Product Description

This conference series reviews progress in understanding the physics of the 5th quark (beauty quark or bottom quark) and the properties of particles containing a b-quark. These quarks are produced at particle accelerators such as electron-positron accelerators or hadron colliders with the latter being the focus of the conference. One of the main issues in understanding the physics of the 5th quark is CP violation, a mechanism in particle physics that breaks the symmetry of nature between particles and antiparticles ultimately connected to the particle-antiparticle asymmetry of the universe. Topics include: recent results; CP violation; B production and spectroscopy; detectors, hardware, and computing; Vucb, Vub, and factorization; B lifetimes and mixing; rare decays; B trigger at future experiments; B physics at future hadron machines; the future of flavor.

Product Description

The Second Cairo International Conference on High Energy Physics (CICHEP II) was held at the German University in Cairo, Egypt from 14-17 January 2006. The purpose of the conference was to bring together specialized scientists in the field of High Energy Physics from universities and research institutes from all around the world to discuss current developments and new trends, results, and perspectives in this field. As with CICHEP I, the main theme of the conference was theoretical, phenomenological, and experimental aspects of the presently most active fields of High Energy Physics.

Product Description

PASCOS is an interdisciplinary symposium on the interface of of Particle physics, String theory and Cosmology. Over the past two decades these three disciplines have increasingly become closer. Historically there was always a strong overlap between particle physics and cosmology. This connection has become even stronger with the realization that some of the fundamental issues in cosmology such as the presence of dark matter and dark energy may possibly find a resolution only via new theories of particle physics. At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.

Product Description
This book provides a comprehensive summary of studies of the Z boson in electron positron interactions. The results that have been obtained have achieved unprecedented accuracy and have firmly established the Electroweak Standard Model as the cornerstone of our current understanding of modern particle physics. The book introduces the background to the Standard Model and the role of the Z boson and describes briefly the accelerators and experiments involved in these results.
The five main chapters deal with the detailed measurements of the electroweak parameters of the Z, the study of QCD, heavy quark physics, tau lepton physics and the search for new particles. Each chapter ends with a summary and outlook to prospects of future accelerators. Most of the results are from the first six years running at the first phase of electron positron collider, LEP, at energies corresponding to the Z mass, but results from the SLAC Linear Collider and some new results at higher energies are also included. ... Product Description

This volume collects the contributions to the international conference "Nuclear Structure and Dynamics", held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from May 4 to 8, 2009. The conference was hosted by the Physics Department of the University of Zagreb and the Ruder Boškovic Institute. Following the long tradition of nuclear physics meetings on the Adriatic coast, organized by our two institutions, the Conference presented a review of recent experimental and theoretical advances in the physics of nuclear structure and reactions, and provided a broad discussion forum on current and future research projects. The main focus was on the following topics: Nuclear structure and reactions far from stability - Exotic modes of excitation and decays - Collective phenomena and symmetries - Ab initio, cluster model, and shell-model approaches - Nuclear energy density functionals - Heavy-ion reactions at near-barrier energies - Dynamics of light-ion reactions - Nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest - Weak-interaction processes.

More than 170 nuclear physicists from over 30 countries participated in "Nuclear Structure and Dynamics". The considerable interest in this meeting was reflected not only in the number of participants but also in the large number of received abstracts. Following the suggestions of the International Advisory Committee, only about half of the submitted abstracts could be selected for oral presentation. In addition to 24 invited talks, more than 80 oral contributions were presented. An evening poster session was organized as part of the conference. An effort was made to provide the opportunity for young researchers to present their work, and selected posters were accepted for very short oral presentation.

Product Description

The Standard Model of the electromagnetic and weak interactions offers no explanations for the origin of the fermion mass and mixing parameters, except that they arise from Yukawa couplings, which are free parameters of the Model. The problem is worse when the question of neutrino masses is considered and, despite its remarkable success on many fronts, the Standard Model cannot explain some important experimental observations. In particular, it is not possible to describe the phenomena of neutrino oscillations that has been uncovered in recent years and, from a particle physics viewpoint, this provides the most convincing evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. Following the trend of the previous workshops, we focus also on the presentation of the current status of the main accelerator and non-accelerator neutrino mass experiments (such as Super-Kamiokande, and SNO), the future experimental projects (e.g., MiniBoone) and some of the phenomenology related to them, as well as reviews of the theoretical and phenomenological ideas related to the question of neutrino masses and related topics such as the explanation for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe.

Product Description
The first precision measurements on CP violation in the B system are reported. Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meant
to whet the appetite for further reading.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "High Energy Physics," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have High Energy Physics in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with High Energy Physics when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name High Energy Physics, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
