Product Description

The history of Earth in the Solar System has been unraveled using natural radioactivity. The sources of this radioactivity are the original creation of the elements and the subsequent bombardment of objects, including Earth, in the Solar System by cosmic rays. Both radioactive and radiogenic nuclides are harnessed to arrive at ages of various events and processes on Earth.

This collection of chapters from the Treatise on Geochemistry displays the range of radioactive geochronometric studies that have been addressed by researchers in various fields of Earth science. These range from the age of Earth and the Solar System to the dating of the history of Earth that assists us in defining the major events in Earth history. In addition, the use of radioactive geochronometry in describing rates of Earth surface processes, including the climate history recorded in ocean sediments and the patterns of circulation of the fluid Earth, has extended the range of utility of radioactive isotopes as chronometric and tracer tools.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The book focuses on heavy metals that have damaged the ecosystem Earth and its life forms. It characterizes natural and anthropogenic sources of pollutants, identifies physical, chemical and biological conditions that affect their ecosystem mobility. The book describes the pathways by which potentially toxic metals can access and concentrate to toxic levels in organisms. The text reviews the different environmental assessment, monitoring samples and analytical techniques used to determine how sample types bond the metals and hence affect their bioavailibility and bioaccumulation. Consideration is given to existing remediation methodologies and those being researched. Finally, the book emphasizes how pre-planning during project studies can result in the incorporation of technologies that will prevent or at least greatly alleviate the release of toxic metals to our living environment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best in Their Field
The authors, two of the best-known men in their field, have surveyed the whole of the broad science of geochemistry and have brought together much of our present knowledge of the subject. The book is divided into two parts. Part I treats the general aspects of geochemistry. It deals with: the chemistry of meteorites; the abundance of elements and nuclides; the geochemical structure and evolution of the Earth; the geochemistry of the geospheres (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) and the distribution of elements therein; and the principal aspects of chemistry of the Universe, i.e., cosmochemistry. Part II contains a detailed discussion of the manner of occurrence of the elements. The Periodic Table is discussed, element by element, and the following features are individually discussed for each element: its manner of occurrence in meteorites and in the geochemical spheres of the Earth; its general geochemical character; its manner of occurrence in minerals; its course during magmatic crystallization; its role in cycles of weathering and metamorphism; its abundance in meteorites and in the rocks of the uppermost lithosphere, and its concentration in deposits of economic importance. The volume also contains a number of appendixes-among them, a table which provides the atomic and ionic radii of the elements, and tables of gravimetric conversion factors for the elements and their geochemically important compounds. A bibliography with more than seven hundred entries is included, with emphasis on special papers, as an aid for the research worker. Throughout the authors have emphasized the quantitative aspects in geochemistry and have attempted to synthesize and summarize new geochemical ideas. The book is written primarily for the use of geologists and chemists who are interested in the chemical aspects of our planet. It is also of fundamental importance to the practical and applied phases of the geological sciences, such as economic geology and prospecting.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides.Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements. ...
