4-0 out of 5 stars a good book on hydroponics
I enjoyed this book, it is written in a warm style and covers a variety of topics related to hydroponics. Ironically probably my favorite part is the section that talks about the different types of plants grown hydroponically. Which kinds get along with each other and even how to cook with some of them, thats useful information that is not widely availiable.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Dirt!
Good book for an overview on hydroponics. This seems like it would be a good hobby, but the cost must be high. Learned enough to know it was not for me. Good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK FOR BEGINNERS
VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER, USEFULL TO START A NEW GARDEN.I LOOK FORWARD TO USING STUFF I HAVE LEARNED IN THIS YEARS CROP.
I HAD A BASIC WORKING KNOWLELGE OF THE PRINCIPALS INVOLVED BEFORE BUYING THIS BOOK AND IT ANSWERS ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE, WELL ILLUSTRATED ALSO. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR BEGINNERS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
In a world where most hydroponics books talk about the exotic ways to grow things, this book covers a basic approach which would seem to insure success.I don't know about others but it helped me find and correct several misconceptions and problems that I have been experiencing with my hobby level hydro growing (excessive watering, inapropriate nutrient levels, etc.)Overall, a good text for beginning or hobby level hydroponic growing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date information
I purchased this book because it had supposedly been "Completely Revised and Updated" in 2005. That is rather hard to believe as most of the methods discussed are no longer appropriate. Also the copyright says 1992. However the book does have its high points. The section on selecting and growing herbs is outstanding. Also included is very good info on which herbs to use with certain foods along with recipes from professional chefs. Using hydroponic systems outdoors is also covered. I would recommend this book as an addition to a collection of hydroponic books. If you only buy one book there are many other better ones such as "How-To Hydroponics" by Keith Roberto. "Hobby Hydroponics" by Howard M. Resh would be another great choce. All in all anyone would probably learn something new from this or any other hydroponic book that would justify the price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great confidence builder
The book is a easy read nothing too tecnical or overwhelming. You will be able to build your own unit from the plans included or have the confidence to go out and buy and use one.

5-0 out of 5 stars great pass time
It is great shows many options to gardening and it becomes a great conversation piece

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to start out with
If your looking to start out with Hydroponics, this is a great book for it. It takes you though the first time start up person to an experience person. The only bad thing I didn't like was the pictures are in black and white.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short, to-the-point beginner book about hydroponics
I checked this book out from the library and my version (older one) looked very "DIY" but the information inside was useful. It offers basic concepts (but not vapid) of hydropoincs so that you could, in all likelyhood, can get started after reading this book. To get a deeper understanding of hydroponics one can also read other sources such as internet sites and other books on the subject to expand on the concepts explained in the book. The author prefers that you read it in the corresponding chapters he assigned. I liked how it is basic and gives you basically the information you need. I thought a couple topics went over my head but it wasnt that pertinent to starting growing some plants. The author provides some plans for hydroponic systems as well and gives you other resources to check up on and use to hone the craft of hydroponics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gardening Indoors
Great book covering a wide variety of details needed to OPTIMALLY grow your produce or other interesting plants/flowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I bought this as a gift for my Boyfriend because he is looking to get in to hyroponic gardening. He loves it!I saw it on a few websites and read some of the reviews before I chose it, but Amazon was, by far, the cheapest place to order it from!

1-0 out of 5 stars Practically an advertisement for hydroponic companies
This book claims to have 384 full color pages which sounds impressive until your realize that 3/4 of them are full page ads for hydroponic systems and nutrient suppliers and rhe techniques in this book are pretty much just the instructions that you can find on the packaging of various registered hydroponic products (jiffy blocks, Nutrilife) that the author shamelessly whores on every page of this book.

The book does have some good information but the author is usually too busy trying to get you to buy a ready made hydroponic system or to buy your "home made" hydroponic system parts from one of the hydroponic websites to really explain anything very well. And the photographs for the most partare not of the things you really need a visual image to understand..... they just seem to be random pictures taken from gardens that have nothing to do with the topic on the page you are currently reading.

All in all this is the worst hydroponic book I have ever read. You are much better off getting The Cannabis Grow Bible...... the author is alot more knowledgable and is less of a whore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Hydroponic garding
This is a very informative book packed with GREAT information. 1 single resource that covers more ground than many others - really the only book you might need. We found it very beneficial and a complete source of unbiased information. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars is basically the same book as by Jorge Cervantes
i was looking forward to this book, dont get me wrong , it is chalkfull of great info.. the problem is is that it is basically the same book as

Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible by Jorge Cervantes

the books are strikingly similar, images , layout etc... if u have the cervantes book dont waste ur time with this one...i dont know who ripped off who,, but i guess the consumer (me) gets it in the end on this one... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money on this book
If you happen to have any books in your library on hydroponics then you already have more information on the subject than you will find in this book.

I bought the book hoping to advance my knowledge of growing hydroponic tomatoes but what I got was a brief summary of entry level hydroponics with about two or three paragraphs devoted to tomatoes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated, not enough about tomatoes.
The book does not appear to have been updated since its introduction in 1993 and devotesonly about 30 of its 142 pages to information specific to tomatoes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reads right to left back to front
The book is Ok, nothing life changing, but some helpful material.Be ready to return it if you get one printed backwards like I did, I suppose it fires a different part of my brain and I can credit it for that.Much about basic hydro and less about tomatoes, I could have lived without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
I bought with this book because I am a beginner with hydroponics and am mostly interrested in Tomatoes.
I was surprised to find that there are so many diffeent ways to grow tomatoes hydroponically.
The tried and tested methods are saving me a lot of time, trouble, and disappointment.
I recommentd it for anyone who wantsto enjoy real tomatoes in the winter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful!
This is the fourth book on hobby hydroponics that I've purchased and I think that it contains a lot of useful information for such a thin, fast read.It does a very good job explaining how to set up a NFT (nutrient film technique) system for tomatoes. It is also told me that tomatoes prefer a pH between 6.3 and 6.5. I had previously read the range was 5.5 to 6.5 and keeping the pH at the higher level has seemed to really improve the health of the plant and the rate of growth.I discover new tomatoes growing on my single plant almost every day now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hydroponics
This book is a wonderfully put togther all incompasing book on the subject of Hydroponics I tressure it.

1-0 out of 5 stars underinformed; no conclusions
I am no difinative writer on the subject of hydroponics, but after reading the material and seeing the sources used in the book, the authors he frequently quotes are very well informed themselves but he doesn't even quote their best concepts. I knew of, and had read some of the authors quoted, and in seeing what the author of this book transposed, there was very little that was clearly defined. Also, the images meant to instruct and help could have been much better in my opinion. This was not a great investment in my opinion. I am not an ill intentioned person, but this book did not help me much in my curiosity about the science of the subject or the practical application. Very wordy, and unconclusive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basics explained well
If you want to understand the very basics of hydroponics, this may be the one. This is a no frills book. Author's purpose is to introduce you to hydroponics, nutrients, various methods in practice and get you started with your first plant. He has succeeded in that.

After reading this book, you will know enough to be dangerous, for sure :)

I will definitely recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
What I was expecting was a guide on how I could start/build/create a hydroponic garden from scratch. What i got was a simpletons generic, vague something that really taught me nothing. I don't need the history of it, or the theories behind it. The title said 'simplified workbook' but it taught me nothing, I'm at square one which is "how do I build and start a hydroponic garden? 3-0 out of 5 stars Above the basics {alittle technical}
Very well written but alittle technical for me.I found myself read and zoning out at times.Every subject was well reserched, detailed and written.I like the detailed grow room setup. It's in my library I'm not so sure it should be in yours but then again I do not know you.

Happy Growing

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad mislabeled comic book grade growing guide
Definitely not worth buying.Antiquated and full of myths with few shared facts that aren't already very well know even to newbies. The book is advertised as being by Ed Rosenthal and it is not.The book is really no more then a rehashing of old DWC methodolgies that are known to provide small expensive yields. The methodolgies suggested by the author are known to produce a system wrought with root rot problems.IMHO people would better benefit by simply reading online material from one of the major online growing forums. The hydro nutrient formula advertsied as a lure is no more then a recipe for Hoagland's formula, which is a over 30 year an old tomato nutrient formula widely posted online but never used anymore.Don't waste your money on this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars growing
The book is very informative & has good instructions & it helped me see how much work is really involved. I recommend it for anyone considering growing plants using hydroponics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old but okay as long as you have another book too.
Ed Rosenthal had a hand in this one and it looks more like Closet Cultivator than a good grow book. This book is not the best hydroponics book you can find by a long shot. It is also incomplete and there is much better information in some of the other grow books that are out there. I highly recommend The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Green for coverage of hydroponics systems and growing mediums. "Marijuana Hydroponics" is a little lite* on both of these areas. It will get you there but I have strong reserves about issuing this book a fully positive review without suggesting that you also get another book with a hydroponics section to help you along. I did like the sections on photosynthesis though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this out of date book!!!
I was looking forward to gaining some real insights with this book. However, it is one of the most disapointing books on the subject I have read. The infomation is dated, the size of the book is pitifull. Trying to remain objective, there are a few handy formulas for detailed calculations, the rest of the information here is old news, and all available for free on the net. Ed has, in the past written some of the best and most well known material on this subject. But this book is just not worth buying.Ed Rosenthal where has your integrity gone? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hydroponics
I found this book to be the best of several I have read. It is an easy read with lots of information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Weak nutrient and aeroponic information!!!
This book was written south of the equator, take that fact into account when applying the author's studies. Very weak nutrient formula information. For commercial operations, more emphasis should have been made on formulations and chemistry. In the section about individual crop formulations, the author tends to use ratios rather than ranges, leaving a very vague taste in your mouth. Mason's nutrient information in this section does not co-relate to the information given in his previous sections, major logical flaws. All supplier references are extensive and complete for someone who lives in Australia, if you live in North America, they're useless. --.

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW TO START A HYDROPONIC GARDEN!
It is apparent from reading the publication that Keith is a well read and very experienced gardener.Contained in How-To-Hydroponics is everything you will need to start your own garden whether it be a small spare closet garden or an outdoor plantation.

The book begins by giving a brief overview of hydroponics and then discusses the needs of the plant and how the gardner should meet these needs. The topics in this area include how to maintain proper pH and temperature, lighting, oxygenation, humidity, and nutrition. The book even includes recipes for making your own nutrient solution for the more sophisticated gardners.

Keith then gives blueprints for 3 affordable gardens than anyone can accomplish. The three gardens are

"The Hydroponic Planter" : EXTREMELY easy and cheap. An idiot could build this one in a weekend!!!Perfect for beginners.

"The aeroponic Aerospring" : Offers the reader the chance to build a garden employing the most advanced technique known for growing.Aeroponics!Again, easy and cheap but will require slightly more mechanical ability. ie: measuring and fitting PVC piping on a very small scale. You can learn how to glue the pipes together by simply asking your Homedepot salesman. He will give you everything you need to do the job right.

"The PVC pipe hydroponic System(s)" : This system will allow the reader to build a system that will support as few as two plants to infinitum. Two size systems using 4 and 6 inch pipe are included. The skys the limit here.To build this system you will be required to make more precise cuts and a knowledge of the proper tools and fitting PVC piping is a definite plus.

All of these systems are "doable" by beginners. This is the only book I have seen on the topic that can have you growing in only 2 days.

It also includes lots of pictures and drawings to keep you on target. The pictures are black and white but suffice. If you are interested in color photos, the book is also avialable in pdf format from www.futuregarden.com at the same price.

Good luck and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book ...
This is an excellent book for people interested in being hydroponist also for school science projects. Include plans for building productive gardens.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doody-on-a-stick good!
A good intro to indoor gardening. I have had good success with preliminary experiments growing tomatoes and lettuce, except for the aphid infestation! For those of you as paranoid of having to survive after WWIII as I am, this will be a good addition to your emergency kit library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginner's guide to hydroponic gardens
Keith Roberto does an excellent job covering all of the basics of soilfree gardening. This book is easy to understand for people like myself who have little knowledge of the subject. The essential components of a succesful soilfree garden are covered very well, such as the balance between lighting and nutrients and the chemical changes that occur in the growth process. All of this explained in "layman's terms" that we can all understand.Three well described sets of plans are included in the book which can get the reader on a small budget started.Indoors or Outside, using natural sunlight or artificial lighting, this book covers it all.I am looking forward to having a year-round fresh salad garden grown in my own garage!

This book is for you. It is not a hard bound book, but it covers the construction, from scratch, of three of the common beginner gardens. It covers "roots" from my level. Get it! ... Read more

Product Description

Plants need nutrients, air, water, and light with a little warmth to survive. Traditionally these have been provided by soil, but hydroponic techniques allow plants not only to survive but also to thrive by gaining the perfect balance of nutrients from a regulated solution. This book looks at the flood and drain method, drip feed, Nutrient Film Technique, aeroponics, and aquaponics. It offers a detailed examination of nutrient content and the strength of solution, advice on how to grow a variety of plants and how to control pests, a simple-to-follow guide to how to arrange and automate a greenhouse, and step-by-step instruction on how to build your own hydroponic systems. Without the need for stooping or weeding, hydroponics is ideal for anyone with back problems or mobility impairment, and superb for children, who can follow and monitor the plants’ growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is very well written and has clear illustrations. The Fish Tank "Eco-System" is brilliant. I had a choice between 4 books I read from the library on Hydroponics. This one was clearly the best one! I wanted it for my own collection. I look forward to my own Hydroponic Tomatoes.

3-0 out of 5 stars An inconsistent book
This is a thin book which you can read in a weekend, and it does a decent job of introducing you to the topic. But it's not very consistent -- some topics are covered in depth, while others are not explained at all.For example, the last chapter uses the word "bolster" (as a noun) repeatedly, but never explains it, and fails to include it in the glossary as well.

In addition, it has a focus on hydroponic growing in the UK -- listing only UK suppliers, and spending a lot of space discussing the particular issues of growing (outside) in the UK.It also spends many pages on what ought to be minor side-notes, like building a particular brand of commercial geodesic greenhouse, or building a system to maintain water level (a neat trick, but it could have been explained in a page or two).

So I found it a useful book to start with, but it's not one I will keep on my shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Source of Information
This book is full of excellent information and should be the first one you purchase if you are interested in Hydroponics. It is well written and concise and shows enough detail to get its point across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent; consice but packed with information
After reading 5 or 6 other books on hydroponics, this book is by far the best.It is packed with information, good drawings and pictures, and the results of ongoing research. It explains the different techniques used with hydroponics in enough detail that a beginner can make intelligent decisions about how to proceed. Excellent hands on information. It is filled with tidbits of info that add to your understanding of why things work best a certain way, without overwhelming you with extremely techincal explainations. I found that most books were too simplistic, or else textbooks, on the subject. The author did a good job of finding the middle ground. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read but From Another World...
This is a well written book with lots of interesting information about growing poppies and home lab drug manufacture in general. What I found amusing is how the author so glibly advocated "stealing" all your supplies. In fact, there was an area of discussion about making poppyseed tea where the author instructs the reader to consider stealing the poppyseeds from the grocery store since otherwise it will cost $35-50!!I got a few laughs, learned quite a bit,and got my money's worth on this out of print book for which I paid $150.00.I certainly don't intend to manufacture heroin, but it was an informative and well written book.It sure took alot of courage to go to press with a book like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I loved this book so much I put together a huge system and processed my own heroin. I destroyed my whole system though because one night I tripped on the poppies so hard that I thought the elaborate system i made was a spaceship from the planet Zoltar.

3-0 out of 5 stars SOME GEMS AMONG THE MUD
I was very happy to recieve my book. Honestly, I haven't done a good, thorough read, front to back. However, I think I can tell you that this book hasmuch hydroponic, light, fertilizer, etc. info. Notwhat I wanted;however, there is, buried among the side info, goodinfo.Harvesting/processing good.Better than nothing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hydroponic Heroin delivers the good stuff!
Learn how to easily make your own heroin, morphine, laudanum, and other opium narcotics with this thin-yet-packed illegal recipe book. I made a batch of opium seed tea the first night I read the book! I wigged hard!Thanx Robert Neil Bunch!

4-0 out of 5 stars Bunch rips the cover off yet more anti-drug propaganda!
I never thought I could browse a bookstore and find and buy a book that deals with drug use in such frank, honest terms. Robert Bunch slowly reveals the untruth spread to the general public concerning the danger ofrecreational heroin usage.

He also covers the history of opium and how itbecame renowned as a widely-accepted curative. Not many people know thatBayer (yes, like the children's aspirin manufacturer) had a big hand inbringing the poppy's magic to the new land.

I'm not sure if Bunch hasever imbibed, but he sure does leave one wondering what it would be like tojoin the horde of famous artists who were known for their love of opium andits byproducts. A week after I read it, I germinated my first poppies! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book
This book provided me with a great introduction to hydroponics with photos of different ways to utilize hydroponics for growing plants. It also gives a basic introduction to the chemistry of plants, fertilizers, O2 and H20. Good book

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the money
The tiny little book is somewhat helpful, but I was expecting it to tell me how to (in detail) build the various hydroponic systems. Basically, it just
tells about the different types and only shows how to build a very basic system. You can get this info for free on the internet (as mentioned in several other
ratings). It is ok, but you really probably should save the money for your hydro system.

1-0 out of 5 stars too small
I too was disappointed in the size of the book (its child size) and how little information it had. It is also hard to read the very small print as I am a senior citizen. Save your money!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars informative
Very technical and in depth review of hydroponic gardening and techniques. Probably a bit more information than the average hobbiest needs but packed full of good information. More designed for the large scale operation but the same techniques apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars The commercial growers bible
As a small commercial grower, this book has been invaluable to us.We used its recommendations for building our greenhouse to selecting the irrigation and media we use.We gained a lot of experience without the usual penalty costs involved. If you are on a budget and can't afford a library of books, buy this one instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
It is a good book,
I think the author could give more nutrition recipes.
The manual calculation for fertilizer very long and I think the author shout mention that some free programs on the net can do this calculation very fast.
It is a good book about hydroponics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
Provides a very good knowledge base for reference. The plant nutritional deficiency-disease chart/diagnosis tool is very helpful.A good tool for the serious hobbyist or grower.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hydroponics Bible
This is by far the most definitive work I've read on the subject.A co-worker of mine recommended this as the "Bible" of hydroponics and he was absolutely right.

It looks like a textbook right down to the ugly cyan/green cover, but it doesn't matter how a book looks if it's got it where it counts.Whether you're a hobbyist or a commercial hydroponics grower, this book is something you'll have wished you'd read. ... Read more
