Product Description
Recently, our understanding of metals and metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean has been dominated by studies which focus on the circulation and provenance of metals. Over the last decade the study of early metallurgy in the Aegean has witnessed dramatic developments with ever earlier and more detailed evidence for metal production being discovered in the field. Paralleling these field studies are a wealth of new laboratory analyses relating to the material aspects of metal production. This diverse new data when coupled with recent theoretical approaches now allow for significant shifts in our understanding of this important aspect of Aegean prehistory. Since few studies of metallurgy have extended beyond typological analysis of artefacts, the circulation of raw materials and the detailing of technical processes, metallurgy in the Aegean Early Bronze Age was made a subject of discussion at the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology's Round Table. This volume contains fifteen papers which address aspects of mining smelting and artefact production from a range of theoretical perspectives. It represents the first publication of many of the key details from numerous newly discovered sites. Contributors include Yannis Bassiakos, Phillip Betancourt, Mihalis Catapotis, Peter M. Day, Nota Dimopoulou-Rethemiotaki, Roger Doonan, Myrto Georgakopoulou, Jim Muhly, Georgia Nakou, Olga Philaniotou-Hadjianastasiou, Sue Sherratt, Metaxia Tsipopoulou, Yiannis Papadatos and David E. 5-0 out of 5 stars Has a good Richardson-Jeffes nomograph
Darken and Gurry's text contains an excellent nomograph for the Richardson-Jeffes diagram (Figure 14-4, page 349).It is better than Richardson and Jeffes' original diagram in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute, Vol. 160, 1948, pages 261-270.Richardson & Jeffes used a translucent overlay, but Darken & Gurry made it into a nomograph, making it easier to copy and draw on.It also contains more information than the Ellingham diagram (H. J. T. Ellingham, Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, Vol. 63, 1944, pages 125-133).

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic metallurgical thermodynamics text
This is the classic text that applies thermodynamics and physical chemistry to metallic systems. The thermodynamics follows the basic approach of texts such as Lewis and Randall's "Thermodynamics".The opening chapters cover gasses and liquids as background for the rest of the book that is oriented to metallic systems. It begins with the laws of thermodynamics, but instead of focusing on steam engines it concentrates on solutions, heterogeneous equilibrium and phase diagrams. The book provides a firm foundation for understanding phase relations and phase diagrams. It covers metal (mostly Fe) oxide, carbide, nitride and sulfide systems with specific reference to steel production.I feel that its discussion of Richardson diagrams is particularly clear and I have used it and the diagrams that are provided for over 40 years. The book covers more than just thermodynamics. Being a physical chemistry text, applied to metals, it also has chapters on kinetics, electrochemistry and diffusion.

This is the classic text that has been the basis of more modern books. In my opinion it may have been equaled, but never been surpassed for clarity and the depth of understanding that it provides.I would recommend this book for students and practicing metallurgists who want an adjunct to their current textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about finding one's niche in the world
Gertrude the Possum has a potbelly. Her brother Otto does not and ridicules her for it. However when Otto goes out after her one night in search of food and is unsucessful, she is able to prove that she is courageous and is able to find food for the both of them. This book is delightfully different than most books with an overweight protogonist.Instead of Gertrude losing weight and becoming a "normal" sized possum, she is able to come into her own and prove herself. This book is fine proof that you need not be of "normal" weight to be successful in what you do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but with a somewhat misleading title
This is a good book, but with a somewhat misleading title. It should more accurately have been titled Physical Metallurgy of Steels because it is primarily about steels and is much more than just a handbook.A handbook conjures up a vision of a book that is primarily a source for data. There is a lot of data in this book, but it contains much, much, more.It is an excellent text, covering all aspects of the metallurgy of steel in great detail. There are separate chapters on Pearlite, Martensite, Bainite and Austenite, as well as ones on the hardenability and heat treatment of steels; plus chapters on the metallurgy of diffusion, plastic deformation, recovery-recrystallization, grain growth and nucleation in solids in general. These chapters cover all metals, not just iron based ones. This is an excellent metallurgy reference, particularly for anyone interested in steels.

Product Description
Whether you're an experienced evaluator of mineral projects, a student, or a decision maker who is not a practitioner but must use evaluation results, this new book is an essential reference for your bookshelf. Designed to complement traditional engineering texts, this book emphasizes the concepts of mineral project evaluation rather than computational details. It describes various economic evaluation techniques typically employed (including conventional cost analysis, discounted cash flow, and option analysis), their uses, and their relationships with geological, technological, and financial evaluations. Also discussed are the strengths and weaknesses of commonly practiced evaluation methods.

This book explains the practical difficulties in conducting an analysis and correctly interpreting the results, as well as the use of alternative techniques. Because many existing texts do not adequately discuss the meanings and application of merit measures, such as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR), this book represents an exciting departure from standard reference tools. Contents include: why NPV and IRR are both valid and useful merit measures the shortcomings of conventional NPV and IRR analysis the dangers of scenario analysis why conventional incremental analysis is not needed to correctly calculate IRR why the desire to achieve NPV-consistent IRR is misleading how competitive cost analysis is conducted and used why option pricing is an important addition to the evaluation process.

When used correctly, evaluation methods are powerful tools to help us understand the economics of investment projects. Don't miss out on this new source. Contains glossary and full index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Evaluating Mineral Projects
The mineral evaluator has that peculiar necessity of requiring knowledge equally in the two fields of his discipline: the physical science that explains minerals and the financial science that arranges the numbers describing their configuration.

This is a good introduction to financial side of the discipline of evaluating mineral resources. The concepts are described from scratch with great lucidity. Abstruse concepts of the financial apparatus are given a commonsensical turn which deftly assist the understanding. Methods of valuation which rely on geological and minerological investigations are unfortunately sparsely treated or absent.

For a quick introduction to the subject, one that is easy to understand and thorough on the financial side of mineral appraisal, I do recommend this book.

Product Description
Of all the crafts and professions other than the priesthood, none has been more closely connected with the religious taditions of Western peoples than mining and metallurgy. Not so long ago our ancestors would have found it incredible that people could not see the connections between mining, metallurgy, and the sacred, just as we now find it incredible that they could. What was a commonplace to the European mind for millennia has for us become a matter of the deepest obscurity. This is a matter of more than historical interest. It goes to the heart of how we think about work, about religion, and about the relations between people and nature. For our ancestors most forms of work were spiritual paths, disciplines that shaped those who engaged in them as powerfully as the ritual of church or temple. In many crafts and professions the stages by which the learner was inducted were initiations into substantial undestandings of the spirit and of spiritual practice. The early chapters of this book consider how the smith god of the Greeks and Romans made the world in his forge, how Moses made the tabernacle as God commanded, and how mining was sanctified in the Middle Ages. Traditionally, these forms of work were thought to repeat and extend the creative powers of God and nature, and those who engaged in them enjoying a special insight into the processes of the divine creaion. The withdrawal of the sacred sense from human work has diminished religion in many Western societies, and the several stages by which this withdrawal occurred is one of the major concerns of this book. This same withdrawal has also diminished our sense of the relations between the human and natural worlds. In earlier times people felt that working with the natural world helped it to bring to birth the many goods with which it was in labor. Work fulfilled not only the worker but nature itself. Even in quite recent times the spirits of the earth, the fairies and dwarfts, actively assisted farmers and miners in their work according to common belief, and the fifth chapter considers some of the stories about these elemental denizens of the mine. The final chapter examines how the belief in such creatures came to be lost and the consequences of that loss for our understanding of the natural world. This book is a book of stories from many different places and times in the history of the West, and the juxtaposition of these stories in a coherent sequence reveals a way of looking at work, nature, and religon that was much more substantial than is our own. ... Product Description
An advanced yet accessible treatment of the welding process and its underlying science.

Despite the critically important role welding plays in nearly every type of human endeavor, most books on this process either focus on basic technical issues and leave the science out, or vice versa. In Principles of Welding, industry expert and prolific technical speaker Robert W. Messler, Jr. takes an integrated approach—presenting a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of the welding process along with the underlying physics, chemistry, and metallurgy of weld formation.

Promising to become the standard text and reference in the field, this book provides an unprecedented broad coverage of the underlying physics and the mechanics of solidification—including peritectic and eutectic reactions—and emphasizes material continuity and bonding as a way to create a joint between materials of the same general class. The author supplements the book with hundreds of tables and illustrations, and correlates the science to welding practices in the real world.

Principles of Welding departs from existing books with its clear, unambiguous presentation, which is easily grasped even by undergraduate students, yet given at the advanced level required by experienced engineers. ... Read more

Although I have a strong sciences background and 30 years of engineering experience my area is expertise is well outside of geology and process control chemistry. Therefore, a comprehensive view of the entire processing from geology to gold bar is a real treat.
