koo koo kachoo!!!
This book was a real godsend. I live in a relatively isolated area in Northern Alaska so when my walrus developed an abscessed tooth I was in real trouble. Luckily my neighbor Oooglit had a copy of this book that he was willing to lend me. So with this book, some vodka, a pair of pliers and a mallet I was able to complete my home dentistry project on Noodles (my walrus).

Also, as a thank you to my neighbor Ooglit, I was able to do some corrective orthopedic surgery on Ooglit's brother Nús'k Gugán using the same book and tools with slightly more vodka.

A good book if I can say so
Aitchison does a fine job of surveying the field of psycholinguistics and providing an introduction to the field. As always, she is concise, witty, and apropos. The strength of this book lies in the author's ability to summarise the various theories and evaluate them. I particularly enjoyed her evaluation of Chomsky through the introduction of his grammar to "Jupiter's stick insects."

Jean Aitchison is quickly becoming my favourite linguistics writer for her ability to explain complex linguistics points with ease. Some mammals tend to be more articulate than others; indeed some tend to obfuscate rather than articulate. Aitchison is clearly more articulate than most.

Accessible and delightful introduction to psycholinguistics
This book is an accessible and delightful introduction to the field of linguistics.Some of its strong points:

* Good coverage both of the arguments for standard Chomskyan theory, and the experimental evidence that fails to support it * Excellent coverage of child language acquisition * Explanations of important experiments--how they worked, what they showed, and why they mean what they mean

Whistle Pigs, Bog Lemmings, and Wolverines
One of the first things I learned from "Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is not to chase away the woodchuck that has made its den (actually its 'plunge hole') right beneath my bedroom window.It may gnaw occasionally on the deck, but if it abandons its burrow, Professor Kurta opines that a skunk is likely to take up residence.

Plus it's fun to watch the woodchuck amble across the lawn, chomping the heads off of the dandelions--I guess I can put up with the occasional gnawing noises.

This book, first published in 1957 and brought up-to-date in 1995 is filled with the natural histories of eighty-three mammals living in the Great Lakes ecosystem, livened by the occasional wry personal anecdote.There are numerous black-and-white photographs and drawings, including range maps and multiple views of mammal skulls."Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is meant to be backpacked into the field and has chapters on capturing small mammals and specimen preparation.

Some of the author's language is specialized but there is a good glossary at the back of the book that explains terms like "altricial--poorly developed at birth, usually with eyes and ears closed, often lacking hair, and requiring large amounts of parental care."

There is no need to rush out and apply for a scientific collecting permit and a set of traps, as the author includes detailed information on the identification of mammals by their signs and habits.For instance, the bog lemming feeds on grasses, rushes, and sedges and since the seed heads tend to be out of its reach, it snips the stems into evenly spaced lengths.This small mammal leaves other clues:"Piles of bright green [excreted] pellets and discarded plant clippings, all trimmed to about the same length, are indicative of bog lemming activity."Another visual:"[Their] runways interconnect feeding sites, toilet areas, and the nest."

"Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is both fun to browse and good for a straight read-through on a cold winter's weekend, when many of the local mammals are hibernating, or scampering through their cozy tunnels beneath the snow.

A Wonderful Book
This book is very well written and organized.It is written in a way that the typical nature lover can understand and avoids the technical words that must of us don't comprehend.Its moderate size makes it easy to carry with you, and the photos are extremely helpful in identifying mammals of the region. It is truly a bargain at this price, compared with other field guides that cover the entire continent and give substantially less information on each animal.

Good Product
Good book, useful, and essential for students and scientists interested to work with mammals.

without doubt Wilson and Reeder's book is THE source of information for people looking for mammals in museums and old scientific publications. the superb listing of synonyms, the listings of the scientist describing the clades, and the brief biogeographic notes makes this book invaluable for people having any taxonomic question. The main attitude seems to be one of splitters, giving a lot of specific names to various populations others consider a single species, the biogeography can be a little more detailed, but there is no other source with that thoroughness and completeness in mammalian taxonomy.

Awesome book
I bought this book for my Marine Mammals class and I love it. I usually don't keep my books at the end of the term, but I think this one's a keeper. It's really interesting and it's smaller than most text books so it's easy to read. It came really fast, within a couple of days with the standard shipping that was like $3.00. I bought 2 books for this class and saved $30.00 from what the school book store would have charged. Good deal.

Fantastic!!
This book is a really great find. It goes through the evolution of cetaceans and pinnapeds. It uses some wild termanology but they are all defined for you. It covers every aspect of marine mammal evolution. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in whales and dolhpins or seals and sea lions.

Great for research papers and essays!For any age!
I've been reading this book aloud to my children for about a week.The little children can do about 4 animals at a time and then need a break.The older kids want me to keep reading!


The photos are absolutely beautiful!

excellent supplement for a mammal study
This year, as we're planning to study Land Mammals, I thought this book would make a great supplement to our science studies once again, and I was not disappointed.

About the Sea Creatures book, I said:

" . . . a full-page picture (in full color) on the left hand side, and an information page on the right.In addition to the information, each page also contains a box with extra information about each creature, such as scientific name, length, weight, life span, special design features, and a "did you know?" fact.The color pictures are real photographs, and are bright and eye-catching.The information is easy to read, yet very informative and interesting."

That same description holds true for the Magnificent Mammals book as well.Some other things that I like about this book are the fact that they don't just share about common, everyday mammals; but, instead, include some more unfamiliar mammals such as the two-toed sloth and the echidna.The back of the book contains an appendix with sketches of each mammal's footprint and a handy-dandy glossary of terms.

I've come to expect quality, educational products from Master Books and New Leaf Publishing.I can trust them to include God and Creationism, which is something I really appreciated when using books to educate my children.The very first paragraph in the introduction by the authors sums it up perfectly:

"It seems that no matter what book about wildlife we read, God isn't even mentioned. Wildlife programs are full of indoctrination in evolution. This book erases all evolutionary concepts and gives God the glory for His creation."

Anyone who would criticize this book as "non-scientific" needs to "INSPECT what they EXPECT" and be careful to back up their view point with true facts, not just empty words.

Fiction shelved with Fact .... Oops!
If you're looking for a non-fiction book about mammals, this is not for you.Although this title is classified as juvenile literature (non-fiction), it belongs on a religion shelf beside stories about Noah and Adam & Eve.From a scientific perspective, it's a bit scary and provides a disservice to American youth interested in pure science.

Nice Book from a Creation Viewpoint
This is a wonderful book that surveys thirty different mammals.Each page spread includes a quality photo of the animal being discussed, as well as a box containing some basic information (classification, size, life span), a special (Creationism) design feature, and an interesting fact about the animal.The introduction includes a brief discussion of some problems with evolutionary theory, and observations of how specific animals show intelligent design, however these observations are included throughout the book for each animal covered.

The main text of each page flows nicely, making the pages a little more readable than the typical fact book.In looking at each animal, it is not always as clear what region of the world the animals come from, however most of the animals are easily recognizable (for adults or older children).The book is not indexed, but the table of contents is sufficient for finding the animals you wish to read about.There is also a neat little appendix with footprint sketches of some of the animals, a glossary of animal-related terms used in the book, and a bibiliography.

Although I like Pocket Factfiles: Mammals better for variety, I appreciate the Creation viewpoint of this book, and the steady reflection of animals as products of intelligent (and very creative!) design.Because it has less detail than other animal fact books, I would use this book with younger (elementary/middle grade)children, those looking particularly for a Creation perspective, or someone with a particular interest in animals. ... A must have volume to complement Volume I. Although this volume is rather expensive, it is worth the money in terms of the amount of information given,illustrations of skeletal material, and illustrative restorations.

A MUST for every mammalian paleontologist!
In the editorial review - all stated is very true and extremely useful for any researcher studying the biostratigraphy and evolutionary trends of the mammalian groups within this volume (hopefully volume 2 is coming...someday!).HOWEVER, it is imperative that one double check references, statements, timelines, etc., with collaborating information on the group studied in detail as I have found some errors.Also, please note that each chapter is written by the "specialist" of that group...but not all mammalian paleontologists will agree to their overview.Ahh...the wonders and joys of academia!I am extremely pleased that each chapter on the groups of mammals discussed are organized the same way, thus allowing for consistency and aid in reference localities that may be applicable to several groups of mammals.Another pertinent point to remember is that this type of study is never stagnant as new information regarding fossil finds in new strata and/or localities can constrict or expand the timelines for particular genera, as I have found with the Oligocene fossils found within the White River Badlands, particularly within the Orellan and Whitneyan "NALMAs."Other researchers focused on particular groups would state the same.Nevertheless, this is an excellent starting point for graduate students and other researchers - a must have reference book.Publication references for each chapter appear thorough, it has an excellent index and a decent locality database for each state.Additional information within this tome is also very useful, particularly background data for the various geological times during the Cenozoic. For me, price is definitely not an issue in regards to the information garnered from this book (in addition to the quality of the paper and binding) and now that a paperback is available, it is definitely more affordable for the poor graduate student.I am sure that this book will be updated in the future as new information is published in reputable journals over the years.Janis, Scott and Jacobs have done an excellent job as editors with the enormous task compiling information from the authors in a timely manner so as to get this volume published.If you are a mammalian paleontologist or one that studies the Cenozoic, this is definitely a book to have in your library.

Volume Two is out!It is every bit as good as Volume 1 and covers many of the smaller mammalian taxa that are better used for climatic conditions over time.Nevertheless having both volumes will aid vertebrate paleontologists in finding references, understanding taxon relationships, and immigration/extinction/other events worthy in the field of mammalian paleontology.Again the quality of the book itself (binding, pages) is worth its price...it is a definite plus in my library!

Excellent guide
I purchased this guide for my husband (a newly-minted whale naturalist with the American Cetacean Society) on the recommendation of one of their instructors. He is very pleased with it. On a practical level, it is water resistant and has beautiful pictures which can be easily shared with folks on the whale-watch boat.

Absolutely essential for anyone interested in sea mammals
For a long time I have been searching for guides to help identify whales and dolphins in different parts of the world, but until recently there was very little practically-oriented literature available. In the last few years, that has changed and several groundbreaking regional identification guides are now available: for example Whales and Dolphins of the European Atlantic (Ocean Guides) and Whales & Dolphins of the North American Pacific: Including Seals and Other Marine Mammals. So the non-specialist or casual observer is now in with a fighting chance of identifying those dolphins seen on a coastal hike or whales encountered on a ferry crossing.

At the same time, several references on global marine mammals have appeared, of which Shirihai and Jarrett's compact guide is the best of the bunch. Why? First of all, this guide is compact. At under 400 pages, it is small enough to fit into a coat pocket, yet there is enough information to enable the user to identify (potentially) any marine mammal. So this volume is a true field guide. The book covers sirenians (manatees and dugongs), seals, coastal otters and other marine mammals as well as the cetaceans. The text is concise and emphasises key identification features, but there is still room for notes on behaviour and ecology. There are plenty of plates, both photographic and illustrated - all of them of very high quality. It is clear that author and artist have ample field experience have been able, through this book, to put this squarely at the disposal of the user. Finally, the book is printed on high quality glossy paper, which makes it a pleasure to leaf through at home.

So next time I am off on a trip with a chance of encountering whales or dolphins, I will be packing this handy guide in a addition to whatever regional guides I can get my hands on. Meanwhile, I am enjoying some armchair whale-watching as I leaf through the pages back home.

THE best field gude on this subject; and one of the best of any natural history field guide
There have been a plethora of field guides on marine mammals and most of them, including several recent ones, such as Carwardine's and the Welles', that are quite good. Shirihai and Jarrett's is in a class by itself.However, it is not really intended as a spotting guide for geographic locations.It illustrates and explains the different variations with all the species, has excellent and distinctive photgraphs,wonderful art work of all species and many variants, fine maps, tells of behavioral and diet diffences for various populations of the same species (and hints where there may be new species, or subspecies, to be found).It is the most comprehensive such guide on this, or almost any other, wildlife family and is at a bargain price, even if Amzn.com hasn't yet discounted it.Don't miss this book! ... This Eyewitness Book Looks at Mammals
This is yet another of the many Eyewitness Books volumes. This time, the focus is mammals. The book begins by noting that humans are among about 4,000 mammal species on earth. And what exactly is a mammal? The book notes that mammals have fur/hair, are warm-blooded, and feed milk to their young. The focus of this book? Author Steve Parker says that (Page 7): "This book sets out to explore the world of the mammals--what they look like, their body structure, evolution, breeding, habits, and behavior--and in so doing will hopefully cast some light on our place in this group."

The book begins by illustrating vividly the differences among mammals--by showing the skulls of many species, from rabbits to seals to aardvarks to shrews. There follows a brief discussion of the evolution of mammals and their diversification over time.

After that, subjects vary, from coats and fur to the use of tails to breeding to keeping clean and so on. The book closes with a fascinating discussion of "mammal detectives," people who use their knowledge of nature to better understand fellow mammals."Clues" include teeth, bones, furs caught on fences, and so on.

In short, another nice book for young readers--and their parents.

Great book on Mammals
This is a great book for someone who wants to be able to ID a lot of mammals. Nice drawings.

useful...but not enough visually
I'm a retired biologist and have owned this book since it first came out in 2002. It's a fine, compact yet comprehensive treatment of the mammals of North America, with one rather glaring exception. Other than for the marine mammals, any animal larger than a hare covered in this book is illustrated (painted) in a surprisingly amateurish way with few exceptions, in my view, and hardly worthy of a major natural history publisher like Princeton. This includes the cats, dogs, bears and hoofed mammals. Many of the smaller mammals, including bats, are rather beautifully portrayed. I don't mean any of these as comments as snobbery, but more as "they simply don't look this way in life." So to me it's neither particularly useful, nor accurate, and certainly not pleasurable for those of us who have worked with some of these mammals, and know a bit about their biology and beauty firsthand to see them portrayed in such an awkward manner. I applaud the many useful technical details offered in such a compact, well-organized field guide, but at the same time have found it a continual annoyance every time I open it to have to ignore the many unattractive illustrations of so many animals...and can only hope that the text material is accurate enough to counter such inadequacies.

So it's rather uneven in this way and needs to be significantly improved in any new edition in my view. But I would definitely like to own that better illustrated edition. Yet, before I purchase such a new edition, would want to first scan through it and see if these larger mammals are in fact more knowledgeably and sensitively portrayed...as they occur in the wild and close at hand.

Good enough for a fieldguide
Good illustrations, a couple of sentences about ecology per species. Broad topic, small book, does what it can.

A disappointment
I'd looked forward to this book for a long time, but now that it's here, I'm not so sure I'm going to get rid of my Burt and Grossenheider.My current favorites among the Rodentia--packrats and grasshopper mice--are painted so badly here as to be unrecognizable, as biologically accurate as Du"rer's rhinoceros but without anything like the artistic interest.What's really disappointing, though, is that with this book available, I can't imagine another mammal guide appearing for years to come.

Title and description are misleading and inaccurate
The last time I checked, North America includes Mexico.The book does not, as advertised, show illustrations of all species of North American mammals; species found only south of the Rio Grande are not included.Just once I would like to see a guide to North Ameican mammals that really covers all of North America. ... Great book on the fauna of a little-known region
This book can't be praised highly enough.
The text, the maps, and the illustrations all make it a great reference work. It is amazing to have a book of this quality on the mammals of New Guinea considering that there is nothing even aproaching this standard written about many more accessible parts of South East Asia.

Excellent resource
This is an excellent resource tool for anyone with a serious interest in African insectivores and or bats. The author provides detailed information, not found in most texts. The drawings are wonderful.
