5-0 out of 5 stars Succint but not too dense
I had tried to read books from NOLO books (good but too legal-y don't focus on Internet files) until my son's swim coach of all people told me about this book. It is not written for legal wantobees and does not talk down to you. The authors seems to go to great lengths to touch on many topics and give you just enough information so you don't feel completely lost. I am still lost, but I understand how to protect my art much more. The law examples were very good. My only complaint was I wish I could get the practice files, but they did't come with my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference which has good exercises
This is the clearest explanation I've found on copyright and fair use. Copyright laws make no sense to me, but this book breaks it down in digestable chunks.
The examples really help, for the most part they were actually interesting and sometimes funny. The exercises were good too especially on how to find Public Domain pictures and sound. I can't say that I will ever really understand copyright laws but at least I get how to use somebody else's files now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best tool for learning e-marketing
This book is required for an internet marketing class I am taking.I find it difficult to read. The authors are throwing so much information into each chapter that it is overwhelming and hard to absorb.I also feel that it does not follow a logical path, meaning that they reference other chapters and concepts not yet touched on almost constantly.Very often the other chapters referenced come later in the book so you haven't read them yet if you are going page/chapter order.I would not recommend this book for a student of e-marketing.Perhaps, if you already have experience in this field, you may find it useful, but as a teaching tool I feel it falls short.

Product Description

In 2003, fraud and identity theft cost consumers at least $437 million dollars. In 2004, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission received 247,000 consumer complaints in 2004 (up 15% from 2003), from individuals whose identity was stolen, and according to Reuters.com (2/2005), Americans lost $548 million dollars to identity theft and consumer fraud in 2004. Don't allow yourself to become a part of the statistics!

How Personal and Internet Security Works illustrates in vivid detail the many dangers faced by those who use the Internet to send or receive email, surf the Web, conduct personal business, use a credit card, or even travel to airports and how those dangers can be solved. You'll also get detailed explanations of Internet privacy issues such as spyware, phishing, identity theft, data mining, biometrics, and security cameras, as well as Homeland Security issues such as airport scanning and terrorist screening.

2-0 out of 5 stars The big disappointment
I purchased this book online without getting a chance to look inside (the option was not available for this title...I believe I know why). In many cases buying a book by its title works out, but in this case it did not. Had I realized that this "award winning author of more than 30 books" also wrote a book called "Complete Idiot's Guide to Internet Privacy and Security", I certainly would have passed on the purchase.

For a book of 280 pages, it contains very very little real content. Each chapter begins with a one page description of the topic (probably the most useful part of the book), followed by a series of two page spreads on each subtopic. Each two page spread is completely covered by a computer generated graphic, and 4 - 8 small paragraphs, enough to fill up at most 1/2 of one of the two pages. The graphics usually attempt to depict the subtopic, but most of the time there are a few items in the graphic that relate to the topic, but the graphics alone add no value to the topics, and often are a distraction from the few small paragraphs on the two pages. Had the graphics been absent, and the text condensed into normally spaced pages, no content or meaning would have been lost, and this would have amounted to about a 70 page book full of commonly known buzzwords and surface information many already know.

As an example of how Gralla treats each subtopic, consider this analogy. If I were to read a book on how an automobile engines work, I would expect it to say something about the carburator, spark plugs, timing, camshaft, crankshaft, pistons, etc. The "Gralla" equivalent of this description would be something like "The gas goes in the engine, the spark plugs fire, and the wheels go round". For some, maybe that is enough. But for me, a book called "How Works" should tell you how it works!

So, if all you need is the "gas, sparkplug, wheels" version of how things work in the internet security world, and you have $20 or so dollars to throw at it, then this is the book for you. However, if you would like to dig a little deeper, save your $20.00 and look for a more technical book on the subject, as I am off to do. What a big disappointment, and a waste of $20. ... Product Description
The paradigm has shifted and everything you knew about the music business has completely changed. Who are the new players in the music business? Why are traditional record labels, television, and radio no longer factors in an artist's success? How do you market and distribute your music in the new music world - and how do you make money? This book answers these questions and more in its comprehensive look at the new music business - Music 3.0. While Music 2.0 encompassed the era of file sharing and digital distribution, Music 3.0 employs new ways to start and sustain a career, to develop an audience and engage them with interactive marketing. Sales, distribution, and marketing have reconfigured so much that even artists located far away from a big media center can thrive without the help of a record label - if they know how. Music 3.0 explains what has changed, why it will change even more, and how musicians and artists (photographers, writers, animators) can take advantage of the changes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the average Music business book.
Like all of Bobby Owsinski books this is well researched and well written.I would recommend it to an advanced artist or a manager. It is certainally not entry level.I fould it easy and enjoyable to read.

It is just what it claims to be, a really good guide to doing the music business in the Internet age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
Very good book for who are envolved with music and music business... Recommended for sure!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOLD NUGGET AMIDST FOOL'S GOLD
I own close to a dozen books on the topic of the changing landscape of music and how musicians of the new era might fit in; and while some of these books were helpful, "Music 3.0" was by far the best and most useful of them all. The book begins by explaining the old music model as compared to the new one. This comparison is helpful because musicians need to understand the new context of where they stand respective to their managers, their tribes and their audiences. The rest of the book presents examples of how the new music economy has benefited established artists who knew how to exploit it. I write "established artists" for a reason: While most people who buy this book will be unknowns trying to break ground (and this book is for them too), the book holds much relevance to known artists who need to refit themselves into this new era of music distribution and marketing. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are the two prime examples that are offered up. While you may already know about their innovative distribution methods, this book offers even more details and insight into why their strategies were smart, effective and most of all respectful of their fans.

For unknown artists the book introduces (or re-introduces) the concept of a Tribe, and how to respectfully be the artist among this small following of super-fans while working with them to expand the tribe into an audience (which is the dream of most unknown artists). Above all else, the author makes no false promises or grandiose claims. This is not one of those "Guaranteed-Success-Books-In-5-Easy-Steps." The book is sobering and insightful in its musings on the past, present and future of marketing.

A few key bullets about the book:
* The margins are wide for notetaking (which I did plenty of)
* The book highlights quotes from industry influentials, who are properly introduced at the beginning.
* The book summarizes each section with walk-away points
* The book offers simple graphs to help conceptualize the old industry and the new one

I highly recommend this book. I finished it in three days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
As a veteran recording artist from the golden age of the business, I was enthralled, horrified and enlightened with the insights and logical practicality in this book. Owsinsky has distilled an entirely new business plan for success in the "record" business that stands virtually every convention on its head as he outlines the step-by-step efforts both new and established artists must now take to survive and flourish.
I have now held several individuals and groups in thrall, describing his research in detail with business associates and aspiring artists and the one obvious conclusion is that if you are, in fact, an artist determined to make it in today's pirate-happy free-for-all, then this is your essential travel guide. If I were just atarting out, I'd buy it and prepare to be dismayed and outraged, then fueled and determined to follow this treasure map and claim my share of success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Marketing Book That Doesn't Read Like A Marketing Book
This book is cutting edge for marketing music in the digital age. It an absolute must have for artists that are trying to make it on their own. I believe that this is the best time to be an artist because as it's illustrated in the book, there's no gap between the artist, and the consumer. Mr. Owsinski explains everything you need to do to get your music into the hands of your tribe and how to do so without alienating them. This book was a total fresh breath of air because it's a marketing book that doesn't read like a marketing book. It has great history lessons in it starting formMusic .5 all the way up to the present, Music 3.0. I recommend this book to everyone I know who's involved with music. ... Read more

Product Description
How often do you search the Web?

Over the last 15 years, the business world has seen the Web go from irrelevant to essential. Individuals with almost every job title now search the Web on a daily basis, making it the reference desk for the masses.

As Jeska Dzwigalaski of Linden Lab puts it, “Google makes us simultaneously smarter and stupider. Got a question? With instant access to practically every piece of information ever known to humankind, we take for granted that we're only a quick Web search away from the answer.” But if we take for granted that the information is out there, why is it often so difficult to find? How often do we walk away from the computer with that terrible feeling that the information was out there, we just didn’t find it?

As competitive intelligence professionals, we use Google and a wide variety of other Web-based tools to find very specific pieces of information, answer critical business questions, and support broader marketing and sales initiatives. In short, we help companies accelerate their sales and overall market share in their niche or industry.

We’ve written this book because everyone who goes to work and finds themselves staring at the search box can use our techniques to “Go Beyond Google” and get much more out of the Web in far less time. If any of the following information needs seem relevant to your work, then this book is for you:

Information on competitors. Current and future strategy, tactics, products, acquisitions, expansion or contraction, challenges, opportunities, culture, morale, wages,
promotions, and marketing.

Information on customers. Major initiatives, current and future businesses lines, expansion, cost cutting, hiring, layoffs, challenges, needs, mergers, and
acquisitions.

Information on key individuals. Organizational roles, responsibilities, initiatives, goals, ideologies, politics, interests, and quotes.

Information on industry trends. Where new trends are heading, who is backing them, and who is attempting to slow them down.

Our goal is to help you pull the pearls of information you are searching for out from the obscure recesses of your search results so they are front and center. In the process, you will also learn to find information that you previously didn’t know was available about the subjects you’re researching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a "how to" guide to use online information searches to win more business
I've had the great pleasure to bring in Scott Swigart and Sean Campbell on several client projects specifically for their web-based searching expertise. As a result, I have first-hand knowledge of the types of searches and information that these fellows can surface - and just how valuable their results are. So I was very surprised to see that they would be willing to share their well-researched and field-tested methods in an e-book.

I was even more surprised after reading the book to see that this is literally a "how to" guide for anyone who wants to use free online information sources to win more business.

In a simple and easy-to-follow format, Sean and Scott present the best of the best in terms of the web sites that you should leverage and the search queries you should use to stop wasting your time on google and to start building your competitive advantage. They provide context for the nuts and bolts of their searching secrets by also providing some great background about competitive intelligence and real-world examples.

Whether you already have experience with advanced web searching or not, I am certain you will get value out of this book's clear and comprehensive review of the best searching approaches to use to outmaneuver competitors and improve your understanding of key customer accounts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful right out the Gate from the CI Experts Toolkit
"Go Beyond Google" is a welcome addition from 2 experts in Competitive Intelligence, Sean and Scott. Their work is an easy practical read, useful right from the start. They show you the key tools they use themselves. They share examples that illustrate how internet tools can be used to answer specific questions. The guide is built as a living document, their ebook can be added and updated as new tools and features come out.

As I read through it, they posed questions that reveal insights about companies that I hadn't considered. For example, locating former employees that used to work for a company. Those employees might be more inclined to share what they valued while being at that company and what prompted them to move to a new company.

They take each tool and tell you what value it has to them as a CI practioneer. You can easily scan the book to see if a particular tool is of interest to you. It is rich in pictures and graphics that hits the mark in terms of readability and comprehension. It isn't just for CI practioners, but for those that want to understand trends, thought leaders, companies, and opportunity.

The price for their ebook is great value and risk/reward is quite good. Even getting just one tool and question it answers is well worth it.

If you enjoy their book, stay in touch with Sean and Scott at their website and newsletter. They are skilled CI practioners that enjoy teaching and sharing with others the power of information tools, many free or low cost. They are leaders in understanding where technology is heading and the people behind those changes. They have fun doing what they do and their enthusiam and skill at their craft is exemplary.

Product Description
Many countries around the world block or filter Internet content, denying access to information—often about politics, but also relating to sexuality, culture, or religion—that they deem too sensitive for ordinary citizens. Access Denied documents and analyzes Internet filtering practices in over three dozen countries, offering the first rigorously conducted study of this accelerating trend.

Internet filtering takes place in at least forty states worldwide including many countries in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. Related Internet content control mechanisms are also in place in Canada, the United States and a cluster of countries in Europe. Drawing on a just-completed survey of global Internet filtering undertaken by the OpenNet Initiative (a collaboration of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, and the University of Cambridge) and relying on work by regional experts and an extensive network of researchers, Access Denied examines the political, legal, social, and cultural contexts of Internet filtering in these states from a variety of perspectives. Chapters discuss the mechanisms and politics of Internet filtering, the strengths and limitations of the technology that powers it, the relevance of international law, ethical considerations for corporations that supply states with the tools for blocking and filtering, and the implications of Internet filtering for activist communities that increasingly rely on Internet technologies for communicating their missions.

Reports on Internet content regulation in forty different countries follow, with each country profile outlining the types of content blocked by category and documenting key findings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview and reference
Well written and straightforward account of exactly how governments, sometimes in collusion with private business, succeed in censoring information. From overt blocking to surreptitious intimidation, the authors investigate the status of online censorship the world over. I'm specifically interested in Egypt and was happy to see the author hit on most of the key points, though I think the sourcing could have been better. Definitely a worthy reference (though perhaps as an e-book with free updates since I'm sure things will change soon, given the surveys were conducted in 2006!).

5-0 out of 5 stars an essential reference for students of cyberlaw and online free speech
This is essential reading for anyone studying the methods governments are using to stifle online speech and expression. The contributors provide a regional and country-by-country overview of the global state of online speech controls and discuss the long-term ramifications of increasing government filtering of online networks.

Even if you don't read the whole thing, this is a must-have title for your bookshelf since there is no other resource out there like this. And it should be required reading in every cyberlaw class in America. Importantly, it also contains a very helpful chapter on the mechanics of Net filtering for those not familiar with the technical issues in play here.

Very highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Access Denied: To The Whole Story
This book whilst essential reading on the topic was consistently biased against the concept of filtering the internet from the outset. The authors didn't think to bother to make the case against filtering first and loaded the book with emotive language whenever they were reinforcing their position

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, Beautifully Put Together, Basic Reference
This is a beautifully put together book in terms of brains, content, presentation, and coverage.

An edited work, with ten primary authors, it actually reflects the collaborative efforts of an international network of collaborators, and can safely be considered the seminal basic reference on this topic.

The first 150 pages include an introduction and six chapters, on measuring global internet filtering, the politics and mechanisms of
control, tools and technology for filtering, filtering and the international system, corporate filtering, and ethics. The rest of the book, 285 pages, is taken up by regional overviews and then country-specific summaries of filtering policy.

The motives for filtering are three: politics & power; social norms & morals, and security concerns.

Two types of filtering occur: announced, and disguised.Announced filters show a blocking page, unannounced filters pretend there was an error.Blocking anc be of entire sites, or specific pages identified by keywords.

The eye-opener for me was that filtering is not just on content, but on capability.Skype and Google Earth are two of the primary capabilities that are being denied to the people around the world by repressive ignorant governments who would rather have perpetual poverty than allow the people to leverage every aspect of the Internet including free global communications.

This is a first class intellectual, social, economic, and political contribution to the literature.

I recommend the following ten books along with this one:
The leadership of civilization building: Administrative and civilization theory, symbolic dialogue, and citizen skills for the 21st century
The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google
The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits (Wharton School Publishing Paperbacks)

These stuidies show that folk culture, sustained by a new and evolving vernacular, has been a key, since the Internet's beginnings, to language, practice, and interaction online. Users of many sorts continue to develop the Internet as a significant medium for generating, transmitting, documenting, and preserving folklore.

In a set of new, insightful essays, contributors Trevor J. Blank, Simon J. Bronner, Robert Dobler, Russell Frank, Gregory Hansen, Robert Glenn Howard, Lynne S. McNeill, Elizabeth Tucker, and William Westerman showcase ways the Internet both shapes and is shaped by folklore

1-0 out of 5 stars Internet Explorer 8 - Worthless
Internet Explorer 8 suggests that it was about Internet Explorer 8. Unfortunately 90% of the manual is related to subjects other than this software product. It provides almost no information about IE 8. It is designed for a class on the internet and focuses on how to search for information on the internet. I sent both manuals back. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This book covers many of the topics that one needs whether you are looking into international law, regional issues, social networking sites or intellectual property online. It is a great resource for students and practioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Assigned this book in a law school and a social science class
This book was extremely popular with students in both of my courses because it doesn't just cover current statutes and case law.It also provides a brief historical and technological description of the Internet and explores the legal and cultural challenges posed by a disruptive technology that crosses national borders at the click of a mouse. This extremely readable book covers the path of the law in both the U.S. and Europe and predicts the coming conflicts between these divergent legal regimes. In addition, Rustad provides attorneys with a comprehensive summary of key cases and concepts necessary to litigate in this rapidly evolving field.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somebody get this guy an editor
IANL (I am not a lawyer, for the two people who haven't seen that abbreviation), so I can't really speak to the coverage and choices of cases Rustad covers in this book. They seem relevant and cover a wide variety of the law relating to the internet.

I'm convinced that no editor ever worked with Rustad on this book, however. Some of the things he does in this book detract severely from understanding the law in it.Perhaps I'm most sensitive to the first chapter, Overview of the Internet, since that is what I was familiar with prior to reading the book, but when he lists Mozilla Firefox3 as a search engine, I'm wondering where the fact-checkers were.In his history of the Internet, he takes the confusing route of starting with current events and working backwards in time to its creation.

Another specific case that jumped out at me (and slapped me around the head) was his coverage of the Child Online Protection Act in chapter 9.2 (B) and the Children's Pornography Prevention Act in chapter 9.2 (D).Other than the title of the section and the use of the abbreviation "COPPA" instead of "COPA", section (D) is identical to section (B).I don't know if they're two different common names for the same legislation or separate legislation altogether.

A recurring annoyance is his habit of discussing one subject (usually a case), switching to another, and then returning to the original one.It makes for verydisjointed reading and confusing to someone new to the law.

A lot of information is in this book, but the presentation makes it difficult to understand and trust.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Excellent Instructor!
I was lucky enough to been a student in Prof. Rustad's 1st year Torts class at Suffolk Univ.law school (Boston) in the early 90s. He was one of the few, the very few, real human instructors at that school who didn't let the "law professor" title explode his head and ego. He was funny, warm, witty, and extremely knowledgeable - an excellent instructor. This series of law books has been around awhile, and I think they made an excellent choice in this title's author. ... Read more

Product Description

Because it's so large and unregulated, the Internet is a fertile breeding ground for all kinds of scams and schemes.Usually it's your credit card number they're after, and they won't stop there. Not just mere annoyances, these scams are real crimes, with real victims. Now, thanks toInternet Forensics from O'Reilly, there's something you can do about it.

This practical guide to defending against Internet fraud gives you the skills you need to uncover the origins of the spammers, con artists, and identity thieves that plague the Internet.Targeted primarily at the developer community,Internet Forensics shows you how to extract the information that lies hidden in every email message, web page, and web server on the Internet. It describes the lengths the bad guys will go to cover their tracks, and offers tricks that you can use to see through their disguises. You'll also gain an understanding for how the Internet functions, and how spammers use these protocols to their devious advantage.

The book is organized around the core technologies of the Internet-email, web sites, servers, and browsers.Chapters describe how these are used and abused and show you how information hidden in each of them can be revealed.Short examples illustrate all the major techniques that are discussed. The ethical and legal issues that arise in the uncovering of Internet abuse are also addressed.

Not surprisingly, the audience forInternet Forensics is boundless. For developers, it's a serious foray into the world of Internet security; for weekend surfers fed up with spam, it's an entertaining and fun guide that lets them play amateur detective from the safe confines of their home or office.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great intro
I disagree with the opinion that only people who know nothing about security would get anything out of this book.I am network infrastructure engineer for routers and switches, have past experience with Microsoft OS's, and have a security+ certification.I am NOT a security expert or computer forensics specialist but I have some security knowledge and I really enjoyed this book.

You won't become a security expert reading this book but It's an interesting and educational read for someone with some technical background who would like a surface level introductory. For me, this was a pleasure/entertainment read and I wasn't looking to use it as the basis for a career as a security expert.

I do like that the author provides real examples that you can try out yourself to explore further.

October 2005

Very nice. This book covers various interconnected internet security issues including email forensics, the inner workings of SMTP, spam, phishing, hacked spam-bot servers, proxy servers, anonymous surfing, and DNS. This is a relatively easy read considering the topics and the book is generally written in such a way as to tie all the topics together into a cohesive analysis. This was helpful since real-world situation never involve only one of these technologies but instead require a progression. The book discusses both theory and practical application.

I found the information helpful and would like to see the next edition cover each topic with more depth. Also I would like to see more variation of the email topics. For example, a section on Outlook/Exchange specific emails, IMAP protocol emails, etc. could be useful. There were some sections that would benefit from more examples as well. For instance, a section on how to dissect Microsoft Outlook formatted emails using Cygwin or Linux would have been a nice edition.

I definitely recommend it and enjoyed studying the contents.

Summary:

- Very good advice for both professional in the computer security field, hobbyist, and those concerned with personal computer security.
- Focus is on practical advice and examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Compendium of Netlore
For me, this is an excellent book!Like Mr. Herrington, I would not recommend it for everybody. But, if you have a technical background,
like myself, and are intensely interested in the dynamics of the internet, then this book will complement your existing knowledge in more than one area.It is well-written, pithy and truly lives up to its title.
Thank you, Mr. Jones

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, cursory, and unfocused
O'Reilly has had a hard time with their computer security lineup since they started expanding it a few years ago. While they have tried to focus on tight subjects with short volumes (this book at about 220 pages is no exception), these books often wind up being cursory treatments of the subjects, and in some cases downright wrong.

Sadly, Internet Forensics is not an exception to this rule. While I like this book more than some of the other recent O'Reilly security books, that isn't saying much. We've come to expect clear, authoritative books or inspired tricks and tips type martial from O'Reilly's authors, and instead we're given unfocused, incomplete pages.

To be fair, the topic of Internet Forensics is broad, not very well focused, and no one has written a good book on the subject. It's coming into the foreground, especially in this past year, as threat analysis has become popular. This is a new, wide open field, covering a broad range of malware, spam, phishing, and malicious website analysis coupled to tracking the origin and leading to takedown of the materials. However, this book doesn't really do a good job of much of that. And, at the end of 2006, some of the material feels positively quaint (even though it came out in late 2005). Although the author has defined his target audience in the introduction (infosec professionals, and software developers and IT operations people), I don't think they're well served with this offering.

Chapter 1, an introduction to the book, is short and scattershot. Nothing promised in the preface is really delivered (no overview of spam, phishing, or other threats). Instead, it's just some writing with little focus. This tone carries throughout the book. Chapter 2 covers the basics of IP addressing (what the heck?! if you don't assume your readership knows this, they're in the wrong place), and then talks about DNS lookups with dig and whois. The people reading this should know how to use these tools already, where are the suggested requirements for the reader? Sadly, no tips on disambiguating whois results (p 22) are given, not an unexpected finding in this book. And we start with the inefficient Perl scripts, too. All in all, we're not off to a good start.

Chapter 3 covers email, and sadly we waste time on the basics of email headers, and then go into making very good use of them. The coverage here is inconsistent and again, unfocused. By the time you finish chapter three with "is it really spam?", you're left wondering what the heck the author wanted you to learn. Chapter 4 is slightly better, focusing on on URL obfuscation. Sadly, none of the techniques given really hold up all that well any more. Again, we start with some basics and try and get somewhere, but along the way we're distracted and we've never really gotten a good sense of what's the objective.

Chapter 5 on websites tries to cover some ground, but again, it's too unfocused. We talk about mirroring a site (why "wget -r" isn't listed, which is a common way of getting a malicious phishing site or directory, I don't know) and we even talk about SQL injection, but I don't know what the author is really after. It feels like random observations thrown in with no overall goals. Chapter 6 talks about web servers, and we talk about headers and redirection, and then delve into Netcraft stats (why?) and honestly I'm not clear what was useful here. This felt more like introductory material than anything useful. If the readers are infosec professionals, they should know what a web server header looks like and how to properly fingerprint the server.

Chapter 7 is the complement to that, and talks about your browser. Again, some useful info, but it's incomplete. No real discussions about why you want to alter things other than some basic concepts. Chapter 8 talks about file contents, and there's some interesting basics on examining Word docs (track changes, strings, etc) but aside from some basics, there's not much great there. Sadly, no discussions on how to un-redact a PDF are given, just that it's been a problem.

Chapter 9, which is a nice departure from solid technical materials, comes up short. It's incomplete and disappointing. Chapter 10 talks about pattern detection and signature creation, but again, this could have been beefier.

Chapter 11, "case studies", is OK, but some better treatment to tie the lessons learned (or hopefully imparted) would have been nice. Finally, Chapter 12, "taking action", isn't very useful. No real great info or insight is here, and if you think that you'll be calling police departments about every phishing site, you're in for a sad wake up call -- there's just no way you can do that. One of the comments made in this chapter, specifically wanting to see a community response, tells me that the author (Jones) isn't well connected to the community that actually does track and respond to these threats.

Internet Forensics is a poor attempt at this broad subject. While I appreciate the scope of what the author is trying to do, the execution is weak and suffers from a lack of focus or discipline. A book twice this size covering a fraction of the material, well executed, would have been a better offering. If you feel you must get this book, make sure you get it at a steep discount.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly bad
This book should be titled, Internet Security for Complete Idiots. If you think it's a good book, it's because you don't know much about Internet security. If you're a security professional and you think it's a good book, find a new career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More convergence please - I want my IPTV!
IPTV and Internet Video explains what is happening today in the converging world of TV, Internet and communications. It turns out IPTV is really the ability to deliver programming using the IP over a private network rather than the public Internet. And those private networks are the cable, DSL and satellite networks constructed by the large companies providing these services today.

If you are like me you look forward to the day when you can interact with your TV instead of just sitting there and passively watching it. Tivo and other brands of DVRs are a start. They let you record programs and watch them when you want to, and of course you can skip the commercials. I even skip the lulls and often lame commentary between baseball pitches and football plays.

But when will we be able to watch a show and look up other information on the Internet related to what we are watching? What is that batter's average again? What other movie was this actor in? Where can I blog about that news item?

Today I can do that with a laptop while watching TV but I have to type everything in to do a search. That's not the integrated environment that is possible if I could interact with the TV program directly on my computer or computer-based TV. IPTV is what I want!

Or is it?

The book covers the differences between IPTV programming, delivered over a private network and viewed on a TV through a set-top box, and Internet Video which is usually small clips delivered on-demand through the public Internet.

The authors do an excellent job of explaining the technical and business reasons for what is happening now and in the near future of IPTV. Technical details including the various MPEG standards, multicasting and network layer reference model are discussed in this context.Business aspects are also discussed and include business models, subscription costs and "Corner Office View" sidebars that quote industry leaders on the impact of IPTV and Internet video developments.

This is an excellent book if you are in the business and want an overview of IPTV with a good balance of technical and business detail.I rate the book at 5 stars in this case. If you want a description of the gory details of UDP vs. TCP and how multicasting on IP works then this book probably doesn't have enough of those details for you.

You will also have to look elsewhere if you want to know what the next Web 2.0 or YouTube-like video craze will be. OTOH, you might just detect an opportunity not adequately addressed by the IPTV services offered by the powers-that-be and soon-to-be that are discussed in this book.

Product Description
Just as education has promoted democracy and economic growth, the Internet has the potential to benefit society as a whole. Digital citizenship, or the ability to participate in society online, promotes social inclusion. But statistics show that significant segments of the population are still excluded from digital citizenship.

The authors of this book define digital citizens as those who are online daily. By focusing on frequent use, they reconceptualize debates about the digital divide to include both the means and the skills to participate online. They offer new evidence (drawn from recent national opinion surveys and Current Population Surveys) that technology use matters for wages and income, and for civic engagement and voting.

Digital Citizenship examines three aspects of participation in society online: economic opportunity, democratic participation, and inclusion in prevailing forms of communication. The authors find that Internet use at work increases wages, with less-educated and minority workers receiving the greatest benefit, and that Internet use is significantly related to political participation, especially among the young. The authors examine in detail the gaps in technological access among minorities and the poor and predict that this digital inequality is not likely to disappear in the near future. Public policy, they argue, must address educational and technological disparities if we are to achieve full participation and citizenship in the twenty-first century. ... Read more

Every night before my 7 years old son goes to sleep, he randomly selects three pages that he like us to read from. That way he and I both learn new things about the world around us. Sometimes what is below and sometimes what is above. I cannot tell you how knowledgeable this book is. Certainly for children, especially if they are between the ages of 4-10 years, this is a fantastic gift. Enjoy!

It's great to have the use of the internet, but having an actual book in front of you to hold and read and flip through the pages is so much more appealing to me.This is a great starter encyclopedia for children to have from age 7 and up. It's great for homeschoolers also. When they go through the book, it will give you an idea of what their interests are and what they want to learn more about. The pictures are realistic, beautiful, colorful. There are so many things in it to learn and lots of tidbits about everything from the body, science, earth, animals, sports, religions, materials, dinosaurs, and on and on.Great encyclopedia to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need to be in school to learn from this book
One of the things I always hated about college was that the textbooks were usually really boring (even more boring than the professors, if you can believe that). But there was one textbook that I learned a lot from: Planning, Developing, and Marketing Successful Web Sites (Web Warrior Series)This was one of the few books I didn't sell back to the bookstore after the semester was done, and continued to reference during the early years of my career in Web development.

When I saw that Miletsky was publishing another textbook, I pre-ordered it, even though I'm long out of school and still resent the high price tag that they make students pay (I'd take a star off of my review for that, but I doubt it's the authors fault).I've already gotten my copy and read through most of it - it's actually worth the cost, and every bit as good as the textbook I used in college. And definitely better considering how much the Web has changed since then.

This book picks up long after its predecessor leaves off, detailing Web 2.0 tools and how to use them to market Web sites, get more traffic and introduce your products to different audiences. Although it might spend a little too much time discussing demographic breakdowns, the author does a great job in teaching marketing to non-marketing people. It's totally up to date, well written, clear, and packs a lot of great information into one book.

Once again, I plan to keep this book with me at work as a resource.I would recommend anybody who works in Web development or marketing not to be afraid of buying this just because you're not in school anymore. It's a really interesting read, and definitely worth the money.
