes. I especially appreciate solved problems ... as a guideline for study questions at the end of the chapter. However, to use and comprehend this book, you should have some backgroud of physical chemistry and thermodynamics, 'cause the introductory chapter on thermodynamics requires this kind of konwledge. The book is written in scientific style with pletny of pictures and diagrams - that are many times esseantial in order to understand the text. One more information - in thermodymaic calculations, author uses calories - just a reminder in case you are used to joules. 2-0 out of 5 stars Inefficient and ineffective.
My prof. utilized this text for the first time last semester, and assumed it would be a good text.My background was Chem I, Chem II, Organic Chem, and Quantitative Analysis.I and a classmate with a similar background both found this text to be ineffective and inefficient. For example, one must page to Chapter 5 before finding a periodic table; every chemistry text I've seen thus far includes one on the opening pages. The treatment of atomic orbital energies was the worst I've ever seen - what introductory texts handle with a few well-chosen diagrams was written out into a page of excruciating text (p 146-147). Equations were given, but it was not always readily clear what each symbol stood for; examples were nearly non-existant. I was so excited about this course and I'm just grateful that the instructor was of much higher quality than the text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.
This is not a very helpful text to anyone interested in aqueous geochemistry. One thing to consider before purchasing this text...Do you have a background in this material? If you do, then it might prove useful (i.e. professors and professionals). If not, then consider another text (i.e. students...I really don't think anyone will read a geochem text for fun).If you are a student and this is the required text, then buy another used text (see below) or checkout another text from the local/campus library to assist you.You will not find any thoroughly solved examples in this text. The so-called examples that are presented are not very helpful.Examples would have been great and considering the size of the text, one wonders why they were not included.

Book Description

Written expressly for undergraduate and graduate geologists, this book focuses on how geochemical principles can be used to solve practical problems. The attention to problem-solving reflects the authors'belief that showing how theory is useful in solving real-life problems is vital for learning. The book gives students a thorough grasp of the basic principles of the subject, balancing the traditional equilibrium perspective and the kinetic viewpoint.

The first half of the book considers processes in which temperature and pressure are nearly constant. After introductions to the laws of thermodynamics, to fundamental equations for flow and diffusion, and to solution chemistry, these principles are used to investigate diagenesis, weathering, and natural waters. The second half of the book applies thermodynamics and kinetics to systems undergoing changes in temperature and pressure during magmatism and metamorphism. This revised edition incorporates new geochemical discoveries as examples of processes and pathways, with new chapters on mineral structure and bonding and on organic matter and biomarkers. Each chapter has worked problems, and the authors assume that the student has had a year of college-level chemistry and a year of calculus.

Praise for the first edition

"A truly modern geochemistry book.... Very well written and quite enjoyable to read.... An excellent basic text for graduate level instruction in geochemistry." --Journal of Geological Education

"An up-to-date, broadly conceived introduction to geochemistry.... Given the recent flowering of geochemistry as an interdisciplinary science, and given the extent to which it now draws upon the fundamentals of thermodynamics and kinetics to understand earth and planetary processes, this timely and rigorous [book] is welcome indeed." --Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta
