Product Description

Part of the excitement in boundary-layer meteorology is the challenge associated with turbulent flow - one of the unsolved problems in classical physics. An additional attraction of the filed is the rich diversity of topics and research methods that are collected under the umbrella-term of boundary-layer meteorology. The flavor of the challenges and the excitement associated with the study of the atmospheric boundary layer are captured in this textbook. Fundamental concepts and mathematics are presented prior to their use, physical interpretations of the terms in equations are given, sample data are shown, examples are solved, and exercises are included.

The work should also be considered as a major reference and as a review of the literature, since it includes tables of parameterizatlons, procedures, filed experiments, useful constants, and graphs of various phenomena under a variety of conditions. It is assumed that the work will be used at the beginning graduate level for students with an undergraduate background in meteorology, but the author envisions, and has catered for, a heterogeneity in the background and experience of his readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Stull's Introduction to Boundary Layer Meteorology is a classic text that remains as valuable today as 20 years ago when it was first published. It is by far the most comprehensive and accessible text of it kind. Whether you are interested in the underlying physics of boundary layer processes, measurement techniques, or analysis methods, this book is indispensable. It should be on the shelf of every graduate student seeking to understand boundary layer processes and in the reference library of every scientist whose work touches an atmospheric processes near the ground.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lost is transit?
I understand things get lost in the mail. What I don't understand is why this seller doesn't have the shipping number so that I can track my package or give me updates on when it has been shipped.Giving me a two week window with the final possible arrival date 3 and a half weeks after my purchase was made without any kind of updates of any kind is not acceptable.I got a full refund and they were helpful but they need to fix the way the inform the buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars For advanced students
Very comprehensive book, cover all the important topics in Boundary Layer phenomena's: friction - turbulence - stability -fluxes- advection of atmospherics' variablesetc' . It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics and Calculus (including several variables, vector calculus and partial derivative) I think its excellent book in a fair price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hammer!
R. Stull makes a comprehensive and profound review of the boundary layer meteorology in his book.I consider this book to be a most useful tool for any scientist concerned with the troposphere, for all environmentalengineers having to do with air quality, and for all micrometeorologists. Just like a hammer! One of the first to get for one's library.Itcontains the general descriptions of the usual subjects, thoroughly andwell explained. Then it also contains extensive descriptions of differentmodels used to make calculations. This is why I am willing to pay its...unfortunately not-very-low price. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it unless you have to!!!
As a college student I was forced to buy the textbook per my professor's curriculum and request. He often cited inaccuracies claiming he often had called the publisher to complain. The answers to the review questions (at the end of the chapters) were very challenging to find within the chapter. It's rough reading (I love to read and read often.) Unless you are required to buy the book, DON'T! I hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best intro to meteorology out there
If you are looking for a nice intro to weather or even a nice thorough review then this would be the book for you. Clearly defined and many illustrations available to help you grasp the info without reading it over several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory weather text.
Lutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I used this text for a weather and climate class I taught and would use it again. ... Read more

This book is so cool.Things that I always wanted to know and not take a specific class for Meteorology.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Washout
The purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web.I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it.A tempestuous disappointment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Excellent, Updated View of Meteorology
This book is really much more than simply a discussion of mountain weather. This book introduces the layperson and professional alike to the complex interaction between terrain and the atmosphere, both on the global and regional scale. In a clean well written manner, with lots of informative graphics, Whiteman goes beyond many of the simplistic coffeetable books, but never leaves understanding and clarity behind.

This book goes a long way to introduce the public to a New Meteorology - one in which airflow is understood not to behave like water, but a new realization that even a simple breeze around a hill can exhibit complex eddys, counterflows, and dynamic reactions to the surface.

This work demonstrates the value of a Meteorology that combines a new geophysical understanding with real world applications in firefighting, pest control, environmental preservation, land management, and I dare say, field geology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference
This book is well written. It is a useful reference for those who forecast for mountainous locations. The book is organized in small, discrete sections without lots of unneeded derivations. Lots of useful graphics and illustrations make this one of the most used books on my shelf. It is also quite useful for teaching others how weather is modified by terrain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Mountain Meteorology
I am a professional Certified Consulting Meteorologist and I found this book exceptionally well written and informative. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Weather Information
This was recommended reading for a certificate course that I was taking through the University of Pennsylvania. This book covers the fundamentals of Weather in plain English and even with some humor thrown in.Easy to follow it makes a great resource for anyone learning weather or folks trying to increase their breadth of knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars A World of Weather: Fundatmentals of Meterology
Boring chapters. Labs are to long and very repetitive, but it makes for an easy class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Learning
I am having fun with my Oregon Scientific weather station, but I wanted to be more informed about the data my weather station provides and be able to apply what I see on my weather station to what I see out my window. This book has helped a lot.I find the lessons I learn in the text are very practical. And, several times while reading and learning, I express out loud, "This is awesome." (Usually, no one is around when I burst out in this glee :)).I find one major disconnect though.I am a middle aged person who just enjoys learning new things, keeping my mind active and find weather watching a valuable diversion from my regular occupation.I bought the book to learn.I am interested in the story problems to solidify and confirm my understanding of the material. But, there is no answer key in the book to the problems.I checked some of the web based locations in an attempt to find an answer key, but to no avail.I will keep looking. There is an obvious attempt to make the text light and interesting using dry humor geared to people under about 25 years old. It is easily glossed over by the older, objective thinking reader however, and the science is substantive. I would recommend the book, but I sure want to find the answer key. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents the theory and applications of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. It is written for graduate students and researchers in the fields of meteorology and related sciences. The book begins with important basic definitions of the radiative transfer theory. It presents the hydrodynamic derivation of the radiative transfer equation and the principles of variance. The authors examine in detail various quasi-exact solutions of the radiative transfer equation and give a thorough treatment of the radiative perturbation theory. A rigorous treatment of Mie scattering is given, including Rayleigh scattering as a special case, and the important efficiency factors for extinction, scattering and absorption are derived. The fundamentals of remote sensing applications of radiative transfer are presented. Problems of varying degrees of difficulty are included at the end of each chapter, so readers can further their understanding of the materials covered in the book. ... Read more

Product Description

From low humor to high drama, TV weather reporting has encompassed an enormous range of styles and approaches, triggering chuckles, infuriating the masses, and at times even saving lives. In Weather on the Air, meteorologist and science journalist Robert Henson covers it all—the people, technology, science, and show business that combine to deliver the weather to the public each day.

The first comprehensive history of its kind, Weather on the Air explores the many forces that have shaped weather broadcasts over the years, including the long-term drive to professionalize weathercasting, the complex relations between government and private forecasters, and the effects of climate-change science and the Internet on today’s broadcasts. Dozens of photos and anecdotes accompany Henson’s more than two decades of research to document the evolution of weathercasts, from their primitive beginnings on the radio to the high-gloss, graphics-laden segments we watch on television every morning.

This engaging study will be an invaluable tool for students of broadcast meteorology and mass communication and an entertaining read for anyone fascinated by the public face of weather.

Product Description
Between 1800 and 1870 meteorology emerged as both a legitimate science and a government service in America. Challenging the widely held assumption that meteorologists were mere "data-gatherers" and that U.S. scientists were inferior to their European counterparts, James Rodger Fleming shows how the 1840s debate over the nature and causes of storms led to a "meteorological crusade" that would transform both theory and practice. Centrally located administrators organized hundreds of widely dispersed volunteer and military observers into systematic projects that covered the entire nation. Theorists then used these systems to "observe" weather patterns over large areas, making possible for the first time the compilation of accurate weather charts and maps.

When in 1870 Congress created a federal storm-warning service under the U.S. Army Signal Office, the era of amateur scientists, volunteer observers, and adhoc organizations came to an end. But the gains had been significant, including advances in natural history and medical geography, and in understanding the general circulation of the earth's atmosphere. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a comprehensive survey of the climatology and meteorology of Antarctica. The first section of the book reviews the methods by which we can observe the Antarctic atmosphere and presents a synthesis of climatological measurements. In the second section, the authors consider the processes that maintain the observed climate, from large-scale atmospheric circulation to small-scale processes. The final section reviews our current knowledge of the variability of Antarctic climate and the possible effects of "greenhouse" warming. The authors stress links among the Antarctic atmosphere, other elements of the Antarctic climate system (oceans, sea ice and ice sheets), and the global climate system. This volume will be of greatest interest to meteorologists and climatologists with a specialized interest in Antarctica, but it will also appeal to researchers in Antarctic glaciology, oceanography and biology. Graduates and undergraduates studying physical geography, and the earth, atmospheric and environmental sciences will find much useful background material in the book. ... Read more

Meteorology 2e, is an introduction to atmospheric science for science and non-science majors. The text covers all topics expected of an introductory text, organized and presented in a way that offers the instructor considerable flexibility of sequence.

The authors feel this text is distinctive in three major ways. First is its clear, accurate and friendly style of presentation. Second is the considerable attention given to the process of meteorological inquiry, the thoughts and actions of practicing meteorologists in finding out how the atmosphere behaves. Third is the careful attention to pedagogy. By grouping chapters into units, developing concepts from specific examples to general principles (and not the other way around), engaging the reader in questions, repeating explanations from earlier chapters when a reminder would be helpful, pausing for review several times within each chapter, and in many other ways, the Authors have strived to make the text a powerful learning tool, thereby helping the reader to become an active and successful learner. ... Product Description

This new third edition of 'Meteorology for Pilots' has been modified to satisfy all aspects of the meteorological requirements necessary to be JAR compliant. It also discusses the latest data concerning global warming and its consequences, especially in relation to the El Nino effect. For aviation the study of meteorology provides knowledge and awareness of the atmosphere, which is, after all, the medium within which the pilot works. A proper study of the subject will provide the basis that can enable a pilot to appreciate properly the weather forecast given to him for a flight - and indeed to forecast for himself. Technical aircraft safety is now approaching the highest standards, while safety affected by particular weather conditions remains a large problem. Clearly a proper study of meteorology can only assist the pilot in providing safe passages.
