5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I bought this as a supplement to my Microbiology class and the textbook that was required for the class. This book definitely clarifies things and conveniently organizes the material well. I read this and reference this more than my GIANT textbook! I am very satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
Put it this way. I finished med-school, Internal Medicine residency and have been a hospitalist for three years. I'm going back to training in Infectious Diseases for a fellowship. I have been through bunch of books in my life and can say that this one is a darn good review of Microbiology. The proper topics have in depth review, but it is not too meticulous that you would get lost in bench research type topics. I'm certainly speaking from a clinicians perspective with ID intentions, but in general I have quite an interest in microbiology. I generally recommend it for sure. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This purchase is very smoothly and the quality of the book is pretty good! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microbiology and Immunology Book
I bought this book for my microbiology course and for review for the boards. Before this book, I read Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. While Ridiculous was an entertaining read, but the silliness kinda got in the way of information and the explanations were generally lacking. This book is well organized and the depth is great.I finally figured out what the A and B subunits on the cholera exotoxin are and the fact that that mechanism is not exclusive to cholera. The immunology chapters in the book are equally as good.Ever have any questions about complement or hypersensitivities?Well there is a chapter dedicated to each (albeit, only 3-5 pages). Finally the appendix is very high yield. There are charts that organize organisms by geographic region, foods for food poisoning, animals, and vectors. There is also a section that has a quick review of all the organisms covered in the book. There's a lot of information, so it might take longer to get through than a rapid review book, but started earlier it should be high yield.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
This is a very good medical micro book for someone who needs a reasonable complete and accessible reference. It's not a definitive micro book. It's not "Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple" either.I find micro really painful as a general rule.I'd never sit down and read this book from cover to cover. That said when I need to know about a particular bug this book generally tells me everything I'd want to know in an organized and understandable fashion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars schaum's microbiology study guide
taking online courses, this book helped with more information and quizzes at the end of each chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only study guide you'll need for microbiology
This book was excellent for my undergraduate microbiology class needed for a nursing program. It was by far the best study guide I found and really helped to summarize the information in an easy to understand manner before I tackled the reading in my textbook. It was also a great review for the exams and had lots of questions to test yourself on your understanding of the material. This book really helped make my study time more efficient and I did get an A in my class. There are some mistakes in the book, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.I also used Microbiology Study Guide by Dr. Leonardi, which is excellent, but if you can only buy one study guide, this is definitely the book to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review for microbiology
This book covers a lot of subject area for microbiology. This is a very good reference book. I used this book for my undergraduate microbiology class along with the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers

These 2 books helped me to get an "A" in my class. The second book which I also got on amazon.com is so specific to the type of questions I saw on my test.I was recommended the microbiology study guide by a friend in med school who used it for his USLME exam and found it quite helpful. ... Editorial Review

    Product Description
Maintaining the high standard set by the previous bestselling editions, Fundamental Food Microbiology, Fourth Edition presents the most up-to-date information in this rapidly growing and highly dynamic field. Revised and expanded to reflect recent advances, this edition broadens coverage of foodborne diseases to include many new and emerging pathogens, as well as descriptions of the mechanism of pathogenesis. An entirely new chapter on detection methods appears with evaluations of advanced rapid detection techniques using biosensors and nanotechnology. With the inclusion of many more easy-to-follow figures and illustrations, this text provides a comprehensive introductory source for undergraduates, as well as a valuable reference for graduate level and working professionals in food microbiology or food safety.

Each chapter within the text’s seven sections contains an introduction as well as a conclusion, references, and questions. Beginning with the history and development of the field, Part I discusses the characteristics and sources of predominant food microorgasnisms and their significance. Part II introduces microbial foodborne diseases, their growth and influencing factors, metabolism, and sporulation. The third Part explains the beneficial uses of microorganisms in starter cultures, biopreservation, bioprocessing, and probiotics.

Part IV deals with food spoilage and methods of detection, followed by a discussion in Part V of foodborne pathogens associated with intoxication, infections, and toxicoinfections. Part VI reviews control methods with chapters on control of microbial access and removal by heat, organic acids, physical means, and combinations of methods. The final section is an in-depth look at advanced and traditional methods of microbial detection and food safety. Four appendices provide additional details on food equipment and surfaces, predictive modeling, regulatory agencies, and hazard analysis critical control points. ... Read more

Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide had great questions and answers and helped me pass micro with ease.It showed me what to focus on for class exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for class
I bought this for a micro class, and it was helpful.Easy to use with lots of pictures.I'm surely not a great judge of micro books, but this one was helpful for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology
Good book. Information was easy to follow. But the condition I received it in was terrible. It was advertised as "good" but had writing and marks all over it from head to toe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy book
This book is very poorly written. This book doesn't define terms, doesn't bother to explain things, and just goes into incredible detail on things that leave the reader lost. I've heard it said that it's for a graduate audience. That's no excuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars really detailed book
I was assigned this book in college. It is definitely intense. However, it's intense in a positive way.I have always found microbiology to be one of the most interesting subjects of science.I have always been fascinated by parasites and bacteria. If you're assigned this book in micro class in college--definitely read this book.I also found Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi to be an excellent study guide for test prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much info
Extremely detailed, this book covers much more than MICROBIOLOGY. You can find a complete course of GENETICS within it as an example!
This is a usefull book for undergrad's but there is no chance of being able to finish all of it in an undergraduate course in MICRO.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
The most recent revision of this comprehensive text covers the bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogenic agents that are significant causes of animal disease. The focus includes pathogenic mechanisms and processes in infectious diseases; methods of diagnosis; and principles of resistance, prevention, and therapy.

Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition is now organized in four sections according to the most appropriate methods of instruction. Section 1 deals with the general characteristics of the host– parasite relationship, laboratory diagnosis of conditions involving an infectious etiology, antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of infectious disease.

Sections 2 (bacteria and fungi) and 3 (viruses) present the infectious agents that affect the veterinary species. The chapters dealing with the bacterial agents are grouped mainly by morphology, and their gram-staining characteristics. The fungal agents are grouped mainly by morphologic characteristics (yeast, mold). The viruses are grouped along taxonomic grounds.

Section 4, an enhancement new to this edition, deals with the infectious agents in the context of the host. This section is organized by organ system. Each organ system is discussed first as a microbial habitat, followed by discussion of those infectious agents that mainly affect that particular system.

In addition to serving as a resource for veterinary students, Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition also serves as a convenient reference for veterinarians and veterinary scientists whose main line of activity and expertise is outside the areas of microbiology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Micro courses, not so much for USMLE
Great book. I am only giving it four stars because it's not in board-style question format. For that, just get the Pre-Test Microbiology book and you're covered in all directions. This book is more helpful for testing your knowledge of the characteristics of the microbes, for example when being tested in a Microbiology course. Can't see myself using this for the USMLE (although there are some helpful mnemonics and memory devices/tips highlighted throughout with a USMLE icon) but so far has been helpful in my Micro course (medical school). If I can just remember to use it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Recall
I am horrible at reviews, so bear with me. This is a great book.I used it in school and I now use it at work in my microbiology lab.I work in clinical microbiology and I have access to many micro books in my lab. This book in particular is used so often by my co-workers and myself that it never gets dusty. The organisms are easy to find with the contents and the index. The descriptions for each are excellent containing a colony morphology as well as gram stain description, patient symptoms and possible infections that the microbe could cause. It is easy to read and contains some color photographs of the organism itself, or of the patient symptoms for those who may not be familiar to them. There are some main biochemicals included in the organism description which help with identification. It is basically a review of things, not complete, but it has all of the main things to help jump start your brain and start diagnosis or to just help a student to remember certain facts or characteristics about microbes.I highly recommend this book to students studying microbiology as well as those involved in clinical microbiology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Soil Microbiology, Ecology and Biochemistry, Third Edition
Soil Microbiology, Ecology and Biochemistry, Third Edition by Eldor Alvin Paul

The topics that the editor selected, are well developed and its updated bibliography. This book serves both query for the teacher as the degree and postgraduate student.

    My best wishes

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good text book
This book has some excellent introductory material if you want to learn about soil microbiology. It is nicely organized with chapters (check the table of contents). A very good improvement over the previous edition in that it talks about some of the recent technology such as metagenomics. I would not recommend it as a reference book for graduate students, but a very good intro text book for grad and undergrads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry, Second Edition
Book in very good condition when arrived, was new when purchased.Cost was a little high at 62.00 dollars.Received in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard text for soil microbiology
I was a graduate student in soils and forestry when I took a class in soil microbiology that used this text. It is essentially the gold standard for soil micro texts. It isn't overly technical, but it includes a thorough analysis of the basic concepts needed to understand most aspects of soil microbiology research and application. The book uses mostlyagronomic examples, but there is enough variety of ecosystems to make it useful for those working in forestry, grasslands, and almost any type of soil. Those interested in detailed discussions of molecular microbial methods or biotechnology may be disappointed, but for the general student looking to understand what those billion microbes per teaspoon of soil are doing, this book is the best introduction out there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology for Allied Health
I purchased this for my Microbiology class and found it to be easy read and understanding.I have read other Micro books and this by far is the most informative and understandable text for Microbiology which is a tough subject. It is recommended even if just to use as research.I have kept it for just such a purpose to use for backup.Even if you have to use a different text this one should be alongside it to help you understand what the other books don't explain well.

This is a beautiful text. The pictures are full color, the paper is glossy, the descriptions are concise and clear, and it is not too heavy to carry along. It is well organized.
