Editorial Review

Product Description
This multi-volume encyclopedia is organized alphabetically and contains four levels of articles (Introductory, Advanced, Technical, and Case Studies/Historical Interludes) designed to make its content useful and accessible to the widest possible readership.

Introductory articles provide a broad and moderately technical treatment of core topics at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate students as well as scientists without a strong background in the field. Advanced articles, aimed at graduate students and researchers, review key areas of research in a citation-rich format similar to that of leading review journals. Technical articles, written as "breakouts" from the advanced articles, provide more detailed discussions of key concepts addressed in the reviews.

Case studies/biographical sketches/historical interludes provide an opportunity to present successful and/or interesting examples of operations research/management science methodology in practice or in historical contexts. These articles are less technical in nature and aimed primarily at graduate students and practicing researchers. EORMS has also been developed as a dynamic online resource, combining the most useful features of traditional reference works and review journals in a compelling format designed to exploit the full potential of the online medium. Extensive linking to the primary literature and to other online resources such as the Wiley Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, Second Edition further enhances the value of EORMS as a gateway to broader scientific literature. The editorial approach and structure of EORMS ensures the longevity of its content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook Rating
Like all of the texts I have used during my classes; this one is well written and interesting to read.I had initially expected the texts for my classes to be dull, technical, and quite boring to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Student Review
I'm about half way through the book. I will update my review after I finish the book. For a highly quantitative subject matter like operations management, it reads like a history book. For the most part, if you can get through the explanation, you will understand the mechanics of the calculations. The chapters are dense with many concepts and functional formulas and calculations. It even goes into explanation of how to do calculations in excel. However, the book does jump around from topic to topic. You won't have a clear picture of what operations management really is from this book. You will walk away with fragments of knowledge. This book serves as an introduction to decision making, forecasting, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the hard copy!
I bought the Kindle-PC version. It was a major pain in the butt to find the actual page, since it goes by "location".. so Page 16 and 17 could be from Location 4250 to 5380.I highly recommend this textbook.I'm buying a hard-copy to use in conjunction with my job as a Manufacturing Engineer.I don't usually get excited over textbooks, let alone reading and using them. This is like the holy grail of management.

Product Description
Quantitative models and computer-based tools are essential formaking decisions in today's business environment. These tools are ofparticular importance in the rapidly growing area of supply chainmanagement. This volume is a unified effort to provide a systematicsummary of the large variety of new issues being considered, the newset of models being developed, the new techniques for analysis, andthe computational methods that have become available recently. Thevolume's objective is to provide a self-contained, sophisticatedresearch summary -- a snapshot at this point of time -- inthe area of Quantitative Models for Supply Chain Management. While there are some multi-disciplinary aspects of supply chainmanagement not covered here, the Editors and their contributors havecaptured many important developments in this rapidly expanding field. The 26 chapters can be divided into six categories.1. Basic Concepts and Technical Material (Chapters 1--6). Thechapters in this category focus on introducing basic concepts, providing mathematical background and validating algorithmic tools tosolve operational problems in supply chains.2. Supply Contracts(Chapters 7--10). In this category, the primary focus is ondesign and evaluation of supply contracts between independent agentsin the supply chain.3. Value of Information (Chapters11--13). The chapters in this category explicitly model theeffect of information on decision-making and on supply chainperformance.4. Managing Product Variety (Chapters 16--19).The chapters in this category analyze the effects of product varietyand the different strategies to manage it.5. InternationalOperations (Chapters 20--22). 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at trends in SCM at a price
I perused this book- essentially a collection of articles/research papers by the authors that they have elaborated on. The purpose of the book (as presented by the editors) is to look at some of the current research areas in SCM. There are some outstanding chapters and topics in here for those interested in SC research on the Quantitative side. However, this is NOT a qualitative, business oriented book and so certain amount of OR knowledge is required. In fact some of the content is fairly advanced and mathematical and makes casual reading impossible. Serious readers will find much in the book though. My only gripe is the cost- I feel that it's ridiculously high for the type of audience it's intended for - primarily academia. Definitely worth it if you are into research or can afford it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic, Reference, Research on SCM
This is a very expensive book and I don't have for the price-reason. However, I read it cover-to-cover and I found this book is not expensive for its price at all. As you can see from book details, six parts of this book are serious issues of Supply Chain Mamangement (SCM).The first uniqueness of this book is the combination of all six major issues in a single "thick" book.Part 1, basic concept, not only give you the basic idea and definition, but the foundation to understand other related issues of SCM.Part 2, Supply contract, is another uniqueness, since not many books talk about. The value information (part 3) is the bullwhip effect, which you can find in several journals. However, this book talks about the way to reduce the bullwhip effect as well as variation of information. The forth part is the weakest of this book (in my opinion) since it doesn't pay more attention on multi-commodity impact on other areas (which I believe it's very important).Part 5 is quite obsolate (the second weakness), but still great for reference or the first story if you are new to globalization of SCM.The sixth part is the real-meat, particulary Chapter 27.Chapter 27 compiles over 100 literatures in SCM.Over 100 papers are categorized and shown concept/methodology.I found it's very useful for literature reviews or SCM research.Chapter 27 traces back to the first journal before the "name" of SCM was coined.Chapter 23 is another meat of this book, written by Shapiro. The integration of strategics, tactical and operation are well descibed.Shapiro extended the work in this book to his book. This is one of the milestone book in this century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding
If you are into Operations Research / Management Science modeling - this is a must. The most up-to-date and comprehensive source of the supply-chain theory. ... Read more

Product Description
Operations Now introduces operations from a vantage point that encompasses both the entire organization and the broader supply network. The author begins his discussion of operations management by first establishing the goal to which any high quality operation must aspire: the goal of profitability. Operations Now presents operations within a context that acknowledges its interactions both within all functional areas of an organization as well as the supply chain network serving it.Thus, students not majoring in operations management immediately understand why they are studying a subject that had previously seemed to them irrelevant; operations majors receive valuable instruction in how their chosen field affects and facilitates other functional areas within the enterprise and aligns with the overall goals of the organization. ... Product Description

A handbook in the truest sense of the word, the first edition of the Operations Research Calculations Handbook quickly became an indispensible resource. While other books available tend to give detailed information about specific topics, this one contains comprehensive information and results useful for real-world problem solving. Reflecting the breadth and depth of growth in the field, the scope of the second edition has been expanded to cover several additional topics. And as with the first edition, it focuses on presenting analytical results and formulas that allow quick calculations and provide understanding of system models.

See what’s in the Second Edition:

  • New chapters include Order Statistics, Traffic Flow and Delay, and Heuristic Search Methods
  • New sections include Distance Norms, Hyper-Exponential and Hypo-Exponential Distributions
  • Newly derived formulas and an expanded reference list

Like its predecessor, the new edition of this handbook presents the analytical results and formulas needed in the scientific applications of operations research and management. It continues to provide quick calculations and insight into system performance. Presenting practical results and formulas without derivations, the material is organized by topic and offered in a concise format that allows ready-access to a wide range of results in a single volume.

The field of operations research encompasses a growing number of technical areas, and uses analyses and techniques from a variety of branches of mathematics, statistics, and other scientific disciplines. And as the field continues to grow, there is an even greater need for key results to be summarized and easily accessible in one reference volume. Yet many of the important results and formulas are widely scattered among different textbooks and journals and are often hard to find in the midst of mathematical derivations. This book provides a one-stop resource for many important results and formulas needed in operations research and management science applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars production control textbook
Industrial Engineering textbook... The product came on time and was in better condition that noted on the ad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for IE undergraduate level
This book is a nice book for introduction to manufacturing system for undergraduate level for industrial engineer. The book covers Forecasting, Aggregate Planning, Inventory control (certain and stochastic demand), Push vs. Pll Production Control Systems, Scheduling, Facility Layout, Facility Location, Quality control and Reliability. In Forecasting chapter, the book provides a lot of good basic forecasting methods such as moving average, exponential smooting, trend-based method, and seasonal series. In Aggregate Planning chapter, the book covers just the basic concepts and models which can be done better. For inventory control chapters, the book does a nice job and cover a lot of detailed basic models which is a good introduction. In the Production Control Systems chapter, this book also has done a nice job in covering detailed basic ideas of the MRP subject such as lot sizing methods in MRP but JIT section could be done better by adding some more detaile on key factors of JIT's success and the use of time buffer instead of inventory buffer. In Scheduling chapters, the book covers a very basic models for scheduling which is again good for introduction. The rest sections of the book are nicely written with the level of introduction. Overall, this book is good and nice to have. One comment on the cover page is that the formulation for EOQ is very wrong and should not happen for the book on manufacturing system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear, concise introduction into Operations Management
This is an excellent book for Operations Management electives at an MBA level or an introductory text for Operations majors at graduate school (both business and engineering). The book is self-contained and all thechapters can be studied independently. All the basics of the classicalOperations Management are covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Estupendo!
Lo he usado para cursos de administracion (licenciatura y posgrado)y de ingenieria industrial.Resulta muy apropiado para ambos tipos de cursos.Existe version en espanol.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitly one of the best books about operation management
The book provides an easy introduction to the complex area of production and operation analysis. Nevertheless the relevant instruments and solutions in production and operation analysis are covered and the big picture of dealing with production and operations is shown clearly. The clear language, the illustrations and the examples make it a book best suitable for education and self-study. ... Read more

Hardbound. The essays collected in this volume present a broad survey of the state of the art in logistics systems research as viewed by a distinguished group of scholars. The book shows that logistics remains an active, vibrant subject of inquiry. The reasons for this continued development are the following. Firstly, logistic systems are extremely complex with many inherent technical problems, and fundamently new approaches to the subject are frequently arising. Secondly, the practical world of logistics has changed markedly over the past few decades, posing significant new challenges to researchers. This volume focuses mainly on the key developments in the last decade. ... Read more

One of the most pressing problems in today’s health care system is performance evaluation. Performance evaluation in health care goes well beyond financial and efficiently issues directly to matters of life and death. Health Care Benchmarking and Performance Evaluation applies the analytical framework of Data Envelopment Analysis methodology to provide health care administrators with specific benchmarking tools for performance evaluation. Most important, the book provides health care practitioners and administrators with information of what is lacking in specific aspects of performance and then outlines the ways how these performance inadequacies can be improved.Professor Ozcan is a professor of Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Health Care Management Science. He has written a book that will have wide use in the academic and practitioner health care communities. It is a book that will be particularly influential in the application and utility of performance measures in the health care systems worldwide.  ... Product Description

Earned Value Management (EVM) is a project management technique for measuring project progress in terms of cost, schedule and scope, and has developed into a very effective way to uncover performance problems at an early and correctible stage in any given project. From its earliest days as a financial analysis tool in the US in the early 1960’s, it steadily grew in use through the US Department of Defense until it was made the standard measurement for all DoD, NASA, and Department of Energy projects, and was widely adopted by publicly-traded companies trying to comply with the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley ruling calling for greater transparency and accountability. It has also long been used in software engineering projects.

Winning the 2008 Research Award from IPMA for his research leading to this proposed book, author Mario Vanhoucke has surveyed the published literature to find and evaluate the effectiveness of the latest developments (and established practices) in EVM. After first explaining the fundamentals and terminology of the practice, he explores all the latest research trends and then tests them against a group of fictitious projects to gauge their effectiveness, offering general results applicable to a wide set of project types that researchers and practitioners can use to expand their work in EVM-managed projects. With a focus on the simple calculations behind EVM systems, Vanhoucke shows how they can often lead to misinterpretation and frustration and how to avoid common mistakes.

Meant to complement rather than compete with the existing books on the subject, the proposed book deals with the project performance and control phases of the project life cycle to present a detailed investigation of the project’s time performance measurement methods and risk analysis techniques in order to evaluate existing and newly developed methods in terms of their abilities to improve the corrective actions decision-making process during project tracking. As readers apply what is learned from the book, EVM practices will become even more effective in project management and cost engineering. Individual chapters look at simulation studies in forecast accuracy (under nine different scenarios); schedule adherence; time sensitivity; activity sensitivity; and using top-down or bottom-up project tracking. Vanhoucke also offers an actual real-life case study, a tutorial on the use of ProTrack software (newly developed based on his research) in EVM, and conclusions on the relative effectiveness for each technique presented. This will be an important read for anyone researching, using, or studying EVM and will certainly help to push the field forward in the coming years.
