5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition of the Classic Reference by Driscoll
This is the latest edition of the authoritative hydrogeology text Groundwater and Wells. The previous edition (2nd), edited by Fletcher Driscoll, was published in 1986 and went through numerous printings. This 3rd edition, edited by Robert Sterrett, is not simply a minor revision - it includes significant new material about borehole geophysical techniques, water treatment, pump test analysis, and more. Oddly though, it has fewer pages than the 2nd edition, going from over 1000 pages in the 2nd edition to 812 pages in this edition. I wish I still had my 2nd edition to make a direct comparison to determine what material was cut out. I think it is well worth the money to get the new edition for the updated information - a lot has happened in the groundwater industry in 20 years. This edition also includes a DVD with the Johnson Drillers Journals dating from 1929 to 1984.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Groundwater Modeling
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR.Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.

This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and of little value
I found this book somewhat outdated.Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition,it contains very good example problems. ... Read more

Product Description
Methods and guidelines for developing and using mathematical models

Turn to Effective Groundwater Model Calibration for a set of methods and guidelines that can help produce more accurate and transparent mathematical models. The models can represent groundwater flow and transport and other natural and engineered systems. Use this book and its extensive exercises to learn methods to fully exploit the data on hand, maximize the model's potential, and troubleshoot any problems that arise. Use the methods to perform:

  • Sensitivity analysis to evaluate the information content of data
  • Data assessment to identify (a) existing measurements that dominate model development and predictions and (b) potential measurements likely to improve the reliability of predictions
  • Calibration to develop models that are consistent with the data in an optimal manner
  • Uncertainty evaluation to quantify and communicate errors in simulated results that are often used to make important societal decisions

Most of the methods are based on linear and nonlinear regression theory.

Fourteen guidelines show the reader how to use the methods advantageously in practical situations.

Exercises focus on a groundwater flow system and management problem, enabling readers to apply all the methods presented in the text. The exercises can be completed using the material provided in the book, or as hands-on computer exercises using instructions and files available on the text's accompanying Web site.

Throughout the book, the authors stress the need for valid statistical concepts and easily understood presentation methods required to achieve well-tested, transparent models. Most of the examples and all of the exercises focus on simulating groundwater systems; other examples come from surface-water hydrology and geophysics.

The methods and guidelines in the text are broadly applicable and can be used by students, researchers, and engineers to simulate many kinds systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This is THE definitive reference to have if you are interested at all in leaning how to apply inverse methods to groundwater modeling. In fact the tools and techniques used in this book may be applied to modelling in many disciplines, not just groundwater modeling.
The fundamental topics of this book include information of the methods of inverse analysis: sensitivity analysis, data assessment strategies, calibration techniques, and uncertainty evaluation. This revolves around the "fourteen guidelines" (a copy of which I have hanging in my office); all are practical in nature. There are also suggestions for effectively communicating the calibration results in a statistically robust, quantitative manner (a particular pet peeve of mine).
Additional resources are provided including exercises, answers, software, and PowerPoint files available through a companion website. As such, this book is useful in an academic setting. However, professionals should add this book to their library as well. Plan on referring to it frequently.

3-0 out of 5 stars Focus is on applying numerical codes
What I like about this book is the breadth it provides on the art and philosophy of groundwater modelling. It is really about the practice of applying existing codes, there is very little detail about the theory behind the codes. There are numerous examples mostly using FDM (MODFLOW, PLASM) and occasionally FEM codes (AQUIFEM-1), and lots of discussion on things to keep in mind. There are whole chapters on (1) boundary conditions (2) transient models and (3) conceptual models which I thought was great. There is a useful discussion on water balance too. There is very little however on unsaturated flow or solute transport, both of which get only a few pages in the last chapter.

3-0 out of 5 stars 1st class content - very bad print
This book is probably the best ever written on the subject. In other words, the content is really 1st class.
However, the print quality is so poor that I wonder how Anderson and Woessner or their 'managers' did ever even think about letting Elsevier do the print. It looks like something that come out of a fax machine. The figures are difficult to read. Grey-scales in figures have turned into slightly different tones of just black, and sometimes you need the Academic Press print of 1992 to fully understand the figures. The layout of tables that run over two or more pages have been altered to become inlogic compared to the Academic Press print version. Also the letters of the bulk text lacks reader friendliness. My advise is to look for the book printed by academic press and not by Elsevier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but the cover fell off due to poor binding
A great book for explaining the essentials of groundwater modeling including governing equations and statistical evaluation of numeric modeling. I just wish the publisher could produce a book that the coverdidn't fall off within the first couple months of use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great content but poor binding
This text was used in my groundwater modeling class and was useful and instructive specifically for GMS and MODFLOW.The binding split after normal use during the quarter to almost every student enrolled in thecourse.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great preview of modeling methodology
This text outlines the basic principles and problems faced by younggroundwater modelers. The comprehensive interpretation of commonchallenges are handled with reference to real case studies.Basicsteady-state groundwater modeling is supplimented with transient examples. Product Description
Groundwater is a vital source of water throughout the world. As the number of groundwater investigations increase, it is important to understand how to develop comprehensive quantified conceptual models and appreciate the basis of analytical solutions or numerical methods of modelling groundwater flow.

Groundwater Hydrology: Conceptual and Computational Models describes advances in both conceptual and numerical modelling. It gives insights into the interpretation of field information, the development of conceptual models, the use of computational models based on analytical and numerical techniques, the assessment of the adequacy of models, and the use of computational models for predictive purposes. It focuses on the study of groundwater flow problems and a thorough analysis of real practical field case studies.

It is divided into three parts:

  • Part I deals with the basic principles, including a summary of mathematical descriptions of groundwater flow, recharge estimation using soil moisture balance techniques, and extensive studies of groundwater-surface water interactions.
  • Part II focuses on the concepts and methods of analysis for radial flow to boreholes including topics such as large diameter wells, multi-layered aquifer systems, aquitard storage and the prediction of long-term yield.
  • Part III examines regional groundwater flow including situations when vertical flows are important or transmissivities change with saturated depth.

Suitable for practising engineers, hydrogeologists, researchers in groundwater and irrigation, mathematical modellers, groundwater scientists, and water resource specialists. Appropriate for upper level undergraduates and MSc students in Departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Earth Science and Physical Geography. It would also be useful for hydrologists, civil engineers, physical geographers, agricultural engineers, consultancy firms involved in water resource projects, and overseas development workers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good text to introduce groundwater hydraulics
This is a very good text to introduce groundwater hydraulics. The book start by the basic definitions, goes to Darcy's law and then guides the reader through the derivations of the different equations that govern thegroundwater hydraulics. The book also provide very useful examples on howto apply these equations. The book is written in a tight readable stylethat makes it easy to follow both the logic and the math.I think that thestrength of the book lies in its many clear and well presented examples which in conjuction with the many useful exercises it contains, makes itvery useful to senior and graduate students. This book is NOT for thosewho are interested in the practice of groundwater, but rather the theory ofgroundwater hydraulics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Freshwater Misuse

5-0 out of 5 stars Water
This is the second book I read from this author. He does a good job writing about the nation's water supply and some of its history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book about an alarming problem
This book discusses several places in America where we are depleting the groundwater at an unsustainable rate. The author gives the history of the areas and of groundwater pumping in general, then goes on to explain the science behind the pumping that makes it such a problem for long-term access to drinkable water.

One of the things I really liked about this book is the author's discussion of bottled water, the sources for the water, and the effects on the areas that allow water extraction by the bottling companies. It was really enlightening. He also discusses desalination and its high costs.

This author of this book does a good job describing both the political issues behind groundwater pumping and the long-term ecological damage we are causing because of it. If you are interested in water issues, it is a must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Water Follies
Water Follies (Robert Glennon, 2002) is an amusingly written book about a serious problem in America: namely, groundwater pumping and its effect on various surface water sources. Glennon takes his reader on a tour of the country stopping at various sites of groundwater overuse. He meticulously describes the state of affairs in sites ranging in scenario and geographical location from wetlands around Tampa Bay, to Salmon spawning grounds in eastern Maine, to the increasingly taxed area of Grand Canyon National Park. The tour makes eleven stops in total each one with its own unique spin on the overall water predicament in this country. Yet the book is not without its bright spots. Glennon writes with a playful sense of humor and his sometimes bitterly sarcastic view of the state of affairs regarding America's freshwaters does not leave the reader without hope for the future. Rather, Glennon is sure to end his discussion with eight clear and distinct steps for lawmakers and citizens alike toward righting the wrongs he sees in our current water usage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fate of America's Water
I like Mr. Glennon's book very much but I did think the writing style was just a little dry.I understand the theory behind"the Tragedy of Law and the Commons," but I think at some point in the future population growth will outstrip our ability to take care of our water needs regardless of laws or rights or where the water is located.I think most of the world is being fooled.Every one seems to be thinking oil and the price of gasoline at the pump.Water and not having it is the world's biggest problem. Some research I've read suggest that the population of the United States could grow as much as another 100 million by 2043.Where are we going to get all of the water for them? This book and others about water are an important subject for any family man concerned about his family and the future.Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Well Written Mystery
Beth Groundwater's debut novel is tightly written with well rounded, fully believable characters. One of the things about cozies is they are usually about amateur detectives who are drawn by circumstances into solving a mystery.

In this case, Claire Hanover has a real doozie thrown at her. While in the middle of a home massage someone enters her home and shoots the man attending to her. Understandably terrified and in shock, a screaming Claire soon finds her husband rushing to the room carrying the gun. Of course the police think they have their man.

Claire, however, is just as certain they do not and sets out to prove her husband's innocence. Not only is Claire trying to prove her husband is not guilty of murder, she is also trying to convince him that the massage was not a prelude to an affair.

Set in Colorado Springs it was fun for me to watch Claire swallow her fears as she confronts the detective, meets with a drug lord and interviews scurrilous suspects all in an effort to free her husband. Which brings me to another aspect of the book I liked.Groundwater doesn't have her heroine jump into her investigation lightly. It was hard for her and she had to screw up her courage in order to accomplish some of the things she did, which added a greater level of believability to the story. As an author of my own cozy mystery I found myself admiring how the character of Claire shared with the reader as she uncovered clues instead of keeping us in the dark until the last page.

What a fun book. Well written, A REAL BASKET CASE is good mystery and filled with characters I'm hoping show up in the second book (I have yet to read it). I would absolutely recommend reading this book. And if you happen to live in Colorado Springs, as I do, you'll find plenty of familiar landmarks that will add to your enjoyment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gelati's Scoop
Good day to all. Today's the first post of out "Facebook/Goodreads Writer Friends" or in the case of Beth " Goodreads /Facebook" friends, which ever you prefer. Both are nice places to make new friends. Please take Giovanni with a grain of salt. Moving on, I was raised with one of the core values our family had of supporting one another; family and friends. Although Beth and I are separated by a few time zones we have had many nice conversations and exchanges. Who better to start this new posting segment off? She has some nice words in an interview we did, I have included that below my thoughts on her book.
I got a hold of "A Real Basket case" and initially had some trepidation. One, trepidation is a big word for me and I had to ask my wife what it meant. Two, being a guy and secure in my manhood, did I really want to read a book whose central character made basket arrangements? I enjoy female heroines, I thought, so let's give it the old college try. To my surprise and delight I got a groove on this very early and enjoyed the characters as well as her easy going writing style. The pace was quick; it keep me turning the pages and was an excellent read. I am passing the book around to share with my wife and seven daughters. My teenage son might be a tough one; I got him to look at the Burn Notice book I posted on earlier in the week. We watch the show together. Beth Groundwater has a very clever debut novel here. The heroine, Claire Hanover, is a keeper that you are going to be going to want more of. Pick it up; it has a fast pace, great characters and a good ending. I had the opportunity to talk with Beth Groundwater; here is what she had to say.
"In the future, I'll be juggling two mystery series, the Claire Hanover Gift Basket Designer Series and my new Rocky Mountain Adventure Series Whitewater River Ranger. Mandy Tanner, who is single and in her 20's and lives in Salida,CO. She is very different from Claire who is in her 40's, married and lives in Colorado Springs. The first book in the new series ,"Deadly Currents", will be released March 2010. Many of my readers assume that I, like Claire, have a gift basket business, but my business is writing books. I construct gift baskets for friends and relatives for fun, but not for sale. And, while I enjoy whitewater rafting, I'm no expert at that either, as Mandy is. I rely on experts in the occupations I write about and their advice to make realistic and factual."
That's it for today. Check it out - A Real Basket Case. What are you reading today? Don't be shy; visit us on Facebook, Goodreads, Linkedin, Twitter and Blog Catalog

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Basket Case To Whom You Can Relate
Beth Groundwater introduces Claire Hanover, restless and underappreciated housewife, gift basket maker, and reluctant sleuth, in A Real Basket Case.Hanover's gullibility drives her to make decisions that put her in danger and sometimes manages to save her.Her devotion to her husband and her motivation of saving her marriage are entirely believable and engaging in Groundwater's capable hands.Groundwater writes all her characters with dimensions that show frailty, generosity, and the basic "humanness" shared by humankind.Readers will cheer for Hanover to succeed and commiserate with her failures.A Real Basket Case is the first in a series that promises to entertain readers who enjoy a lighthearted, engaging mystery for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book that could've been written just for me
A Real Basket Case by Beth Groundwater is a really fun book, and just perfect to add to that gift basket for mother, sick friend, empty-nester, or whoever else you feel needs a bit of spice to cheer them up. Just be sure whoever reads it will be inspired to believe in themselves, in the future, and in the value of love and relationships.

Beth's protagonist, Claire Hanover, is a middle-aged mother of grown-up children, valued confidante of friends whose marriages are breaking up, and loyal wife. But an exercise class run by gloriously handsome Enrique surely can't be a problem, and all she agrees to is a massage. Depending on your own position in life, you'll either be crying out "Go for it Claire," or "Claire, don't do it!" as one of her friends eggs her on, and the other decries the duplicity of all men.

But things go drastically wrong. Claire's moment of pleasure becomes a trek through the seamy underbelly of Colorado Springs. Her husband is arrested for murder. Everyone thinks he's guilty. His boss threatens to fire him. And when Claire manages to arrange his bail, he retires straight to a friend's house because he doesn't believe she loves him anymore.

By the way, did you know that works? Arranging bail and all that?

Meanwhile Claire delivers gift baskets to the realtor, and tries to avoid getting shot by the local drug lord. She'd have every justification for ending up a real basket case, but that's not her aim, and true love, true grit, and true determination win through.

I love Claire. I love this story. And I'll soon be reading the sequel, To Hell in a Handbasket. I can hardly wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding debut
From the moment I opened this book I couldn't put it down. Claire Hanover, the story's spunky and resourceful heroine, enticed me into her world and held me there, captive, until the very satisfying end. Full of sharp twists and unexpected turns, A Real Basket Case had me guessing all the way. I can't wait to read the next book in this thrilling series. ... Read more

Product Description
Tremendous improvements in ground-water sampling methodologies and analytical technologies have made it possible to collect and analyze truly representative samples to detect increasingly lower levels of contaminants—now in the sub-parts-per-billion range. Though these new methods produce more accurate and precise data and are less expensive, many companies and government agencies are reluctant to update their sampling protocols and regulations claiming the transition would be too costly.

The Essential Handbook of Ground-Water Sampling clearly details the economic and scientific case for adopting these new methodologies. Citing examples of unnecessary expenditure due to the inaccuracy of out-dated techniques, the editors point out that the expense of making incorrect decisions based on poor quality samples clearly negates any savings that might be realized by using older, more inefficient, and effectively short-sighted, methods. Using numerous figures, tables, and references to recent research, the editors explain the efficiency of utilizing newer, more accurate, techniques that produce higher quality data. The text provides a detailed discussion of every aspect of ground-water sampling from the development of a sampling and analysis plan, through sample collection, pretreatment, handling, shipping, and analysis, to the documentation, interpretation, and presentation of ground-water quality data.

Successful sampling events and accurate data provide a sound foundation for making important, potentially expensive decisions regarding site monitoring, risk assessment, remediation, and closure. Armed with the information presented in this handbook, environmental professionals will be able to make sound technological and economic decisions regarding the choice of sampling equipment, methodologies, and procedures to meet their site-specific objectives and ensure the success of their ground-water sampling programs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I've been working with Phreeqc software for the past years, and this book helps you to understand in an easy-way, the basics of this software. After the review of the chapters, you can go directly to a set of examples that can teach you how-and-what Phreeqc software can do for you. Despite the fact that I found some errors in this book (typing errors and analitical results), this book could be a very good guide that should be in your desk for further questions with Phreeqc. ... Product Description
Published in 1991, the first edition of The Practical Handbook of Ground-Water Monitoring quickly became the gold standard reference on the topic of ground-water monitoring. But, as in all rapidly evolving fields, regulations change, technology advances, methods improve, and research reveals flaws in prior thinking. As a consequence, books that document the state of the science, even widely acknowledged definitive works, become outdated and need to be rewritten periodically to stay current. Reflecting this and renamed to highlight its wider scope, The Practical Handbook of Environmental Site Characterization and Ground-Water Monitoring, Second Edition provides an updated look at the field. Completely revised, the book contains so much new information that it has doubled in size.

Containing the most up-to-date information available, this second edition emphasizes the practical application of current technology. It covers environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring in great detail, from the federal regulations that govern environmental investigations, to the various direct and indirect methods of investigating and monitoring the subsurface, to the analysis and interpretation of complex sets of environmental data.

Cheaper, better, faster was the mantra of the 1990s, resulting in more streamlined approaches to both environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring, but also pitting the application of good science against the mandate to get a project done as quickly and inexpensively as possible. This book provides unbiased, technical discussions of the tremendously powerful tools developed in the last decade, helping environmental professionals strike a balance between good science and economics. ...
