Best Book on LED technology
Many people have said that energy conservation is the key to weaning ourselves of foreign oil and dirty coal but how do we do it?This book not only gives you the fascinating story behind the development of the blue LED but also provides a path to help us conserve energy.I would especially recommend this book to anybody who is thinking of starting a green business in 2009 or beyond.

The lone inventor
The topic of the book is super fascinating: a single unknown inventor working in a small Japanese island with a restricted budget made a breakthrough discovery in a field where the competition was fierce and with almost unlimited resources ( private giant electronic corporations and universities ).

However I found the author writing to be quite flat and not very captivating.
Furthermore the sequence of chapters is rather confusing and the story is filled with boring details about some start-up linked to led technology.

Overall a good book.

Exclusive interviews with a brilliant inventor

Shuji Nakamura worked virtually alone at a small Japanese company in 1992 when he developed the bright blue light-emitting diode, or LED, that may supplant the electric light bulb in home and commercial applications. He was employed by Nichia Chemical Industries in Anan on Japan's southern island of Shikoku. Nichia invested over $1 million in Nakamura's research on indium-gallium-nitride, a compound-semiconductor alloy most other researchers had dismissed as useless for LED manufacturing because of its many defects.

Nakamura modified standard chemical vapor-deposition equipment to achieve the uniform, nanometers-thin layers needed to emit copious blue light. As Johnstone writes: "100 times brighter than commercial silicon-carbide blue LEDs, bright enough to be seen in broad daylight." (Thus, Brilliant!)

Nakamura became a celebrity in Japan. Cree Research, Durham, N.C., the market leader in silicon-carbide blue LEDs, tried to make an alliance with Nichia. When it was rebuffed by Nichia, it tried to hire Nakamura. Nakamura remained loyal to Nichia, and turned out ever brighter and more versatile diodes. By increasing the indium content, for example, he achieved bright green LEDs, and in 1996 he announced the first blue-violet laser diode.

The blue emitting diode is essential to generate bright white light. Red and green light combined in the proper proportions with blue light yields white light. The red and green can come either from other LEDs or from the blue LED itself, using phosphors to convert part of its output to lower-frequency light. LEDs have surpassed incandescent and halogen bulbs in lumens per watt, and reached the levels that only the best fluorescent tubes can attain. Their lifetimes run from 50,000 to 100,000 hours. In widespread use, they could achieve enormous cost savings. A shift to solid-state lighting would also enormously reduce production of greenhouse gases.

Johnstone describes some of the key players in a solid-state lighting industry that grosses $4 billion a year, and promises to grow quickly. Nichia, Cree, Color Kinetics of Boston, Permlight Products of Tustin, Calif., and Carmanah Technologies Corp., in Victoria, B.C., Canada, may be significant players. Johnstone doesn't discuss Royal Philips Electronics, in Amsterdam, which has great researchers, and enormous marketing and manufacturing capabilities.

Johnstone closes the book with Nakamura in 1999 when Nakamura accepts a tenured position as the Cree Professor of Solid State Lighting and Display at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before he can start his reseraches, Nichia sued him for leaking trade secrets to Cree. Nakamura counter-sued for profits; the case was heard at Japan's highest court amid wide-spread publicity; and it was settled in the early 2005.

Nakamura won the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize and Johnstone suggests that Nakamura may ultimately win a Nobel Prize for his work. Johnstone is a true believer; he thinks that solid state lighting is the most important advance in lighting since Edison. "Nakamura changed the world," claims Johnstone. Writing in "Scientific American", Glenn Zorpette agrees: "Nakamura put together a string of achievements that for genius and sheer improbability is as impressive as any other accomplishment in the history of semiconductor research."

As a general reader, I found this a fascinating, albeit sometimes difficult and confusing, account of that advance.

I heartily recommend this book for people who are interested in innovation, business, science, technology, etc.The book tells the fascinating story of Nakamura and the impact LEDs are having on the lighting industry.

Part One of the book tells the story of how Nakamura invented the first commercially successful GaN LED.Part Three explains how Nakamura became unwanted at Nichia and how he decided to move to UCSB.Parts Two and Four talk about some of the companies that are using LEDs to make exciting new products.I'll be a nit picker and say the book should be titled "Shuji Nakamura and the *Coming* revolution in Lighting Technology" because the revolution is just starting.

Although LEDs have been around for about four decades and everyone already owns products that incororate them, very few people understand the potential of LEDs and the impact that they will have on lighting over the next few years.The conversion to white LEDs for general lighting is underway.People will want to understand more about this phenomenon as they recognize the impact that LEDs are having on the lighting industry and energy consumption.The good news is that this book will serve as a tutorial for people who want to learn about LEDs. ... Wealth of information.
I purchased this book based on other reviews that I read on Amazon; I'm glad I did because it's exactly what I was looking for.

I've read other books on this subject; they were OK, but they tended to focus on the same indoor and studio lighting situations. This book goes into every professional film lighting situation that you're likely to encounter, with relevant historical and real world anecdotes along the way.

I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a comprehensive guide, reference and generally an interesting and informative text.

A must read for ETCP Electrical Test
Although this book is basically about Motion Picture production, the later electrical chapters are a must read to study for the ETCP Electrical Certification Test. Break-a-leg.

SO MUCH INFO
If you're even looking at this page and thinking about whether or not you should get it, YOU NEED IT! So much to know, so much to learn, this is a mega-stepping stone.

A true "must have"
This is by far one of the greatest books on the subject I have ever read. If you are new to film or have been doing it for years, you WILL love this book. The author presents the information in such a way that it is easily understood by rookies and will not bore seasoned cinematographers. Not to mention that it serves as a great refference source. Do yourself a favor, buy this book.

Essential reference for larger projects
I use this book extensively as a landscape architect for medium to large scale projects such as parking lots, parks, and streets. It is not a residential lighting book, although I do use the "patterns" shown here even at a small scale. My only complaint -- it is time for a new edition, incorporating LEDs and the advances in CFLs.

Beware home owners!
If I had been looking for a book on commercial residential lighting,(apartments), this would have been an excellent book.Single home lighting patterns are not included.

Photo lights, lights, lights
If you want to know everything about the proper lighting under all different kinds of circumstances, then you need this book.What to do with artificial lights, sunlight or using your flash under any and all times.

Very illuminating!
I am not a professional photographer and this book was not written for professional photographers (who probably already know everything written in it, anyway). It is written for people like me, who photograph for pleasure, don't have a lot of peripheral equipment, and want to take the best photo they can with what equipment they do have (or, at least, not buy any extra equipment that is superfluous).

The book is arranged very logically: There are major topic divisions which are chapter headings, then subheadings for relevant situations that fall under that heading. Ex: Chapter: Travel and Architecture. Subheadings: Choosing Best Light and Best Angle; Monuments and Museums; Interiors; Mixed Illumination; Sunsets and Sunrises; Night Lighting; Fireworks; Water, Beaches, and Snow.

Each category is supported by relevant text and on-point and well-captioned illustrations. Often, the illustrations include a "right" version and a "wrong" version so that you understand the underlying principles that govern each situation.

The two chapters dealing with portraits were very helpful to me, even though I don't own any lighting equipment other than a flash. The series of illustrations demonstrating not only how to use light, but also how to use shadows were extremely interesting. I have always taken the safe route of having everything well lit and adding drama in post-processing. I'm now trying to consciously allow for shadow to happen from a selected angle to better sculpt the subject. Post capture processing is not an adequate substitute for getting it right in camera, and lighting is the single biggest contributor to a good photograph. So I'm trying to understand light, which is a lot harder than it sounds.

There are ample illustrations of side lighting, bounced lighting, reflected light and countless other combinations that I can create using my flash (straight, bounced, or fill-in), existing lighting, and a simple reflector (using one of those collapsible sun shields you use to keep cars cooler). I will probably never consciously worry about lighting ratios, but actually seeing the different effects achieved by each different ratio, gives me a better idea what my final photo will look like before I take the picture.

Of course, if you do have umbrellas, off-camera lights, and other specialized studio equipment, the lighting setup sketches showing how each photo was lit will be useful (although I would think that, by the time you set up a professional studio, you already know all this). For people like me, those setup sketches are still helpful, since I can visualize what the main light is doing and what the contributions of the peripheral sources might be. It's sort of the left-brain part of photography, not the art.

The best thing I took away from this book is to understand my lighting options when presented with a photo opportunity. Whether photographing my grandson or a an interesting site during a trip, there are ways to make the best of whatever conditions are present at the moment I'm there. A professional might set up lighting or come back at a time with better conditions. But I'm not a professional, I'm there when I'm there, I don't have much time to set up, and rescheduling is not an option. So it is particularly important to fully understand what options I do have.

David Busch's Quick Snap Guide To Lighting
Very helpful. I am just getting into portrait photography and Busch explains things clearly. There is plenty of information for a more advanced reader. I would definitely recommend it along with his Nikon d90 book which I bought recently.

I bought this book because I wanted to know more about lighting techniques with external flash and studio lighting.

This book has been very helpful in showing me how to take a variety of photos in various lighting situations.It is very easy to read and you don't need to read it from cover to cover.You can skip to the section that you are interested in.

I rented some studio lights from lensrentals.com and used the techniques shown in this book to take some very professional looking photos.

At last!An introductory guide to lighting!
I purchased this book after meeting the author at his booth at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC, and found him to be as knowledgeable and engaging in person as he is on the printed page.I had read two of his other books when I was learning how to use my Nikon D60, and got this one now that I am ready to branch out and (hopefully) master the use of available light, electronic flash, and multiple light sources.

I've managed to read through it quickly, as the ideas and techniques are presented in a clear no nonsense way with lots of photos that illustrate types of lighting and their effects.Now I plan to go through and study it.I'm no professional (and do not plan to be), but I'm confident that this book will help me take pictures that look pro in every way.The illustrations are great, but I know I can do just as well myself once I've learnt the lessons this little book provides. ... excellent survey of lighting technology
Lenghtening the Day is a survey of the history of lighting technology from ancient lamps and candles to the discharge lamps and flourescent lighting of modern times. However, the bulk of the book focuses on developments within the last couple of centuries. Bowers offers the reader three kinds of analysis: a historical overview of when, how and by whom different types of lighting were developed, a technical understanding of how different lighting technologies work and a glimpse at how they were received by the public and what it was like to live with them. One of the most interesting things about the book may be its analysis of the transitionary period, roughly 1830's to the end of the nineteenth century, between candle lighting, modern gas lighting and the advent of electric lighting.

Overall, the book is informative and entertaining. It is also well illustrated with exploded diagrams, reproductions of etchings, and a few pages of color images. Keep in mind that it's a survey; so while it will give you a great overview of modern lighting development it won't go into as much detail as some books, such as "Dark Light" by Linda Simon, which more specifically chronicles the anxieties that accompanied the use of modern lighting. ...
