The book documents and explains, in three parts, geochemical anomaly and mineral prospectivity mapping by using a geographic information system (GIS). Because methods of geochemical anomaly mapping and mineral potential mapping are highly specialized yet diverse, the book explains only methods in which GIS plays an important role. The book avoids using language and functional organization of particular commercial GIS software, but explains, where necessary, GIS functionality and spatial data structures appropriate to problems in geochemical anomaly mapping and mineral potential mapping. Because GIS-based methods of spatial data analysis and spatial data integration are quantitative, which can be complicated to non-numerate readers, the book simplifies explanations of mathematical concepts and their applications so that the methods demonstrated would be useful to professional geoscientists, to mineral explorationists and to research students in fields that involve analysis and integration of maps or spatial datasets. Excellent Springboard
This book is incredibly readable even for someone just getting started in GIS managing. Visual stunning pictures and enlightening figures dot every single page. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the science and practice of GIS management.

The uses and applications of GIS

Little prior information is assumed here: chapters start with the basics such as the characteristics of GIS data and moves to more advanced topics on managing and storing such data. From digital and video cameras to wavelength processing and active sensors, REMOTE SENSING FOR GIS MANAGERS is easy to access, yet packed with technical information. Very highly recommended.

Not technically oriented, this shows the what not the how
Much of the information put into GIS systems presents a view from overhead. This obviously lends itself to generating that data from overhead imagery collected by airplane or satellite. This book presents a good introduction of collecting and more important, using this kind of data.

As you might guess from the title, the book is aimed at the manager who is trying to get information from the GIS system/department. About half the book is on the sensors and sensor platforms. This includes not only sensors that operate in visible light, but also light in other frequencies such as infrared, and active sensors such as sonar, radar and lidar. Chapter 12 is on the applicatiosn of remote sensing within the specific firlds of agriculture, forestry, geology, meteorology, oceanography, climatology, archaeology, military and other areas including business intelligence.

Being a businessman, I was surprised at the infomation available from imagry. There is an overhead picture of a container port. Over time it shows that the loading/unloading cranes haven't moved and that a line of containers has been shown in photographs for some months. Perhaps this is an indication of deteriorating business conditions. Other images show new production buildings being built in an industrial plant indicating improving conditions.

Most of the book is by Stan Aronoff, but he has called on other experts for selected chapters. Fascinating book.

combine business needs and GIS capabilities
Aronoff deals with the issue of integration. Of teaching a nontechnical GIS manager the essentials of GIS. So that she can understand what types of data can be extracted. More importantly, how this can be integrated with business applications. The manager sits at the intersection between the business needs and the technical capabilities.

Hopefully, by the time you finish this book, you will have learnt more about both aspects. The examples of existing applications using GIS data are a good grounding. The usage is expanding greatly, as in Google Maps, for example. Maybe you can also come up with a nifty usage. ... Read more

Workbook is a great to a class.
I have used the Hypo-City workbook in my Land Use and Growth Management course at the University of Virginia for several years. What I like about the workbook is that it is based on GIS layers and approaches plan making as a logical series of layered rounds reflected in eight exercises. These can be used selectively - I use four of them and actually use several texts rather than Urban Land Use Planning. Students/instructors can customize the exercises to emphasize particular issues or to partially replicate a real community. Students work in teams and welcome this applied addition to course readings and lectures. If you can afford only one book on photogrammetry calculations and procedures...
...get this one. And believe me you can probably only afford one modern text on the subject, they are all so expensive.

This book is quite good at explaining the calculations as well as the qualitative concepts of photogrammetry. It starts out explaining simple lenses and cameras, coordinate systems, the basic geometry of imaging, and continues through with calculations for stereo images. Even basic digital image processing is not neglected - nothing fancy mind you, but basic digital imaging kernels are discussed as well as histogram techniques for contrast enhancement, which is often a problem for aerial photographs. How to determine the meaning and locations of ground points is also discussed in the context of tilted photographs after a full discussion of this same subject involving vertical photographs - those taken where the camera is aimed at a 90 degree angle to the ground. There is nothing really complex about the math for any of this as long as you know the steps, and this book is all about teaching you the what and why of those computational steps. Detailed numerical examples are included as well as excellent explanations throughout.

In case you need to brush up on your math, the book contains an approximately 80 page long appendix with refreshers on least-squares methods, coordinate systems math, collinearity condition equations, and digital resampling. Unfortunately, there are no solutions or answers included to end of chapter problems. If you are lucky enough to have this book as a text in a class on this subject, hang on to it as a reference.

Elements of Photogrammetry
I bought this book for a class I was dreading and so far the book is my favorite part of this class. This book is written in a plain and understandable way. It has so far been a great tool for studying photgrametric principles.

Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource and covers all topics in a sufficient and easy to read manner and definitely covers all the "elements".Anyone that is interested in Photogrammetry will find this book quite useful.

Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry
This book is substantially revised from the previous edition in 1983, some 17 years ago. Consequently, new topics are added, particularly on GIS and digital photogrammetry. The appendixes on least squares adjustment, co-ordinate transformations, collinearity equations and digital resampling are particularly useful.

This book is clearly one of the best ones around in the area of photogrammetry. The chapters are properly organised and the concepts are explained clearly.

Of course, every book has to focus on its intent and target audience. The authors did this with flying colors. If there is anything missing in the current photogrammetric literature, it surely must be a book that reorganises the chapters into an operational book of case studies on photogrammetric practice.

The Most up to date and definitive book.
Sustainable Development is somewhat loosely defined as planning to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. In this book some forty four international experts share their expertise, experience and thoughts on using GIS to aid in their developmental planning.

Most of the book is on 'Learning from Practice.' These articles report on urban dynamics, natural and cultural heritage, society and environment, public participation, spacial data infratructure and public administration.

This type of book structure is necessary in emerging technologies, because the basic techniques are still being developed so quickly that the standardized techniques that would be typical of a textbook haven't stabilized. As such, this book represents the state of the art in the field as it exists today. The articles are, of course, somewhat uneven with some having more applicability to your particular needs than others.
