Product Description
The second edition of this internationally acclaimed title is the ideal handbook for those involved in conducting epidemiological research. The objective of most epidemiological studiesis to relate exposure to putative causalagents to the occurrence of a particular disease. The achievement of this objective depends critically on accurate measurement of exposure. This book reviews principles and techniques that can be applied to measuring a wide range of exposures, including demographic, behavioral, medical, genetic, and environmental factors. The book covers questionnaire design, conducting personal interviews, abstracting information from medical records, use of proxy respondents, and ascertainingbiological and environmental measurements. It gives a comprehensive account of measurement error and the estimation of its effects, and the design, analysis, and interpretation of validity and reliability studies. Emphasis is given to the ways in which the validity of measurements can be increased. Techniques to maximize participation of subjects in epidemiological studies are discussed, and ethical issues relevant to exposure measurement are outlined. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is the second edition of the well-known Psychological Assessment of Adult Posttraumatic States, published in 1997. A major update from the first edition, it presents a detailed, yet practical summary of the major issues and instruments involved in the assessment of posttraumatic disturbance. Dr. Briere analyzes the types of traumas most likely to produce long-term difficulties. He also explains the biological, historical, social, and cultural factors that mediate between trauma and outcome. New research on traumatic events, including rape, stalking, sex trafficking, torture, terrorist attacks, motor vehicle accidents, and disasters, is placed into clinical context. Especially relevant to the clinician, researcher, and forensic specialist, this second edition reviews the available research on standardized measures currently available for evaluating trauma's impact, noting the psychometric characteristics of each instrument. A comprehensive review of new trauma-relevant measures is provided, emphasizing their direct clinical relevance to the assessment of posttraumatic states. In addition, frequently used general psychological tests get a critical look from the trauma assessment perspective. Dr. Briere also makes new recommendations for the composition of trauma-related test batteries that can be customized to fit the clinical question and the time available for assessment. New to the second edition is additional information on the complex process of psychodiagnosis, including coverage of research and controversies in acute stress disorder, brief psychotic disorder, the dissociative disorders, traumatic grief reactions, "complex PTSD," borderline personality disorder, and trauma-related panic disorder. Including over 35% new references, this volume provides a scholarly, yet practical review of trauma theory and measurement. ... Read more

Product Description
Major events such as the Asian crisis in 1997, the Russian default on short-term debt in 1998, the downfall of the hedge fund long-term capital management in 1998 and the disruption in payment systems following the World Trade Center attack in 2001, all resulted in increased management’s attention to liquidity risk.

Banks have realized that adequate systems and processes for identifying, measuring, monitoring and controlling liquidity risks help them to maintain a strong liquidity position, which in turn will increase the confidence of investors and rating agencies as well as improve funding costs and availability.

Liquidity Risk Measurement and Management: A Practitioner’s Guide to Global Best Practices provides the best practices in tools and techniques for bank liquidity risk measurement and management. Experienced bankers and highly regarded liquidity risk experts share their insights and practical experiences in this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars By practitioners for practitioners
This book is a collection of a series of articles on banking funding liquidity risk. These articles are written by different practitioners including a few by editors Matz and Neu.This compilation-like format causes the flow through the book to be somewhat disruptive making it a difficult read end-to-end.As a result it is best used as a reference guide. This is not necessarily a bad thing as the book is a true treasure of funding liquidity related topics that one will need to reference from time to time.

It covers topics such as liquidity management governance and control aspects, liquidity MIS, planning, stress testing, early warning indicators and funding contingency planning, projecting cash flows for different product types including non-maturing cash flows, impact of collateral and credit risk, liquidity-at-risk measures and some case studies.A bonus is the long list of liquidity-related article references throughout that one can source to deepen knowledge on specific topics.

Let's face it, there are not many books around focussing on funding liquidity risk - if you are involved with banking funding liquidity management, this book needs to be on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good handbook for Liquidity Risk Management
A good handbook, written by an industry practitioner, that makes a lot of difference. I found it helpful to develop a multi level view of liquidity within the various classes of banks, like large, small regional, and complex banking entities. This lays out a framework for a ALCO, Limit monitoring driven from data collected in various formats, trying to address complex issues like non-maturing product maturities.
I would recommend for the serious Treasury professional, it is an expensive purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for bankers and non-bankers alike
Mr. Matz and Mr. Neu provide insights into liquidity planning and management that are of value to bankers and non-bankers alike. While there is sufficient theory to intrigue the conceptual crowd, the book excels at providing "real world" examples and solutions. Non-bankers should strongly consider this book as well:
* bank "best practices" can be adapted and/or adopted for other financial institutions, as well as general corporates
* bank liquidity and illiquidity influences the broader economy.

If you only read one liquidity book in the marketplace, this is the one. ... Read more

This work was originally issued as a two-volume set, published in 1987 and 1988. It constitutes the definitive presentation of the system of classifying moral judgment built up by Lawrence Kohlberg and his associates over a period of twenty years. Researchers in human development and education around the world, many of whom have worked with interim versions of the system - indeed, all those seriously interested in understanding the development of moral judgment - will find it a useful and accessible resource. Volume 1 reviews Kohlberg's stage theory, and the large body of research on the significance and utility of his moral stages. Issues of reliability and validity are addressed. The volume ends with detailed instructions for using the reference sections, which are presented in volume 2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introductory book to error analysis
Everyone who does and will design, execute and/or post-analyze measurements, regardless of where - classroom or real -, should read this book.I've studied statistics and probabilities and took a number of engineering and physical science classes, but none gave me such a coherent view of the problem and how to approach it.This book gives you the first clear & definite step forward with the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great error analysis
This is no doubt a great book on error analysis for scientists and engineers, especially for those who are very interested in working in a lab. The content is very detailed and specific. This book contains a lot of fine examples and exercising problems. The back of the book provides solutions to some of the problems (odd-numbered ones).

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introductory text
This is a great introduction to error propagation and statistical analysis in general, and to least-squares fitting of a straight line to a set of data in particular. It is clear, and guides the reader step-by-step to a full understanding, first in a largely non-mathematical way, then gradually using simple calculus. Perhaps it moves too slowly for some readers, but this relaxed speed makes the text very readable, and the information given is solid. As such it compares favorably with, e.g., Bevington's Data Reduction and Error Analysis.

One might quibble with the fact that Taylor's discussion of least squares doesn't mention the direct proportionality y = Bx (as in Ohm's law for the flow of electricity though metals, or in Beer's law for the absorption of light) but jumps right in with the line y = A + Bx. It also devotes little space (less than 5 pages combined) to fitting a polynomial, to using other nonlinear functions that can be transformed into a line, or to multivariate least squares, but once the proper foundation is laid with the straight line, the principles involved are largely the same.

Perhaps the greatest deficiency of this book is the fact that it completely ignores the digital age. Statistical methods such as least squares analysis have mostly become popular because they are so readily implemented on computers, and there are ready-made programs available for almost every conceivable software platform. Yet Taylor's book completely ignores this, and it shows in his neglect of nonlinear least squares, an increasingly important application of the least squares concept based on a quite different, trial-and-error approach that is only practical on a computer.

For users who like to see how the ideas in Taylor's Error Analysis are implemented in practice, look for a text fitting your favored software. For C++ or Fortran you may want to read the excellent chapter on Modeling of Data in the Numerical Recipes of William Press et al., for Excel consult the first few chapters in my Advanced Excel for Scientific Data Analysis, and for Matlab use Cleve Moler's quite sophisticated Numerical Computing with Matlab. All of these show ready-made programs, and discuss how to choose between them. But for the basics, start with Taylor, so that you know what you are doing, and why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book arrived very quickly and in mint condition! It is a great book for people who need to use statistics (or error analysis) but don't know a lot about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners in the performance analytics world
This book provides you with everything you need to understand performance analytics. It's well written and very comprehensive. Some parts of this book might bore you to death, but performance analytics is boring to begin with (at least for me). There's so much to learn and little to apply especially if you use powerful and dynamic investemnt tools like bloomberg and factset which already have the capabilities to do attribution, contribution, return calculations, and tons of other functions without any need to see the underlying calculation methodology. I give this book 4 stars because it does not bring anything new to the table or any advanced topics on fixed income and hedge funds. However I highly recommend it to any person working in a performance analytics group.

Product Description
Elements of Effective Governance: Measurement, Accountability and Participation is one of the first books to explore the relationship between accountability, government performance, and public participation. It discusses two main assumptions: greater accountability leads to better performance; and the more the public is involved in the measurement of government performance, the more they can hold government accountable for its performance.

Presenting an introduction to each topic, this book provides a thorough understanding of theories, concepts, and practices. The beginning sections explore the basics of performance measurement, look at public sector accountability, and examine the rationale for and against direct citizen participation. The later sections provide an integrated discussion of performance measurement, accountability, and citizen participation and demonstrate how the strategic alignment of these critical concepts can lead to more effective governance. The final section incorporates in-depth case studies of a variety of efforts to implement performance measurement, hold individuals and organizations accountable for results, and involve the public in the deliberative process.

Through theoretical and practical discussions, this book highlights the importance of, as well as the challenges associated with, government performance, accountability, and citizen participation. By combining these components under one cover, this book demonstrates the importance of their mutually reinforcing relationships. This volume provides the tools needed to design and develop strategies to improve government performance and demonstrate accountability. It provides a balanced perspective with its rational discussion of performance measurement and its skeptical assessment of the relationship between performance improvement and the demands for greater accountability. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Practical Operational Measurements Guide
This book is vastly superior to any other I have read on the subject of measurements. One gets the impression that Will Kaydos definitely knows whereof he speaks. Early in the book, Kaydos provides a measurement model that is applicable to any kind of process and at any level - organisational, process, functional or individual. Several realistic examples permeate the book and two detailed case studies in the appendices add immensely to the value the reader can derive from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in my personal reference library
This is one of a handful of books on performance metrics I recommend to peers and clients. The author starts with one of the most cogent set of reasons for measuring performance that I've read. These reasons are compelling, reinforced with realistic examples, and clearly articulated. He then briefly discusses the art and science of measurement, and associated standards, techniques and methods. I especially liked his "Measuring the Unmeasurable" advice, which knocks down mental barriers and shows how you can, indeed, measure indicators that you may think are unmeasurable.

The approach he sets out is systematic and encompasses performance measurement in not only manufacturing, but in services and sales. In fact, Appendix C, "Implementing a Formal Selling Process", shows just how wide the scope of this book is.I've worked in technical pre-sales support and was thoroughly impressed with his approach.

Among the aspects of this book I especially like are the techniques he explains, the way you are lead through the development of an effective measurement system by identifying what to measure, implementing the system, analysis and interpretation, and actionable use of performance measures. Moreover, the way the author knits together a system based on multiple perspectives, taking into account strategic, customer, departmental and company-wide views is insightful.I also like the chapter on ensuring measures are showing an accurate picture, and the benchmarking information in Appendix A, "What Some Leading Companies are Measuring".

In my opinion this is a "must-have" book for anyone involved in operations, process improvement, or who has P&L responsibilities and wants to manage by fact - the right facts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful guide
The book features procedures for identifying what to measure and specific steps readers can take to determine what to measure. It's a useful guide for figuring out what to measure for a specific organizational need, but requires some knowledge of measurement terminology. While I found it a useful guide as a performance and scorecard consultant, some of my clients found it a bit daunting. Good models and examples throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent approach for those who wish to start OPM
Will Kaydos did actually a very good work. This book addresses to top management officers who wish to change to a more customer orientated approach and implement Performance Measurement in every aspect of their business. Well structured and easy to read with significant information on effective management. There are no equations or weird stuff in this book, because the author wishes to explain the core of this subject: how to implement performance measurementeverywhere. This is a great book for industrial engineers, CEO's, Sales Managers, HR managers, Quality assurance officers and anyone involving with performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for those committed to business improvement.
A terrific business improvement reference applicable to a wide range of business and their operations.Consultants and managers will especially value Kaydos' insights into the role of metrics in supporting culture change. The case studies are well chosen with clearly presentedimplementation examples and informative detail.

"OperationalPerformance Measurement" is a must read if you are committed toimproving your business or the business of your clients. ... Read more
