5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners
This is a good book for beginners learning to fly RC helicopters. I got this for my grandson.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste you money!!!
If your over the age of 8 and have seen a helicopter flying in person you dont need to read this book. Info was relevant in 1981, not so much any more. You will learn more in 1 visit to you local hobby shop, for free.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic guide
This is a good basic guide to RC helicopters. Because of its age it has little information specific to electric helicopters so it is more useful to those running nitro helis. But even for electric fliers it has good basic info on setup and flight but don't expect too much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date and superficial
The book is a very basic guide.I was dissapointed regarding the level of information - very basic, and the dated nature of the information. The book has not been updated since it's first printing and it is way out of date.Only the cover has been re-done to give the impression that it is much newer than it acutally is.
Not Recomended.

3-0 out of 5 stars more needed
good book for the most part. however, despite it being reprinted in '04, it is really lacking in up-to-date info for anyone considering electric helis as an entrypoint to the hobby. also, the section on flight simulators is woefully inadequate and in no way reflects what is available today (eg G3, XTR etc).

both these two areas have come along in leaps and bounds in the last few years and this book would be more complete if the info were up-to-date. The existence of high-quality simulators with extrememly advanced physics can drastically cut the entrycost for a beginner (i'm talking from experience!) which is an important factor when considering whether or not to take the plunge. that said, it still makes a good read and explains a lot.

for those interested in the electric-path here's the latest beginner's guide: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=439635 ... Read more

Product Description

From transforming the ways of war to offering godlike views of inaccessible spots, revolutionizing rescues worldwide, and providing some of our most-watched TV moments—including the cloud of newscopters that trailed O. J. Simpson’s Bronco—the helicopter is far more capable than early inventors expected. Now James Chiles profiles the many helicoptrians who contributed to the development of this amazing machine, and pays tribute to the selfless heroism of pilots and crews. A virtual flying lesson and scientific adventure tale, The God Machine is more than the history of an invention; it is a journey into the minds of imaginative thinkers and a fascinating look at the ways they changed our world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Coverage of Rotocraft History and Evolution
This is one of the best and up to date books on rotocraft that I have read. It is an extensive, thorough work which is engaging and informative. I like how the author develops rotocraft theory and traces the origins of the machine from the simple early developments to modern technological advances. The pace of the book is effective and it logically flows to ensure that clear, concise coverage is given to all areas and stages of development of helicopters in both a technological and an historic perspective, which is rarely seen in books on rotocraft. It is also quite entertaining and is a great book both for the aviator and the general population. I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
I agree with the other reviewers, there is a paucity of good books on helicopter history.Unfortunately this does not remedy the situation.Perhaps it should be subtitled "stories of the helicopter" and even more specificially "American stories of the helicopter.""The God machine" was Amerocentric, disjointed, and in several instances, painful to read. If the narrative had been tightened up even a little it probably would have been entertaining, but as it was I found myself being annoyed by spelling errors and incorrect verbiage.I think Mr. Chiles' editor should be fired. If you want a solid primer on helicopters look at the Wikipedia page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Uplift Your Knowledge

From humankind's early aspirations to fly by flapping wings of wax and feathers to the roar and flap-flap-flap of today's sophisticated helicopters in war, civilian transport, construction, logging, mercy flights and search and rescue, Jim Chiles pens a sophisticated and entertaining history of "The God Machine."All of the technical matter necessary to understand choppers, how they developed and how they fly, comes clearly and easily to the non-mechanical readers as well to helicopter engineers, thanks to Chiles' skilled exposition and his deep research into the wingless mechanisms we often see in daily life, news reports, and adventure films."The God Machine" promises to add value to any library, including those in homes where parents leave good books out to tempt offspring into reading and therefore expanding their mental life. In short, "The God Machine" is a fact book for all, a worthy read on a fascinating subject, a book that uplifts your knowledge and raises your awareness of one of humanity's engineering marvels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meets a real need.
James R. Chiles' The God Machine takes an important place among a very small literature on a vital piece of modern technology - the helicopter.

Writings about or involving helicopters are plentiful. A Google search using helicopter and history turns up more than 10 million hits. Doing the same for just books in Amazon.com turns up over 12,000 and almost a thousand at Barnes & Noble. However, when you try to find just those that make any real effort to cover the breadth and depth of the subject -- the ideas underlying, development, application, and impact of this technology - numbers drop to a handful. Among those, most are either dated - which only takes a few years, given the pace of change in the world -- or focus solely on military aspects. So, even if it did nothing more than just try to cover the waterfront, The God Machine would be a valuable book.

In fact, Chiles has gone well beyond that. He's presented key issues and a fair amount of technical information in terms that almost any lay reader can understand. An example is his discussion of the problem of controlling a helicopter in a hover - the invaluable characteristic that distinguishes it from almost all other aircraft. He explains how this problem frustrated early visionaries and inventors and how it was finally overcome - down to the specific hardware involved and how it works this magic.

In taking a broad view, Chiles also discusses the huge gaps between vision and reality that have been a persistent part of the story. One of these gaps involved the idea of a simple, cheap device that would displace the family car and reduce increasing congestion on highways. This vision butted against the reality of a technology that defied finding a practical combination of cost, capability, and reliability that could put the product in the hands of the masses. He shows how these same factors restricted ownership and use to the wealthy, companies, and public agencies meeting special needs. He shows how various inventors tried, always unsuccessfully, to overcome these obstacles.

Chiles also shows how the helicopter achieved a unique place in meeting special needs - especially for the military and in such activities as arctic exploration, servicing offshore oil platforms, civilian search-and-rescue, and real-time news gathering. He also shows how evolving social and political contexts have shaped attitudes toward helicopters - especially opposition to their noise, as well as concerns about government spying on private citizens.

Finally he shows, as in the case of helicopters rescuing mountain climbers in Alaska, how availability of this technology has sometimes led to a false sense of security and personal recklessness that the public winds up paying the bills for.

While this book lacks citation to sources for specific information, as one who has worked extensively on history involving helicopters, I know that Chiles has also made accessible to general readers information found only in some rare and expensive sources. Beyond that, he's drawn on interviews with and direct observation of helicopter pilots and users - to the extent of having learned to fly a helicopter himself. Anecdotes flowing from these sources give his writing an immediate, human touch that increases entertainment, as well as informational value.

No book will ever be the last word on rotorcraft, but The God Machine certainly meets a real need. If you want to or can buy only one book on helicopters, this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The complete story of the Helicopter
Mr. Chiles has produced one of the finest books on a very intergal part of our society.I know how important the helicopter is as I flew many hours in them while in Vietnam as a 19 year old Airborne Infantryman working for a Long Range Patrol Team, 1966 & 1967.Mr. Chiles' research was very thorough as he provides background and insight into this amazing piece of aeronautical wizadry.I for one am very impressed and appreciative of Mr. Chiles approach to the subject as the helicopter has changed so many aspects of our lives.Good book, one to own and well worth the time to read.Thank you Mr. Chiles for all the hard work. ... Simply a great reference book! Lots of illustrations with color plates, three-view drawings, technical specifications, performance data and a brief history of each aircraft. It is divided up into historical sections and covers virtually every nation that has build a helicopter, auto-gyro or VTOL aircraft. I use it for model building, model making and for our new model kit lines. The drawings are accurate and are a great source to confirm or dispute model kits and preparation for making them. I have yet to find a better source as this for helicopters and VTOL craft. Of the highest quality as only Italy can produce! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars We Love Helicopters
I got this book for my 4-year-old son who loves helicopters.I read the book myself and think it is a great book.It has a lot of good information about helicopters and has many beautiful color pictures.I think it's a little beyond a 4-year-old's comprehension, so I put it away for a while.I know he will love this book.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I thought the book was a little overpriced. When I opened it up I thought it was awefully thin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book

This is a great book for kids that are interested in learning about helicopters and how they work. The book is well written and nicely illustrated which certainly enhances the understanding of the various types of helicopters.

The book explains how the pilot flies the helicopter and the various types of work to which the chopper is put including search and rescue, medical evacuations and in the military.

This is a fantastic book that is a helpful guide for kids who may wish to have a career as chopper pilots when they grow up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helicopters at War
This is a very informative book, with great pictures and good descriptions. The only reason that I've given it three stars is that it includes a page on Helicopters at War. It has a very short summary of the use of helicopters in Vietnam, Korea, and the Gulf War. Certainly done very well and with pictures showing soldiers jumping out the helicopters -- some with medical situations and one with guns (albiet from distance).

I just didn't want to have to answer the next questions that would come from my 4 year old. Perhaps for an older age when these topics have already been discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
Richard Kirkland is legendary for his P-38 Lightning missions in the South Pacific theater during WWII. After the war, he realized the potential of Igor Sikorsky's new flying machine, and he traded in his fighter-pilot wings for rotors. The nerve-racking chopper missions he has flown are the stuff of legend: scrambling to evacuate president Harry Truman after an unthinkable "code red one" alert comes over his red phone; bantering with the real "Hawkeye" at a MASH unit before flying into North Korea to rescue wounded soldiers. Equally riveting are his accounts of a medevac pilot in Vietnam who lands a ten ton CH-46 "Frog" in the jungle at night, with no lights, under fire, with only a soldier's cigarette lighter for reference; and an aerial tour pilot who routinely pulls people out of the water above, below, and right before Niagara Falls. ... This book has many worthwhile images accompanied by a large number of significant errors and pedantic captions. There are also multiple consecutive entries for a given helicopter model, very few of which add anything to the first entry for that model.

Product Description
The modern helicopter is a sophisticated device which merges a surprising number of technologies together. This wide range of disciplines is one of the fascinations of the helicopter, but it is also makes a complete understanding difficult.

Those searching for an understanding of the helicopter will find The Art of the Helicopter invaluable.John Watkinson approaches every subject associated with the helicopter from first principles and builds up in a clearly explained logical sequence using plain English and clear diagrams, avoiding unnecessary mathematics.

Technical terms and buzzwords are defined and acronyms are spelled out.Misnomers, myths and old wives tales (for there are plenty surrounding helicopters) are disposed of.Whilst the contents of the book are expressed in straightforward language there is no oversimplification and the content is based on established physics and accepted theory. The student of helicopter technology or aerodynamics will find here a concise introduction leading naturally to more advanced textbooks on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of the Helicopter
Reply to Mr Ferguson
There is no misunderstanding. Watkinson is correct. In fact the entire book is a very refreshing insight into a subject that at times is being opinionated by a great deal of quasi-science. As a pilot I find I often return to further my knowledge and get explanations to statements in other helicopter books and literature that do not make sense. Further, Watkinson is not a journalist, he is a writer and has more than 20 books over the last 15 years. Whilst being a Renaissance man - a person that has expertise, insight and with great wisdom moves across multiple disciplines finding the common universal laws that apply to them, he is highly respected by the selfappointed Gurus in the film/television business and often sought out to answer their queries. The book in question is a good example of his cross-disciplinary insights as it describes phenomenon using impedances, very common to the electrical engineer. Watkinson also was a helicopter pilot and even has patents pertaining to this discipline. Specifically, on the subject of energies, they all are so fundamental ever since Sir Isaac made them clear to the rest of us. They are natures true laws and I am immensely thankful that nobody can break them. This book is highly recommended and deserves becoming a reference work, it has got all the ingredients for this. ... Product Description
Alan Bristow, founder of Bristow Helicopters, died on April 26, 2009, seven days after completing his autobiography. He was a truly remarkable man; his full-page obituary was published in The Times and The Daily Telegraph. As a merchant navy officer cadet during the war Bristow survived two sinkings, played a part in the evacuation of Rangoon and was credited with shooting down two Stukas in North Africa. He joined the Fleet Air Arm and trained as one of the first British helicopter pilots, he was the first man to land a helicopter on a battleship and became Westland's first helicopter test pilot. Sacked for knocking out the sales manager, he flew in France, Holland, Algeria, Senegal and elsewhere, narrowly escaping many helicopter crashes before winning the Croix de Guerre evacuating wounded French soldiers in Indochina. For four years he flew for Aristotle Onassis's pirate whaling fleet in Antarctica before joining Douglas Bader and providing support services to oil drillers in the Persian Gulf. Out of that grew Bristow Helicopters Ltd, the largest helicopter company in the world outside America

Bristow's circle included the great helicopter pioneers such as Igor Sikorsky and Stan Hiller, test pilots like Harold Penrose and Bill Waterton, Sheiks and Shahs and political leaders, business giants like Lord Cayzer and Freddie Laker - with whom he tossed a coin for 67,000 in 1969 - and the author James Clavell, a lifelong friend whose book 'Whirlwind' was a fictionalized account of Bristow's overnight evacuation of his people and helicopters from revolutionary Iran. Bristow represented Great Britain at four in hand carriage driving with the Duke of Edinburgh and precipitated the 'Westland Affair' when he made a takeover bid which eventually led to the resignation of Michael Heseltine and Leon Brittain, and almost to the downfall of Margaret Thatcher. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining
As a retired helicopter aviator, I had the good fortune of working for Bristow Helicopters Limited (BHL) from 1975 till 1984.During this time, I held positions from Line Pilot to Chief Pilot at BHL.

As memory serves me Mr. Bristow and I first met during 1975 at Abu Dhabi. This first meeting was to provide me one of the old man's famous dressing down due to my non-standard uniform. However, the following flight to Das Island, and surrounding oil rigs, is one of my most cherished memories I have from thirty-nine years as an aviator. We, my wife Joyce and I, were to meet Mr. Bristow, members of his family, and many of the BHL Stalwarts again in the following years. But none of those memories are as vivid as my first meeting with one of the legends of the helicopter industry.

ALAN BRISTOW HELICOPTER PIONEER for me was informative and entertaining. It is a first-person narrative of the helicoopter industry in the words of one of the industry's legends.Having sat in a Bristow Bar and heard the old man talk, reading this was like listening to his voice tell his story. From the first word to the last word, I was enthralled. It is a must read for past, current, and future members of the helicopter industry and anyone wanting to vicariously live the life of a true life adventurer!

5-0 out of 5 stars A personal account of an incredible life.
Some time ago one of my sons called to ask me some questions about the British army. It transpired that a new employee in his firm was, like myself, a retired army officer and my son was concerned that this man had a senior position of trust and was claiming to have done far more than seemed possible during that former career in uniform. I wonder if the call would have been made at all had that new colleague been Alan Bristow whose own real-life CV might have been instantly dismissed as pure fiction.

Alan Bristow died shortly after this biography was completed and, all things considered, we should be grateful for its completion. Survivor of two ships sinking under his feet in WW2, credited with shooting down two Stukas, one of the earliest British helicopter pilots, first man in the world to land a helicopter on a battleship, holder of the Croix de Guerre, veteran of many of the world's conflicts from WW2 onwards, flew air support for pirate whaling fleets as well as for oil workers in the Persian Gulf and much more besides. Everything this man accomplished and experienced led inexorably to his forming Bristow Helicopters, the largest helicopter company in the world outside the USA. Oh!, and he almost brought down Margaret Thatcher's government.

Alan Bristow lived a full and complete life and this autobiography discloses the detail of his life and his service to others as well as to himself. Above all it reveals his underlying adventurous spirit which dominated everything he undertook.

The book comprises 370 pages of often riveting text, with approx. 90 black and white photos which take the reader from those early days of service, to the various machines flown, right up to the latter days of boardroom, business and politics. It also has the most thorough Index!, which makes cross- reference so easy.

As far as biographies go, this is one of those very rare "5" Star products. For those who like helicopters, much of what you know is owed to this man, for those who admire adventurers, this man is your subject, for those who simply enjoy biographies, this man lived a life which has now provides an excellent read.

Product Description
This book straps the reader into the cockpit with an attack helicopter pioneer as he recalls three years of Vietnam combat and a quarter century of flying Army aircraft. He arrived in Vietnam in 1964 and volunteered to join the world's first attack helicopter company. The Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company (UTT) had deployed to Vietnam in 1962. It came equipped with the U.S. Army's brand new UH-1 Huey, a helicopter originally designed as an aerial ambulance. The crews, not happy with a passive combat role, began experimenting with ways to strap guns on their aircraft and attack the enemy. Through a deadly process of trial and error the pilots pushed their machines to the edge. Mistakes were made, crews were lost and lessons were learned. These lessons evolved into combat tactics and became fondly known as the 12 Cardinal Rules of Attack Helicopter Combat. Upon joining the unit the author learned about the rules. He studied them and on his first day in combat, developed his own 13th rule. Over his ensuing three years in Vietnam, the rules, especially the 13th, helped him survive over one thousand combat missions. This book provides the reader with a cockpit level view of dozens of those missions and describes several additional near disaster situations encountered by the author during over 25 years flying Army Aircraft. The author is successful in striking a balance between the grim realities of combat and the often humorous aspects of life among a group of high spirited aviators who fly into the jaws of death daily without a parachute on their back. He suggests that the 13 rules, although developed during a different war and at a different time, are applicable to armed helicopter combat operations in the 21st Century. The book contains about 200 pages and is nicely illustrated with 50 photographs. ... Read more

I buy this genre of book for my husband who flew helicopters in Vietnam. While he enjoyed this book, he felt it was more of an autobiography of the author than an accout of the war itself. He did recommend it to his friends who also flew helicopters.

Product Description
For the student learning to fly helicopters in the 21st century, this book is one of the essential keys to flight. Helicopter pilots need to thoroughly understand the consequences of their actions, and base them upon sound technical knowledge. This textbook provides a foundation by explaining why the helicopter flies and, more importantly, why it sometimes doesn't. It examines the aerodynamic factors associated with rotor stalls, mast bumping, wind effect, as well as maneuvering flight to include the hover, forward flight, the flare, and autorotation. Helicopter design and components, performance, and weight and balance is covered, along with special techniques such as different types of takeoffs and landings, operating on sloping surfaces, sling operations, mountain flying, and helicopter icing. Technical knowledge and sound handling are the crucial ingredients that make a safe pilot. This Second Edition benefits from additional discussion of the NOTAR system and strakes, as well as frequently misunderstood principles of airspeed and high altitude operations. The book also concludes with a multiple-choice practice examination; used in conjunction with quizzes for each chapter, the reader can test their grasp of helicopter aerodynamics. ... Read more
