Product Description

This introductory text details the land surface of the earth in a readable style covering the major issues, key themes and sensitivities of the environments/landscape. Emphasizing the major ideas and their development, each chapter includes case studies and details of influential scientists (not necessarily geomorphologists) who have contributed to the progress of understanding. Providing a very clear explanation of the understanding achieved and of the debates that have arisen, the book is comprised of 12 chapters in four sections:

  • Visualizing the land surface explains and explores the composition of the land surface and outlines how it has been studied
  • Dynamics of the land surface considers the dynamics affecting the earth’s land surface including its influences, processes and the changes that have occurred
  • Environments of the land surface looks to understand the land surface in major world regions highlighting differences between the areas
  • Management of the land surface is an examination of the current and future prospects of the management of the earth’s land surface

Product Description

This re-issue, first published in 1964, is the first of a seminal series analysing the development of the study of landforms, from both the geographical and geological point of view, with especial emphasis upon fluvial geomorphology. Volume 1 treats the subject up to the first important statement of the cycle of erosion by W. M. Davis in 1889, and attempts to identify the most significant currents of geomorphic thought, integrating them into the broader contemporary intellectual frameworks with which they were associated. As well as dealing with such key figures as Werner, De Saussure, Hutton, Playfair, Buckland, lyell, Agassiz, Ramsay, Dana, Peschel, Powell, Gilbert and Davis, attention is also given to many less important contributions by American, British and continental workers. A spirited biographical treatment, attractively set off by contemporary portraits, diagrams and sketches, will make this book of great interest to the historian of science, and indeed to the general reader, as well as to the student and scholar in geomorphology, hydrology and any other earth science.

Product Description
How will global environmental change affect the landscape and our interaction with it? Apart from climate change, there are other important catalysts of landscape change, including relief, hydroclimate and runoff, sea level variations and human activity. This volume summarizes the state-of-the-art concerning the geomorphic implications of global environmental change, analyzing such effects on lakes, rivers, coasts, reefs, rainforests, savannas, deserts, glacial features, and mountains. Providing a benchmark statement from the world's leading geomorphologists on the current state of, and potential changes to, the environment, this book is invaluable for advanced courses on geomorphology and environmental science, and as a reference for research scientists. Interdisciplinary in scope, with a primary audience of Earth and environmental scientists, geographers, geomorphologists and ecologists, it also has a wider reach to those concerned with the social, economic and political issues raised by global environmental change, and is useful to policy makers and environmental managers. ... Product Description
Written by a team of international experts, this book is divided into three sections, which consider historical, functional, and applied mountain geomorphology from both global and local perspectives. The historical perspective focuses on the formation of landforms, the functional emphasizes the interaction between processes and landforms, and the applied concerns the interrelationships between geomorphological processes and society. This will be a valuable source of information for interested readers at all levels. ... Read more

Product Description
Since the late 1980s earth scientists have begun to view the relationships between global tectonics and the Earths macroscale topographic features as an important research issue. This new research emphasis has emerged from a range of practitioners within the earth sciences, including geophysicists concerned with what can be learnt about tectonic processes from their topographic effects, geologists interested in the factors controlling erosion and the supply of material to sedimentary basins, and geomorphologists wanting to understand the role of tectonics in landscape evolution. Various technical developments and new sources of data have also contributed to these developments, such as the construction of coupled tectonic surface process numerical models of large-scale landscape development, the creation of large-area, high resolution digital elevation models, and the derivation of long-term denudational records using methods such as thermochronology.

This book presents the state of current research on the inter-relationships between global tectonics and macroscale landscape development across a wide range of topics and study areas. Each chapter aims to provide up-to-date surveys of key research questions,to report on important current work, and to highlight outstanding research issues. The book will be invaluable to those across the earth science community who are interested in the relationships between tectonics and topography. ... Read more

Describes and analyzes global causes, effects and dynamics of floods and includes methods for related environmental management. Reviews recent advances in the interdisciplinary study of floods and their effects on landforms, sediments, human works, and populations. Covers the use of morphometric parameters of drainage basins and establishes standard procedures for measuring geomorphically significant variables following a major flood. Specific chapters present data on the neglected topic of sedimentation in bedrock fluvial systems, and discuss, from the viewpoint of Holocene stratigraphy, common alluvial systems leading to flood plains. Includes numerous photos, illustrations and diagrams of flood effects around the world. ... Read more

This textbook, which has proven very popular with students as well as professionals, is now available in a revised, updated edition. The book includes completely new chapters on such topics as the applications of remote sensing imagery, monitoring sediment yield, and aeolian problems in drylands. New and recent techniques are included, and the number of photographs and case studies has been increased while the overall structure has been retained, and the emphasis on land-systems has been down graded and the geographical coverage of the case studies has been extended, especially for North America and Europe. The book will be of value not only to geomorphologists, but also to environmental managers -- particularly engineers concerned with planning, design and construction -- and to urban planners in various fields. ... Product Description
Geomorphology is the scientific study of landforms and the processes that shape them whereas plate tectonics specifically describes the large scale motions of Earth's lithosphere. This book presents theory, methodology and applications, as well as studies of specific geographic regions. A model to evaluate the effect of groundwater fluctuations on the development of gullies and hence, on landscape evolution is analysed. The use of cosmogenic nuclides in geomorphology and earth-surface processes is also reviewed and uncertainties and limitations related to current understanding of the physical properties of cosmogenic nuclides are summarised. In addition, this book studies plate tectonics in several regions of the world, including Siberia, Western North America, North Africa, India, and Northwest Australia. ... Read more

Product Description
Dams profoundly impact the geomorphology of rivers by altering the natural patterns of water, sediment and energy flow in rivers. These changes have a largely negative impact on aquatic and riparian ecosystems upstream and downstream of the dam. Natural dams also impact river geomorphology, although with positive and negative repercussions for aquatic and riparian organisms.
In 2002, the 33rd Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium convened under the theme "Dams and Morphology", and featured invited papers and contributed posters on topics of natural dams, artificial dams, and dam removal, 14 of these papers have been included in this volume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Professional or Student Geologist
This book, Geomorphology from Space: A Global Overview of Regional Landforms was published in 1986 by NASA and was designated NASA Special Publication (SP) NASA SP-486.This large format, 717 page, book contains numerous black and white and color plates taken from Earth orbit and examines various geological landforms. This book provides space photography and technical descriptions of regional landforms, tectonic landforms, volcanic landforms, fluvial landforms, deltaic landforms, coastal landforms, Karst landforms and lakes, Eolian landforms, glaciers and glacial landforms, planetary landforms, geomorphological mapping, and global geomorphology:To enhance the written descriptions, the authors include numerous ground-level on site photographs.

While this book contains numerous photographs, it is important to note that the thrust of this book is to provide in depth technical descriptions of the various landforms. As a result, this text maybe difficult for people without a geology or technical background to understand and follow (including this reviewer at times). In summary, if you know geology, like high quality space photography, are out for a challenge, or want to learn a whole bunch about our planet, this book is for you

Due to the limited and one time only production run of 5000 copies, this book is difficult to obtain, but it can be found in many university libraries, at used book sellers and in electronic form (pdf).
