Product Description
This text provides students with a solid understanding of the relationship between the structure, processing, and properties of materials. Authors Donald Askeland and Pradeep Fulay teach the fundamental concepts of atomic structure and materials behaviors and clearly link them to the "materials" issues that students will have to deal with when they enter the industry or graduate school (e.g. design of structures, selection of materials, or materials failures). While presenting fundamental concepts and linking them to practical applications, the authors emphasize the necessary basics without overwhelming the students with too much of the underlying chemistry or physics. The book covers fundamentals in an integrated approach that emphasizes applications of new technologies that engineered materials enable. New and interdisciplinary developments in materials field such as nanomaterials, smart materials, micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) systems, and biomaterials are also discussed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
I picked up this book to supplement my 6th grade Science curriculum and I feel it is a fabulous find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great opening into the world of science
This two-volume series is a great introduction to hundreds of simple scientific experiments, each involving modest materials that are easy to find and instructions that are easy to read, accompanied by friendly cartoon illustrations. The series seems to be written for children to read -- a precocious ten-year old should be able to do most of these experiments, although people of all ages will find these activities exciting and fun.

Adults can certainly use this book as a guide for science exploration -- you might want to read ahead and try some experiments in advance, to make sure the instructions make sense and get the intended results.Although the scientific principles are explained in general terms, the book is designed to keep the text to a minimum, so the scientific chatter is perhaps less thorough than some parents or teachers might like... If it's important, you can research the principles elsewhere had prepare more in-depth explanations using other sources of information. For the most part, though, these books are pretty brilliantly planned: the experiments are easy to reproduce and the scientific principles are mostly pretty self-evident.We've had a lot of fun using these books, and I'm sure you will as well... Highly recommended!(Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple is right, could be better
I would have given this 2.5 stars if possible. This review applies to all the books in this series, not just this particular one.The book's strengths:(1)Truly simple experiments that make science fun and give it a "Wow" factor for children.Everybody can follow the simple instructions in this book.(2)Seeing science done with ordinary objects takes science out of the elite laboratory and puts it into context of everyday life.(3)Even adults can learn so much about how everyday items and phenomena are related to science.

The book's weaknesses:(1)Explanations of the science behind the experiments are too brief and vague.(2)For too many of the experiments the directions are incomplete at best, and sometimes just not adequate at all.The big majority of the experiments will work, but for the several that don't, the teacher/parent is left saying, 'What went wrong?"You can follow all the directions perfectly, but poor directions don't make an experiment work.Sometimes it's an issue of needing more detail, but sometimes it's an issue of the directions themselves not working, no matter how much detail would have been given. For example, the directions for making Rock Candy (to see the shape of sugar crystal growth) are ludicrous. They wouldn't work no matter how hard you tried. But, the directions for making salt crystals are just fine, and we have some beautiful cubic salt crystals to see now.

Overall,I like these books.I'm very glad to have such easy-to-put-together and fun experiments for us to do at home.But...I'm always prepared for something to backfire, I read with a discriminating eye and the benefit of an extensive science background, and if an experiment promises to deliver something "too cool" with simple instructions, I always search the net first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for younger students
I am a science teacher and I use this book every year for 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th graders. It helps them learn while enjoying what they are learning. This book can even be used to do demonstrations when introducing a topic to older students.

1-0 out of 5 stars Motor experiment is wrong
My wife got this book when homeschooling and my daughter picked out the motor experiment. We followed the directions but could not get the motor to work. After looking at the design I realized the armature winding was incorrect. The winding must go around the cork in parallel with the axis, not around the axis. Needless to say a child trying to build this would be extremely frustrated. I have a feeling the author did not build all the experiments. The lack of explanation of how the motor works is also a drawback. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Edition
I ordered the 5th edition of a book and the seller sent me the 3rd edition. After some back and forth the seller finally refunded my money. They did send the book quickly but did not have the best customer service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Materials Science and Engineering 2nd Edition
I've been having this book for many years by now, probably over 10 years. However, the contents of the book relates truly to the title, "Foundations of Materials Science and Engineering." The information contained here in this book helps the reader to establish at least a basic, but not limited, knowledge in what the Materials Engineering is all about. Of course, there has been many more R&D and new materials processes developed in the materials engineering world since the 2nd edition of this book, but there are many things about materials in this book that will never change. The newer version contains an update with the latest in Research & Technology Development as well as new materials processes and treatment. I, myself just bought a copy of the newest version, 5th Edition, to stay tuned with the latest in Materials Engineering as I have a Master's degree in Materials Engineering. Also, is good to learn about materials because everything in this world is done using materials, without materials nothing get done, and sometimes you may wonder what materials are made out many of the households goods, surgical equipment, electronics, vehicles, and etc. The series of these books can help you understand it a little bit better.

3-0 out of 5 stars errors a problem...
Generally clear explanations, but errors given in some of the examples made times extremely frustrating. Errata on companion website is no help either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable
The book is in OK condition. The seller didn't state that it was written in, nor did they state the extent of the corner damage.Nevertheless, still perfectly readable and acceptable. It would have just been nice to be notified of its minor damages before purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
It is a good book to start material science. The first chapter a good overview and has interesting insight to get the reader interested in material science and engineering. However, I feel in the second chapter it goes too far back into detail about atoms, electron clouds, quantum numbers and things of that sort. Just seems like stuff from a general chemistry book rather than a material science book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing
This book is mainly a re-hash of Prof. Gordon's "The New Science of Strong Materials or Why You Don't Fall through the Floor", withmore pictures and some new annecdotes.
As I already owned the above-mentionned work, this book was a disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant book
Though this book like its stablemate on Strong Materials was written some time ago I think it should be essential background reading for all teachers of science and engineering.
The writer has a real gift of making quite difficult subjects interesting, and with humourous though relevant asides. Professor Gordon had wide experience in many fields and this shows... even people with no mathematical knowledge can read with profit... especially interesting is the section on how accidents happen, sometimes when a person with insufficient technical knowledge tries to "strengthen" a structure and ends up by weakening it. See for instance the WWI Fokker D8 monoplane and the heating vessels towards the end of the book.
The writer also explores the strengths of natural creatures (see "How to design a Worm")
    Compulsive reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is glass fragile and not steel?
I used to beleve that questions like that are not possible to answer without mathematics and advanced physics. Gordondoes it, and he does it very good. If you like aha-experiences, read this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Have not yet received book
Have not received book yet, I am still waiting after two months. Have not heard back from vendor yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date reference book by well-regarded experts in the field, but not a textbook
This book is widely used for grad-level biomaterials courses and for a good reason: it is a compilation of the forefronts of biomaterials research, including chapters written by well-regarded experts in the field. Any biomaterials researcher can look through the list of contributors and tell you that almost every single one listed is a big name when it comes to biomaterials conferences. As such, the material is presented in a way that will benefit someone who's reading it for background or reference to projects in academic research/industrial R&D.

This is a very heavy book materials-wise, and is NOT for anyone who is looking to have an easy, leisurely nighttime read. The topics may seem disconnected for the unprepared. For example, out of the entire "Types of Biomaterials" unit, there are individual chapters on hydrogels, metallic biomaterials, inorganic biomaterials, etc that took up maybe a good 200 pages, and it's almost difficult to go from one chapter to the next in one sitting and take it on like you would a textbook. For more of a structured textbook, you may want to refer to a book by Temenoff and Mikos published recently.

Instead, this book is more of a fixture in the reference shelf of any biomaterials researcher. It is one that you pick up and read a few chapters out of depending on what you're planning on running experiments and furthering the field of. If you treat this book more as a reference book than a textbook, then you will find the reasons why it deserves 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An applied use
Not a product for the new biomaterialist.Recommended for persons in the field or planning to enter the field. Chapters are complete, concise and detailed allowing for quick analysis. The book is organized very cleanly and permits one to use either as a reference or as an in depth reference on the subject.Solid for use in lab. ... It is the best material book I have ever seen. Clear and easy to read. Very good for beginners who want to study material. The disadvantage is that the book is not deep enough if you want to know more about details of some topics, like XRD. Generally the book give you the basic idea about the material, very good!

This is a well organized book with plenty of pictures, diagrams, and examples. I found it to be concise and informative, however, it's material price data is from 1998.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation, simple to follow
This book pertains to the class I am taking for Mechanical Engineering: Material Science

The subject and material of this class is not very difficult and easy to understand. This book starts you off on some of the basics in chemistry of how bonds and energy play an impact of a microscopic level in materials. It works its way up to dislocations, stress and strain, failure, etc.

The explanations in this book goes step by step and is easy to follow. There are plenty of pictures to go along with and the examples are great. There is even online material from the Wiley website to test your knowledge and provide conceptual assistance.

The previous version of this book is very similar to this version (3rd). If you are required to buy this book but have the old one, then you may not need it. Verify with your professor before hand.

Overall, this book is pretty decent. The subject doesn't require much derivation or computing. It's a lot of memorization and conceptual thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This book is just the bible for the stress analyst working with composites.
A must have at your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
I own the original edition of this text.I borrowed a colleague's copy of the second edition to review before buying my own copy.It didn't take me long to decide that the new edition was an essential purchase. This is THE text to buy if you have an interest in composites.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, no value
I'm a final-semester senior at the University of Kentucky in Mechanical Engineering and I purchased this book as required reading for my composites class. Here's the thing:the book doesn't really say that much of anything. It spends all of its time stating equations for particular types of composites without specifying why it's doing it or how it got from equation to equation. As a matter of fact, all the chapter-end review questions seem to be are "hey, bet you can't figure out how we got from equation 4.56 to equation 4.57."It makes for somewhat easier homework because it's simple algebra and trig most of the time, but what am I learning, exactly?I usually try to justify books like this as saying, well, at least maybe I'll use it as a reference book in the future...but this book's just horrible.I would recommend you not buy this unless it's required of you for any particular class.Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I find this book to be a very handy reference.Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented. The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat.Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book but not for electronics at all
This is an in depth book about Li battery chemistry. Probably very good. But it is not "everything about Li batteries" as it only covers chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough and well written text with widespread appeal to all technologists
This reference work will prove invaluable for everyone involved with lithium-ion batteries. This includes research students, product developers, and cell and battery manufacturers to list but a few. It is logically laid out, starting with the fundamentals, written by experts from the disciplines of chemistry, physics and materials science.

Following the in-depth coverage of the science and technology of anodes, cathodes and electrolytes the book seamlessly moves on to the engineering topics of battery applications. These too are divided into groups such as electric vehicles, spacecraft, and medical applications.

The academic will appreciate the multitude of references to scientific journals; the engineer will appreciate the clear explanations of difficult topics in battery chemistry, often aided by clear and informative diagrams and pictures; the technologist can follow the evolution of lithium-ion batteries from the laboratory to the final application.

This book is an excellent technical reference book that belongs in every lithium-ion battery company library. Individuals put off by the price should be patient and wait for the paperback edition to be released. Either way this is a lithium-ion boffin's must-have.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
This unified approach to polymer materials science is divided in three major sections:

Basic Principles - covering historical background, basic material properties, molecular structure, and thermal properties of polymers
Influence of Processing on Properties - tying processing and design by discussing rheology of polymer melts, mixing and processing, the development of anisotropy, and solidification processes.
Engineering Design Properties - covering the different properties that need to be considered when designing a polymer component - from mechanical properties to failure mechanisms, electrical properties, acoustic properties, and permeability of polymers. The first edition was praised for the vast number of graphs and data that can be used as a reference. A new table in the appendix containing material property graphs for several polymers further strengthens this attribute. A new chapter introducing polymers from a historical perspective not only makes the topic less dry, but it also provides a chance to shade light on the role polymers played, for better and for worse, while shaping today's industrial world. The most important change made to this edition is the introduction of real-world examples and a variety of problems at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

    Product Description
Are You Looking for a Unified and Concise Approach to Teaching and Learning the Structure of Materials? Allen and Thomas present information in a manner consistent with the way future scientists and engineers will be required to think about materials' selection, design, and use. Students will learn the fundamentals of three different states of condensed matter-glasses, crystals, and liquid crystals-and develop a set of tools for describing all of them. Above all, they'll gain a better understanding of the principles of structure common to all materials. Key concepts, such as symmetry theory, are introduced and applied to provide a common viewpoint for describing structures of ceramic, metallic, and polymeric materials. Structure-sensitive properties of real materials are introduced. The text also includes a variety of worked example problems. Other texts available in the MIT Series: Thermodynamics of Materials, Vol I, Ragone, 30885-4 Thermodynamics of Materials, Vol II: Kinetics, Ragone, 30886-2 Physical Ceramics: Principles for Ceramics Science and Engineering, Chiang, Birnie, Kingery, 59873-9 Electronic Properties of Engineering Materials, Livingston, 31627-X ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Structure of Materials (MIT Series in MSE)
I had an opportunity to use this text book in one of my classes and found the material within the book confusing for the most part. There are NOT many examples worked out following the explanations of complex equations and their applications -- I feel this leads to a rather limited understanding of important concepts.I recommend looking elsewhere for a crystallography book if you have an option. ...
