Book Description
Prepared by residents and attending physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital, this pocket-sized looseleaf is one of the best-selling references for medical students, interns, and residents on the wards and candidates reviewing for internal medicine board exams. In bulleted lists, tables, and algorithms, Pocket Medicine provides key clinical information about common problems in cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, hematology-oncology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, rheumatology, and neurology. The six-ring binder resembles the familiar "pocket brain" notebook that most students and interns carry and allows users to add notes. This Third Edition is fully updated, has tabs to help readers locate organ systems, and has more cross-referencing in the index. It also has pockets in the front and the back of the book to accommodate the reader's own notes. ... Read more

Pocket Medicine: The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine (Pocket Notebook Series)
Usefull advisor for every medical student in his/her advanced years of learning, also very good for internal medicine MD

5-0 out of 5 stars Replaces all my other pocket guides!
Pocket Medicine is an outstanding quick reference, covering an astonishing amount of information in a small notebook.

During spare moments, I can review the well-designed chapters. When I need a reference, the facts are laid out in a clear and logical format, and referenced to journals and studies where appropriate.

A more complete index is the one thing I would add to this book, but that's a small quibble. It's easy enough to add notations to the back of the book, or add a few extra pages (the binder takes standard six-ring refills, such as FiloFax Personal pages).

My pockets are lighter since I found Pocket Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Intern
Better than having a palm.I do use my palm for epocrates, but its too hard to try and look up medical issues on the fly.Much easier to pull this book out and read the section.Very high yield stuff, no fluff.Just tells you what you need to know.Even includes references to major studies on that topic.I really suggest having this book when you start residency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick reference
Excellent comprehensive review with essential assessment of details about important diseases
i encourage every medical resident to have it

Book Description
The definitive book of yoga therapy, this groundbreaking work comes to you from the medical editor of the country’s premier yoga magazine, who is both a practicing yogi and a Western-trained physician.

Beginning with an overview of the history and science of yoga, Dr. McCall describes the many different techniques in the yoga tool kit; explains what yoga does and who can benefit from it (virtually everyone!); and provides lavishly illustrated and minutely detailed instructions on starting a yoga practice geared to your fitness level and your health status. Yoga as Medicine offers a wealth of practical information, including how to:

•Utilize yogic tools, including postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, for both prevention and healing of illness

•Master the art of becoming more in tune with your body

•Communicate more effectively with your doctor

•Adopt therapeutic yoga practices as either an alternative or a complement to surgery and to expensive, sometimes dangerous medications

•Practice safely

Find an instructor and a style of yoga that are right for you. With twenty chapters devoted to the work of individual master teachers, including such well-known figures as Patricia Walden, John Friend, and Rodney Yee, Yoga as Medicine shows how these experts have applied the wisdom of this ancient holistic practice to twenty different conditions, ranging from arthritis to chronic fatigue, depression, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, infertility, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, and obesity. Defining yoga as “a systematic technology to improve the body, understand the mind, and free the spirit,“ Dr. McCall shows the way to a path that can truly alter your life.

An indispensable guide for the millions who now practice yoga or would like to begin, as well as for yoga teachers, body workers, doctors, nurses, and other health professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info
I enjoyed this book and found that it had a lot of good modifictions for health restrictions and had some great info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you are serious about Yoga
I have been practicing Yoga for many years and see the difference that it has made for me.This book really qualifies the benfits that I have seen personally and it has helped to structure poses for my specific requirements. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding and practice of Yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful, with simple sequences for all people
This book is very useful, the sequences of postures are very simple and for all kinds of people, and that is fundamental, because not all the sick people are experts in yoga postures. I bought "Light on Yoga" too, and is an excellent complement, because at the end of the book it has many advanced sequences for deseases that not everyone can do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers and health practitioners
I'd been looking forward to getting this book and was glad I did. As a student of several different types of yoga and a prospective teacher, I found the contents to be very helpful to various types of physical ailments that one hears about, but needs more in depth information on how to assist a student with.
The writing is clear and concise. The chapter outlines are very well organized and the index is easy to use in a hurry. Each chapter has a different physical challenge, from Migranes to HIV and they are noted with experiences from well trained teachers. The chapters give precise information on what is occuring in the body with these different maladies and the yoga postures suggested come with photographs and clear instructions for any adjustments for the student.
I find this to be a treasure of a reference book and no doubt will refer to it many times in my teaching career.

5-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book.
I really like the book. I starts with types of yoga and the importance of good quality teachers. Great orientation for beginners. I provides scientific proves of yogic healing. It focuses on medical issues like depression or insomnia than postural, physical issues (shoulder injury, etc.). This book is a contribution of many well-known teachers which makes it more interesting. I recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
A Practical A-to-Z Reference To Natural And Conventional Treatments For Infants & Children. Written by a medical doctor, a naturopath, and a registered nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child is a complete A-to-Z guide to the most common childhood disorders and their treatments, using BOTH alternative care and conventional medicine. Highly Recommended!Amazon.com
Health-care practitioners are a polarized lot: generally speaking, either they subscribe wholeheartedly to conventional medical treatments, or they eschew them altogether. This can be a great source of frustration to parents, whose natural response to a child's illness is a desire to do everything possible to make that child well. Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child presents an integrated approach to children's health care that allows a parent to do just that. This excellent reference applies a full spectrum of responses to common childhood health problems: conventional medical treatments, dietary guidelines, nutritional supplements, herbal treatments, homeopathy, and acupressure; for each ailment, general recommendations and preventive measures are also offered. The book's authors explain that their approach to health care "considers all treatment possibilities and draws on what works. Sometimes this will be an herb, sometimes an antibiotic, sometimes both." This well-researched, balanced, and clearly written reference belongs on every parent's bookshelf.--Jane Steinberg ... Read more

I love this book.I wanted something simple and easy to understand. And this book does it. I have used it 3 times now as the cold season is apon us and it works great. My kids were never givin over the counter meds. and the felt better. With the natural herbs from the book. I would get this book if you ar a mom that cares what your child puts in ther bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the home!!!
My wife and I wish we would have had a book like this when our children were small. It has great reference information for diagnosing and treating common heath problems. We have bought addition copies to give to our kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book-Valuable resource for any home with children
Whether you are a parent or grandparent, this book is a valuable resource for your home. This book has been so helpful many times in our home.My son and his little friend both came down with croup. The little friend had to endure a steroid shot in the buttocks and my son only had to sip tea.And my sons croup cleared up much quicker! What I like most about this book is in non emergency situations I can try some less invasive treatments which tend to make my "patient" much more comfortable than dragging them out of the house to the doctor for every sniffle or cough. If medical intervention is necessary it has helped me to ask good questions and give good information to our health care professional. If medical intervention is required the suggestions for diet changes or immune system boosters allows me to provide the best care for my child during recovery.I have given this to several new mommies giving them the confidence to care for the needs of their children during illness, whether that means seeking medical intervention or preparing safe remedies at home.

Highly Recommended!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best help for new moms
This book was so very helpful as a new mom. You worry all the time when should you call the doctor, when should you handle this yourself and this book helps you to know when it is important to call.

It gives clear explanations of the symptoms of illnesses and different ways to handle symptoms besides using conventional medicine.

I highly recommend this book to everybody.

This alternative-medicine self-help guide promises to teach you to help heal yourself and others using the body's own natural energies. Building on such diverse concepts as acupuncture and therapeutic touch, Donna Eden lays out a practical framework in Energy Medicine for flushing out and recharging the body's systems.

"This book will show you how to work with the electromagnetic and more subtle energies that give your body life," Eden writes, along with her husband, psychologist David Feinstein. "These energies form the foundation of your health."

For instance, if your head aches or feels clouded, energy may be stagnating there, so do the "crown pull" to release it. The book gives a detailed description of how to do this and other energy-fixing exercises, and provides time estimates and illustrations for doing the maneuvers.

Eden, who has practiced energy medicine for more than 20 years and has given classes around the world, also relates stories about some of her clients, including those with cancer and chronic pain. While Eden says people can help themselves and others with the techniques in the book, she urges them to seek professional care as well.

Energy Medicine includes chapters on various energy systems, ranging from the meridians to the chakras, the basic grid to the strange flows, and chapters on how such systems relate to pain and illness. It also includes an appendix listing organizations and Internet sites for other forms of alternative medicine, like naturopathy and qigong. The book is a useful guide for people interested in this form of alternative healing.Book Description
The first practical guide to using energy medicine to improve physical vitality, emotional health, and mental acuity.

"Even the most hard-nosed doctor will admit that some people have a healing presence that makes us--and our immune system--better than before. Donna Eden is one of those rare healers."--Gloria Steinem

World-renowned healer Donna Eden is able to literally see the body's energy keypoints and meridians. In Energy Medicine, she tells readers how they, too, can visualize these energy systems, determine the causes of physical and psychological problems based on the state of these energies, and devise highly effective treatments to remedy specific ailments and injuries. This is the only interactive guide that shows how you can work with energy to strengthen the immune, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems; alleviate pain, emotional stress, and depression; and improve memory and learning skills.

In health conferences throughout the world, Eden consistently exhilarates and amazes her audiences. Blending intuitive genius with a profound grasp of how the body functions as an energy system, Donna Eden's unique approach to energy medicine integrates Eastern, Celtic, and Western healing arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is a really great book!Easy to understand and apply.Interesting to read, and it's an excellent reference book as well!I also have the EnergyKit that Donna Eden has out and recommend getting that too.The info in the kit is contained in this book, but there is a DVD included where you can actually see Donna Eden doing the energy work and it makes it much easier to know that you're doing things correctly, plus she is fun to watch. You also a booklet and cards that make it even easier to do the energy works, along with the pendulum.I have other pendulums, but this one has a string thru the top which makes it very easy to use to 'spin' over chakras and meridian points. It's not difficult to see that this energy stuff works because you can muscle/energy test and see the differences immediately. Highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Double Blind Studies
I have researched the subject of EMT and found that using double blind, objective studies proved that it is not effective and does not work. You will notice that all references used in this text and other books about this subject are doctors and others that participate in the marketing and profit by selling their books, tapes, DVD's, seminar, etc.You can get free information about EMT by doing a Google search which will cover most if not all that's in this book.I don't like to see people waste their money on stuff that is unproven. The materially didn't help me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Medicine
Very Well done.Informative and inspiring.Handy as reference as well
I appreciate Donna Eden sharing her wealth of information

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!
Donna has a rare gift of sharing her extensive healing knowledge and techniques in a very simple and practical way. If you're looking forreal tools to enhance your healing work; or simply working on your own personal growth, then I highly reccommend you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple exercises
I enjoyed this book because she gave so many simple to do exercises that support the body's ability to heal itself. She also talks about energy testing, and this was the first time I'd ever heard it referred to in that manner. I'd always heard muscle testing. I like her terminology.

She has a simple exercise on how to release built-up stress on page 91, which I dog-eared. That's one of the ways I judge how good a book is, how many dog-ears I give it, this one got 13. So that means there are 13 areas I want to be able to find easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Terminology
This is a remarkable book for anyone interested in the medical field. You don't have to be a professional doctor or nurse to use it, the language is every day understandable and can be used over and over again. If someone asked me to sell my book to them because they were going to take the class I would not do it.The illustrations are excellent in helping you learn all about the body.I will finish my class this week and intend to re-read this entire book over again because I know I missed alot of interesting facts that can be used throughout my lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Book
I purchased Language of Medicine. This book is great for those entering the Medical field. The pictures included are high in detail and very explanatory. Also included is a CD with more information and Medical games. The price was right as well.I've spoken to other students in my class who purchased this same book from the school's bookstore.Their complaint was that they paid $25.00 more than what I paid.I'd recommend this book to anyone studying medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful book over all
i was asked to purchase this book for a class, and am impressed with the quality of the exercises contained within it.the only issue i have is that a few random combining forms or prefixes and suffixes having no definition to be found in the book at all... i've had to use the internet to look up what some of them mean.the enclosed cd-rom is also a great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it!
This is a very easy to understand and straight forward book explaining the language of medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Language of Medicine
This book is required by my college course so I can't really say if it's a good reader or not for those interested in the medical field.I can say that it is extremely easy to follow and read, but there is a lot of vocabulary. You don't have to have any previous science or biology learning to read and understand this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine cards
An excellent source of councel, support, enlightment and wisdome in an interestingly written book and beautifully painted cards. A real joy! Merit

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
Ever since I heard that in the Native American Spiritual tradition the universe may be sending us a message when we have an unusual experience with an animal I saw my own significant contacts with animals in a new way.
My favorite source for verifying my experiences is Jamie Sams and David Carson's cards called "Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power through the Ways of Animals." They believe that each animals' medicine relays a life lesson.
Sams and Carson's helped me better understand some unusual animal experiences.
My first experience involved six baby ring neck snakes that suddenly appeared in our cabin when our friend from South Africa was visiting. Since my husband and I had lived there for five years we decided it was an omen. We did a "Pathway Spread" on our friend with Sams and Carson's animal medicine cards and learned that the snake is a symbol of change, transmutation, death and rebirth. We were stunned as she, after a two-year separation, was about to ask her husband of 29 years for a divorce.
On another occasion I heard the sneezy-snorts of some white tail deer. I looked out the dining room window and froze. Three deer snorted and pawed the ground within a couple of feet of where Lady, our golden retriever, lay in her dog pen. Sensing something was wrong I dashed over.
Lady got up, staggered and collapsed. My husband and I took her to the vet but it was too late; she died shortly thereafter. The vet said she had cancer. We were heartbroken. Wondering about the deer I consulted the medicine cards and learned that the deer is a symbol of love and gentleness. I like to think that the deer were trying to comfort Lady and alert us about her distress.
A friend and I were charmed when an otter circled our canoe on a river in Florida. We became nervous when it tried to climb the canoe's bow and stern. I shrieked when it hoisted itself into the boat at my feet via my dry bag. Luckily my friend was able to scoop the otter out of the boat with her paddle. We were amazed when the otter chased our canoe as we raced off but ignored two other canoes a few moments later.
When I checked the significance of an otter in the medicine cards I learned that it is a symbol "woman medicine." Sams and Carson said an otter tells us to become the playful child, to allow things to unfold, to stop worrying and to not hang on to material things that become a burden. They said the otter teaches us to look at the joyousness of the receptive side of our nature, to give freely and to move gently into the river of life, "By flowing with the waters of the Universe we balance, honor female receptive energy and discover the power of woman."
Since I've been struggling to find the right balance in giving and receiving and work and play I saw otters' medicine as a sign to be more generous and have fun.
My fourth experience involved a musk turtle that sat in one of our creek's pools for a week. Since there was a drought and the turtle seldom moved as the water retreated I became concerned. When I told my husband at breakfast that I thought the turtle was dying we decided to relocate it in a larger river after lunch.
My husband appeared a few hours later and said, "Your `dying' turtle is sitting at the front door of our cabin." We were shocked. The turtle had climbed a steep hill and found our front door. We immediately drove the turtle to a nearby river and released it.
The medicine cards said the turtle is a symbol of Mother Earth. It asks us to honor our creative source, to be grounded, to flow harmoniously between the water and the earth and to go inside ourselves for protection.
Feeling depressed about the drought the turtle's presence gave me the gift of gratitude.
I believe there is a presence among all of creation, the earth, people, animals and plants that is healing and draws us ever closer to God. It was said in the Book of Job; ask the beasts, and they shall teach you, and the birds of the air to tell you.
Animal Medicine and the use of the medicine cards not only helped me identify and resolve issues but better appreciate their gifts.
All I need to do is pay attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book I use almost daily
When I wrote about animal medicine in Practically Shameless: How Shadow Work Helped Me Find My Voice, My Path, and My Inner Gold, it was to this book I was referring, as it was my introduction to this form of spirituality. Animal medicine has since become a meaningful part of my daily spirituality, keeping me in touch with the Divine through my encounters with the animal kingdom. It has helped me see which creatures are lifelong totems (spider, frog, bear) and which other creatures are sent to teach me something I need to know during this particular time in my life. For several years I used the cards at each new moon for guidance. I have since expanded my collection to include several books by Ted Andrews, including Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small and Animal-Wise: The Spirit Language and Signs of Nature. I purchased the latter to explore several African animals that may have been totems of my father's. But Jamie Sams' book contains a rare depth of wisdom that reflects the long history of her people. I recommend this book highly to every person wanting to know more about Native American spirituality and seeking the presence of the Divine in nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very grounded!
Excellent book. It has been a very good source in my spiritual work.Thank you Jamie Sams and David Carson.

This book is extremely informative. There are many recipes and instructions on how to use the herbs that you collect. However, the book doesn't have any pictures to visually describe the plants mentioned. Otherwise its an excellent read.

I bought this book as soon as it came out. If you are herbally minded, it is formost simply a good read. But it is also a wonderful handbook and explains things in a subtly spiritual way that inspires care for your tinctures and other items you make.

While I now have much more experience and use this book less frequently and rely on the "just the facts, m'am" condensed recipe books, I still return to this one to keep me grounded in what it is really all about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book
This is a gorgeous book and one of my favourite herbal medicine books. It is beautifully written and presented and the pictures are lovely. I am training to be a clinical medical herbalist and it is so easy to get caught up in tinctures in bottles that come from a supplier - this book brings me back to grassroots herbalism, the growing and harvesting of plants and the making of medicines with your own hands. I love this book and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Green nails it - a great introductory text
James Green shares his wealth of knowledge in this well-organized, informative, and extensive text with a nice touch of humor and spiritualism. His deep love for the art of herbalism shines through in this well-written piece, which flows beautifully and is a pleasure to read. The illustrations by his daughter are quite fitting and match the herbal aesthetic as well. A must-have for any budding herbalist (and worth picking up for the intermediate as well!)

5-0 out of 5 stars My Most Used Herbal Book.
A true compendium of information. I have learned so much from this book and constantly refer to it when preparing remedies. I am giving it 5 stars because it is so superior to anything else written, however, it only covers a limited amount of herbs and their uses. Most of them easily wildcrafted in Northern California. Granted some herbs are meant to be used with caution and most individuals involved with using herbs learn these quickly. No one wants to get themselves or anyone else sick. I just wish James Green had covered a few more than the 35 in depth. But, it is still a wonderful book nonetheless. ... Read more

Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine weighs three pounds and nine ounces, has 946 pages, and is as informative as it is hefty. The authors are naturopathic doctors--they focus on promoting health and treating disease with nontoxic, natural therapies. Naturopathic medicine follows these seven principles:

  1. Do no harm: use safe, effective, natural therapies.
  2. Nature has healing powers: the physician's job is to enhance the body's natural power to heal itself.
  3. Identify and treat the cause: find the cause, rather than just suppress the symptoms.
  4. Treat the whole person: administer to the patient's physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and social sides.
  5. The physician is a teacher: educate and motivate patients to take more responsibility for their health.
  6. Prevention is the best cure: health-supporting life habits prevent disease.
  7. Establish health and wellness: increase the patient's positive physical and mental state.

This book shows you how to improve your health through a positive mental attitude, healthy lifestyle, health-promoting diet, and supplements, with plenty of practical tips. Learn disease prevention through enhancing key body systems. The bulk of the book details natural remedies for treating more than 70 ailments. Each includes symptoms, description, therapeutic considerations (with discussion of studies), and a treatment summary, including nutritional supplements and botanical (herbal) medicines. If you have a disease, this book will give you a valuable perspective on natural treatments. 5-0 out of 5 stars I've saved thousand$ on doctor visits!
I've owned the earlier edition of this book for over 10 years and have used it exclusively for all ailments. It has always provided the most sensible advice. My father frequently called me for medical advice from my book so I bought him this latest edition. He says it has helped him in talking to his doctor by providing good information on the disease, cause, treatment options. It takes the naturopathic approach to treating illness, avoiding pharmaceuticals, and focusing on natural remedies. I would not be without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a former skeptic of naturopathic medicine, I would like to tell people that are considering purchasing this book that it is a balanced, well-written resource.

I appreciate the fact that it cites what we know from mainstream medicine and then illustrates how alternative natural therapies can be applied to various conditions.I also pleased that for each condition, multiple therapies are recommended instead of just one. This allows the reader the ability to tailor their treatment plan to their needs and available materials.

Very educational and well written.Would highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Medicine at it's best..
This book is the single most amazing book I have read on medicine and medical conditions. I have many medical books, and although they are quite definitive with regard to illnesses and mostly orthodox medication as a remedy, this book will open your eyes to a whole new world. The medical community does not treat the body holistically, and i do not mean that in a hippyish, spiritual way, but genuinely. There are so many specialists in the world, each being specifically trained as a gastroenterologist, cardiologist, etc,. but only clinical diagnosticians seem to view the body as a whole. Mr. Michael Murray has extensive knowledge on psysiology and anatomy, and it is clearly evident that he has insight into the genuine reasons for so many illnesses, as he is not under the thumb of pharmaceutical companies that doctors rely on so much. He has covered all the areas of the body, trying to be understandable and as succinct as possible, (this is an encyclopedia, not a text book per se), while not undermining the integrity of the medical information he dispenses. EVERY SINGLE home that can get their hands on this book will benefit for their lifetime. All I can say is there is no other book on medicine that for the lay person, will help them, inform them, and possibly cure them, like this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must to have book
An Excellent book with great info. A must to have book at an unbeatable price makes it an excellent value for money. The info are up to date and usefull.

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't rate it....
I never got this text!I ordered four books, this one has yet to be delivered to me.I have sent emails to the seller and have never gotten a response, same thing when I emailed Amazon.I did check this book out of the library to read for a class...it is an excellent Novel-I highly recommend it, just not from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best writers in American History
Simply fantastic. It is a shame though, that she is not included in the canon of literary geniuses of American history. Her stories read beautifully and her artistic ability to paint a picture with words is amazing.Read all her books, they are all wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book is a classic, a truly great book.It reads like interlaced short stories. Two Native American families:Kashpaws and Nanapush.Lazarres and Morrissey French blood mixed in.The characters are exquisitely drawn. The story is tragic, bewildering, full of hate, overarched with love. This book will make you anxious, scared, sad and guilty. You'll be rooting for these people. The writing is surreal, sorcery, naked truth, poetry. What a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Medicine Heals the Heart
In Louise Erdrich's novel "Love Medicine," the reader is introduced to a rich and varied cast of native americans living on a Chippewa Reservation in the Dakotas. The novel is basically an inter-connected set of short stories, all of which deal with the trials and tribulations of the Kashpaw family,a well respected, well-connected family. The running theme is the way we all deal with life, death, and every mountain and hurdle in between. The central characters all learn the best way to cope with nearly any situation is to rely on the heart, to let love heal the wounds of the soul. Erdrich paints her characters in colors that are extremely believable and heartbreakingly true to the human form. At any rate, she certainly didn't deserve the critiscm that Leslie Silko slapped on her. If you are looking for examples of "noble savages" fighting the corrupting influences of the evil, outside world, then, reader, you should look somewere else. Erdrich's work has none of the high-minded, self-righteousness that Silko spouts from every page. In a sense, Erdrich's story is more real, warmer, and infinetly more enjoyable than Silko's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts about book and reviews
About a month ago, I returned to this book after well over a decade. It meant a lot to me when I first read it, and it means a lot to me now. Most writers can point to a book that so inspired them, they made the impractical and too often demoralizing decision to become a writer; so it was with Love Medicine and me. Erdrich is the kind of master of language and of the art of perception and voice that one can never hope to match, with phrases and lines and microstructures so graceful a reader can find herself sprawled out in some other consciousness, having slid right through them. I was surprised to see the negative review listed below by J.V., so I looked at that reviewer's other reviews. Mostly she reviews games. Games have heroes and villains. They have protagonists and antagonists. These are the stuff of fantasy. Fantasy is wonderful...for those who don't believe life itself is beautiful enough, in all of its horror and complexity, to spend any serious time in. This book deserves careful readers, and obviously has done well to turn away anyone looking for a simplistic moral to the story (we have fables to take on that role) or characters who serve as symbols and dichotomies (we have relgious extremists and pop psychologists and the like to give use plenty o' this) or stereotypes of the "Noble Savage" (made-for-TV movies and cultural panderers may wear this crown), and has instead won an enduring audience who will always recognize Erdrich as among the top voices of English-language literature. Erdrich is an artful, intelligent, subtle woman who can make you feel some degree compassion for anyone, however flawed and from any background, and real compassion is much needed in this rather cruel and crude, if compelling and lovely, world of ours. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars You Must Read This If You Have Cancer or Know Anyone Who Does
You Must Read This If You Have Cancer or Know Anyone Who Does... I titled this review with those words becuase I believe that statement to be as simple a truth I can make it. The book offers a powerful insight into the cause and treatment of cancer from one of the worlds leading authorities, as well as accounting his own journey to that understanding. The wisdom from the author is profound as it discuses both the medical understanding and approach to cancer as well as the humanistic and natural approach of mind-body medicine. It offers more than hope, it offers a true solution to those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Read it - it's as simple as that!

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for people you love when they're diagnosed with Cander.
12+ years ago when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer (my second bout with cancer), she gave me this book. Not only did it help me develop, sustain and exude a positive attitude during my entire treatment phase, but it made me a touchstone for anyone else who was diagnosed with cancer and contacted me.Since that time, whenever someone that is near and dear to me, someone that I truly love and want to do something positive for when they are diagnosed with cancer, I give them a copy of this book. Not one of them has died to date.My most recent gift of the book has been to my husband and he is visibly changing his attitude as he reads it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not your fault!
When I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I read a wide variety of "inspirational" cancer survivor books. The Bloch's Foundation's "Fighting Cancer" (free just contact them) and Norman Cousin's "Anatomy of an Illness" really resonated for me, made sense and reinforced my focus.Bernie Siegel's books on the other hand made me feel that the disease was my fault for having the "wrong" personality and that if I allowed any negative thoughts into my mind, I was putting my recovery in doubt.Heck most of my thoughts during treatment were negative, real negative!I literally threw his books in the trash, probably more of a symbolic gesture, but it felt good.BTW I am cancer free for the last 16 years, fathered a child and getting a kick out every day.

3-0 out of 5 stars A powerful message but not scientifically prooven
Bernie's central theme is that there is a strong correlation between emotional health and physical health. However he rarely cites any scientific evidence for his claim. He keeps repeating this message based on his experiences with random patients. Surely one can conclude many things from random patients, but a theory has to applicable accross a large sample. There has to be a 'control' if the study is to have any scientific merit. I wished he had shown more of these studies.

This would definitely be a five star book had the author been more scientific in prooving his point. Nevertheless I do personally agree with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars hope, but not false hope
I'd pretty much accepted that i was going to die from cancer. My doctors had too. My friend gave me this book and it caused a huge attitude shift in me. Now I feel that I have it within me to heal and live a long happy and healthy life. I've been told there is nothing medically can be done for me. If I hadn't read this book first I would have just laid down and died when they told me. But now I've opened myself up to other tools for healing - good diet, wheatgrass, reiki, meditation and absolutely no sugar. Time will tell, but I think I'm on the right track.

I thought this book was so good that I ordered a copy to give to my oncologist. He's a lovely man and I believe his desire to help his patients will lead him to use this book as a useful tool in the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is
I used this for both family med and internal med clerkships. It is amazing.Everything you need is in this book.Read it, know it, and you'll ace the shelf exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful!
I used this book during my MS3 internal medicine rotation. For a review book, it is quite thorough! Don't be fooled by its fairly slender size --- the pages are so information-dense that you'll likely need several weeks to get through the whole book. The chapters are divided into short sub-chapters, which makes the book easier to tackle when you have a few spare minutes on the wards. Most of the diagrams and flowcharts are very helpful --- in fact, I sometimes referred to them when my team wanted me to give presentations on specific topics. Combine this book with a good question source (like MKSAP 3) and you should be well-prepared for the internal medicine shelf. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon sent out a damaged item
I paid overnight shipping and was sent a book that was in extremely poor condition. It was clear the book was damaged before being shipped and not damaged in transit. This was very annoying because I paid overnight shipping and really needed the book. Originally they sent me a replacement and said I didn't need to send back the damaged book. It took multiple e-mails to get the overnight shipping credited. Recently I received an e-mail that said I hadn't returned the original book and was going to be charged for it. The costumer service has been horrible, it is almost like they don't even read my e-mails before replying to them. I have never had problems with amazon in the past and have bought lots of items here, but this transaction will make me reconsider them in the future.
Step-up to medicine is a great book. I would recommend it to any 3rd year medical student on IM. It covers the entire subject matter better than any other sources. I used step up, case files, and did lots of questions, and preformed pretty well on the shelf. I would highly recommend this book, but would probably buy it through Barnes and Noble or your med schools book store. It is just not worth the hassle I dealt with with amazon to save a couple bucks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good high yield review
Good high yield review, It lays out the basic knowledge base you should before encountering the problem in a clinical situation, but it by no means inclusive.
I would recommend pacing your reading throughout the entire rotation, it is not a good text to use to cram/quick review before the Step/Shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Med school review book!
This book is incredible.A great resource of Internal Medicine student boards. This book is easy to read and yet supplies the critical info you need.If you used this book along with pocket medicine (everyone has it in their pockets) you would DOMINATE the med rotation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic way to learn medical terminology
I bought this book because I am taking a medical terminology course online. I really like the way this book is laid out, how it teaches. You learn the roots and suffixes and prefixes of the words - not just the word itself. This way you can look at almost any word and figure out what it means because you know what each part of the word means. I would recommend this book, but you might want to build up your wrists first - my wrist is sore from lugging this HUGE book around - but it is worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book
I think this book is an excellent review of common internal medicine presentations and diseases. One aspect which is particularly helpful is that it outlines the mechanism by which the disease/presentation occurs which helps you to fully understand the disease process.I would recommend it for anyone keen to review this topic and looking to supplement a more detailed text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I think this is a useful book. It's not particularly well written, but it does have some good information. It's also a bit difficult coming up with a structure for making it through.I just look up keywords from patients I see and cross the cases off as I go along.I suppose it's just something to pass the time and get familiar with some diseases before the real studying starts.I don't recommend trying to read it all the way through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read.
The clinical vignettes are quick, straight forward and are followed by 8-10 pages of good high yield summaries of what you need to know for that specific topic.

Amazon.com
The Definitive Guide is known as the Bible of alternative medicine. You may very well want to use a dictionary stand for this hefty tome; it weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Nearly 400 doctors (M.D.s, Ph.D.s, naturopaths, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, and osteopaths) contribute their cutting-edge knowledge, and the list of names is impressive. You'll find words of advice from Joseph Pizzorno, the president of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington; C. Norman Shealy, the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association; Nobel laureate Linus Pauling; Deepak Chopra; and Joan Borysenko, author and director of the Mind-Body Health Sciences in Boulder, Colorado.

After an intriguing, optimistic look at "The Future of Medicine," the book is divided into two sections. The first profiles 43 alternative therapies--acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, qigong, hyperthermia, and yoga among them--including their development, how they work, proven uses, and controversial or yet-to-be-proven uses, along with contact information for organizations. The second section covers 105 topics such as headaches, mental health, and allergies, along with the alternative therapies that are most likely to help alleviate pain and encourage healing. This guide is easy enough to understand to make it perfect for home reference, while it would also make a fine resource for health care providers interesting in learning more about alternative medicine. --Erica Jorgensen Book Description
Alternative medicine is enjoying more popularity with consumers and greater acceptance in traditional medical communities than ever before. Although alternative methods, such as acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic, and homeopathy, can offer patients less costly and more effective treatment options, it's hard to know how to choose a competent and reliable practitioner. In this revised edition of ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, 400 of the world's leading alternative physicians have contributed safe, affordable, and effective remedies for more than 200 medical conditions ranging from common health problems like allergies, asthma, and obesity to serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and AIDS. With all the schools of alternative medicine combined into one encyclopedic volume, this updated edition of ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE is the bible of good health. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done, but....
This book is well done from an educational perspective. You'll find nice diagrams, figures, a CD-ROM, and everything you need in order to assimilate it nicely. References are provided and well organized.

As usual when it comes to EBM (and paradoxically), it lacks a little bit in introspection, like for example when it claims that basically the only real limitation of EBM is that the physician needs to acquire new skills, while other criticisms (such as the "cookbook" approach or the fact that it might tend toward saving money against the benefit of the patients) are dismissed as "concerns" on how the method is (or will be) used. The authors genuinely sound like thinking EBM should always be applied everywhere to every problem, and that borders with black-vs-white thinking, which is dangerous in and of itself.

However, if you are interested in knowing EBM, how to apply it, where to find resources, etc, this book is most definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and still the best
Sackett's EBM is the Bible for anyone conducting systematic review. It is THE how-to guide for clinical medicine SR and a great starting point for thinking about SR in the social sciences. Thank you Dr. Sackett for bringing SR to the masses.

This is an excellent "how to" manual for those who are serious about learning how to apply evidence based medicine principles.Lots of folks talk about "evidence based medicine" but few really know what it means. This is obviously intended as a teaching tool for residents but is equally useful for any physician who is interested in learning the principles required to do the best job for his/her patient. The size and summary cards are handy for carrying with you wherever you may need them!Easy to read but with great substance.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard for teaching EBM
As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this
