5-0 out of 5 stars Dover reprint of Theory of Satellite Geodesy by W.M. Kaula
I studied with Bill Kaula from 1964-66 at UCLA and used this text extensively at that time and later while doing research and teaching in satellite geodesy. This thin book presents the derivations and details of analytic methods for calculating satellite orbits, and determining Earth's gravitational field from observations of satellites.Numerical methods are now much more accurate, but "number crunching" does not provide nearly the insights that analytic analyses can do.If you want insight into satellite orbit mechanics, this is the book to read. The first edition contained many typos and other errors which have been corrected in the Dover edition. The book provides an outstanding entry into the field of satellite geodesy.Math and physics at the upper division college level are required.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Field
A reprint of this book is long overdue because I know several people who have a crumpled photocopy of the original addition and many others who have searched for a used copy without success. This book is a must read for anyone with more than a passing interest in astrodynamics and especially gravity field modeling.

The book begins with a concise description of the earth's gravity field in terms of potential theory. After a quick refresher on matrices and orbital elements, Kaula proceeds to describe the motion of an artificial satellite. In particular, he provides a detailed analysis of gravity field perturbations upon the evolution of the orbital elements including secular effects and resonance effects. The final chapters are concerned with modeling observations used to track satellites, using the observations to estimate the true motion of the satellite, and estimating geodetic information from the motion of the satellite.

Although first published in 1966, this book remains one of the best volumes available on satellite theory and geodesy. It is still used as a reference and textbook by many if not most experts in the field. However, the work is certainly not perfect.Kaula gives a concise and complete coverage of the subject, but it comes at the cost of loads of equations with little explanatory text. This can make it somewhat difficult to follow. It is certainly not written as a popular guide for the general public.Nevertheless, many astrodynamicists are delighted to have this volume available from the good folks at Dover. ... Product Description

Introduction to Geometrical and Physical Geodesy: Foundations of Geomatics explores geodesy, the discipline dealing with the measurement and representation of the earth. Establishing GIS as a coordinate-based system, and building on this concept, the book culminates in the reader's applied knowledge of geodesy. To simplify presentation, mathematics in this book are discussed without origin or proof, and all formulas have detailed examples illustrating their use. Intended for the classroom or professional reference, this book simplifies the geodesic formulas related to surveying, making it a practical approach to geodesy and GIS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still looking for a good text
This book tries to present geodesy in a user friendly way, unlike most texts on geodesy that are not intended to help the user. However, there typo errors, poor diagrams, glossy reflective prints, too much historical baggage, etc. The discussion on ref system, ref frame and datum is long winded and not as helpful. The arrangement into geom and phy geodesy without making it useful for the practitioner needs to be rectified.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vital science course text
Introduction to Geometrical and Physical Geodesy: Foundations of Geomatics is an introductory text to geodesy: the science of measuring and representing the shape and size of the Earth, which is directly applicable to solving problems in cartography, GIS, engineering, and Earth sciences. Chapters spell out the basic tools and concepts of geodesy, as well as the distinction between and fundamental problems of geometrical versus physical geodesy. From different types of map projections, to angles and point positioning, heigh systems, the influence of tides and more, Introduction to Geometrical and Physical Geodesy is a solid, user-friendly reference and resource ideal for self-teaching or as a vital science course text. Black-and-white diagrams, example problems with solutions, and appendices offering a refresher on vector algebra, linear algebra, and spherical trigonometric identities round out this absolutely indispensable addition to college library and reference shelves.

Product Description
The third edition of this well-known textbook, firstpublished in 1980, has been completely revised; in order to adequatelyreflect the drastic changes which occurred in the field of geodesy inthe last twenty years. Reference systems are now well established byspace techniques, which dominate positioning and gravity fielddetermination. Terrestrial techniques still play an important role atlocal and regional applications, whereby remarkable progress has beenmade with respect to automatic data acquisition. Evaluation methodsare now three-dimensional in principle, and have to take the gravityfield into account. Geodetic control networks follow thesedevelopments, with far-reaching consequences for geodeticpractice. Finally, the increased accuracy of geodetic products andhigh data rates has significantly increased the contributions ofgeodesy to geodynamics research, thus strengthening the role ofgeodesy within the geosciences. The present state of geodesy isillustrated by recent examples of instruments and results. Anextensive reference list supports further studies. ... Read more

Product Description
"Physical Geodesy" by Heiskanen and Moritz, published in 1967, has for a long time been considered as the standard introduction to its field. The enormous progress since then, however, required a complete reworking. While basic material could be retained other parts required a complete update. This concerns, above all, the adaptation to the fact that the geometry can now be precisely determined by methods such as GPS, and that new satellite methods, combined with terrestrial methods, also make a detailed determination of the earth's gravitational field a possibility and a necessity. Highlights include: emphasis on global integration of geometry and gravity, a simplified approach to Molodensky's theory without integral equations, and a general combination of all geodetic data by least-squares collocation. In the second edition minor mistakes have been corrected. ... Read more

This is the standard text in geodesy, and it is exclusively used at Ohio State University. It is very thorough and it is written at the 4th year level. It is also the book you want for Helmut Moritz's complete improvement of his 1967 book, entiled "PhysicalGeodesy" without any deletions and all new improvements. It does in fact come in "hard back and this is the only way to purchase it for lifetime reference!" It is the only one written in English that not only derives the formulas; but covers all existing topics in this field. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars this is a very overpriced general introduction book..
I put this book in the same catgory as the ebay ripoff books, It's a very thin book with one page discussions on various topics, and simple cave man style geometry drawings.

So if you don't need it as a college text book, then please get a better book, as this one is nearly useless to understand how anything works in any concrete manner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but needs works
This book was on average OK. I thought it was a good overview but at the end I don't think I got as much as I wanted from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background for people interested in GIS and cartography
I bought this book to fill in knowledge gaps, not to learn geodesy as an expert. It answered lots of questions I had had about measurements, how surveys are performed, geodetic systems (datums and so on), the WGS, and the use of gravity. The details are all there, within about 100 pages in the middle of the book. Not bad at all.

This subject by its nature requires a mathematical treatment, so although the book does not go deeply into the math, it's sometimes heavy reading. Many of the illustrations deserve careful study, too. It's not light bedtime reading.I carried this book around for several days during and after a large GIS conference and periodically dipped into it.It works well in small doses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only partly successful in illuminating a tough subject.
Reading this book I got the feeling that Mr. Smith couldn't quite decide if his audience was the layman or the surveying professional. For example, very little mathematics is used (even though there are topics in the bookwhich would have been better served by a more mathematical treatment),while on the other hand many terms are used as though the reader should befamiliar with them already.

I found the lack of a glossary frustrating,as was Mr. Smith's habit of using concepts chapters ahead of theirdefintion. The difficult subject matter was further obscured by numerouserrors in the figures and text (such as refering to velocity as the secondintegral of acceleration.)

In the end, the book did give me a goodqualitative feel for the issues germane to geodesy, but I had to work veryhard to extract that information and found myself immediately looking for amore perspicuous text.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall coverage of the history of modern geodesy
I found Mr. Smith's book to be very informative and well written. He covers many aspects of geodesy from early history to modern application. He is apparently very knowledgable and has a broad spectrum of experiences which he writes about. There are some instances when Mr. Smith tells a large amount of information, maybe more than the average reader would require. There are other times that I wished he would tell me more.He has a writing style that tends to skip around alot.Just hang in there and you will get the information in another chapter. There is always the bibliography for reference, if, Mr. Smith didn't cover it, which is rare indeed. He covers such obscure subjects such as: coriolis effect, isostasy and dynamic heights.Throughout the book all of the illustrations are simple yet understandable in almost all cases. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars strang interprets the meaning of the math
I am an engineer with an interest in math.

What strikes me about Gilbert Strang's writing on math is the running commentary he provides on what the math means. When introducing the concept of a vector, for example, he points out that vectors a result of the insight that "you can't add apples to oranges."

He is very strong on visualizing what is going in his proofs and spends many pages pointing out interpretative details that are simple to explain to a reader but hard for a reader to figure out on their own. Those details are rarely found in other math books.I think part of the problem is that most math books are written for people who have a natural talent for math and few are written for technically oriented people that are interested but not especially talented.

It is a shame that his style of writing is not more commonly found in math books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strang and Borre's 'LINEAR ALGEBRA, GEODESY AND GPS'
This is an interesting, gently accelerating and useful book on geodesy and GPS that concentrates on space geodetic concepts and algorithms and on the underlying linear algebra. It uses MATLAB, the language of choice for manynumerical linear algebraists, to provide sample codes. Many of these codesare of practical utility. This book combines Strang's applied math focusand inimitable writing style (I love it) with Borre's extensive knowledgeof physical and geometrical geodesy. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description

The book has evolved through the author's 25 years of advising and writing on geodetic methods in which the aspect of learning by doing is stressed, including analyses of quality. Consequently, it covers practical aspects of geometrical geodesy and particulars of fundamental constants, horizontal and vertical datums, geoids, bi-axial ellipsoids and reference systems, units of frequencies and time, conformal projections, similarity transformations and spatial developments in electronic and acoustic positioning frames. The impact of information, communication and parallel computer technology with an ability to store and retrieve huge amounts of data is discussed up to the point where the compilation of relevant data is completely automated using comprehensive analyses on a worldwide distribution network.

All Fortran computer subroutines described in the book can also be found on the enclosed CD-ROM, including compiled ready-to-run Fortran programs. A computer of modest capacity can cope with the algorithms.

GEODESY. CHAPTER I. some primitive notions. What do we mean by primitive notions? Not alone such as have found lodgment in the minds of ancient peoples, but those which were first deemed sufficient to account for observed phenomena. As soon as a fact is perceived, a great advance is made ; nor is progress arrested before a cause is formulated ; the existence of a problem tempts a solution, the propounded question challenges an answer. Primitive ideas exist to-day as well as when the first man let fall his questioning gaze upon the unknown around him. A North American Indian at this very hour may be laying down an hypothesis to satisfy some unsolved problem that is just as crude as the one which came for that same problem to the East Indian centuries ago. Both were primitive in the intellectual development of the originators* though one far antedated the 2

Product Description
For many years, digital signal processing has been governed by the theory of Fourier transform and its numerical implementation. The main disadvantage of Fourier theory is the underlying assumption that the signals have time-wise or space-wise invariant statistical properties. In many applications the deviation from a stationary behavior is precisely the information to be extracted from the signals. Wavelets were developed to serve the purpose of analysing such instationary signals. The book gives an introduction to wavelet theory both in the continuous and the discrete case. After developing the theoretical fundament, typical examples of wavelet analysis in the Geosciences are presented. The book has developed from a graduate course held at The University of Calgary and is directed to graduate students who are interested in digital signal processing. The reader is assumed to have a mathematical background on the graduate level. ... Read more
