5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition is up-to-date
The reviews written in 2000 and 2001 referred to the 2nd edition. The 3rd edition, published in 2004, is now up-to-date.
The 3rd edition includes information on modern groundwater modeling methods (including the Modflow model), more coverage of chemical contamination in groundwater, and includes both U.S. and SI units in the examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater Hydrology
This is a really good book covering a lot of the basics of groundwater hydrology. It covers occurrence, movement, well hydraulics, water wells, environmental influences, quality, and pollution, modeling subsurface investigations.A little outdated but can be used as a great complement to other more recent publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Basic Reference
In spite of its age, this book continues to be an essential basicreference on the subject.Well organized and clearly written, the authorsstated goal was "to present the fundamentals of groundwater hydrologyin a manner understandable to [a wide variety of students andprofessionals]."If I were suddenly called to work in a foreigncountry and could only take one book, this would be the one.A slightdrawback is the use of metric units throughout, perhaps because the bookwas expected to be translated into a number of foreign languages. This isthe completely rewritten second edition of the original edition publishedin 1959.The first edition of this book was probably the first fundamentaltextbook on the subject.Basic information or equations that are not inTodd, usually can be found in "Groundwater" by Freeze and Cherry(John Cherry was a student of Todd's). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 1st class content - very bad print
This book is probably the best ever written on the subject. In other words, the content is really 1st class.
However, the print quality is so poor that I wonder how Anderson and Woessner or their 'managers' did ever even think about letting Elsevier do the print. It looks like something that come out of a fax machine. The figures are difficult to read. Grey-scales in figures have turned into slightly different tones of just black, and sometimes you need the Academic Press print of 1992 to fully understand the figures. The layout of tables that run over two or more pages have been altered to become inlogic compared to the Academic Press print version. Also the letters of the bulk text lacks reader friendliness. My advise is to look for the book printed by academic press and not by Elsevier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but the cover fell off due to poor binding
A great book for explaining the essentials of groundwater modeling including governing equations and statistical evaluation of numeric modeling. I just wish the publisher could produce a book that the coverdidn't fall off within the first couple months of use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great content but poor binding
This text was used in my groundwater modeling class and was useful and instructive specifically for GMS and MODFLOW.The binding split after normal use during the quarter to almost every student enrolled in thecourse.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great preview of modeling methodology
This text outlines the basic principles and problems faced by younggroundwater modelers. The comprehensive interpretation of commonchallenges are handled with reference to real case studies.Basicsteady-state groundwater modeling is supplimented with transient examples. It is a great text for any groundwater modeling class at the undergraduateor graduate level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater
Overall a very good book. This is the text our Hydrogeology professor, Dr.J.Toth used in the 80's. It covers a great deal of information on facies, flow nets, hydrologic cycle, chemical evolution, groundwater resource evaluation, contamination, groundwater processes and a really good section on chemical principles and mass action. This is not a quantitative text, the discussions on finite difference and finite element methods include very little math. I would have also liked to have seen a better discussion of well hydraulics. I still turn to it for a reference as it is a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rigorous and quantitative basic reference
This is a good complement to "Groundwater Hydrology" by Todd. Freeze and Cherry is more detailed, rigorous, and quantitative than Todd, but it doesn't communicate the big picture quite as well. As well as anundergraduate textbook, this book is an essential resource for anyoneworking in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of groundwater
Despite the fact that this book was written almost twenty years ago, it is still considered the definitive work on groundwater geology. A must-have for hydrogeologists and groundwater engineers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendious Discussion of Groundwater Development
The author does a great job discussing aquifer properties, the hydrologic cycle, movement of groundwater, exploration, well hydraulics etc..The book presents information on transmissivity, well yield, storage, time-drawdown, and distance draw-down graphs for confined and unconfined conditions and how to use them. Also the sections on different drilling methods, well design and development I have found useful.Graphs, charts, and pictures are in color which is a nice change from black and white.I would recommend this book to any pofessional interested in groundwater exploration and movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book captured me on page one and never let me go!
I opened the book just before I went to bed thinking I'd read just a few pages. I didn't close it until mid-morning and I hated reaching the end. I longed for another book to keep up with Claire's adventures.

Claire Hanover could be the woman next door. Middle aged, recently empty nested and in the process of having her marriage grow distant so it can hopefully grow closer. Then her husband is caught with the gun in his hand. She knows he didn't do it, but who did? Claire's world is upside down. She is so believable you want to invite her in for coffee and comfort. The story is all hers, her vulnerability is so touching, it's almost heartrending. Through the story she grows, toughens up, changes in ways she never thought possible and manages to keep her core values. The ending is a shocker, one I never saw coming despite the well placed clues. Can't wait for more from this writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery Read With a Terrific Ending
Those of us who live and work in beautiful Colorado Springs know that
violence and crime abound in a few unsavory, local neighborhoods. But
in A Real Basket Case, even the affluent Broadmoor and foothills residents
aren't immune to danger, kidnapping, drugs and murder.

When a sexy, Latin aerobics instructor/massage therapist/gigolo is killed in Claire Hanover's bedroom, the once bored, unfulfilled, gift basket maker must become an amateur sleuth to clear her husband of the murder charges.

Love, loyalty and latent inner strength propel Claire through a clever investigation. She holds her own in confrontations with a hostile detective, jealous women, drug addicts, drug dealers and friends who may be enemies in disguise. Aided by her inherent honesty and tenacity, she solves the crime.

Clues snake through this satisfying story like a well-woven basket. All in all, Beth Groundwater has provided a terrific read for both new and veteran mystery aficionados to savor.

P.S.
The ending is really, really good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meet a new sleuth that could be your friend !
A housewife not feeling appreciated, a part time gift basket maker, an amauter sleuth trying to prove her husband's innocence, an acquaintance of a drug dealer. Believable? Well, maybe. But the writing is crisp, the story flows smoothly, scene descriptions are clear, a bit of humor, and I was never sure 'who did it' until the final chapter.
Thanks for introducing a new character with lots of potential for future escapades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Mystery
Beth Groundwater's A Real Basket Case combines a good mystery with a stong relationship story. Claire Hanover must solve the murder when her husband is accused of the crime, while trying to patch up her marriage. The novel contains strong characters with a mystery that keeps you guessing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great new cozy mystery series
Claire Hanover is feeling lonely. Her Colorado Springs gift basket business is enough to fulfill her.Her husband is working night and day and ignoring her.Her friend Ellen, who has been bitter since her divorce, gets her to join her exercise class. When their handsome aerobics instructor, Enrique, shows interest in Claire, Ellen urges her to have a fling.Claire agrees to a massage. What she didn't realize was that it would in her bedroom!Just when the massage was about to start, Enrique is shot and Roger, Claire's husband, is in the doorway with the gun.

At first Claire isn't positive Roger is innocent, but soon realizes he's being framed. The police are happy they've got their man, so she sets out to prove his innocence. She finds herself with many unsavory people in the course of her investigation, especially the drug dealers. Then there are the many gym ladies he supplied with cocaine or seduced for money. Can Claire sort out the suspects and find the killer before the killer finds her?

I really enjoyed this book.I can't wait to read the next!Claire is such a fun character. The story kept my interest at every turn.It did have some situations where I found myself saying, no way would I do that.I felt a normal person would have called the police, but Claire persevered and won me over!I hope the author writes fast!

I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Freeze and Cherry but still a good intro text.
This is a good intro text to groundwater science or hydrogeology for upper level undergrads or entry level grad students. It will also serve as a great companion text to Freeze and Cherry's classic text.I actually like this text better than the Schwartz and Zhang text which is becoming THE text for intro hydrogeology courses across America. That in itself says alot.I think this text would benefit greatly with a second edition in which the author "fleshes out" some of the concepts. He should also include more derivations from the fluid dynamics perspective.I think this will benefit students who are advancing beyond this course into fluvial hydrology, surface hydrology, or contaminant transport. From what I've been told the author has been very open to suggestions by other professors.I can't verify this however. All in all this is a really good, readable, clear, concise text for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Freeze n' Cherry
I and many others have been falsely pertuating the myth that Freeze and Cherry is THE coursebook for serious hydrogeologists. Well, the time has come to debunk that myth. After you pick up a copy of Charlie Fitts text, Groundwater Science, "mirror, mirror on the wall will reveal who has the best groundwater science text of all, and it ain't FnC."

For those non-risk takers out there, just browse on over to the publisher's companion website and read the first chapter and the first couple of pages of all the book for yourself. While you are there you see published reviews of this book and a whole lot of stuff to make instructors happy, like 100 book illustrations on powerpoint and the complete solutions manual. Of course, these are ONLY for instructors and students aren't savvy enuf to find them by themselves. If you don't think this is THE Best textbook on GW Science, go ahead and do your own review. And by the way, it is a lot cheaper than anything else out there, so you can feel good about keeping some $ in your students' pockets. ... Read more

Book Description
Methods and guidelines for developing and using mathematical models

Turn to Effective Groundwater Model Calibration for a set of methods and guidelines that can help produce more accurate and transparent mathematical models. The models can represent groundwater flow and transport and other natural and engineered systems. Use this book and its extensive exercises to learn methods to fully exploit the data on hand, maximize the model's potential, and troubleshoot any problems that arise. Use the methods to perform:

  • Sensitivity analysis to evaluate the information content of data
  • Data assessment to identify (a) existing measurements that dominate model development and predictions and (b) potential measurements likely to improve the reliability of predictions
  • Calibration to develop models that are consistent with the data in an optimal manner
  • Uncertainty evaluation to quantify and communicate errors in simulated results that are often used to make important societal decisions

Most of the methods are based on linear and nonlinear regression theory.

Fourteen guidelines show the reader how to use the methods advantageously in practical situations.

Exercises focus on a groundwater flow system and management problem, enabling readers to apply all the methods presented in the text. The exercises can be completed using the material provided in the book, or as hands-on computer exercises using instructions and files available on the text's accompanying Web site.

Throughout the book, the authors stress the need for valid statistical concepts and easily understood presentation methods required to achieve well-tested, transparent models. Most of the examples and all of the exercises focus on simulating groundwater systems; other examples come from surface-water hydrology and geophysics.

The methods and guidelines in the text are broadly applicable and can be used by students, researchers, and engineers to simulate many kinds systems. ... Read more

Book Description
Groundwater is a vital source of water throughout the world. As the number of groundwater investigations increase, it is important to understand how to develop comprehensive quantified conceptual models and appreciate the basis of analytical solutions or numerical methods of modelling groundwater flow.
Groundwater Hydrology: Conceptual and Computational Models describes advances in both conceptual and numerical modelling. It gives insights into the interpretation of field information, the development of conceptual models, the use of computational models based on analytical and numerical techniques, the assessment of the adequacy of models, and the use of computational models for predictive purposes. It focuses on the study of groundwater flow problems and a thorough analysis of real practical field case studies.
It is divided into three parts:
* Part I deals with the basic principles, including a summary of mathematical descriptions of groundwater flow, recharge estimation using soil moisture balance techniques, and extensive studies of groundwater-surface water interactions.
* Part II focuses on the concepts and methods of analysis for radial flow to boreholes including topics such as large diameter wells, multi-layered aquifer systems, aquitard storage and the prediction of long-term yield.
* Part III examines regional groundwater flow including situations when vertical flows are important or transmissivities change with saturated depth.
Suitable for practising engineers, hydrogeologists, researchers in groundwater and irrigation, mathematical modellers, groundwater scientists, and water resource specialists. Appropriate for upper level undergraduates and MSc students in Departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Earth Science and Physical Geography. It would also be useful for hydrologists, civil engineers, physical geographers, agricultural engineers, consultancy firms involved in water resource projects, and overseas development workers.Download Description
