Product Description
Since the publication of The Venomous Reptiles of Latin America by Cornell University Press in 1989, scientific discoveries and taxonomic changes have resulted in the addition of many taxa and species to the herpetological fauna of the Western Hemisphere. This updated, heavily rewritten, and greatly expanded version of that book now includes accounts of all 192 species of venomous snakes and lizards found in the Western Hemisphere. This two-volume set is illustrated with stunning color photographs, including portraits of venomous reptiles (many of which are unique in showing newly discovered species and views of male, female, and juvenile individuals); images of snakebites, an important tool for diagnosis and treatment; color vegetation and topographic maps; black-and-white photographs; line figures; and completely revised distribution maps.

Volume I includes a list of tables, preface, introduction, and regional/country accounts with related bilingual identification keys and vegetation and topographic maps. Genus and species accounts in this volume treat the lizards, coralsnakes, seasnakes, and all the pitvipers except rattlesnakes; these accounts are accompanied by color photographs of each species. Volume I also contains a complete index to both volumes.

Volume II includes descriptions of all known species of rattlesnakes. It also features four chapters by experts on mimicry, evolution, and snakebite treatment in tropical and temperate America. A glossary, literature-cited section, and index serve both volumes. Color photographs portray rattlesnakes, mimics, and the damage done by snakebite.

The Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere, Volumes I and II is an essential reference for all naturalists interested in herpetology--amateurs impressed by the beauty and complexity of venomous reptiles as well as professional herpetologists and their students conducting research in the classroom, at the zoo, and in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Though this book is heavy and hard to carry around it makes up for in the information, and photography. However, this book could have some adjustments. I would love if they updated the book to include new species. What is great about it is that it tells reference for other bookssuch as those by Klauber, Boulenger, and Lamar. It also has scale counts, diets, and distributions including type localities. In conclusion, this book is the best for Herpetologists, and serious readers interested in snakes. Add this magnificent book to your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plain,but nice...
This is, to my knowledge, the only guide covering in depth and detail the gecko fauna of the (former) USSR.

It is plain and hasn't got all the nice color photography we are used to nowaday. Some drawings and fairly academic text, although still readable.
Great to be used as a (field) guide or to find were are all those captive geckos ever came from, and thus learn more about there biotop.

Since it is the only book on this particular subject available it is a must have in every herpetologists bookshelf. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In the mid-1980s, as a result of our mutual interest in the history of natural history, we began discussing the desirability of organizing a symposium on collection building in ichthyology and herpetology. These discussions led to a symposium entitled "Collection Building in Ichthyology and Herpetologyin the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries," which constituted the Fifth North American Meeting of The Society for the History of Natural History, held in conjunction with the 70th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, in Charleston, South Carolina. Twenty-three papers were presented in the sessions of the symposium held on the 18th and 19th of June 1990 on the campus of the College of Charleston. Since that time, at the suggestion of speakers and members of the audience of the symposium, and with the idea of publishing an expanded volume on the subject, we contacted numerous ichthyologists and herpetologists around the world, with the request that they write chapters on collection building related to their own institution or geographic region. Many workers replied in the affirmative, with the result that this volume contains 38 papers, representing the combined work of 55 authors. Despite considerable efforts, the coverage is by no means complete: we were unable to obtain commitments from anyone to write on several important collections and geographic areas. Nevertheless, this volume does contain a wide variety of histories that span much of the world in their combined scope and that range in subject from small regional examples of collection building to mammoth world-renowned institutions, and from little known collectors to some of the ichthyological and herpetological giants of the last three centuries. Together, these studies paint a considerable part of the picture of the rich history of the study of poikilothermic vertebrates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Literature Review
This is a review of all major literature on Middle American Herpetology, herein defined as the region from southeastern Mexico through Panama. There is a brief introduction and description of methods in English and Spanish. This is followed by a table listing publications which deal with a specific taxa or group. The body of the book is a listing of taxa in Amphibia and Reptilia at species level. For each of 782 species, the authors list citations for key literature, illustrations, and distribution. This is followed by a bibliography of literature cited and a scientific name index. There are 91 color plates, 5 to 7 per page, in a section at the front of the book, and 21 small black and white plates inserted into the body of the text next to the relevant taxa. These photographs, which show a small range of the species covered, are very attractive, but they do not add appreciably to the overall value of the text. Overall this is an excellent book and an invaluable scientific resource to any researcher working on the herpetofauna of the region.I find this book to be extremely useful, and it is consistently my first refernce for bibliographic material. ...
