If you were looking for a quick reference to refresh the concepts they list on the table of contents, this is not the a good source...

4-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Thermodynamics: A Computer Approach (SI Units Version)
The book is unusual in having a very large number of solved problems. Frankly, if I were to teach from the book, I'd like to see more opportunity for students to figure out how to solve real problems given only the theory. This is good for student's future skills and as feedback on how well I'm teaching. The book is easy to read and understand for someone without a strong background--easy for me to say and I hope true for real students. The solved problems should be helpful to someone who is without an instructor, having trouble, or no longer remembers how to solve a problem. Using SI units is a mixed blessing (in the US) at it minimizes turning problems into units conversion exercises but it provides no practice in this essential skill. ... Read more

Rizzoni's Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering provides a solid overview of the electrical engineering discipline that is especially geared toward the many non-electrical engineering students who take this course. The book was developed to fit the growing trend of the Intro to EE course morphing into a briefer, less comprehensive course.

The hallmark feature of this text is its liberal use of practical applications to illustrate important principles. The applications come from every field of engineering and feature exciting technologies. The appeal to non-engineering students are the special features such as Focus on Methodology sections and Make the Connections sidebars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for engineering majors
This book has everything you would expect for engineering. A must have for Engineering majors. And it's cheep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly fantastic reference.
I must admit here at the beginning that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this type of book.I have reference books dating back a century for the sole reason that I do not trust nor like modern works. The current trend in reference is to provide only that information which will provide the reader with exactly what they want at that exact moment. This methodology requires that the reader return continually to the reference, wasting their time and energy.Older works provide a broader view of given topics and therefore tend to be held in my favor. This work may well be - in my opinion - the last of the great engineering references.

As stated by another reviewer, this work does an excellent job of covering most of the topics and information normally contained within a four-year mechanical engineering degree. This is not to say it is an apt replacement for a degree, just an excellent accessory to one.

Unlike the majority of generalized engineering references, this publication surpasses the norm of a mishmash of datasheets cribbed from manufacturers. The information contained is highly valuable, universally applicable and beautifully organized. That being said, it is true that the content is highly codified and would be of little value to those individuals who are unfamiliar with 'higher' level mathematics or engineering.

There are those in the engineering community who will find this reference lacking in specific topics - say, technical drafting, GD&T or materials science - but on the whole it is truly superb.

My only concern after having owned it for twenty-four hours is how I am going to reinforce the binding to keep the book from falling apart from too much use...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference, even for the PE Exam
This little book is a good tool to add to your tool box.It has a fairly complete tabulation of formulas and even goes into some depth explaining them, but not too much. The only reason it got 4 vs 5 stars for therating was that the index is not cross referenced.I got the book as an aid for my first attempt at the PE Exam, and it earned its way on several questions- mechanics of materials especially.I strongly recommend this book to anyone in engineering who needs a pocket guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is just awesome!

First thing you notice when you open the box: it's tiny!
The book measures about 11.5x15.5 CM for a thickness of 3 CM.
This format makes it very easy to carry around!

It's packed with LOADS of info which cover so many fields! Plus it's printed on 1 side only, which gives you some space to add notes. The table at the beginning (literally at the beginning - on the cover!) makes finding the info you're looking for very easy: each section is designated by a letter. In each section the progression is the same: from the basics up to the most advanced.

Very very handy, a must have! I which I had it when I was studying engineering man !! There's basically almost everything you need in there! Looking through it I was amazed at all the stuff that was coming back to my memory!

The hardcover is good, it makes the book strong (and feel strong).

I think the best feature of this book is that it covers many subjects, with a broad range of complexity level. That means whether you're just looking for some basic information to refresh your memory or get up to date with something, or if you are looking for some serious formulas and calculation, it's in there!
I know that I will probably not use much of the advanced calculation presented, but I might come across a few, and this little book is gonna make the thing easy :)
It's an excellent way to refresh your memory!

A must have :)

Product Description
Plesha, Gray, and Costanzo’s Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics presents the fundamental concepts, clearly,in a modern context using applications and pedagogical devices that connect with today’s students.

The text features a five-part problem-solving methodology that is consistently used throughout all example problems. This methodology helps students lay out the steps necessary to correct problem-formulation and explains the steps needed to arrive at correct and realistic solutions. Once students have fully mastered the basic concepts, they are taught appropriate use of modern computational tools where applicable.

Further reinforcing the text's modern emphasis, the authors have brought engineering design considerations into selected problems where appropriate. This sensitizes students to the fact that engineering problems do not have a single answer and many different routes lead to a correct solution.

The first new mainstream text in engineering mechanics in nearly twenty years, Plesha, Gray, and Costanzo’s Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics will help your students learn this important material efficiently and effectively. ... Read more

I am guessing you are buying this book because it is cheaper then the school bookstore, soo...The cool thing about this book is the thermometer a long side each problem to help you scale whether you are doing ok in the subject or should get help. It's a generic statics book, gives examples and definitions. For me the difficult part was bridging the gap between the examples and the more difficult problems, but this is with any statics book. Customer Reviews (5)

4-0 out of 5 stars It is good for your SE soul
Dont expect it to read like a novel ....will require many readings and thinking before the light bulb goes off ... but beware.. a lot of the concepts cannot be easily applied in an organization that is not open to structured thinking that takes time and effort..

3-0 out of 5 stars Provides a good basis for reviewing design methods
This text provides an excellent reference text in the hands of a seasoned systems engineer. The generation of system functional flow diagrams and cost performance trade analysis is covered in detail. However, I found no correlation with set theory in chapter 4 with systems engineering design process. In my review of the text, I have found most components of the engineering process identified and covered in various amounts of detail. This text does not stand on it's own with respect to covering all aspects of the engineering design process. But then, neither do other texts I have reviewed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable systems engineering text
This book addresses systems engineering tools and methods needed for building complex systems. Our systems have gotten much more complex, more inter-coupled than they were decades ago --think of the recent (Summer '03) East Coast power failure. Systems Engineering tools, techniques, and education must progress to address the new complexity. This is why Buede's book is invaluable. He has digested much of the current state of thinking regarding systems engineering practices and concepts, and made them available.

This book reflects where systems engineering is going. It is written for practicing systems engineers who deal with complex systems, and for students who have someone leading them through the subject.Persons who engineer complex systems will find this book valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
The subject of system engineering has many facets and paths to reach an implemented 'system'.This book covers the subject thoroughly and is supplemented with student problems. This book will give anyone a firm grounding in the formal approaches to the subject and a basis for moving into system engineering practice.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this so called book
The worst text book for system engineering you could ever buy.
Concepts are vague, the text could have been much simpler, and the concept much clearer.I bet that you can read the book many times over and still not know the basics of system engineering.
The only good chapters of this book are chapters 4, 5. You know why? Because they have nothing to do with systems engineering. ... Read more

Product Description
Human Factors in Systems Engineering shows how to integrate human factors into the design of tools, machines, and systems so that they match human abilities and limitations. Unlike virtually all other books on human factors, which leave the implementation of general guidelines to engineers and designers with little or no human factors expertise, this unique book shows that the proper role of the human factors specialist is to translate general guidelines into project specific design requirements to which engineers can design. Again, while other human factors books ignore the standards, specifications, requirements, and other work products that must be prepared by engineers, this book emphasizes the methods used to generate the human factors inputs for engineering work products, and the points in the development process where these inputs are needed.

Comprehensive in its scope, Human Factors in Systems Engineering uses the systems engineering process to provide a broad understanding of the way human factors are used in the development process. It describes the full cycle of a design and shows what human factors inputs engineers and designers need at each stage of development.

Well-organized and clearly written, this invaluable text is fully supported by over a hundred illustrations, thirty tables, handy appendices, and extensive bibliographies. Its practical, hands-on approach makes it an indispensable resource for professionals and advanced students in human factors, ergonomics, industrial engineering, and systems engineering.

A unique, step-by-step guide to the application of human factors in the system development process

Human Factors in Systems Engineering

Unlike most current texts which provide general human factors recommendations but leave their interpretation to designers who are usually not trained for it, this book shows the reader how to prepare project specific system requirements that engineers can use easily and effectively. In addition, it fully explains the various work products—the standards and specifications—that engineers must produce during development, and shows what human factors inputs are required in each of them. Focusing on the entire systems engineering process, Human Factors in Systems Engineering offers professionals and advanced students a fresh, much-needed approach to the role of human factors in the design of tools, machines, and systems. ... Essential reading for the pragmatic, sensible and successful application of Human Factors to anyone in industry.
This book has provided me with information of how Human Factors should be applied to the development of a system in the 'real engineering' world. Invaluable. Brilliant. If you are in 'Human Factors' you NEED this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for students and practitioners in human factors!
Alphonse Chapanis is one of the founding fathers of the field of human factors engineering and probably its most important author. His numerous books and publications over the past half century serve as a foundation forthose engaged in the design of user-friendly tools, systems andenvironments. Now he presents what may be his best work, a comprehensivedescription of how the human factors design process actually proceeds.

While most human factors texts have concentrated on questions ofdescribing and optimizing human performance, Chapanis goes one stepfarther. The goal of this text is to show the human factors practitionerprecisely how their inputs should be included at every stage of theengineering design process.Effective coordination with design engineersfrom other disciplines is the key.Numerous entertaining andthought-provoking case studies are drawn from the authors's vast experienceto add spice to the clearly written text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Foundation Engineering by Das 7th edition
This book came to me in perfect physical condition so no complaints with that process. My complaint lies within the content of the book.I have noticed that there are way to many mistakes in the book. Especially in the problems at the end of each chapter and the answers they give in the back of the book. You can never trust the answer they put in the back of the book because on several occations I have found the answer to be wrong. Not only that, the graphical representations and charts are way to cluttered and appear to have several examples in one figure. All of the graphs need grid lines because they are all difficult to read.

This book provides the basic Reliability Physics and Engineering tools that are needed by Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Materials Scientists, and Applied Physicists to build better products. The material includes information for engineers to develop better methodologies for producing reliable product designs and materials selections to improve product reliability. Important statistical training and tools are contained within the text. The author emphasizes the physics of failure and the development of reliability engineering models for failure.

The beginning of the book concentrates on device/materials degradation and the development of the critically important time-to-failure models. Since time-to-failure is a statistical process, the needed statistical tools are presented next along with failure-rate modeling. Following that the use of accelerated testing and the modeling of the acceleration factors are presented. The next section focuses on the effective use of these acceleration factors, during initial product-level testing and operation, in order to reduce the expected device failure rate in the field. The important time-to-failure models are presented next for Electrical Engineering applications. Likewise, the next section addresses important time-to-failure models for Mechanical Engineering applications. The final chapters provide both Electrical and Mechanical Engineers with design help specifically, conversion of dynamic/transient stresses into equivalent static forms, establishing aggressive but safe design rules, and the need to look very closely at design and process interactions.

Product Description
The book is conveniently divided into two major sections. The first, an introduction to engineering, begins with a description and breakdown of the enginering profession. Material concerning most disciplines in engineering is included in this section. Engineering design is also introduced in this section, providing an opportunity to investigate the "essence of engineering" in a holistic manner. The second major section, processing engineering data, includes the essentials required in preparing for any engineering curriculum. It covers, for example, problem-solving procedures(including solving open-ended problems), engineering estimations, dimensions, and units (including both customary and SI units). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation for Engineers and Designers
I actually ended up reading this book after getting my master's degree in aerospace engineering, and even after a few years of work in industry. This was because my first crack at doing real aircraft structural design work put me completely in over my head, and this book was the first step of getting a handle on everything. In retrospect I'm completely aghast that in six years and two degrees of engineering schooling, nothing like this was taught at my particular school (which shall go un-named for it's own sake), yet it is required for the freshman year at U of Iowa.

Engineers are tasked with developing systems that produce value in a nutshell. The way you configure and define that system, iteratively dealing with the bigger parts first and sequentially working your way down to defining the smallest details last, is engineering design. This book explains the whole philosophy behind design, and how to do it. It's essentially a decision-making process, that can actually carry over into practically anything you do in life so even non-technical people could probably benefit from this book. Politicians, policy wonks / analysts, and people who debate politics in particular could have much more meaningful and productive discussions if they actually employed a design framework. (Maybe they do, but I haven't seen much evidence of it . . .)

This book lays out a ten step process of design that is iterative. Meaning you can always (and actually will have to do so many, many times) go back and repeat steps. Although these ten steps are not written in stone, and I would highly recommend any engineer / designer to develop their own steps, they are an excellent guide to improving the quality and reducing the difficulty of design work.

It ends up schools (at least mine) only really teach analysis, which was just one of the ten steps. This is one of the most laborious, most important, and, critically, easily taught so that's probably why schools concentrate on it. But they'll do their students a huge dis-service if they don't even tell the students about the other steps! Once you read the steps they sound pretty obvious / intuitive, but this doesn't mean people will know about them and apply them unless they're introduced to them first.

I would also recommend that any engineer get a good book on systems engineering if they want to understand design in a more comprehensive sense. Blanchard in particular has some good books. My school taught systems engineering as an elective that you were practically dissuaded from taking, and only offered to grad students. Instead it should be a required course that's offered before students take their capstone senior year design courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Reference
I am a plant metallurgist for a company and I constantly use this book to look at properties for various materials. The book is relatively small (unlike ASM books) and contains loads of hard to find information.

5-0 out of 5 stars More useful data than a dozen handbooks
Smith's book is excellent for two reasons:

1) His explainations of the properties, structure and applicaiton of various alloys is simple and to the point.(Many of them are somewhat out of date, but so is every other textbook in the world.)Excellent for metallurgists.

2) This book is so loaded with tables, you may never have to look any mechanical property data up in the library again.Excellent for mechanical engineers.

Although expensive, this book will replace a dozen others on your desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book is written from the prospective of a metallurgist. As such, it contains a very good discussion on the physical structure of various engineering materials, heat treatments, and alloy effects. However, italso contains lots of material data useful for engineering.

This is anexcellent book for those interested in more than stress-strain curves andyield stresses of engineering materials. ... Read more
