Product Description
Human induced global climate change is the biggest challenge humankind faces today. Increasing amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases play a crucial role in the evolution of the climate. Without the understanding of the contributing processes, feedbacks and interactions we cannot predict the future changes and develop effective mitigation strategies. To decrease the uncertainty of the global studies detailed regional studies are needed surveying the regional characteristics of the atmospheric greenhouse gas budget and the influencing factors. Atmospheric Greenhouse Gases: The Hungarian Perspective covers a coherent subset of the Hungarian climate change oriented research that is directly related to greenhouse gases. Topics discussed in the book range from the monitoring of the concentrations and fluxes of atmospheric greenhouse gases, through the modeling of atmosphere-biosphere interaction and greenhouse gas exchange processes, to the review of the anthropogenic contribution of Hungary to the greenhouse gas budget of the atmosphere. The studies call the attention to the regional properties which may modulate the European scale or global picture on the variation of atmospheric greenhouse gases. ... Read more

Product Description
NCGG4 is the fourth in a series of conferences devoted to the science and policy of greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide. This symposium was especially devoted to the implementation of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Kyoto Protocol entered into force on the 16th of February of 2005 after the ratification by 55 countries together responsible for 55% of the greenhouse gas emissions. The Fourth International Symposium on Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases (NCGG4) could not have been held more timely as many countries are more committed now to greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Science has drawn our attention recently to the fact that air pollution may have obscured the actual global warming by global dimming. Therefore during this conference the interactions between trace gases in the atmosphere and especially the ozone chemistry were discussed extensively. Further topics which were discussed to reduce emissions were: science, control, policy and implementation strategies.

Because of the wide attendance from different countries in the world the Symposium offered excellent opportunities to discuss policy and implementation issues within the different regions. It has now been widely recognised that the non-CO2 greenhouse gases offer exellent opportunities to contribute substantially to meeting national commitments at relatively low costs. ... Read more

Description:
In this paper, we addressed the utilization of photochemical method as an innovative technology for the destruction and removal of two potent greenhouse gases, SF"6 and SF"5CF"3. The destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the process was determined as a function of excitation wavelength, irradiation time, initial ratio of acetone to SF"5X (X represented F or CF"3), initial SF"5X concentration, additive oxygen and water vapor concentration. A complete removal was achieved by a radiation period of 55min and 120min for SF"6-CH"3COCH"3 system and SF"5CF"3-CH"3COCH"3 system respectively under 184.9nm irradiation. Extra addition of water vapor can enhance DRE by approximately 6% points in both systems. Further studies with GC/MS and FT-IR proved that no hazardous products such as S"2F"1"0, SO"2F"2, SOF"2, SOF"4 were generated in this process. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is arranged according to three themes and subdivided primarily into chapters which address the NCGGs methane, nitrous oxide and the fluorinated gases.
The first theme concerns new results on the sources and sinks of the NCGGs and their application in emission inventories. The second theme regards the progress in agricultural and technological options for control of emissions of NCGGs and the costs of such technologies. The third theme includes direct policy related issues such as the uncertainties in emission inventories and their verification, policy developments with respect to NCGGs, by national governments as well as in industry, and information on the economic aspects of emission control.
Subject areas of the proceedings: (non-CO2) greenhouse gases, climate change, Kyoto Protocol, emissions, control, policy. ... Read more

Excerpt: Until 2006, the United States was the largest emitter of carbon dioxide emissions. China has been the top emitter since 2006.. However both the emissions as a result of manufacturing exports and the emissions avoided by product imports are not considered. For instance, around 33% of China's emissions in 2005 were due to the production of exports rather than the result of their own consumption. While the former US Federal government (Bush Administration) opted against Kyoto type policies, the Obama Administration, various state, local, and regional governments have attempted some Kyoto Protocol goals on a local basis. For example, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), is a state-level emissions capping and trading program, which was founded on January 18, 2007 by eight Northeastern US states. The White House announced on 2009-11-25 that President Obama is offering a U.S. target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the range of 17% below 2005 levels by 2020. The U.S. State Department is offering a nation-level perspective by releasing the Fourth US Climate Action Report (USCAR) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, that includes measures to address climate change. The report shows that the country is on track to achieve President Bush's goal of reducing greenhouse gas intensity (the amount of GHG emissions per unit of gross domestic product) by 18 percent from 2002 to 2012. Over that same period, actual GHG emissions are projected to increase by 11 percent. The report estimates that in 2006, U.S. GHG emissions decreased 1.5 percent from 2005 to 7,075.6 teragrams of carbon dioxide equivalent. This represents an increase of 15.1 percent from the 1990 levels of 6146.7 teragrams (or 0.9 percent annual in... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11335844 ... Read more

Description:
Separation of slurry produces a solid fraction that is stored in manure heaps before being used as a fertiliser in crop production. Considerable amounts of ammonia (NH"3) and greenhouse gases may be emitted during storage, which has deleterious environmental effects. The emission levels can be expected to depend on oxygenation level inside the bulk of the stored manure and therefore on storage conditions. An experiment was thus set up to study gaseous emissions during storage of the solid fraction, and the effects of the oxygenation of manure heaps on emissions of NH"3 and various greenhouse gases. Emissions of NH"3 and the greenhouse gases methane (CH"4), nitrous oxide (N"2O), and carbon dioxide (CO"2) from an uncovered and covered heap of solids separated from pig slurry were compared, and related to the oxygenation level inside the manure heap. Approximately 15% of the initial nitrogen content was lost when separated solids were stored uncovered. Of the initial nitrogen content, 4.8% was lost as N"2O, 0.3% was lost as NH"3, while the 9.6% unaccounted for was assumed lost as dinitrogen (N"2). Of the initial carbon content, 28% was lost during uncovered storage; the majority of this was emitted as CO"2 (25%), while 1.3% was emitted as CH"4. Oxygenation level inside the heap was found to influence the production and emission of greenhouse gases. Covering the heap with an airtight material delayed aeration of the bulk of the stored manure, which reduced the internal heat production, degradation of organic matter, and emission of NH"3 and greenhouse gases. Emissions of NH"3", N"2O, and CH"4 were reduced by 12%, 99%, and 88%, respectively, when the manure heap was covered with an airtight material. ... Read more
