The only study guide you'll need for microbiology
This book was excellent for my undergraduate microbiology class needed for a nursing program.It was by far the best study guide I found and really helped to summarize the information in an easy to understand manner before I tackled the reading in my textbook. It was also a great review for the exams and had lots of questions to test yourself on your understanding of the material.This book really helped make my study time more efficient and I did get an A in my class.There are some mistakes in the book, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.I also used Microbiology Study Guide by Dr. Leonardi, which is excellent, but if you can only buy one study guide, this is definitely the book to buy.

A terrible experience.
Chapter 15 & 16 is entirely ripped out of the book. You think something like that would be on the description.

Too Slow
I couldn't tell you how this product looks or even if it is what I need because after the maximum date of promised delivery from Amazon, I have still not recieved it.For this product, make sure you order it about a year in advance, just to be on the safe side. Very frustrating.

Bought it for class
I bought this for a micro class, and it was helpful.Easy to use with lots of pictures.I'm surely not a great judge of micro books, but this one was helpful for me.

Microbiology
Good book. Information was easy to follow. But the condition I received it in was terrible. It was advertised as "good" but had writing and marks all over it from head to toe.

Lousy book
This book is very poorly written. This book doesn't define terms, doesn't bother to explain things, and just goes into incredible detail on things that leave the reader lost. I've heard it said that it's for a graduate audience. That's no excuse.

really detailed book
I was assigned this book in college.It is definitely intense.However, it's intense in a positive way.I have always found microbiology to be one of the most interesting subjects of science.I have always been fascinated by parasites and bacteria.If you're assigned this book in micro class in college--definitely read this book.I also found Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi to be an excellent study guide for test prep.

Too much info
Extremely detailed, this book covers much more than MICROBIOLOGY. You can find a complete course of GENETICS within it as an example!
This is a usefull book for undergrad's but there is no chance of being able to finish all of it in an undergraduate course in MICRO.
It just covers everything and tries to squees all the info within its pages...

Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition is now organized in four sections according to the most appropriate methods of instruction. Section 1 deals with the general characteristics of the host– parasite relationship, laboratory diagnosis of conditions involving an infectious etiology, antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of infectious disease.

Sections 2 (bacteria and fungi) and 3 (viruses) present the infectious agents that affect the veterinary species. The chapters dealing with the bacterial agents are grouped mainly by morphology, and their gram-staining characteristics. The fungal agents are grouped mainly by morphologic characteristics (yeast, mold). The viruses are grouped along taxonomic grounds.

I am sure this is a great text for plant biologists, but personally I found it to be very helpful in understanding some fundamental biology in a different context, e.g. CAM metabolism.I recommend it.

I read another book that was based on classifications of bugs, studied it diligently for a year in med school before finding this text, which is human system based. Love it.

If you think of things in terms of big picture and clinical presentation, this book may be a very big help. And it's super well written. Kind of fun, even late at night.

Great for Micro courses, not so much for USMLE
Great book. I am only giving it four stars because it's not in board-style question format. For that, just get the Pre-Test Microbiology book and you're covered in all directions. This book is more helpful for testing your knowledge of the characteristics of the microbes, for example when being tested in a Microbiology course. Can't see myself using this for the USMLE (although there are some helpful mnemonics and memory devices/tips highlighted throughout with a USMLE icon) but so far has been helpful in my Micro course (medical school). If I can just remember to use it!

I hate memorizing details.This book is perfect for students like myself who don't enjoy endlessly memorizing random details.It has a great question prompt (with the answer across the way on the page) format to facilitate learning and memorization.Very high yield.

Microbiology Recall
I am horrible at reviews, so bear with me. This is a great book.I used it in school and I now use it at work in my microbiology lab.I work in clinical microbiology and I have access to many micro books in my lab.This book in particular is used so often by my co-workers and myself that it never gets dusty.The organisms are easy to find with the contents and the index.The descriptions for each are excellent containing a colony morphology as well as gram stain description, patient symptoms and possible infections that the microbe could cause.It is easy to read and contains some color photographs of the organism itself, or of the patient symptoms for those who may not be familiar to them.There are some main biochemicals included in the organism description which help with identification.It is basically a review of things, not complete, but it has all of the main things to help jump start your brain and start diagnosis or to just help a student to remember certain facts or characteristics about microbes.I highly recommend this book to students studying microbiology as well as those involved in clinical microbiology. ... Very good text book
This book has some excellent introductory material if you want to learn about soil microbiology. It is nicely organized with chapters (check the table of contents). A very good improvement over the previous edition in that it talks about some of the recent technology such as metagenomics. I would not recommend it as a reference book for graduate students, but a very good intro text book for grad and undergrads.

Standard text for soil microbiology
I was a graduate student in soils and forestry when I took a class in soil microbiology that used this text. It is essentially the gold standard for soil micro texts. It isn't overly technical, but it includes a thorough analysis of the basic concepts needed to understand most aspects of soil microbiology research and application. The book uses mostlyagronomic examples, but there is enough variety of ecosystems to make it useful for those working in forestry, grasslands, and almost any type of soil. Those interested in detailed discussions of molecular microbial methods or biotechnology may be disappointed, but for the general student looking to understand what those billion microbes per teaspoon of soil are doing, this book is the best introduction out there. ... I purchased this for my Microbiology class and found it to be easy read and understanding.I have read other Micro books and this by far is the most informative and understandable text for Microbiology which is a tough subject.It is recommended even if just to use as research.I have kept it for just such a purpose to use for backup.Even if you have to use a different text this one should be alongside it to help you understand what the other books don't explain well.
