4-0 out of 5 stars I love this huge old book.
Out of print, but available as a used book.I love this huge (1300 page)old book with its hand-drawn sketches, old black-and-white photographs, andcolorful descriptions.Philosophical, poetic, historical, an antique and aclassic.Geomorphology is largely a descriptive science -- concerned withnaming, classifying, and ordering phenomena, and the processes underlyingthe phenomena. This book is the place to find the meaning of terms such aspeneplain, mima mound, monadnock, and mogote. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great for university students
I find this book an excellent reference book for the study of coastal geomorphology. We have just finished a long coastal assignment and this was a major reference for my essay. It is easy to read and understand and if you live near a coast as we do in New Zealand, you can read and study at the same time. A great book. Thanks for your prompt delivery, that was my most hoped for wish, that it would get hear on time. It Did.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Many advances have been made in our understanding of tropical geomorphology in recent decades, but the field remains relatively neglected. With current widespread concern about the damage to tropical ecosystems, it is time for a new study of geomorphology in the tropics. The author endeavours to provide a tropical perspective on geomorphology, rather than a compartmentalised "tropical" geomorphology. The importance of weathering and the materials of the weathered mantle in determining the outcome of erosional processes is emphasised. The impact of Quaternary climate changes in creating superficial forms and deposits is stressed as being fundamental in the tropics as in other parts of the world. Nevertheless, the tropical landscape exhibits forms and deposits that have evolved over long time-periods in the absence of frost and ice, justifying an evolutionary approach to the long-term development of landscape. The book is important to a broad spectrum of earth science interests including geotechnical and engineering studies, and soil science, as well as to students of geomorphology. People working in the tropics will encounter the processes and products of tropical denudation systems, and the fragile nature of many of the surface materials discussed in this volume demands a deeper understanding of their behaviour. No other book currently attempts this task and this study fills a serious gap in the literature of geomorphology. ... Read more

Product Description
Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systems presents the papers of the 32nd Annual Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium, held in 2001 in advance of the United Nations-designated '2002 International Year of Mountains'.

The three co-editors have collectively worked in mountain environments for over 70 years, and brought together internationally recognized experts in mountain geomorphology from 7 nations presenting research on mountain processes from around the world, including the USA, Canada, China, Europe, and South America.

The volume utilizes Earth Systems as a unifying and organizing theme, examining the interactions of the four Earth "spheres" (Lithosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere) in the context of geomorphic processes in mountain environments. The volume is also a "Festschrift" in honor of Professor John D. "Jack" Vitek, long-time editor of Geomorphology and an outstanding mentor to each of the three co-editors.Papers presented in the volume represent cutting-edge examinations of mountain landforms, geomorphic processes in mountains, and the application of advanced remote sensing and Geographic Information Science technologies for the study of mountain geomorphology.

The book should be of interest to all geomorphologists, and to physical geographers and geologists interested in mountain environments.Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systems is the only book of its kind, and stands as a testament to the importance of mountains as locations for studying the interaction of geomorphic processes within an Earth Systems perspective. ... Product Description
Rivers show a remarkable diversity of character and behavior in any catchment.Human activities have impacted profoundly on the inherent variability in patterns and rates of river adjustment, altering what rivers look like, how they behave, and the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. This book outlines geomorphic considerations for river management and a generic set of procedures, termed the River Styles framework, which provides a set of tools for interpreting river character, behavior, condition, and recovery potential.

River management programs that "work with nature" must respect the inherent diversity and behavioral regime of aquatic ecosystems. Each catchment should be managed in its own right, recognizing the patterns and connectivity of river forms and processes, as shaped by the configuration of the system and responses to disturbance events. Applications of the River Styles framework generate a coherent package of geomorphic information that provides a physical template for river rehabilitation activities.

This book is essential reading for a wide range of river practitioners, including students, technical officers, consultants, and academics. ... Read more

Product Description

Introduction to Process Geomorphology provides an integrative approach to the process dynamics and the origin of landforms by the contemporary processes involved in their evolution. The author highlights the physical and chemical laws governing the activity of the earth-surface processes in specific environmental stress conditions and puts forward competing hypotheses on the evolution of landforms, and discusses the bases of internal geologic processes for the explanation of the tectogenic features of the earth.

Landforms also evolve over a long period of cyclic and geologic time, inheriting the imprints of past process rates and/or process domains. The principles and methods of evaluating the signature of environmental change are highlighted in the text by citing suitable studies. The process-form relationships provide the building blocks also for the optimum utilization of the land resources of the earth, and quantitative assessment of the stability of geomorphic systems and the quality of environment. The approach in this part of the text enables readers to gain an in-depth understanding of the application of the principles of geomorphology to the evaluation, planning and management of the earth’s resources for sustainable development.

This book discusses process dynamics in quantitative terms and reviews theories on the evolution of landforms that flow from theoretical and empirical data. It offers examples and case studies that enable students to comprehend the related components of process-landform relationships. The review and synthesis of information found in each chapter provides a better understanding of the complexity of still inadequately-understood process activities and the manner of landform evolution.

Product Description
World Geomorphology deals with the large scale relief features of the earth and shows how these are related to the major segments of the earth's crust known as lithospheric plates. The aim of the book is to convey an understanding of the earth's major relief features and to present a subdivision of the earth's surface in provinces which have had similar geological or geomorphological history. The book starts by presenting the reader with the basic geological column and the means of subdividing the landscape into areas with a common origin and developmental history, and gives an explanation of the basic principles of plate tectonics. The continental and oceanic areas of each lithospheric plate are then described: successive chapters deal with the African Plate, American plate, Antarctic plate, Asian plate, the European plate and the Pacific plate, indicating the regional geomorphological features after a brief geological introduction. This encyclopedic volume will provide a valuable reference for students of geology and geography. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book unless you're only interested in North American regions
This book is horrible, I used it as a source for one of my geology presentations and all the information I got from it concerning the Arabian plate was wrong.Several of my classmates used it too because they, like I, thought we had found the perfect book. The professor came up to us individually and let us know we all had severely wrong statements in our presentations.I suggest that if you buy this book, you should cross check EVERYTHING with multiple sources.Which kind of defeats the purpose of buying the book in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars great great book
This is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in geomorphology. A great overview of mega-landforms around the world, what used to be characterized as "physiography"; geomorphology at a coarse, broad scale. Where are the mountains ranges, plateaus, and plains regions of the world? This book answers those questions, providing explanations for these broad patterns across the globe (plate tectonics, etc).Great great book. Great! ... Read more

Product Description
Karst terrains - irregular limestone regions characterized by sinkholes, underground streams and caverns - have long been of interest because of the dramatic landscapes and the challenge of cave exploration. But the geomorphology and hydrology of karst drainage systems are now of interest to water supply specialists, urban planners, and environmental engineers. This graduate-level text discusses the chemistry of karst waters, the processes of sedimentary in-filling, the origins of caves, and the evolution of karst systems through geologic time. Since karst develops predominently by chemical processes, this text is written from the point of view of the chemistry of limestone solution. The approach is more quantitive and process-oriented than that of existing textbooks, and the author includes material on environmental problems in karst regions, including land use and land management, water supply, and pollution control. ... Product Description
Sand dunes cover up to a quarter of many desert regions. Understanding the factors that determine their shape, size and dynamics is important to an understanding of many aspects of the geomorphology and ecology of desert regions, as well as to resource management in these areas.

This book offers a comprehensive understanding of how desert dunes are formed, how they change and their environmental importance. Analyzing dune types, patterns, sand seas and sediments, and dune dynamics and processes at different temporal and spatial scales, the author draws on extensive research from the deserts of South Africa, North America, India, Northern Europe and Australia.

Investigating the role of climatic change, The Geomorphology of Desert Dunes concludes that a better understanding of dune processes and dynamics is vital for effective and appropriate mitigation of environmental problems in arid regions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Old, but still essential.
Like the previous reviewer, I first encountered this book several decades ago. As a freshman major in geology I saw this book in the campus bookstore and bought it thinking I'd use it as a textbook the following year. The next year the text was changed to the classic by Thornbury. However I found Lobeck to be invaluable for the encyclopedic coverage, vivid descriptions, and classic illustrations.

Fast forward to 2010 and I find myself teaching geomorphology. Emphasis has changed through the years from classic description of landscapes (Physiography) to emphasis on processes.

This change has resulted in texts that emphasize an understanding (frequently shallow) of process with insufficient description of the geomorphic feature whose formation is supposedly being explained. Understanding of processes still requires proper description of the products of those processes and I find myself referring back to classics such as Thornbury, Cotton, and especially Lobeck. The master of description and illustration is still the master.

4-0 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie
This was my text decades ago. I bought a copy solely for the illustrations which are as good as I remembered them. The text is, obviously, thoroughly outdated, but a good drawing has a timeless quality. ... Read more
