5-0 out of 5 stars Lighting Design Handbook
Lee Watson and his Lighting Design Handbook were both ahead of their time and behind the times.A brilliant Lighting Designer Lee's credits spanned 15 Broadway productions in the mid 1950s and early 1960s and then brought the art of lighting design to Operas, Industrial shows, and the Seattle World's Fair.

If you are looking for a book on how to program modern moving light shows avoid this book as it is way behind the time! While the moving and blinking light shows popular today existed when Watson created this handbook, they were relegated to providing the visual eye candy associated with fairly boring music.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in how light can be a communicative tool in the visual, commercial, and performing arts this book is a must read and must have for your library.

I was fortunate enough to design scenery for several productions where Lee Watson provided the lighting design. I know from that experience how clearly his Handbook takes you through methods and examples of how lighting has become an expressive art form. Also, as a contemporary of most of the 20th Century Lighting Designers he also includes ideas and thoughts from these skilled professionals to stimulate your imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lighting
Book came promptly after purchase and in better quality than I was expecting. No markings or damage to item at all, nearly pristine condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Update of a great book.
This book continues in the vein of the first and is full of excellent info for anyone interested in tourine, with data also useful for your regular Theatre-Bound technician

2-0 out of 5 stars Title was misleading
This book would be better titled Technical Details of Rock Concert Lighting. It had a lot of technical details on the hardware, but not much on the actual art of concert lighting (only one chapter: Chapter 6).I suspect that the hardware would come with their own manuals, but maybe they don't and you need a book like this. Also, the pictures are interesting but they don't seem to be all that elucidating of the key concepts -- too much detail without organizing themes, in my humble opinion.I was hoping to gain insight into classical symphony concert lighting as an art form, but there is very little of that. For me, it was like getting a book titled Painting, and finding out that it spent one chapter on the art of painting and the rest of the pages on the brush types, paint types, canvas types, easel structure, the organic chemistry of paints, the material response of canvas, the evaporation dynamics of paints, etc.If you are a rock concert visual director and need technical reviews to supplement your hardware manuals, then this might be useful. If you want to know about the lighting for the NY Philharmonic, or the art of lighting, then this is not the book for you.If the author retitled the book to "Technical Details of Rock Concert Lighting," then I would probably give it 4 stars.I'm glad I just borrowed a copy instead of buying it.It seems like the author put in a lot time into it.I hope that the next edition will have a better title and more useful figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for anyone in charge of the finer technical details of a concert
A good concert is about more than the music. "Concert Lighting: Techniques, Art, and Business" is the third edition of Focal Presses's acclaimed guide to the importance of good lighting in concert settings. James Moody is an experienced theatre technician, and Paul Dexter has done lighting for some of the biggest acts in Rock such as Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue. Good lighting enhances the music, makes the experience more memorable and more likely to return for another show. "Concert Lighting" is an absolute must for anyone in charge of the finer technical details of a concert.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I found alot of useful information. Especially in the business aspects of Concert Lighting. General History of concert lighting is very indepth. As for the art and techniques in the book, I found the book to be very basic. I'm not a lighting Designer. The only experience I have. Is hands on experience. This business is very secretive. This book has alot of the answers. ... Read more

Product Description

Written by a seasoned collector of transport memorabilia, this book chronicles the origin and evolution of cycle lamps. During the nineteenth century, keen cyclists realized how essential they were to cycle in the dark - both to light the way ahead and alert other road users. Manufacturers were quick to respond to demand, and soon a wide range of simple lamps was available, usually fuelled by oil. This study follows their development as they quickly grew in sophistication, their makers trying to out-do one another in style and efficiency.

Product Description

This book stands alone as the first general survey of lighting in Byzantium. Although relatively well known by specialists, Byzantine lighting devices have not been treated independently, but rather presented and discussed in connection with other Byzantine minor arts. The first part of the book discusses the technology and types of lighting devices and explains their decorative symbolism and social function. The second half illustrates this narrative by drawing on a Dumbarton Oaks exhibition, “Lighting in Early Byzantium,” which presented to the public some of the finest surviving late Roman and early Byzantine lighting devices. Some of these are now published for the first time.

40. Lighting Historic Buildings: A Prospectus
by Derek Phillips
Hardcover: 192 Pages (1997-12)

Isbn: 0750633425
Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan
Editorial Review

Product Description
This text first traces the history of daylighting and other sources of light, up to the end of the 19th century to show the effect light has had on the form of buildings, and then establishes how architects and designers today should approach the lighting of historic buildings in the context of present day technology. Historic buildings form a large part of a nation's heritage, whether used for their original purpose, such as a theatre, a railway terminus or house, or alternatively where the use has completely changed and the functional requirements of the new outweigh the needs of the old. For example a redundant building transformed into an art gallery. ... Read more
