Editorial Review

Product Description

The subject of the book is the comprehensive consideration of uncertainty in the numerical analysis, the safety assessment, and the design of structures. Stochastic as well as non-stochastic uncertainty is treated on the basis of the superordinated uncertainty model fuzzy randomness. This new uncertainty model contains the special cases of real valued random variables and fuzzy variables and permits to take account of both uncertainty characteristics simultaneously. The book introduces to the problem of uncertainty and provides a current survey of relevant uncertainty models and their application in civil engineering. The necessary, special mathematical basics of the fuzzy set theory and the theory of fuzzy random variables are explained in an engineering manner and illustrated by way of examples. Basic ideas and methods for appropriately quantifying uncertain structural parameters are presented and demonstrated by means of characteristic examples. For processing uncertainty in structural analysis, safety assessment, and structural design completely new algorithms are introduced and described in detail as fuzzy structural analysis, fuzzy probabilistic safety assessment, and fuzzy cluster design. The application of the new methods is demonstrated for selected examples from civil engineering, their essential advantages are emphasized. For the first time this represents a coherent, overall concept for considering uncertainty in civil engineering.

The book in particular addresses to civil engineers and requires a university degree as well as basic knowledge in stochastics. But also for mechanical engineers, colleagues from applied mathematics, and other people who are interested in uncertainty problems the book represents a suitable introduction to the problem of uncertainty modeling and provides general solutions and algorithms, which may also be applied to problems from other fields beyond engineering.

From the author: It is common to make use of suitable plant and energy simulation programs, like TRNSYS (SEL 2000) or EnergyPlus (DOE 2008), to build up heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) problems for in-depth study. Optimization is a useful approach to find out the suitable parameters for system design and energy management of HVAC systems. It is ineffective to use traditional optimization methods if the derivative information is not available. Among a variety of heuristic optimization methods, the evolutionary algorithm is suitable to handle such problems. In order to determine reliable results with a limited number of function calls, a robust evolutionary algorithm (REA) based on the paradigm of evolution strategy instead of the popular genetic algorithm can effectively and efficiently search the optimal solution for HVAC problems. The REA can be applied to other engineering problems of a similar nature, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source for more information
Noise and Vibration Control Engineering: Principles and Applications looks to be a good source for a second book on noise control. By second book I mean a follow up to a good introductory book on Architectural Acoustics by Egan, Long, or Mehta et al. Long's book is very thourough.

Each Chapter is written by a recognized expert in the field. It covers theory, mathematical models, and some application.

While a few of the chapters are general, and many of them relate to building noise, the subject is not limited to buildings. As an example there is coverage of jet engine noise generation and propagation. I have only read it in sections to date, and am satisfied with it.

BTW - A good source for a hands on, non-theoretical approach is from ASHRAE, "A Practical Guide to Noise and Vibration Control for HVAC Systems".

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Use ofNoise and Vibration Control Engineering
The book has some very practical suggestions and formulas that can be used to control noise in real engineering problems. This it does by first reviewing the basic terms, definitions and international standards in acoustics.Several practical formulas for design of noise control systems are discussed and given in the text.Formulas for calculation of sound propagation in various practical situations are also given.Irecommend this book to people who have an interest in reducing noise in most practical problems.

The book is also suitable to students in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, electrical, environmental, highways and building engineering who have an interest in acoustics or noise control problems. The book is however not suitable as a class textbook as not many formulas are derived neither are there many worked examples or tutorial problems that can assist a student to prepare for examinations. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is the distillation of30 year's experience with HVAC design and construction, as a designer, as a supervisor, as an agency planner and reviewer, and finally, again, as a free lance HVAC designer of small commercial and institutional projects. The procedures and principles described here will be of value to technicians and graduate engineers with a firm background in thermodynamics and fluid flow - the bedrock fundamentals of HVAC processes. It is for engineers and technicians who are just entering the HVAC design field as members of a consulting engineering firm, or who wish to work independently for local architects and owners designing HVAC systems for small offices, mercantile establishments, churches, and restaurants. The principles and procedures outlined apply to any size job, but specific "how to" instructions are for small projects of limited scope. This book will also be of interest to licensed HVAC contractors who specialize in small commercial and institutional buildings, and who wish to understand the principles of the designs they contract to implement. In some jurisdictions, such as the State of Florida, licensed mechanical contractors are permitted to perform the design of HVAC systems that fall below specific thresholds of building occupancy and system size and cost. Thisbook will be of use to contractors who wish to take advantage of that provision. Applying the principles and methods outlined will help the designer avoid the problems that plague many projects with small budgets and unsophisticated owners. The most common of these are moisture and mildew problems exacerbated by code requirements or high density occupancy. On the other hand, these principles will also help control the costs both of design and construction, by guiding the designer to the most cost effective solution commensurate with local codes, indoor air quality, and reasonable energy efficiency. ...
