5-0 out of 5 stars The Measurement, Instrumentation and Sensors Handbook
Great book. Well organized and to the point. No useless theory cluttering up the technical material. Very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An opus work on the operation and application of sensors
This unwieldy tome is a great book on just about every kind of sensor you could think of. It is an edited work, and consists of over 100 chapters/articles written by different groups of individuals. In spite of that, the book has a good logical flow.

Part one is on measurement and instrumentation in general. It discusses the desirable characteristics, operational modes, accuracy, and standards of instrumentation in general.

The next ten sections discuss specific classes of sensors, their operation, applicable mathematical equations, and typical configuration/circuits needed for their use. The sensors are broken down into those that measure spatial variables, time and frequency, solid mechanical variables, fluid mechanical variables, thermal mechanical variables, electromagnetic variables, optical variables, radiation, chemical variables, and finally biomedical variables. It would probably be very difficult for any one person to understand all of these sections, as specific sections require a basic knowledge of specific disciplines, but the language is very accessible and the content very interesting. Each article contains an extensive bibliography and list of reference articles where more information can be obtained.

The next section is about signal processing. This covers everything from A/D conversion to the mathematics of analog and digital signal processing. There are plenty of circuits shown and even some worked out examples on how to design filters with certain given characteristics. This is very accessible to anyone with a background in signals and systems.

Next is a less mentally taxing section on displays. There is some history of each device, theory of operation, and advice on the most suitable environment for each type of display device, as well as interfacing information.

The final section is a brief one on control. This section seemed rather rushed and really didn't do a very good job of explaining control systems compared to the high quality of the rest of the book.

Of all the books I've owned or read on the subject of sensors, this one has the best combination of device physics, theory of operation, application circuitry, signal processing, and applicable mathematics. I highly recommend this book to any scientist who needs to learn about specific sensors and anything related to their operation, control, and possible interfaces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection of material
This book is one of the best book covering measurement and sensors. The book cover almost any sensor you think of, describe it function (the background physics) and then explain how it work with some application in software. Thisbook must have for any one working with sensor (engineers,physicist...). the book start explaining it material assuming no priorknowledge for the reader which make it much easier and easy to follow up,start from simple point to explain and then get more complicated withmathematics applied for that particular sensor. I have a degree on physicsand I believe this book is a good reference even in physics and I enjoythis book so much. It is a lot fun to read for professional or even for anyreader. Any time I was searching for more information about specific sensorthis book never turn me down. In short it's on of the greatest book Ibought and I don't mind paying it's price because it worth every penny. ... Read more

Product Description
The concept of flow injection analysis (FIA) was introduced in the mid-seventies. It was preceded by the success of segmented flow analysis, mainly in clinical and environmental analysis. This advance, as well as the development of continuous monitors for process control and environmental monitors, ensured the success of the FIA methodology. As an exceptionally effective means of mechanization for various procedures of wet chemical analysis, the FIA methodology, in use with a whole arsenal of detection methods of modern analytical chemistry, proved to be of great interest to many.

The fast and intensive development of the FIA methodology was due to several factors essential for routine analytical determinations, such as very limited sample consumption, the short analysis time based on a transient signal measurement in a flow-through detector and an on-line carrying out difficult operations of separation, preconcentration or physicochemical conversion of analytes into detectable species.

Twenty-year studies by numerous research groups all over the world have provided significant progress in the theoretical description of dispersion phenomena in FIA and various operations of physicochemical treatment of the analyte. This volume is devoted to the presentation of the current status of development of the instrumentation for FIA and the many fields of its practical applications, based on an extensive bibliography of original research publications. ... Product Description
This title presents the general principles of instrumentation processes. It explains the theoretical analysis of physical phenomena used by standard sensors and transducers to transform a physical value into an electrical signal. The pre-processing of these signals through electronic circuits – amplification, signal filtering and analog-to-digital conversion – is then detailed, in order to provide useful basic information.

Attention is then given to general complex systems. Topics covered include instrumentation and measurement chains, sensor modeling, digital signal processing and diagnostic methods and the concept of smart sensors, as well as microsystem design and applications. Numerous industrial examples punctuate the discussion, setting the subjects covered in the book in their practical context. ... Read more

Product Description
Many applications today require the Fourier-transform (FT) spectrometer to perform close to its limitations, such as taking many quantitative measurements in the visible and in the near infrared wavelength regions. In such cases, the instrument should not be considered as a perfect 'black box.' Knowing where the limitations of performance arise and which components must be improved are crucial to obtaining repeatable and accurate results. One of the objectives of this book is to help the user identify the instrument's bottleneck.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
This is being written before I actually finished the book, but this review might save someone from making a totally uninformed decision as I did.I am new to LabView, but have learned that it will be helpful in my job to learn it.I was looking for an inexpensive book to get my feet wet so to speak and at this point must say I am a little disappointed with this package.I ordered it in September of 2009, and should have noticed the publication year was 2000.I finally got to start going through the book the other night and while installing the CD, discovered not only is this a limited evaluation copy(which is clearly stated), it "expires in thirty minutes", and it is written for Windows 98 or NT(this was not stated anywhere).I am running Vista and will soon be upgrading to Windows 7, so I am not even sure how or if it will run on my computer. At one point I got an error message that said "Wrong OS".The book may be very good, but the CD may be totally useless unless you are still running 98 or NT; I am just saying be aware of this.Thats as far as I got so far, so I will try to come back and update this review if I find encouraging things to say.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly well written
This book is neither particularly insightful, nor particularly well written for the experimentalist.I suppose if you are a student learning programming concepts through the use of a graphical language it will suffice, but if you are actually trying to hook your computer up to equipment using this book -- look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for upto intermediate Labview Programmers
I like this book a lot. In first few chapters it includes a short but enough introduction about Labview. It is easy to read and to follow.

This is not a magical book which can teach you LabView from zero level to advanced one quickly. Don't expect miracles. However, if you are intended to perform DAQ with LabView, I higly recommend you to read this book with some other LabView books. This book does not go into very detail of DAQ VI's but give you some insight which may be the best for the beginning but not enough for advanced applications.

Don't forget, it takes time and effort to perform a good job for your application.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Very useful book for anyone who wants to learn how Labview can be used in Data Acquisition or just wants to learn about Labview. The first few chapters provided a good intro to Labview and the later chapters provided great examples. ... Read more

Product Description
The participation in interlaboratory studies and the use of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are widely recognised tools for the verification of the accuracy of analytical measurements and they form an integral part of quality control systems used by many laboratories, e.g. in accreditation schemes. As a response to the need to improve the quality of environmental analysis, the European Commission has been active in the past fifteen years, through BCR activity (now renamed Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme) in the organisation of series of interlaboratory studies involving expert laboratories in various analytical fields (inorganic, trace organic and speciation analysis applied to a wide variety of environmental matrices). The BCR and its successor have the task of helping European laboratories to improve the quality of measurements in analytical sectors which are vital for the European Union (biomedical, agriculture, food, environment and industry); these are most often carried out in support of EC regulations, industrial needs, trade, monitoring activities (including environment, agriculture, health and safety) and, more generally, when technical difficulties hamper a good comparability of data among EC laboratories. The collaborative projects carried out so far have placed the BCR in the position of second world CRM producer (after NIST in the USA).

Interlaboratory Studies and Certification of Reference Materials for Environmental Analysis gives an account of the importance of reference materials for the quality control of environmental analysis and describes in detail the procedures followed by BCR to prepare environmental reference materials, including aspects related to sampling, stabilization, homogenisation, homogeneity and stability testing, establishment of reference (or certified) values, and use of reference materials. Examples of environmental CRMs produced by BCR within the last 15 years are given, which represent more than 70 CRMs covering different types of materials (plants, biological materials, waters, sediments, soils and sludges, coals, ash and dust materials) certified for a range of chemical parameters (major and trace elements, chemical species, PAHs, PCBs, pesticides and dioxins).

The final section of the book describes how to organise improvement schemes for the evaluation method and/or laboratory performance. Examples of interlaboratory studies (learning scheme, proficiency testing and intercomparison in support to prenormative research) are also given.
