Book Description

Program Evaluation and Performance Measurement: An Introduction to Practice offers a conceptual, as well as practical, introduction to program evaluation and performance measurement for public and non-profit organizations. This introductory text discusses topics in a detailed fashion, making it a useful guide for practitioners who are constructing and implementing performance measurement systems, as well as for students. Authors James C. McDavid and Laura R. L. Hawthorn guide readers through conducting quantitative and qualitative program evaluations and needs assessments, as well as constructing and implementing performance measurement systems.

Key Features:

  • Highlights the importance of sound professional judgment throughout the book and the final chapter offers ways that evaluation professionals can develop their professional judgment
  • Integrates performance measurement into evaluation practice to demonstrate how these skills are important foundations for performance measurement and essential for building program evaluation expertise
  • Discusses the realities of organizational politics and balances the importance of good evaluation methods with the resource and organizational constraints that almost always affect the choices evaluators make as they do their work
  • Provides reader friendly checklists to underscore key points

Program Evaluation and Performance Measurement is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in program evaluation, performance measurement, and performance management. The book does not assume a thorough understanding of research methods and design, making it an ideal text for students in Public Administration and Management, Social Work, the health professions, and other disciplines where research methods are not a central focus.

The book is complemented by an Instructor's CD-ROM to facilitate effective classroom use. ... Read more

Book Description
Its been over a decade since the first edition of Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models splashed onto the scene, and research in the field has certainly not cooled in the interim. In fact, quite the opposite has occurred. As a result, Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models: A Modern Perspective, Second Edition has been revamped and extensively updated to offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of measurement error models currently available.

Whats new in the Second Edition?

· Greatly expanded discussion and applications of Bayesian computation via Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques

· A new chapter on longitudinal data and mixed models

· A thoroughly revised chapter on nonparametric regression and density estimation

· A totally new chapter on semiparametric regression

· Survival analysis expanded into its own separate chapter

· Completely rewritten chapter on score functions

· Many more examples and illustrative graphs

· Unique data sets compiled and made available online

In addition, the authors expanded the background material in Appendix A and integrated the technical material from chapter appendices into a new Appendix B for convenient navigation. Regardless of your field, if youre looking for the most extensive discussion and review of measurement error models, then Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models: A Modern Perspective, Second Edition is your ideal source. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars another difficult topic in regression analysis tackled by Ray Carroll
Ray Carroll and David Ruppert are well known research statisticians who have published many joint articles on regression, weighted regression and transformation and they have also written an excellent book together on this research topic. Stefanski has recently published several papers on measurement error models with Carroll. Here they have teamed up to write a statistics text on a unique topic. Measurement error models are common and practical when dealing with covariates that have measurement error. Least squares estimation in linear regression is based on the assumption that the predictor variables are measured without error. There are many articles and an excellent text by Fuller "Measurement Error Models", published by Wiley in 1988 that deals with the linear case. Also look at a section in Chapter 5 of Miller's "Beyond ANOVA, Basics of Applied Statistics" that refers to the problem as the error in variables problem. For the nonlinear case this is the first treatment. Well written and well documented, this text provides an up-to-date account of the theory and methods and provides real applications (e.g. the Framingham Heart Study). This is a great reference as are many of the other monographs in this series by Chapman and Hall/CRC Press. Includes bootstrap approaches in the chapter on fitting methods and models.

Book Description
Today's competitive environment requires that companies distinguish themselves in the marketplace using factors other than prices.Companies that excel at on-time delivery, short cycle/leadtime, quality, and fast response to the market gain a competitive edge - and have the ability to market based on these features. A proven approach to achieve this is the Theory of Constraints (TOC) production solution known, as drum-buffer-rope scheduling. Just in time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM) and other philosophies aim at exploiting these competitive edge factors. However, accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurements continue to be the biggest stumbling blocks to companies wishing to improve their financial performance with these tools. Agreement on the need for a measurement system that encourages local actions in line with bottom line results is common, but solutions have remained elusive. Whether a company is pursuing JIT, TQM, or TOC, cost accounting is the common enemy. Attempts have been made to introduce "new" costing methods such as activity based costing and economic value added, but they have failed to recognize the basic difference between product costing for financial statement purposes and collective management information to make real time decisions. The Measurement Nightmare shows you how to resolve the conflicts and remove the accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurement roadblocks to adopting TOC, thereby gaining improved performance and sustaining competitive advantage. The techniques that the author, leading authority Debra Smith, has implemented and tracked at various companies highlight "the productivity measurement nightmare". Especially important are the day-to-day tools she developed to ensure successful implementation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Debra Smith
Debra knows and applies TOC as well as anyone including Goldratt. This book is still a key part to understanding TOC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but stack it with others...
This is a grate book that explains how measurment indicators might confuse management, and make mistakes that really happen in buissness. In states several measurment indicators based on TOC that help in understanding what should be done in the company.

Very good book, but if you want to learn about TOC, you should stack it with other TOC books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TOC book
Debra has done a nice job with this book.I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Theory of Constraints.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Material - Difficult Read
This is an excellent book if you are serious about TOC.It covers the basic how-to subjects currently in the liturature, and goes into new territory showing how to reconcile Management/Throughput Accounting with GAAP Acounting.Despite the great material I have two complaints: 1) The book is difficult to read due to the small font and wordy style2) The book fails to recognize the existance of Lean Manufacturing and Six-Sigma tools that could break the dilemia presented about sprint capacity and buffer size. The second issue is one that any experience practitioner of Lean/6-sigma will easily recognise and correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to the core of the problem
The book focusses on the root problem behind all those dysfunctional metrics around us. It explains very clearly (also for people not trained in financial jargon) how the wrong focus on the wrong metrics in the top of the organization can have impact on the complete organization and may impact negatively the quality of decisions throughout the company.

Very much recommended! ... Read more

Book Description

"If a student researcher had only one handbook on their bookshelf, Miller and Salkind's Handbook would certainly have to be it. With the updated material, the addition of the section on ethical issues (which is so well done that I'm recommending it to the departmental representative to the university IRB), and a new Part 4 on "Qualitative Methods", the new Handbook is an indispensable resource for researchers."
--
Dan Cover, Department of Sociology, Furman University

" I have observed that most instructors want to teach methodology "their way" to imbue the course with their own approach; Miller-Salkind allows one to do this easily. The book is both conceptually strong (e.g., very good coverage of epistemology, research design and statistics) and at the same time provides a wealth of practical knowledge (scales, indices, professional organizations, computer applications, etc.) In addition, it covers the waterfront of methodology."
--
Michael L. Vasu, Director of Information Technology, North Carolina State University

"A unique and excellent reference tool for all social science researchers, and a good textbook for graduate students and senior year undergraduate classes. These students are about to enter the real life of research, and need a handy and comprehensive tool as a starting point that offers shortcuts for getting into real research projects. For a small project, the book offers enough information to get the project started. For big projects, the book is ideal for information on where to look for things and examples."
--
Jianhong Liu, Department of Sociology, Rhode Island College

The book considered a "necessity" by many social science researchers and their students has been revised and updated while retaining the features that made it so useful. The emphasis in this new edition is on the tools graduate students and more advanced researchers need to conduct high quality research.

Features/Benefits:

  • Provides step-by-step instruction for students research training by beginning with how to find a creative idea, a middle-range theory, and initial hypothesis and proceeds through design, proposal, collection and analysis of data followed by writing, reporting and publication
  • Section on scales and indices are organized so that readers can quickly locate and find the type of scale or index in which they may be interested
  • All sections are now followed by useful and well-considered reference sections so that readers can read more about each topic
  • Includes updated coverage on new scales, internal and external validity, and new analytic techniques with extensive references on each
  • Presents extensive coverage of how to prepare manuscripts for publication, including a list of all journals covered by Sociological Abstracts along with the editorial office address and URL for each entry
  • Discusses the importance of policy research with presentation and discussion of specific models as an adjunct to both applied and basic research techniques
  • Provides extensive coverage of funding opportunities including those offered by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and a directory of private funding sources including relevant contact information

New to this edition:

  • New Part 4 by John Creswell and Ray Maietta provides a comprehensive introduction to qualitative methods including a review of existing computer applications for collecting and analyzing data
  • New and more current reviews and commentaries have replaced dated or no longer relevant excerpts
  • Thousands of new references on the assessment of important sociological variables as well as references to such topics as statistical analysis, computer applications, and specific topics
  • Thoroughly updated information on the use of computers and online research techniques, including beginning and intermediate material about the Internet and its use by the modern research scientist
  • Coherent and thoughtful review of the most popular statistical analysis software packages
  • New guidelines and discussion of ethical practices in social and behavioral science research, including extensive coverage of institutional review board procedures and activities
  • Expansion of social indicators to include international coverage

Plus, there is an extensive and well-organized table of contents with four levels of headings; and, for the first time in the history of the book, a comprehensive index.

Book Description
Going into its eighth edition, this book is a classic in the field of educational measurement. It was written from the point of view of the classroom teacher to answer the question, "What does a teacher need to know about the development and evaluation of educational measures and assessments?"This book fosters an understanding of how assessment and instruction are interrelated. It also cultivates learning the techniques and skills needed to develop tests and other evaluation procedures (e.g. portfolios), as well as teaches students to understand how to evaluate the validity and reliability of tests. Unlike many books in educational measurement, this book also gives readers what they need to know to properly interpret the results from standardized achievement and scholastic aptitude tests. Topics include: test reliability and validity; meaning and application of the norms; extraneous factors that influence performance of cognitive tests; the development of educational measures; and more. 4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Software Measurement
This is a good solid presentation of the subject that gives a good overview of the several types of approaches to measurement. While I would prefer that the subject matter also focused on software engineering as well, it does a good job of what it was created to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward and easy to read
This is a good read for anyone thinking about employing metrics for software projects.I have read several books and articles on metrics, software and program managment, in the last 6 months and this one of the few which was worth reading.Text is easy to read and the message and methods are presented in a straight forward manner. No, you will not find any amazing breakthoughs in software project managment in this book. What you will find is a good foundation for adding metrics which add value to software program management.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for Software Measurement Programs
I would rate this book ****** if it were possible. If you are looking for material on how to start a "software metrics program", look no further. This is the ultimate reference on software measurement initiatives. The PSM method is compatible with the CMMI (Measurement & Analysis Process Area) and the foundation for the ISO/IEC 15939 standard. All of the authors are recognized authorities in software measurement and process improvement. Dr. Barry Boehm (COCOMO author) has written the foreword. The PSM process is sponsored by the DoD and the U.S. Army. The book itself is comprehensive, well-written, and easy to read. It provides ready-to-use templates such as "Measurement Construct Template", "Project Measurement Plan Outline", and "Data Verification Checklist". Chapter outline:

1 - Measurement: Key Concepts and Practices
2 - Measurement Information Model
3 - Plan Measurement
4 - Perform Measurement
5 - Analysis Techniques
6 - Evaluate Measurement
7 - Establish and Sustain Commitment
8 - Measure for Success
Appendix A - Measurement Construct Examples
Appendix B - Information System Case Study
Appendix C - Synergy Integrated Copier Case Study

Note: Appendix A provides 14 detailed, complete examples of measurement constructs ("metrics"). Appendixes B and C provide 2 comprehensive case studies (approximately 60 pages).

It would require at least a 2-day workshop to address all the information provided by this book (probably at 10 times its price). You can't afford to miss it if you are more than casually interested in software measurement. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Off-the-shelf processes for CMMM level 3 and above orgs
There is a wealth of material available from the PSM site, including the PSM Insight application and PSM Guidebook. However this book is not redundant because it is structured as a clearly written introduction to practical software measurement, that includes excellent guidance for implementing it into your organization. In addition, the 304 pages that comprise this book manages to convey the information contained in the existing PSM documentation, and does so much more succinctly.

I found the most valuable parts of this book to be the clearly described measurement model, and the way the authors distinguish between data that is useful to projects and organizational data collection and analysis. This material places PSM in context and is a sound starting point for an organizational SQA initiative.

The case studies reinforces the mechanics of PSM, and also contain advice and pointers for implementing enterprise-wide measurement.Although I've been following the PSM initiative almost since its inception and have read all of the copious materials available, I still gained much from this book.If you're establishing an SQA function or striving for CMM level 4 or above you'll find this book invaluable. The URLs provided will lead to even more material, including a free Windows-based software tool that fully supports the practical software measurement process. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away
This book is just terrible. No examples, unrelated problems, and poorly written text is all you will find.

Example: One question asks you to refer to you 'basic vibration textbook' to find out how to do the problem (as they do not explain in the book). What is the point of questions like this?

Also many times you will find yourself staring in awe at the wording in this book. There are many sentences written so poorly that they simply have no meaning.

1-0 out of 5 stars pathetic
This book is absolutely useless for college level students. It DOES NOT explains problems in detail and you would have to spend hours in understanding what they are trying to do.
Absolutely CRAPY book. I WONT recomment this to anyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Great NEW edition
The authors, in their new 6th edition of Mechanical Measurements, have overhauled most of the book. The new edition is much improved and makes great reference book for various measurement techniques.Very well-indexed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Keeping
This text provides a good, basic overview of methods for measuring several physical phenomena. The treatment of most of these is average. However, thermal measurement is given an improved, more thorough coverage.Personally, I have primarily used this text as a reference and guide for Chapter 3: Assessing and Presenting Experimental Data.I have found the sections on Error and, especially, Uncertainty to be very instructive and practical for use during college and post-graduation (as a mechanical engineer in research and development).

2-0 out of 5 stars Try another measurements book.
This book was assigned to me as part of a college mechanical engineering course. This book was hard to follow and strayed from the course description. It contains aspects of electronics and mechanical design where the math problems are not fully explained and worked out and the machine descriptions are extremely brief. It is possible to get an education out this book, but a person would really have to strain. If you buy this book, I recommend that you get a generic study guide to accompany it. ... Book Description
Helping students develop an understanding of important mathematical ideas is a persistent challenge for teachers. In this book, one of a three-volume set, well-known mathematics educators Margaret Smith, Edward A. Silver, and Mary Kay Stein provide teachers of mathematics the support they need to improve their instruction. They focus on ways to engage upper elementary, middle school, and high school students in thinking, reasoning, and problem solving to build their mathematics understanding and proficiency. The content focus of Volume Three is geometry and measurement.

Each volume in the set features:
* Cases from urban, middle school classrooms with ethnically, racially, and linguistically diverse student populations. Each case illustrates an instructional episode in the classroom of a teacher who is implementing standards-based instruction.
* The teachers' perspective, including their thoughts and actions as they interact with students and with key aspects of mathematical content.
* Cognitively challenging mathematics activities that are built around samples of authentic classroom practice.
* Facilitation chapters to help professional developers "teach" the cases, including specific guidelines for facilitating discussions and suggestions for connecting the ideas presented in the cases to a teacher's own practice.

As a complete set, this resource provides a basis on which to build a comprehensive, professional development program to improve mathematics instruction and student learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Practical Operational Measurements Guide
This book is vastly superior to any other I have read on the subject of measurements. One gets the impression that Will Kaydos definitely knows whereof he speaks. Early in the book, Kaydos provides a measurement model that is applicable to any kind of process and at any level - organisational, process, functional or individual. Several realistic examples permeate the book and two detailed case studies in the appendices add immensely to the value the reader can derive from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in my personal reference library
This is one of a handful of books on performance metrics I recommend to peers and clients. The author starts with one of the most cogent set of reasons for measuring performance that I've read. These reasons are compelling, reinforced with realistic examples, and clearly articulated. He then briefly discusses the art and science of measurement, and associated standards, techniques and methods. I especially liked his "Measuring the Unmeasurable" advice, which knocks down mental barriers and shows how you can, indeed, measure indicators that you may think are unmeasurable.

The approach he sets out is systematic and encompasses performance measurement in not only manufacturing, but in services and sales. In fact, Appendix C, "Implementing a Formal Selling Process", shows just how wide the scope of this book is.I've worked in technical pre-sales support and was thoroughly impressed with his approach.

Among the aspects of this book I especially like are the techniques he explains, the way you are lead through the development of an effective measurement system by identifying what to measure, implementing the system, analysis and interpretation, and actionable use of performance measures. Moreover, the way the author knits together a system based on multiple perspectives, taking into account strategic, customer, departmental and company-wide views is insightful.I also like the chapter on ensuring measures are showing an accurate picture, and the benchmarking information in Appendix A, "What Some Leading Companies are Measuring".

In my opinion this is a "must-have" book for anyone involved in operations, process improvement, or who has P&L responsibilities and wants to manage by fact - the right facts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful guide
The book features procedures for identifying what to measure and specific steps readers can take to determine what to measure. It's a useful guide for figuring out what to measure for a specific organizational need, but requires some knowledge of measurement terminology. While I found it a useful guide as a performance and scorecard consultant, some of my clients found it a bit daunting. Good models and examples throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent approach for those who wish to start OPM
Will Kaydos did actually a very good work. This book addresses to top management officers who wish to change to a more customer orientated approach and implement Performance Measurement in every aspect of their business. Well structured and easy to read with significant information on effective management. There are no equations or weird stuff in this book, because the author wishes to explain the core of this subject: how to implement performance measurementeverywhere. This is a great book for industrial engineers, CEO's, Sales Managers, HR managers, Quality assurance officers and anyone involving with performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for those committed to business improvement.
A terrific business improvement reference applicable to a wide range of business and their operations.Consultants and managers will especially value Kaydos' insights into the role of metrics in supporting culture change. The case studies are well chosen with clearly presentedimplementation examples and informative detail.

"OperationalPerformance Measurement" is a must read if you are committed toimproving your business or the business of your clients. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Dimensional Measurement
This book is not for the average reader. It uses extremely technical terms to convey simple expressions. Explanations such as thread concepts were over stated and confusing. I returned my copy.
