5-0 out of 5 stars For all in nursing, allied health sciences
This book is a masterful collection of physics-related science and principles that directly relate to anyone who will be working in a hospital, clinic or health environment.

The text itself is nicely done, with examples, charts, and diagrams.Even better, each chapter has its own review questions, example problems, and references.

Chapters include:Electrical Safety in the Hospital, Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism; Internal Energy, Heat and Temperature; Molecular Phenomena Related to Biological Processes; Further Medical Applications of Pressures in Fluids; The Effects of Heat Energy; Bioelectricity; Physics of Hearing; Physics of Vision; Light and Modern Physics; Nuclear Radiation; Pressure and the Circulatory System; Properties of Liquids; Properties of Gases; Description of Motion; Causes of Motion (which includes "Clinical Applications of Gravity").

This book is NOT just another physics book with biology tacked on.This one, like very few others, is directed at students in the health-related fields. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly good
The methodology used for each solution is very clear and reasonable. However, the references used for some of the data is not clearly given. Also, the calculated answers do not match exactly with the values given in the back of the Text Book.Overall, a good way to understand HOW to solve each problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Resource!
"Introduction to Health Physics Solutions Manual" is an essential tool for graduate and undergraduate health physics students. It is an excellent companion to the textbook "Introduction to Health Physics" as it provides outstanding examples of how to approach and solve practical health physics problems.

In addition to giving new students an understanding of fundamental health physics principles and preparing them for exams, the solutions manual is great for refreshers and day to day health physics work.

Buying both of these books together is a must!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for Students and HP Professionals
Dr. Cember's "Introduction to Health Physics" has been an essential text in many graduate and undergraduate health physics programs for years. It has also been the primary text for numerous CHPs during their exam preparations.

This solutions manual is an excellent companion to the textbook. It provides effective examples of how to set up and solve these practical health physics problems.

The logical approach used in these solutions will assist new students in getting a clearer understanding of health physics principles. HPs preparing for the certification exam will appreciate and benefit from learning the problem solving methods demonstrated throughout the manual.

I highly recommend getting both of these books together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A key tool for HPs and students
This solutions maunal is a must have for all students using Cembers text "Introduction to Health Physics."The textbook alone is a great reference, however, these two texts together provide an excellent ground level understanding of the field and give the reader the tools to work out many of the day-to-day problems in the Health Physics field. The solutions manual really illustrates how to "problem solve" which is a necessary tool.I highly recommend these two texts together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Health Physics Tool
The solutions manual should be considered an integral part of the text book.It is absolutely essential for those studying for board certification exams or for day to day health physics work.

Novices with rudimentary problem solving skills will find the step by step solutions a powerful teaching tool.Experienced health physicists will appreciate alternate soultion pathways to relevant problems.

Book Description

This book provides an overview of all relevant topics in the field of radiation protection (health physics). Radiation Protection and Dosimetry serves as an essential handbook for practicing health physics professionals, and is also ideal as a teaching text for courses at the university level. The text is organized to introduce the reader to basic principles of radiation emission and propagation, to review current knowledge and historical aspects of the biological effects of radiation, and to cover important operational topics such as radiation shielding and dosimetry. In addition to presenting the most up to date treatment of the topics and references to the literature, most chapters contain numerical problems with their solutions for use in teaching or self assessment. A chapter devoted to Environmental Health Physics was written in collaboration with leading professionals in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practial text to have
Physics of Radiology isn't as complete a text as Martin's, it seems more like a handbook than a physics text, but it is definitely useful and is full of examples that I can't find in other books. It's a little difficult to read straight through because of the visual format (it looks like it was written on a typewriter), but the examples are great references. I would have liked it if the authors used units more often, so that I could more easily adapt the examples but in all, it was a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fab
I am a norwegian radiology student, and after searching through a heap of books on this subject, I found out this one was the best of the lot, even if it is outdated. Yes, an update would be nice..

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
It's quite clear most of the time.It has basic physics in it so you'd never need to refer to another textbook for simple things that you've forgotten.I wish it was a little more updated though. It's limited in it's coverage of things like neutron therapy. But this book is so good, you could use it as a self study guide, almost.

2-0 out of 5 stars New edition marred by typos and awkward editing
This new edition of the classic text is a disappointment, and it's use as a textbook is not recommended.

For this 3d edition, the list of typographical errors compiled by colleagues and myself stands at four pagesand growing.Errors can be found in the text, the chapter problems, andtheir solutions.Other solutions which are not clearly wrong mayinexplicably differ from your own solution at the second significantdigit.

Formulae are rarely derived from first principles. One exceptionis the change in wavelength for a photon undergoing Compton scattering froman electron, but, even here, a crucial equation (the relativistic energyinvariant) is conspicuously omitted, without which the final equationcannot be derived. The text does not even mention relativity in discussingCompton scattering.(The index does reference "Relativelyeffects" (sic) at pp. 4-11.)

Equations and formulae contain, attimes, an unnecessary proliferation of multiplication signs and units whichobscures the underlying physical principles and the simplicity of theequations themselves.Students are better served by a clear mathematicalpresentation of the underlying physics, rather than being dropped into themiddle of an obscure equation made even more so by the inclusion of severalconstants whose only purpose is to make the units work out. While any texton this subject must deal with the unavoidability of old and new units, mysuggestion is to derive the formulae from first principles and deal withthe units issue (which, after all, only amounts to including appropriateconversion factors) separately as examples or chapter problems.

Finally, the multiplication sign, "x", should be reserved forarithmetic and scientific notation, not symbolic mathematical equations. See, e.g., Equations (3.10), (4.31), (10.17), (10.32), etc., as exampleswhere the multiplication sign is unnecessary. The text also uses themultiplication sign even where numerical values are already set off byparentheses. The text's overuse of the multiplication sign gives the texta grade-schoolish flavor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful general text on radiation protection and safety
In over 25 years since its first edition, this classic textbook has been used to train countless professionals in the fundamentals of radiation protection and safety. This third edition of Cember's work incorporates several fundamental changes in radiation protection standards and methodologies adopted since publication of the second edition in 1983.The third edition has also been expanded to include more recent safety standards for radiofrequency and microwave exposure.

This textbook is useful for an upper division undergraduate or first graduate course in radiological protection, health physics, or radiation safety. Each chapter is accompanied by a useful set of problems and suggested readings.Unfortunately, many of the readings and references cited are either out of print or difficult to find. ... Book Description
Radiation and the effects of radioactivity have been known for more than 100 years. International research spanning this period has yielded a great deal of information about radiation and its biological effects and this activity has resulted in the discovery of many applications in medicine and industry including cancer therapy, medical diagnostics, and quality control during manufacturing. After Chernobyl, there has been a tendency to regard radiation as harmful, even in situations where the doses are equal to or below the natural level. Radiation and Health presents a balanced view of the nature of radiation and its existence in the environment, as well as discussing its effects on plants, animals and humans. It also provides a survey of knowledge to date, from the discovery and basic theory of radiation and radioactivity to more recent developments concerned with the nature of radiation and its effect on biological systems. Numerous examples, exercises, and diagrams are included to make this book accessible to non-specialists.Radiation and Health provides information about the uses and consequences of ionizing radiation in medicine, research, and industry. It offers a basis for applying some basic calculations and comparing the results, and identifies risk factors to help establish rules and regulations that limit radiation doses, both to the individual and to society. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good review, too many errors for 2nd edition
This is the second edition of this review text, yet there are numerous errors in the text and practice exams. As long as you know what is going on you can catch them all.Overall, useful in pointing out the trivia needed for ABR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book for Radiological Physics
If you are a medical physicist or equivalent studying for Part I of the ABR exam or equivalent, this is a must have book. The Q&A are relevant and explained well.Overall great value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and essential for physics boards
Using Huda as my primary source along with multiple years of Raphex questions and a single set of San Antonio review questions, I was able to do very well on the physics boards.

I would strongly recommend purchasing this book as all the material it contains is HIGH yield on the physics boards. Well-organized, concise, and easy to read.

Huda, raphex and old questions are all you need.In that order.Even the fine print and tables in HUDA should be memorized.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight correction
There is a seperate chapter in radiation safety, however this information is also scattered throughout the text. I would have preferred for all the material to be stuck in one section. Other people may prefer differently, but I find it difficult to remember all the factoids and magic numbers. Maybe a compromise solution would be a quick index section at the end listing all the "must know" numbers and formulas. ... Read more

Book Description
This text is a supplement to "Internal Radiation Dosimetry" (1994, Medical Physics Publishing), edited by Otto Raabe.
Chapter 1 begins with a detailed overview of the anatomy and physiology of organ systems essential to our understanding of radionuclide entry to the body and deposition within internal organs. Detailed biokinetic models of inhalation, ingestion, and skin entry are then given in Chapter 2.
Chapter 3 addresses concepts of exposure and bioassay as needed in internal dose assessment programs.
Chapter 4 addresses the design and conduct of these programs, with specific emphasis on current regulatory and legal requirements. Support information to Chapters 3 and 4 are given in Chapter 5 (variance reduction models) and Chapter 6 (fecal monitoring for plutonium and other long-lived actinides).
Chapters 7 and 8 cover Bayesian statistics and the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo, respectively, as applied to internal dosimetry.
Medical aspects of internal dosimetry are covered in Chapter 9 (nuclear medicine) and in Chapter 10 (radionuclide therapy).
In many of these chapters, the authors provide detailed examples and case studies for better understanding of the concepts and theory presented. ... Read more
