4-0 out of 5 stars Immunology for the immunologist and non-immunologists
As a new student to the feild of immunology, I was looking for a good, general, updated textbook that would bring me up to speed. There are some general immunogy texts out there however they are very non-reader friendly, especially for a novice in this field. So when I read the"Handbook" I was quite pleased to find it user-friendly to anewcomer or practicing clinitian. I would definitely recommend this book tomy fellow students. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite extensive efforts to control it, malaria is still one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide. This book, now in its second edition, provides a broad and up-to-date overview of the rapidly expanding field of malaria immunology and its importance in the control of this disease. The first section deals with the malaria parasite and its interactions with both the vertebrate host and the mosquitoes which transmit the disease. In the second part, the mechanisms of immunity and their regulation by environmental and genetic factors are discussed. Finally, this volume contains several chapters on malaria vaccine development, describing the application of the most recent vaccine technologies as well as ongoing and planned vaccine trials. Authored by well-recognized experts, this volume not only demonstrates the rapid progress being made in the search for vaccines against malaria, but also broadens our understanding of immunity to infection in general. ... Product Description
Fungal immunology, an expanding field of research, studies the interaction between fungi and the immune system. Modulated immunity as well as evasive mechanisms played by fungi all contribute to the chronicity and reoccurrence of fungal infections. Hypersensitivity to various fungal elements plays a major role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. This book will serve as a comprehensive review of all known immune mechanisms for common medically important fungal pathogens. Its novelty lies in the organization: Rather than chapters devoted to specific fungi, chapters are organized by organ system. All other texts in the field, which are now quite old, are arranged according to specific fungi. Organization by body system rather than fungi is important because one particular fungus can have a different effect on defense mechanisms in different parts of the body. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good organization, mediocre figures
I use this book for first-year pharmacy students, 50% of whom have only associate's degrees and no prior exposure to genetics or molecular biology. The strengths of the book are its brevity, medical orientation (hence the title) and organization. The sequence of presentation seems to make more sense to me than other books I have examined. Kuby Immunology, for example, has far better figures and vastly more detail, especially in molecular biology and signal transduction. There is also a great deal of experimental methodology presented. But the latter features would certainly overwhelm my audience. Also, Kuby shows some peculiarities in the sequence of presentation that add to and complicate the inherent nonlinearity of the whole immunology 'story' that you want to tell students. Much the same thing can be said about Janeway, a book that seems clearly aimed at a postgraduate audience. A real downside of Roitt is mediocre figures, many of which are not even included on the Roitt web site. Kuby has all of its figures unreservedly available on the web. For my particular audience and application, Roitt is the best choice. ... Read more

Product Description
Designed to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today, The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series combines essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice, demonstrating how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled with the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a biomedical scientist may be exposed, from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.

A new volume in this exciting series, Immunology offers biomedical science students insights into the function of the immune system, the frontline of defense against pathological disease, and the diagnostic techniques used to identify associated malfunctions and disorders. By examining the key immunological principles and scientific basis of laboratory techniques--with a focus on the biomedical scientist's role in the diagnostic laboratory--the authors provide students with everything they need to know in order to prepare for specialist studies in immunology. Case studies cover current tests, the rationale behind their use, the technologies employed, the quality measures applied, and the ways in which clinicians interpret test results in order to help patients.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good review
While some Schaum's outlines are comprehensive enough to sufficiently replace introductory textbooks (Schaum's Genetics is a good example), Schaum's Immunology is not among these. This outline is formatted in a question and answer style that is well suited for review before exams. The outline does not make a good stand alone resource for independent study, however it is great as a supplementary study-aid.So while I do recommend this book for those taking a first course in immunology, I wouldn't depend on it to allow you to throw out your regular textbook or start missing lectures. ... Product Description
The aim of the issue is to describe and explain the importance of the chemokine system in hematology. The chemokine system is probably important for many aspects of normal as well as malignant hematopoiesis. A major focus is the development and treatment of hematologic malignancies, including the immunobiology of stem cell transplantation. The present reviews illustrate that chemokines can be involved in leukemogenesis. The chemokine system is also important both for the crosstalk between malignant cells and their neighbouring nonmalignant stromal cells (including endothelial cells) as well as for immunoregulation in patients treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Thus, chemokines are important both for the pathogenesis and treatment of hematological diseases. ... Read more
