2-0 out of 5 stars very general
I checked this out from the library and was glad that I didn't buy it without reading it.It has very few equations and algorithms, and is more of a general overview or listing of computations done in GIS.Those hoping for a cookbook for geometric and analytic geography operations would best turn to Keith Clark's Analytic and Computer Cartograhy or a even good survey handbook for a better overview of the most important algorithms and formulas. ... From the supplier: Geographic information systems (GIS) are becoming increasingly important to planners, especially those beginning a career track. These computer-aided mapping devices allow planners to outline, pinpoint and visualize changes in the natural landscape of a community. The comfort level of planners dealing with the automation of mapping has increased sharply since a survey taken four years earlier. Some urban planners require GIS skills for all newly employed planners, and others pay incentives for those demonstrating expertise in the technology.

In my original review, I questioned whether a VDOT road map was a GIS system or not.The image appeared to me to be a scanned road map. After some research, George Korte, the author, responded that the map was produced by Intergraph's MGE GIS and cartographic publishing system.I thank the author for getting back to me on this issue. -Jonathan Soulen

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for GIS beginners
Book was very helpful, and will be my desk reference. However, I do have one comment and question. The highway map shown on page 12 looks like a scanned state road map.The map may have been computer generated, but is it a true GIS?I don't think so.In these early days (years) of GIS, many computer generated maps have been portrayed as GIS, when they are not. This is due to confusion and plain lack of understanding.I think this has hurt the GIS field, and will only be overcome by time and the growth of the GIS applications ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vast New Applications
With the incipient rise of the mobile web, this book describes potentially vast new applications for Geographic Information Systems. New cellphones now often have GIS locator capability builtin. Plus, we can easily imagine other mobile devices like laptops, PDAs and vehicles having GIS by default. Combine this with an ever-increasing pervasive web, as suggested by WiFi and next generationWiFi, and you can see the need for ever more GIS databases. Where these would have street information, for example.

One future direction is in developing innovative ways to query the GIS data, and to hook it up to other databases, like weather maps.

Thus far, GIS has existed for what will one day be seen as small, specialised applications, like oceanside and mining activities. In reality, the much larger markets exist in urban areas, where most people are. By checking out this book, you can get a feel for how these new applications might be developed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I am using this book for a graduate level class on GIS applications in public health and it has proven to be tremendously helpful. I didn't know a thing about GIS before but, this book helps to provide the basics and clearly explains the applications of GIS in today's health systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Public Health Students and New Practitioners
Dr. Melnick's years' of experience praciticing and teaching public health tactics and strategies come through in this comprehensive overview of geographic information systems for public health.A valuable, understandable reference for the novice or professional. It should be part of every public health training program and on the reference shelf of every health department in the country.Dr. Melnick's book is also facinating reading for anyone interested in learning more about the public health world.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best GIS related book focussing on Public Health
The scoop:
* Book consistently focuses on GIS usage in healthcare.
* Practically applicable ideas.
* Exhaustive and highly informative lessons learnt chapter.
* Very clear and crisp presentation.
* IT part needs better information.

I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Melnick. He is clearly a subject matter expert. Knows the micro and macro problems and opportunities in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Public Health GIS by A Melnick
This is a serious book for the serious student of both public health and geographical information systems. Not difficult, but certainly serious.Dr. Melnick does an excellent job of introducing us to GIS and then walking us through the application of GIS to various public health areas (environmental health, communicable diseases, injuries, chronic diseases, and assessment). At each point he carefully notes the applicable principles, what the data and GIS application demonstrate, and the strengths and weaknesses of the GIS approach. This should become the standard learning tool for GIS and Health.

The book probably over references and over describes specific software programs and companies (e.g. see the discussion of Maptitude and Version 3.0 and 4.0 and HUD....) - these are outdated in 12 months.

Obviously, the book needs a CD-ROM (or web site) with data sets and the capacity to play with some of the data. The main point of the book is doing the picture and thinking about what you end up with.Without a CD-ROM or web site we are left short of really being able to get it.

In summary, despite some drawbacks this book is a winner.By the end you will not know how to do GIS, but you will know that you need to find a way to know it ... Read more

Book Description

Managers charged with the task of creating an effective geographic information system (GIS) for their organization often find that they are faced with two problems: mastering the GIS technology and managing its effective introduction and use. Existing literature in the field has focused almost entirely on explaining and teaching GIS technology, and ignored issues of implementation. In an attempt to fill that gap, this accessible volume provides a practical guide as well as a theoretical foundation of the key organizational and behavioral dynamics that can determine where a GIS should be used and how it can be employed successfully.

Book Description
In today's society, it is very common for decisions that influence us all to be made by a combination of interested parties, all with their own agenda. In this instance, how can we be sure that the decision is the correct one, not just decided by the group with the most political influence or most money? Such groups have now become fundamental decision-making units within and between organisations in most societies and are more often than not very complex structures. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Groupware can be used in several practical contexts to make sure that spatial decision problems are overcome in the most effective way. A fundamental aspect of a spatial decision problem is the matter of location. The complexity of spatial decision problems result from the multiplicity of stakeholders involved, their often conflicting interests, and the intangible variables of the decision environment. Examples of such problems include: where to locate a public facility, which brownfield redevelopment strategy to choose, which sites to select for environmental restoration, or which comprehensive land use plan to adopt. Good solutions to such problems -if they exist at all- are characterised by a certain minimum level of secretarial support; hence the decision-making process should involve experts, citizens, and interest groups alike. Such a collaborative approach to spatial decision-making needs methodology, tools, and application examples to inspire its adoption and more widespread use. This book sets out the key to the collaborative spatial decision-making approach: its theoretical basis, the requisite tools, and a number of application examples. GIS professionals and researchers should find this an invaluable guide to an emerging area of GIS ... Read more

Book Description
Urban planners who need to design information systems require an understanding of systems analysis, data acquisition and GIS. In recent times the need has been to make computer-based maps by using a GIS, but planners now need tools for co-operative work using groupware systems, for global visualization and real-time monitoring of urban activities and phenomena. Planners have moved beyond drawing land use plans, to examining the evolution of urban activities to monitor and analyze urban societal and environmental problems. Both practitioners and students will find this book useful, provided they have an adequate grounding in computing, data analysis and GIS and they are looking to use and design computer systems for developing maps and written statements for city planning. Therefore, novel tools like using multimedia information systems and GIS will become an increasingly important, eventually essential part of the job. ... Read more
