1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this book
I picked up a few books on heating recently and I was so disappointed with this book I felt compelled to give a negative review of it.

First off I would like to say, one of the books I picked up called Piratical Heating Technology was far more enjoyable to read and much more information.

I would say both books try to cover the same topics but this book called Heating Technology was made in such a way that I could not "get into it" I could only skim thru it waiting for any useful tidbit that never once appeared. for $177 bucks, this book will no doubt piss you off. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars expert opinion
Caveat Emptor to the low voltage outdoor lighting enthusiasts.

I was led to this book by another reviewer; I wouldn't have found it since it didn't come up on my usual"landscape lighting" search. My specialty is low voltage outdoor lighting and I'm always looking for a better book on the topic. This isn't it.

The title refers to both indoor and outdoor lighting but the text is 90% indoor and only 10% outdoor when one might expect 50/50.My 20 years in low voltge outdoor lighting was preceded by 20 years of interior lighting design so I feel justified in claiming "expert opinion".The text on interior lighting contains nothing new; the text on outdoor low voltage lighting is rather perfunctory. There are only a handful of photographs (8, and that's a stretch)illustrating outdoor lighting and perhaps 100 or more of interior lighting schemes. Clearly this is an interior lighting book with a bit of exterior lighting thrown in to justify the title (and to perhaps broaden the market).

I was disappointed in my expectations that this new Ortho book would update the 1984 Ortho book on outdoor lighting which is reviewed along with a number of other books dealing with this topic on this site. With me the issue arises from the fact that there are many, many books on interior lighting and very, very few on exterior lighting. What were the marketing people thinking of when they slotted a book into a crowded segment while giving short shrift to a topic of growing interest and few books?

The prominent placement of "outdoor" next to "indoor" on the night scene cover may mislead someone in search of a landscape lighting book. What they seek is not here. The 1984 Ortho book on outdoor lighting merely needed updating to include the latest innovations in exterior lighting equipment and techniques. The only seriously out-of-date portions of the earlier book dealt mainly with lamps (light bulbs) of an earlier era sincemodern miniature lamp types offer more efficient, longer-lasting, compact light sources with a broad range of wattages and beam patterns that introduce economy and precision into the realm of low voltage outdoor lighting. This new book was a missed opportunity to modernize the text of an old book that had great information and wonderful photographs.Go figure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars American Miners' Carbide Lamps
This book, which was published in 1987, contains a wealth of information on carbide lamps.Carbide lamps were the main source of illumination for miners from about 1900 to 1950.They were cheap, reliable, and, best of all, they produced a lot of light! These lamps were also used by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, fishermen, and cave explorers.

This book lists the many brands of carbide lamps that were produced and has photographs and drawings of many of them.Of special interest to the collector, Appendix A gives a list of United States Carbide Lamp patents, arranged by date.Appendix B gives a list of all the known "Brand Names" and rates each brand as to rarity from 1 to 10, with 1 being very common and 10 extremely rare. This is especially valuable to the beginning collector.

This book is hardback, with a dust cover. There are a number ofinteresting old photos of lamps being used in mines and caves.Very little has been published on American carbide lamps and this is a wonderful source of information. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Air conditioning refers to the cooling and dehumidification of indoor air for thermal comfort. This requires systems for heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC). This book discusses the application and performance on thermal comfort, indoor air quality and energy efficiency of a variety of room air distribution modes. Efficient energy performance of HVAC systems due to active and passive control of energy consumption are also addressed. Furthermore, this book explores a passive energy system, called air-conditioning cupboard which exploit renewable energies as thermal sources for the purpose of saving energy. Additionally, the thermal supply for air conditioning systems can be carried out efficiently using reversible air pumps. Thus this book examines how to improve the design of these pumps, which have great potential, particularly in Mediterranean climates.Other chapters in this book explore the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) for air conditioning systems; the ventilation concepts utilising ambient energy from air ground and other renewable energy sources and different types of air-conditioning systems with good energy-saving potential, such as the liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) and solar-powered air-conditioning systems. ... Product Description
This is the third of three volumes of essential reference for those concerned with the installation and servicing of domestic and industrial gas equipment. This volume deals with the various aspects of installing and servicing industrial and commercial appliances and associated equipment.

The revised fourth edition is brought fully up to date with current Standards, in line with requirements of the ACS Certificates of Competence and NVQs, and addresses the radical changes seen in the practice of soundness testing and purging of industrial and commercial gas installations in excess of, and below, 1m3, as well as strength and tightness testing and direct purging of small low pressure industrial and commercial natural gas installations. Also addressed in the new edition are important changes to standards for gas installation pipework, boosters and compressors on industrial and commercial premises; gas installation in educational establishments; LPG cylinders in mobile catering vehicles, service vehicles and similar commercial units; as well as flues and ventilation for larger gas appliances.

Incorporating many illustrations and worked examples throughout the text, Volume 3 combines a concise reference with practical application in real-world engineering contexts to create an essential handbook for all aspects of the installation and servicing of domestic gas appliances, ideal for both students new to the field as well as professionals and none-operational professionals (e.g. Specifiers, Managers, Supervisors) as an ongoing source of reference.

* Comprehensive reference combined with practical application - an essential handbook for gas service technology
* Fully updated in line with the latest changes to Standards, NVQs and ACS Certificates of Competence
* Hundreds of line drawings and photographs maximise accessibility of the text, enabling readers to easily recognise the appliances under discussion ... Read more
