4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality tools
Having used this book in my clinical teaching, I find it the best in it'sclass where quality management programmes are used. The methodologies andtests are almost complete in most areas of radiography equipment. Everyradiography manager should get a copy of this book to be aware of qualityissues that pertain to the whole running of an X-ray dept, from theequipment to the procesing fundamentals.

Definitely a good buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good QA but weak in QM/CQM/TQI
This is by far the best book on the market dealing with radiology QA. It is well written, easy to follow, and give the current criteria.

The major weakness of this book is that it claims to be about "QualityManagement" but it is not. The one and only chapter on this is almostworse than none at all. If the book was retitled "Quality Assurance inthe Imaging Science", I would give it five stars.

Product Description

This text on contemporary optical systems is intended for optical researchers and engineers, graduate students and optical microscopists in the biological and biomedical sciences. This second edition contains two completely new chapters. In addition most of the chapters from the first edition have been revised and updated. The book consists of three parts: The first discusses high-aperture optical systems, which form the backbone of optical microscopes. An example is a chapter new in the second edition on the emerging field of high numerical aperture diffractive lenses which seems to have particular promise in improving the correction of lenses. In this part particular attention is paid to optical data storage. The second part is on the use of non-linear optical techniques, including nonlinear optical excitation (total internal reflection fluorescence, second and third harmonic generation and two photon microscopy) and non-linear spectroscopy (CARS). The final part of the book presents miscellaneous techniques that are either novel or well known but finding new applications. An example of the latter is photonic force microscopy that is now rapidly becoming an exciting and indispensable tool in shedding light on the inner working of certain cells or measuring nano-mechanical properties of single molecules.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but outdated review of medical imagining
The second page of my copy of this book states:
Reprinted 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003
This is pretty much the same text published in 1988 (after corrections)
So:
Fuzzy 80's CT scan illustrations
Nothingon fat suppression, or more modern image acquisition sequences in the "Nuclear Magnetic Imaging" chapter
Definitely no mention of harmonic ultrasound
Many anachronistic references to 'future technological improvements'

I am not sure whether the publisher's reluctance to update this book represents apathy or avarice, but the failure to more frequently revise a textbook in such a rapidly changing area relegates this book from serious consideration as a primary textbook.

Some chapters are quite clear and complete (for example X-ray) but overall the writng style is a little obtuse.

In summary- some good chapters but outdated, stylistically hum-drum and superceded by the numerous other texts in this area. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Computed Tomography
Well, I'm using this book as a reference text for the graduate medical imaging systems course. It's relatively an out of date book, but it covers the most important aspects of Computed Tomography. If you're used to "easy to read" books which are published a lot these days, you'll find the language of this book a little complicated with relatively strange notations. But once you get used to it, you'll definitly enjoy your reading.
At any rate, if you're ready for some math and advanced calculus and you want to learn about the basics of CT, it worths trying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of imaging techniques
This book gives a clear, usable overview of many imaging techniques currently in use for medical imaging. It is not for laymen, as it delves into the mathematical basis for the techniques. However, for an engineer there is a satisying amount of detail with a concise overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars important text
The Electromagnetic Spectrum and the entire chapter on radiation concepts was excellent to learn from. My favorite chapter was on the x-ray tube. The chapter on grids was very helpful and I'm glad I knew this for the American Registry Examination.

Was this book hard to learn from? Not at all.

Was it highly informative? Definitely. It is worth the money.I recommend using this text also with ^The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography:Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Radiation Protection, Equipment Operation and Quality Control) Vol 1 isbn 1933023031^
and also

I also recommend

This is the best atlas of all-time.It helps out with remembering anatomy concepts for registry exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Textbook
Of all the books I had to purchase while studying to be a Radiologic Technologist this was the poorest, by far. It is poorly written , does not follow through on its chapter objectives and is a real challenge to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars carlton and adler radiographic imaging
This book does have good content but for those of you who are in your first semesters of Radiology technology it clearly does not simplify the information. It does not produce good examples or diagrams to make learning easy.It is also very cut and dry and makes it very difficult to read.It has no glossary and is poor in producing definitions. I highly recommend Bushong not only is the book fun to read but makes some of the more complex principles easier to understand. The workbook is really great also to help you prepare for your test and the end of the chapter quesions are nice because it helps to check see if you got the understanding of the chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first book
I find this one a "better" overall textbook than Christensen and Bushong. More inspiring, cosier and fairly well written.Downside : I personally found myself wanting some radiation physics tables that I had to find elsewhere ("Medical Imaging Physics"), and think the authors left out many interesting aspects physics wise, but your average student might find this works out just fine. Almost perfect starter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for students
Overall, this is an excellent text for radiography students and also physician residents in radiology. The text is comprehensive and easy to understand. We particularly like the abundance of drawings and tables. The special imaging chapters are very detailed and provide excellentinformation for students and others who use this text for referencepurposes. The chapter on mammography is particularly good as it is theonly chapter of its kind in any textbook. This chapter is excellent forthose programs that teach comprehensive mammography. The mammography artand images are superb.Seasoned radiography educators are authors of thistext and that makes this a unique book and one that is accuratetechnically. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
"This book gives readers an intuitive appreciation for random functions, plus theory and processes necessary for sophisticated applications. It covers probability theory, random processes, canonical representation, optimal filtering, and random models. Second in the SPIE/IEEE Series on Imaging Science & Engineering.

It also presents theory along with applications, to help readers intuitively appreciate random functions.

Included are special cases in which probabilistic insight is more readily achievable. When provided, proofs are in the main body of the text and clearly delineated; sometimes they are either not provided or outlines of conceptual arguments are given. The intent is to state theorems carefully and to draw clear distinctions between rigorous mathematical arguments and heuristic explanations. When a proof can be given at a mathematical level commensurate with the text and when it enhances conceptual understanding, it is usually provided; in other cases, the effort is to explain subtleties of the definitions and properties concerning random functions, and to state conditions under which a proposition applies. Attention is drawn to the differences between deterministic concepts and their random counterparts, for instance, in the mean-square calculus, orthonormal representation, and linear filtering. Such differences are sometimes glossed over in method books; however, lack of differentiation between random and deterministic analysis can lead to misinterpretation of experimental results and misuse of techniques.

The author's motivation for the book comes from his experience in teaching graduate-level image processing and having to end up teaching random processes. Even students who have taken a course on random processes have often done so in the context of linear operators on signals. This approach is inadequate for image processing. Nonlinear operators play a widening role in image processing, and the spatial nature of imaging makes it significantly different from one-dimensional signal processing. Moreover, students who have some background in stochastic processes often lack a unified view in terms of canonical representation and orthogonal projections in inner product spaces." ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description

This book provides a review of image analysis techniques as they are applied in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine. Driven in part by the remarkable increase in computing power and its ready and inexpensive availability, this is a relatively new yet rapidly expanding field. Likewise, although the use of radionuclides for diagnosis and therapy has origins dating back almost to the discovery of natural radioactivity itself, radionuclide therapy and, in particular, targeted radionuclide therapy has only recently emerged as a promising approach for therapy of cancer and, to a lesser extent, other diseases. As effort has, therefore, been made to place the reviews provided in this book in a broader context. The effort to do this is reflected by the inclusion of introductory chapters that address basic principles of nuclear medicine imaging, followed by overview of issues that are closely related to quantitative nuclear imaging and its potential role in diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

The different chapters discuss the basic principles and various steps required for obtaining quantitatively accurate data from nuclear medicine images including data collection methods and algorithms used to correct them for physical degrading factors (e.g. collimator response, attenuation, scatter, partial volume effect), and image reconstruction algorithms (analytic, iterative) as well as image processing and analysis techniques as their clinical and research applications in neurology, cardiology and oncology. Some algorithms are described and illustrated with some useful features and clinical applications. Other potential applications of quantitative image analysis such as image-guided radiation therapy are also discussed.
