Excellent Info
I like Dewalt Estimating series because they are very practical information. This HVAC book is no exception. Stuff we all do every day: marketing yourself to GC, get on the bidder list, read blueprints, quantity take-off, vendor pricing, write quote letters, contract negotiation, job costing... You name it. This book has a lot of useful information, but it's too small.Designed as a pocket guide, but is too many pages to be put in a pocket.Lots of good information, but needs to be at least 8 1/2 X 11 to be of greater use...

Great Book for HVAC Information
I bought this as a Christmas present for my son who is a HVAC Technician.He was very happy and surprised when I gave him the book for Christmas.If you are into HVAC this would be an excellent book to have.

Good entry level book for chillers and cooling towers
I liked Marcell's book quite a bit.He is good at explaining many of the facets of chiller operation, selection and application along with cooling tower applications.I wish he would use more formulas in a future edition of the book.Overall it was a good entry level book and I would recommend it to entry level through 2 year controls and mechanical engineers needing to know more about chilled water generation.

No what I was expecting
In my opinion the author is not familiar with the subject, the book is more like a general thermodynamics' overview of the chilled water process without touching the mechanical part of it, if you are looking for an in-depth technical explanation about different chillers types keep on looking, this is not your book. ... The book is just okay in my opinion. For it to be a systems design book, there are no basic illustrations of systems. For example, there is no pictures of an all air system, all water system, air water system... They do however, cover the components that are in these systems, but I feel that they should show illustrations of the full systems. Practice exams
Testing prep book.Along with info on testing, this guide is really only useful for memorizing answers to test questions, which of course is helpful in pointing to areas needing further study.Not a substitute for a text book.

Great review for re-learning things you have forgotten. The book gives some good examples of the types of questions and content you can expect. It DOES NOT give you the test. This book is a great read whether looking for certification or knowledge. If you are looking to take a Nate test, be especially careful reading questions and answers. The answers are as much a question as the original question. Usually you can rule 2 out and you are left to choose the best answer from the other 2. Choose the easiest answer (most common problem). Example: Indoor coil iced over. Most likely cause? Low on refrigerant or dirty filter? Since low charges are not considered maintenance, dirty filter would be most LIKELY cause. I really liked this book. You can't beat it for the price!

Very helpful.....
I bought this book for my husband to use to help him study for the NATE exam. It has been very helpful in assisting him in the areas he needed help with. The CD that comes along is also helpful to take the test using the computer.

Pros:
Has info on all parts of the NATE test: Core, HP, A/C, Gas, Duct, Oil.
Has a nice CD that comes with the book to go over the questions easily. These questions are also in the book with the correct answers. Good information for helping you understand what the test is and why you should take it.

Cons:
Only has a limited amount of questions. This book is not a cramming type book. It covers what "type" of questions to look for.

Other thoughts:
I have been in the field for about 3 years with 1 year of schooling. I took the HP and Core test after studying with this book and got an 82 on the Core and an 89 on the HP. I guess it worked.

Long on principles, short on practical
I am a contractor in New England and hoped that this book would be useful for designing and installing HVAC systems in luxury single family homes.Although the author is quite good at explaining heat transfer, fluid motion and other engineering principles pertinent to HVAC, there is almost no practical applications help whatsoever.

Obsolete Control Technology
Nowadays, most HVAC systems are controlled with digital controllers with advanced control programs.VFD is often used for fans to improve the control quality and efficiency.This book does not cover these new technologies and need a major update.

Title should be "Air Handling Diagrams."
The book is very informative having the most diagrams of air handlers and VAV boxes I have seen in one source. Diagrams are fairly thorough with the inclusion of heating and cooling coils and "some" additional control features. I was hoping for more detail on the piping of heating and cooling coils with various control valve confirgurations. It is still an excellent book if you want to compare air handling configurations.

Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!
Let me tell you something, if you are taking a class on HVAC duct system and if they ask you to buy this book.
It is much better if someone else can share it with you, don't waste your money.

HVAC Plans
I was thoroughly disappointed by the book. Admittedly, I may have misunderstood what the intention (or intended market) was for the book.

If you are looking to be able to read, and create blueprints for an HVAC application - that can then be read by an HVAC professional, and a bid on the project performed - don't buy this book.

The book is a basic look at drafting (very basic - for example whole chapters dealing with things like scales and how to measure angles). There is no useful info that would allow one to either make use of or create new plans for a particular application. ... Read more
