Editorial Review

Book Description
As Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have developed and their applications have been extended, the issue of uncertainty has become increasingly recognized. It is highlighted by the need to demystify the inherently complex geographical world to facilitate computerization in GIS, by the inaccuracies that emerge from man-machine interactions in data acquisition, and by error propagation in geoprocessing. Users need to be well aware of the likely impacts of uncertainties in spatial analysis and decision-making. This book discusses theoretical and practical aspects of spatial data processing and uncertainties, and covers a wide range of types of errors and fuzziness and emphasizes description and modeling. High level GIS professionals, researchers and graduate students will find this a constructive book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This text describes late-1990s understanding of map generalization in the context of paper maps and GIS. Its particular value should be in helping to further automate and measure the process of map generalization.; The research has concentrated on quantifying generalization effects and on analyzing how these effects of generalization locked into the maps were measured. Elsa Joao's book covers the background to the problems of map generlization; the methodology developed by the author to investigate the consequences of the map generalization; a detailed description of results, and a conclusion that draws together consequences for the broader applications to GIS. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Marine and coastal applications are finally gaining wide acceptance in scientific as well as GIS communities, and cover the fields of deep sea geology, chemistry and biology, and coastal geology, biology, engineering and resource management. Comprising rigorous contributions from a group of leading scholars in marine and coastal GIS, this book will inspire and stimulate continued research in this important new application domain. Launched as a project to mark the UN International Year of the Ocean (1998), and supported by the International Geographical Union's Commission on Coastal Systems, Marine and Coastal Geographical Information Systems covers progress and research in the marine and coastal relms, in the areas of theory, applications and empirical results. It is the first book of its kind to address basic and applied scientific problems in deep sea and coastal science using GIS and remote sensing technologies. It is designed for GIS and remote sensing specialists, but also for those with an interest in oceans, lakes and shores. Coverage ranges from the seafloor spreading centres to Exclusive Economic Zones to microscale coastal habitats; and techniques included in submersibles, computer modelling, image display, 3-D temporal data visualisation, and development and application of new algorithms and spatial data structures. It illustrates the broad usage of GIS, image processing, and computer modelling in deep sea and coastal environments, and also addresses important institutional issues arising out of the use of these technologies. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Advances in automated data collection are creating massive databases and a whole new field, Knowledge Discovery Databases (KDD), has emerged to develop new methods of managing and exploiting them. Geographic Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery is the interrogation of large databases using efficient computational methods. The unique challenges brought about by the storing of massive geographical databases -from high resolution satellite-based systems to data from intelligent transportation systems, for example -has led to the field of Geographical Knowledge Discovery (GKD). Geographic or spatial data mining is the exploration of these geographical information databases. Developed out of contributions to the highly-respected Varenius Project in 1999, this collection will be the definitive volume focusing on GKD and addresses the special challenges to be found in knowledge discovery and data mining from geographic databases. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of key areas
The book does a nice job of covering a lot of the key areas and outstanding problems in the area of geographic data mining.Although it does have some coverage of temporal problems related to the field, it would benefit from more coverage of this up and comming research area.Overall a great way to quickly get familliar with the research in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very complet book on very specific subject
I think it's the lone book which speaks in a such level of details of data mining applied to geographic problems in a sort of overview of all of them.
The most interesting chapters are for me in the part 3 of the book more focus of classical data mining algorithms but in integrating a geographic (x/y) component.
Even if the book lakes a little bit of concistency because it's a sum of articles of different autors this book should be in your own library if you do data mining, geomarketng or both. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Database research in the last decade has increasingly focused on providing support for non-standard applications. One important domain is representation and processing of spatial information, needed, e.g., in geographical information systems. Spatial data types provide a fundamental abstraction for modeling the structure of geometric entities, their relationships, properties and operations. This monograph is an extensive survey of this field and introduces a new, general, sophisticated framework for the formal definition and robust implementation of spatial data types. ... Read more
