4-0 out of 5 stars As Good as Others
This book is a one for all kind of book, which is a good thing to have as a reference. The authors are mainly researchers, thus more theories than practical side explained. So, as a hydrogeologist , I also use other books by Todd, Bouwer, and Fetter at works.

I don't know why Dr. John A. Cherry does not include more on the groundwater contamination, as he is one of the "stars" on that field.

5-0 out of 5 stars classic groundwater textbook
I lost my original copy of this book about 10 years ago and decided that I could no longer function without it!It is probably the best written textbook that I have ever owned.Complex groundwater topics are described in a manner that can be easily understood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater
Overall a very good book. This is the text our Hydrogeology professor, Dr.J.Toth used in the 80's. It covers a great deal of information on facies, flow nets, hydrologic cycle, chemical evolution, groundwater resource evaluation, contamination, groundwater processes and a really good section on chemical principles and mass action. This is not a quantitative text, the discussions on finite difference and finite element methods include very little math. I would have also liked to have seen a better discussion of well hydraulics. I still turn to it for a reference as it is a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rigorous and quantitative basic reference
This is a good complement to "Groundwater Hydrology" by Todd. Freeze and Cherry is more detailed, rigorous, and quantitative than Todd, but it doesn't communicate the big picture quite as well. As well as anundergraduate textbook, this book is an essential resource for anyoneworking in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of groundwater
Despite the fact that this book was written almost twenty years ago, it is still considered the definitive work on groundwater geology. A must-have for hydrogeologists and groundwater engineers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for hydrogeologists!
This is a great book for students and professionals alike.Starts with the very basics of water chemistry and covers almost everything that one could think of.What sets this book apart from other chemical hydrogeology books is the extensive integration of PHREQC and the many links to free useful applications and graphing tools.I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good effort but needs help.
If you're looking for a helpful perspective on statistical methodologies related to "groundwater detection monitoring," this book is a good place to start.

The book contains much valuable information for properly implementing detection monitoring plans. However, extracting this information requires much effort. The book appears to be multiple publications cobbled together. Thus, consistency between each chapter/section is poor. This, plus some misprints, made the understanding of the subjects presented more time consuming than should have been necessary.

I little editing and this material would be of great value to environmental professionals involved with this complex topic. ... Read more

Product Description
This rigorous and comprehensive text provides fundamental information geared to students in either engineering or natural sciences courses dealing with groundwater, including subsurface fluid flow, subsurface contamination, and pollutant transport. Charbeneau views the application of groundwater hydraulics and pollutant transport as a quantitative field. Although quantitative methods are exact, the fields of study are usually homogeneous; laboratory and field methods provide estimates for ideal (not real) fields. What impact does the use of ideal fields have on model predictions? The unknown answer places the study of subsurface flow of water and chemical mass transport in a prime position for continued research—and this readily accessible text opens the door to that research. Outstanding features include: 1) comprehensive, rigorous, and highly accessible coverage that includes information on groundwater flow, well hydraulics, field methods for parameter estimation, hydrologic relationships between surface water and groundwater hydrology, mass transport of contaminants by advection, diffusion and dispersion, and special problems posed by nonaqueous phase liquids (oils); 2) strong focus on applications that empowers readers with knowledge and methodologies that they can use in real, day-to-day practices; 3) integrates 66 worked examples and 178 problems; 4) examines standard software being used in the industry today to expose the reader to the USGS MODFLOW model (the most widely used numerical simulation model for groundwater flow) and the USGS MOC3D. ... Product Description

This book provides an introduction to the scientific fundamentals of groundwater and geothermal systems. In a simple and didactic manner the different water and energy problems existing in deformable porous rocks are explained as well as the corresponding theories and the mathematical and numerical tools that lead to modeling and solving them. This approach provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the basic physical laws of thermoporoelastic rocks, the partial differential equations representing these laws and the principal numerical methods, which allow finding approximate solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. The book also presents the form in which specific useful models can be generated and solved. The text is introductory in the sense that it explains basic themes of the systems mentioned in three areas: engineering, physics and mathematics. All the laws and equations introduced in this book are formulated carefully based on fundamental physical principles. This way, the reader will understand the key importance of mathematics applied to all the subjects. Simple models are emphasized and solved with numerous examples. For more sophisticated and advanced models the numerical techniques are described and developed carefully.
This book will serve as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of fluid, solute and heat transport, applicable to all types of subsurface systems, ranging from shallow aquifers down to deep geothermal reservoirs.
The book will prove to be a useful textbook to senior undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, professional geologists and geophysicists, engineers, mathematicians and others working in the vital areas of groundwater and geothermal resources.

Product Description

In many parts of the world, groundwater resources are under increasing threat from growing demands, wasteful use, and contamination. To face the challenge, good planning and management practices are needed. A key to the management of groundwater is the ability to model the movement of fluids and contaminants in the subsurface. The purpose of this book is to construct conceptual and mathematical models that can provide the information required for making decisions associated with the management of groundwater resources, and the remediation of contaminated aquifers.

The basic approach of this book is to accurately describe the underlying physics of groundwater flow and solute transport in heterogeneous porous media, starting at the microscopic level, and to rigorously derive their mathematical representation at the macroscopic levels. The well-posed, macroscopic mathematical models are formulated for saturated, single phase flow, as well as for unsaturated and multiphase flow, and for the transport of single and multiple chemical species. Numerical models are presented and computer codes are reviewed, as tools for solving the models. The problem of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers is examined and modeled. The issues of uncertainty in model input data and output are addressed. The book concludes with a chapter on the management of groundwater resources. Although one of the main objectives of this book is to construct mathematical models, the amount of mathematics required is kept minimal.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book on analytic methods in groundwater
This book is probably one of the best and most thorough books on analytic methods in groundwater (as opposed to finite-element and -difference methods). It is probably the most recent too, since most books on this subject date from the 60's or 70's.

It is the authoritative source on the Analytic Element Method (AEM), which is the basis of the EPA wellhead protection model, among other things.

This book covers the most basic concepts in groundwater through the use of conformal mapping and AEM, it is pretty comprehensive. Analytic solutions for the basics steady-state problems in 2D (wells, uniform flow, etc.), and also more complex topics, like inhomogenieties in permeability (clay lenses) and interface (seawater intrusion) problems. This book is required reading if you want to understand the AEM method, or analytic methods in groundwater in general.

Product Description

During the past three decades, urban groundwater has emerged as one of the world’s most pressing issues. Explosive population growth, most prevalent in cities, has placed an inordinate demand on groundwater supply, prompting concerns for its long-term sustainability at a time when the quality of available groundwater resources is being increasingly degraded by anthropogenic activity. Cities less reliant on groundwater for potable supply are equally obliged to manage subsurface water with cautious respect since rising groundwater levels can generate a myriad of problems such as unstable land slopes, flooded basements, tunnels and electrical utilities, and the release of polluted water to urban wetlands, springs and streams.

Challenges in Urban Groundwater is premised on a growing recognition that most urban groundwater problems are not uniquely associated with any particular region or hydrogeological environment, and much can be learned by understanding the successes and failures of others. It showcases the best urban groundwater papers presented at the International Geological Congress held in Florence, Italy in 2004, and is supplemented by contributions solicited from other world experts active in urban groundwater research. Topics covered range from the urban water balance and rising groundwater levels to groundwater contamination and the role of aquifer modelling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Freeze and Cherry but still a good intro text.
This is a good intro text to groundwater science or hydrogeology for upper level undergrads or entry level grad students. It will also serve as a great companion text to Freeze and Cherry's classic text.I actually like this text better than the Schwartz and Zhang text which is becoming THE text for intro hydrogeology courses across America. That in itself says alot.I think this text would benefit greatly with a second edition in which the author "fleshes out" some of the concepts. He should also include more derivations from the fluid dynamics perspective.I think this will benefit students who are advancing beyond this course into fluvial hydrology, surface hydrology, or contaminant transport. From what I've been told the author has been very open to suggestions by other professors.I can't verify this however. All in all this is a really good, readable, clear, concise text for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Freeze n' Cherry
I and many others have been falsely pertuating the myth that Freeze and Cherry is THE coursebook for serious hydrogeologists. Well, the time has come to debunk that myth. After you pick up a copy of Charlie Fitts text, Groundwater Science, "mirror, mirror on the wall will reveal who has the best groundwater science text of all, and it ain't FnC."

For those non-risk takers out there, just browse on over to the publisher's companion website and read the first chapter and the first couple of pages of all the book for yourself. While you are there you see published reviews of this book and a whole lot of stuff to make instructors happy, like 100 book illustrations on powerpoint and the complete solutions manual. Of course, these are ONLY for instructors and students aren't savvy enuf to find them by themselves. If you don't think this is THE Best textbook on GW Science, go ahead and do your own review. And by the way, it is a lot cheaper than anything else out there, so you can feel good about keeping some $ in your students' pockets. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Sustainable management of water resources is quickly increasing in importance on a global scale. An important piece of the puzzle is the characterization of marine water and determining its importance to geochemical budgets. To do this, submarine groundwater discharges must be carefully studied. Comprehensively exploring the subject, Submarine Groundwater presents quantitative data relating groundwater contribution to the water/salt balance of regional and global bodies of water.

The authors examine different data-supported methods for studying submarine groundwater flow and discharge through case studies contributed by leading international scientists. They discuss the maintenance of optimal water, salt, temperature and hydrobiological regimes of inland seas and large lakes. The book covers subsurface water exchange between the land and sea as well as groundwater discharge to the seas. It also provides a review of experimental methods and numerical modeling that can be used for the evaluation of specific discharge data and the effect of groundwater on the salt balance of seas and oceans.

Defining the field of marine hydrogeology as a science that studies submarine groundwater, its properties, circulation, and distribution, Submarine Groundwater delineates the role of quantitative assessment of subsurface water exchange between land and sea in predicting its changes under the influence of natural factors and human activity. It provides a framework for assessing different methods and making the best choice for various situations. ... Read more
