This book was originally free on the web. Some coloured diagrams and additional information have been added to the paper version.
It is dense. You have to maintain concentration not to miss something or alternatively read it several times. Everything is well explained though - so there are no pre-requisites required before you can understand.
The occasional diagram may be labelled wrong - an extra challenge to make sure you are concentrating. Lots of diagrams, but often not on the same page as the text.
There is a subtle bias towards knife makers as an audience.
A great place to start to really understand steel, but it may not include all the information you need e.g very little information on Nickel as an alloying element. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text on physical metallurgy
This is an excellent text for an introduction to physical metallurgy. In its popularity it is perhaps second only to the famous text by Reed-Hill (now Reed-Hill and Abbaschian). Its coverge is limited compared to that of Reed-Hill (for example it doesn't contain chapters on creep and fracture). But the topicsdiscussed are usually at a higher standard than Reed-Hill. There are nice problems at the end of each chapters, most of them reasonably challenging. If you are connceted with physical metallurgy you should definitely get a copy of this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Archaeometallurginsts
John Percy may have died in 1889, but his influence in the world of metallurgy lives on. Percy published a series of books on the various metals (mining, manufacture, and processing). His volumes on the manufacture of iron and steel are crucial to an understanding of the history of ferrous metallurgy and still used today. This volume covers fuels (wood, peat, coal, charcoal, and coke), fire-clays and crucibles, copper, zinc, and brass. Hopefully his other works will also be reprinted. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This highly successful text has been thoroughly revised to provide an up-to-date overview of the essential features of the metallurgy of aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys. The emphasis remains on manufacturing processes and applications - areas in which there have been significant advances in recent years. The extraction of each metal is considered briefly, followed by its casting characteristics and alloying behaviour. Sections on heat treatment properties, fabrication and major applications have been expanded to give a more comprehensive coverage of the subject.Particular attention is paid to microstructure/property relationships and the role of the individual alloying elements.

This succint and informative introduction to the physical metallurgy of light alloys will be essential reading for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in metallurgy, materials, manufacturing and mechanical engineering. It will also prove invaluable to metallurgists and engineers in industry seeking to expand on their knowledge.

* The definitive overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavy words about Light metals in a low weight format.
A thoroughly digestible treatise on the subject of the light metals. Polmear's style keeps it relevant, concise and up to date. I bought the book for its section on Titanium, but the other sections, particularlythose dealing with aluminium and magnesium, show an excellent balance ofgood theory and commercial application. Also pleasing to see is the 'rightamount' of background information given in the right places. Five stars itcertainly deserves. If you deal with light metals, it also deserves a placeon your bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Older very nice book
This is an older book on metallurgy and does not contain info on some of the more "modern" techniques but this book excels at explaining the "what really happens" in very understandable language.

For example, while hunting for info to do some induction heat treating on my parts I have read 3-4 books on induction heating ... but the knowledge was less than forthcoming - I found some starting recipes etc but so what.
I read this book and now that I really understand an isothermal transformation diagram and how to apply it to heat treating so I now understand why things work as they do and what to optimize etc.
Now I can make intelligent tradeoffs on the inductive heating frequency vs. the quenching techniques vs. the type of steel etc.

If you want recipes look at other books but if you want fundamental knowledge then this is a very approachable starting point.

FYI - I am an entrepreneur / engineer with no formal background in ME. ... Read more

Book Description
In this volume, Sandra Blakely considers technological myths and rituals associated with ancient Greek daimones, who made metal; and African rituals in which iron plays a central role. Noting the rich semantic web of associations that has connected metallurgy to magic, birth, kingship, autochthony, and territorial possession in both Greek and African cultures, Blakely examines them together in order to cast light on the Greek demons, which are only fragmentarily preserved and which have often been equated to general types of smithing gods. Her comparison demonstrates that these demons are more sophisticated and ritually useful than has been previously acknowledged. This book provides new insights into the position of technology in Greek myth. Providing a new methodology for the study of Greek religion, which uses comparative cultural material in a thoughtful and careful way, it helps close the fifty-year gap between the social sciences and Classical philology in the theoretical understanding and study of technological systems. ... For me, this is the best up to date review book on stainless steels and especially about their welding metallurgy and weldability. The metallurgic mechanisms and the effects on weldability are very well explained. A wide range of technical people including students can use and understand the book easily. I have been reading Dr. Kotecki's Q&A part and Lippold's articles in Welding Journal for more than ten years, so have gathered some data from these parts of them also made me appreciate them. I guess there couldn't have been a better book nowadays about weldability of SSs also. ... Read more
