5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
I'm in my second semester of organic chemistry and really struggled the first semester because my prof doesn't ellaborate on anything, likes to keep lectures generalized, and believes it's best that we learn on our own through the book. The $250 book we had to buy for the class is so wordy and poorly organized. We usually have 7-8 chapters on one exam (about every 3-4 weeks) and some of the chapters are 80-100 pages. When I study things I like the text or my notes I get caught up on the little things if it's not neatly/concisely/clearly written. This book is exactly what I love. It uses many colors to perfectly keep things easily readable. I had read hundreds of reviews (I'm not even kidding) about how wonderful Wade's texts are and how he teaches it as if you were a little kid--it's so true. You seriously cannnot read one of his chapters and not understand. I never use my other text anymore even if I know where the info I'm looking for is at. It is seriously one of the best science textbooks I have ever had because of how it's formated. He also has great examples in it that are useful....like ones that are often on our labs and on quizes/exams.The end of the chapter summaries are the best thing too.He literally sums everything up by writing all of the equations so everything is all on a couple of pages.I've photocopied many of the chapter reviews because they're such a concise and clean form of my notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read
This book is nicely written for someone who is not going to be an organic chemist. It is easy to read and understand. One downfall I will mention is that it is so easy to read, students are many times fooled into thinking that they understand the material. But overall, good features including helpful graphics, summaries and examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars ehh, ok.
This seems like a well-organized and helpful book. Even more helpful, perhaps, had I opened it for the class...oops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear to the point
Students in chemistry, this book is clear and colorful to a better understanding of this though class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a help
I bought this book thinking it might be helpful over the course of my Orgo I class, however, this book turned out to be way tooooo Basic to be of any help at all. I also thought that the order and ways which the reactions and concepts were not done well at all. Poor coverage of electrophilic addition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for College Students
This book is great if you are a pre-professional health science major and need to learn the inner workings of Organic Chemistry. It gives you some insight before you take the class on how to succeed in studying in it, so you can make that "A" that your admissions board will be proud to see on your transcript.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book really helped me understand the course by simplifying a lot of the topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry
Had been a while siince i took general chemistry and so found organic a little hard. My professor suggested buying this book it was the best $19.99 that i ever spent. Too bad there was no guide for Organic 2!

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better supplement books...
Needing a supplement to my Organic Chemistry textbook I picked this up, which was more or less a waste. It simply doesn't provide enough to better understand college level Organic Chemistry, maybe High School. It read and felt like a dumbed down bad textbook, with bad attempts at humor thrown in; maybe to dull up the reading. Don't get me wrong there are helpful parts of the book... just few and far between. After my disappointment I picked up Organic Chemistry Demystified, a definite college/grad level supplement which was very good, and the quizzes helped immensly.

5-0 out of 5 stars My organic chemistry teacher recommended it!
This book helped me through the first semester of organic chemistry at college. It was very thorough and helped me with the final. It's a must have for anyone who wants a good useful guide for Orgo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Orgo Review Book of Them All
I am currently taking organic chemistry at Harvard and I was struggling a lot with the class, as a last ditch effort to pull up my grades I decided to get a study guide. I searched through a lot of them but I can tell you that this one is definitely the best. It simplifies even the most complex problems by giving you systematic strategies to approach organic chemistry. I only wish I had bought it earlier on in the semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplemental material for orgo
I wrote a review for Orgo II as a Second Language, and I'll say the same thing about this book:
This book should be required in every orgo class. I've used both semesters (Organic Chem I as a Second Language & Organic Chem II as a Second Language). He does an outstanding job of breaking down incredibly important and challenging concepts, making them understandable, and presenting short problems that help you master (and remember) those concepts. By the end of each chapter you have learned something, and learned it well. These books will make orgo much more pleasant for you and deepen you understanding of it. GET THESE BOOKS.

I & II!

4-0 out of 5 stars Orgo Review Book
I thought this book was great at first. It is really thorough with a lot of concepts that are difficult to grasp, such as resonance structures and naming. However, there were some mistakes in the book. And, it really just drops off after that, barely covering reactions. Instead, the book instructs on how to study the reactions yourself, but does not go through any of them as I had hoped it would. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry II As A Second Language
If you are struggling in your second semester of Organic Chemistry, then this is just the book you need. The way it is written makes it easier to understand the concepts better than any textbook. This book literally saved my life in Organic Chemistry. I highly recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-- better than most textbook explanations
One will find a host of information from a standard Organic Chemistry textbook, but more often, a student shall view these reactions as separate and different and then find the subject overwhelming. Organic Chemistry As A Second Language II is EXTREMELY valuable in that it makes the student see how similar or different the reactions are. It also makes the mechanisms seem very simple-- the electron pushing and diagrams are so easy to understand, and best of all, accurate.

I am unaware as to the quality of David Klein's other titles, but I assure you that this one is a must-read for survival. I had even impressed the professor with a Baeyer-Villiger reaction that she did not cover in class.

Whereas this book has helped me to do well in my second organic chemistry class, I might have done better in my first orgo class had I encountered Organic Chemistry As A Second Language sooner.

Btw I don't know about the other guy, but Klein responded to my email.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry - Short and sweet
This book is extremely helpful and practical. It takes all of the information that you need to know from your textbook and summarizes it very nicely. It gets right to point!Short and sweet! It's like your textbook without all of the fluff. Also, the amount of practice problems are perfect! It follows along precisely with your class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be warned...
I bought another one of the author's titles, from the same publisher, to have something a little smaller to read on the subway rather than pulling out my large textbook. The workable problems and their respective solutions are plagued with errors from beginning to end. I attempted to e-mail and call the author at Johns Hopkins to both bring this to his attention and to attempt to get a corrected solutions set, but to no avail. I feel that posting this is an appropriate warning to students who may actually need to rely on supplemental supplemental material like this to help grasp the material. If his other titles are any indication, I warn you to stay away from this book and seek other material.

Book Description
John McMurry's international best-seller is widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the "what" of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the "why." Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. In this edition, McMurry retains his standard-setting features (including his innovative vertical format for explaining reaction mechanisms) while revising his text line-by-line to include hundreds of small but important improvements. For example, the Sixth Edition includes new examples, additional steps in existing examples, new problems, new phrases to clarify the exposition, and a vibrant new art program. In addition, new icons in the text lead students to a variety of new online resources. McMurry's text is in use at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world, from North America, to the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
I have used this text in my Organic classes and have found it very useful and informative. The author uses clear explanations and examples for all key elements in each chapter. The mechanisms and reactions are clearly described and detailed. Also for every college student the solutions manual reveals it all.It has both odd and even solutions. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all of the exercise problems really follow what you actually get taught in class, but they are still useful.Great text overall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
This seemed like an okay book for chemistry. There were a few things that we covered in class however, that were not in this book, just a couple of reactions.I recommend the book "Pushing Electrons" as a supplement to this to help with resonance, it helped me a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Comprehensive Review
Good Textbook, clear and concise. However, for an advanced student who needs or wants to learn advanced explanations refer to another textbook on occasion. I use this as a reference on occasion b/c it serves my needs just fine, the SOLUTIONS/STUDY Guide manual is a must and gives very detailed explanations of the problems in the text, the manual is EXCELLENT.The strong point of this book are the practice questions which really get you thinking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will not help at all!!!
This book was the required textbook for my organic I and II class...and it didn't help with either. If you didn't understands something the way the professor explained it, the book provided no help. The explainations in it were very short and were of no help at all. Most of the time the examples were too simple to really teach you anything. This is a very elementary textbook, that doesn't seem worthy to me of a place in any college or university.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me!
This text is an easy read, and you will understand the reactions that are given in the text examples. So why the low rating? Organic chemistry is all about "prediction". And when it comes to teaching you how to predict the outcomes of reactions you've never seen before, it is lacking! You can study this text two hours a day, every day, and unless you have an uncanny ability to understand chemistry (I don't)--you will still not have this most fundamental skill you need to succeed.Try "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language".They will have you predicting and understanding Orgo in no time!! This course isn't hard at all- once someone explains it to you properly. David Klein (the author of those two books) does that beautifully. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mind Boggling
I'm using this text for a college course. The pictures are really vivid, have plenty of information. There are plenty of examples. There are answers to the oddly numbered questions, but the even numbered questions (which my professor is assigning) do not have solutions. As a result it is difficult to determine whether or not one is on the right track! Further, the wording on some of the questions is confusing, making it difficult to determine what the given is, and how to find the correct conversions.
Not a bad book, but I'd like to see more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for O Chem!
if you're taking o chem, then you need this book.the summaries are helpful for review of chapters or in the worst case scenario, in substitution of the chapters.but the most important part of this book are the solutions to the problems.the only way you'll learn organic chemistry, like it or not, is by practicing problems.this solutions manual is the only way to know if you're doing those problems correctly - the text book does NOT contain solutions for problems in the book, beside the worthlessly easy ones contained directly in the chapters.in addition to the solution, it contains an explanation for all problems that require one.

THIS BOOK IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!you won't be disappointed.if anything, go in on it with a friend that is also taking the course.you WILL need this book.

Book Description

Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has maintained its place as the premier textbook in the field, offering broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.

The two-part fifth edition has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on Carey 2007
I have been using this book since the first edition, in my postgraduation courses and each time, it is better. The 5th edition introduced aspects that we awere longing for, like, for example, new achievements in the area of aromaticity and improvements in the first chapter. The best improvement was attached to problems solving (despite being not so friendly) and 3D figures. A CD should be added to the next edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Undergraduate text
This text is good for an advanced undergraduate course. It is a pretty good reference, with two major problems:

1)The book is a flimsy paperback.Other paperbacks I have can withstand usage just fine, but after 1 month the text was in two pieces. It feel apart at the binding.I never even brought it to class, it sat on the bookshelf and fell apart after twice a week readings.

2)The solutions are presented as references to journal articles.I am not too shy of searching for articles, but when you are in a crunch it would be nice to not have to search through 10 pages of tangential information to find the one data or conclusion you need in order to verify the accuracy of your work.

Besides for that, it worked just fine for my advanced undergrad course in physical organic chemistry.I did have to make frequent references to other sources for more in-depth information, but when study time came it worked better than the myriad organic texts available at my library.

2-0 out of 5 stars save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn
This book is written at the undergraduate level. The figures are a joke. It's a paperback and will fall apart. If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead. It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update of a Classic
This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The core of the book is still an excellent survey of older literature and of enormous use to students. There are also many excellent problems.Unfortunately, there is not as much new material or references in some sections.I found I had to frequently supplement the text with current readings. The use of modern theory is especially lacking. ...

Among the changes: Updated material reflecting advances in the field since 2001s Fourth Edition, especially in computational chemistry; A companion Web site provides digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity; Solutions to the exercises provided to instructors online.

The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. Part B describes the most general and useful synthetic reactions, organized on the basis of reaction type. Together with Part A: Structure and Mechanisms, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5th Edition Misses the Mark--Loaded with Errors
This review is specifically meant to refer to the latest edition (5th ed.) of this book. The earlier editions were quite good, but the 5th edition completely misses the mark.Ordinarily, one would think that a book such as this would get better and better with each new edition. Not so with this book. For some reason, the 5th edition is loaded with mistakes.....many of these appear to be typesetting errors (e.g., atoms in the wrong place, pentavalent carbons, nonsense intermediates within reaction pathways, etc.).It is terribly disappointing.I do not know what happened at the publisher this time, but, in good conscience, they really should not have released this book the way it is.It does not appear to have been the authors' fault, but rather it was likely the fault of Springer (the publisher). This looks like an example of the mindless side of capitalism....large publishing companies who have already taken over much of their competition also have ridiculous deadlines to meet quarterly earnings goals, so they rush through the publication process and end up turning out garbage. The only way that these companies ultimately avoid getting into a heap of trouble with the FTC or other consumer advocate agencies is by issuing online addendums filled with corrections to the myriad of errors. Ask yourselves, is that why you want to buy a new book..... so that you have to download a 50-page corrections addendum to fix all of the errors that the publisher missed or opted not to correct in the first place? This sort of thing is happening more and more these days in the publishing industry, even with software. And the larger and larger these publishing companies become, the more we see it. I recommend that you DO NOT BUY the 5th edition of this book; it should have been recalled by the publisher, and everyone who bought it should have received a refund. However, if you really want to buy Carey and Sundberg's book, then buy the 4th edition used; you will be much happier.Apparently, Springer scaled back on qualified staff and/or hired a bunch of publishing flunkies sometime between the release of the 4th and 5th editions of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This is probably the most comprehensive text book available for Organic Chemistry, Develops largely on the Part A of the book. So for a complete understanding you need to possess the Part A of the book. Largely covers the topic of Synthesis and Reactions which is an important part of the Graduate education in Organic Chemistry. Earlier editions of the book cover the same material and are almost as good as this one but each topic in this edition builds up with a different approach of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry.
The references provided in each chapter ensure the complete and total understanding of the subject and help in the student in research.
Overall a great book for the Graduate student in Organic Chemistry.

many thanks for your that effort , the book is good and come to me so fast

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing reference
This book is not for introductory organic students. It is a condensed review with some explanation for a huge number of synthetically useful organic reactions. It explains exactly what it needs to, with diagrams when necessary. This book has been extremely useful in my graduate level organic classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing I ordered for school
This guide got me through organic chem, I only wish I'd bought it earlier in the semester and I might have four-pointed the class. Great idea if you're having a hard time studying by lecture alone. Gives very simple, concise summaries of concepts with lots of examples and diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for orgo students!
This book simplifies the many aspects covered in "Fessenden & Fessenden" book, and the rxn's at the end are extremely helpful to study for exams. Unfortunately, this book doesn't really get into nucleic acids, but it does a great job covering all functional groups synthesis & rxns!A key book for reference as well as explanations regarding intermediates for rxns.A+

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with 1st edition
This study guide/solutions manual matches the first edition of Organic Chemistry.Questions have been changed, rearranged, and added in the second edition, and the guide isn't nearly as useful or easy to use with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well explained, to the point, and thorough.A must have for the textbook.
Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.

In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook.

This is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy.I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly.Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!

It's expensive, but it's worth the money if you use it properly.I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Opinion
I benefited from this book immensely. If you are taking this class do yourself a big favor and buy it. If you are going to do something do it right and working the problems is the key. I got it for around 30$.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a better editor
I bought this book along with the Bruice text for the organic class I'm taking right now. A solutions manual is indispensable for checking the answers to the problems you do - so I was going to buy the book anyway.Problem is, it looks like this solutions manual is the solutions manual for the 5th editon, only with a new cover so it looks like it's for the 6th edition. This would be fine, except that the problems in the 5th edition are not the same problems used in the 6th edition.I'd say that 90% of the time, the solutions manual is right - but is 90% good enough for people who are trying to learn the subject, and just end up getting more confused by a solutions manual with solutions for the wrong problem??I think the publisher should offer a correct copy free to anyone who shelled out $88 for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another solutions manual.
I feel that this book is fine for a reference to the text book problems. The only complaint is that going through nearly the first half of the book, I have found a few minor typos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book by Bruice!
I'm an advanced physics student, and decided to take organic chemistry since i was curious about reaction mechanisms.I must say, i was very satisfied with the book by Bruice. The mechanisms were very detailed, and the book seem to go into a little more detail than most books that i had looked at.I loved my organic chemistry class and although found it much easier than physics, it had it's challenging areas....and Bruice's book help me understand these challenging areas.in the end, i highly recommend this book if you want to understand organic chemistry at a much more detailed level. ... Book Description
The Ninth Edition of Organic Chemistry continues Solomons~Fryhle's tradition of excellence in teaching and preparing students for success in the organic classroom and beyond.

Students are often overwhelmed by the early rigors of organic chemistry. Solomons~Fryhle prepares students for these early rigors by introducing acids & bases--topics they know from general chemistry--early, followed by chapters on structure and stereochemistry. Next, a discussion of ionic reactions gives students a foundation for the vast majority of reactions that they will encounter. The Ninth Edition continues to introduce IR spectroscopy in chapter 2 (after functional groups) and Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy in chapter 4, providing synergy with most lab courses and, again, reinforcing learning.

The new edition of Solomons~Fryhle also has a completely revised WileyPLUS course to help students and instructors reach their full potential. WileyPLUS provides instructors with the most robust online homework solution in organic chemistry. This revision of WileyPLUS meets students where and when they learn and provides them with a learning platform that offers real learning solutions that complement their approach to managing and mastering organic concepts. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic and Lacking
I am in a first semester Organic Chem class. My teacher does not like this book, but it is required at the university (due to a recent switch from Wade). I purchased it along with the solutions manual and to tell you the truth, this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used (after taking multiple Engineering courses in math, physics, chemistry, biology, biomechanics, etc). It touches on everything without ever testing the reader on it. For example, in introducing the conformations of alkanes, it never asks the reader to explain anything through Newman projections. Well, given that my lecture consisted of two lectures doing this to explain cyclohexane/pentane conformations, I'd say this is fairly important (this is not just my class, either, this seems to be the trend). Regardless, the problems are absolutely insulting--draw all 8 isomers of C4H10O2 is the book's idea of a good problem. Sounds rather lazy to me. When will I ever need to draw all of those isomers? That's what so many problems, especially the in-text ones, consist of.

My real motivation for writing this comes from my use of the Wade Organic Chem textbook--for only about 2 hours. It is 100% head and shoulders above this book and I have purchased it along with its solution manual to use for the rest of this course and the next. I have no idea why we switched, but I will still be using Wade.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good enough - undergrad review
This is a basic text for organic chemistry. Alot of the review questions seem TOO hard and there arent enough details in the solomons and fryhle answer manual. Chapter 5 is explained terribly and I dont like the nucleophile/substrate way of learning. I prefer the nucleophile/electrophile way of learing in the orgainic chemistry by Seyhan Ege. I believe this book to be superior in most ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
GREAT BOOK! If your professor chooses this book, you are really really lucky. I am a second year college student, and I am half way into the semester. To tell you the truth, the professor told us that after using this book, the overall scores on exams went up higher than previous years. I myself was horrible at the orgo part of general chemistry. However, after using this book to study, I'm currently acing orgo!

This is a great book, has detailed explanations, clear and easy-to-understand illustrations, and VERY HARD review questions. If you want to get good at organic chemistry, this is the book to get even if you are using another book!

3-0 out of 5 stars which organic chem book to buy?
OK, so you're considering which book to get for 2 semester intro organic chemistry. Just buy the required text for the course, right? well, maybe.

You should know there are 2 basic approaches to the teaching of organic chem: The functional group approach and mechanism approach. By far, the former is much more commonly used and the way organic chem has been taught for decades. The problem is this approach promotes tedious memorization and you can be overwhelmed by the volume. Also, most organic chemists don't think in terms of functional groups. They understand their subject by organizing/systematizing reactions according to mechanism and reaction type as governed by a few basic principles.

The number of books that support the rxn./mechanism approach are few in number. They are (this list may be incomplete):

Organic Chemistry by Marye Anne Fox, James K. Whitesell (ISBN 0763721972)

Organic Chemistry by Clayden, Greeves, Warren, Wothers

A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry (6th Edition) by Peter Sykes

A Primer to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry by Peter Sykes

Organic Chemistry by Joseph M. Hornback (ISBN 0534389511)

----------------------------------------------

For the the functional group approach:

Just based on its sheer size and completeness, the best book has to be Organic Chemistry (now in its 6th Edition) by Morrison & Boyd (ISBN 0136436692). It's the gold standard by which all other functional group books are judged.

2nd best is probably Organic Chemistry by G. Marc Loudon (ISBN 0195119991).

All the rest - Ege, McMurry, Solomons, Wade, Carey, Bruice, Vollhardt, Maitland Jones Jr., Streitwieser/Heathcock, Brown/Foote - they're just carbon copies of one another. The exceptions might be Bruice and Jones Jr. which employ a quasi-mechanism/functional group approach.

--------------------------------------------

For those of you who want to start off with "just the facts" before tackling these organic tomes try: "Organic Chemistry: A Short Course" by Hart/Craine/Hart/Hadad now in its 12th edition.

The 2 books by David R. Klein are also recommended: "Organic Chemistry I as a Second Language: Translating the Basic Concepts" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language: Second Semester Topics".

Another good intro: The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry: A Student's Guide to Success by Joel Karty

For the lab portion get "The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual: A Student's Guide to Techniques" by James W. Zubrick

Check out my other reviews for other chemistry books.

P.S. I should really be mentioning Solomons since I am "reviewing" his book. It's very average and middle-of-the road. there. done. ... Read more

Book Description

This innovative book from acclaimed educator Paula Bruice is organized in a way that discourages rote memorization. The author’s writing has been praised for anticipating readers' questions, and appeals to their need to learn visually and by solving problems. Emphasizing that learners should reason their way to solutions rather than memorize facts, Bruice encourages them to think about what they have learned previously and apply that knowledge in a new setting. KEY TOPICS The book balances coverage of traditional topics with bioorganic chemistry, highlights mechanistic similarities, and ties synthesis and reactivity together–teaching the reactivity of a functional group and the synthesis of compounds obtained as a result of that reactivity. 4-0 out of 5 stars 2 day service
Received book in 3 days but paid for 2 day service. However, item was exactly what was stated. The one day did not make that big a difference but was a little irritating.Book was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book.I love it.
that is a nice book. it was in the paper box shiped on time and quickly .

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid organic chemistry textbook
My assessment of this textbook is based upon concurrent usage of the solutions manual.

Paula Bruice does a great job in presenting organic chemistry.I had virtually no knowledge of organic chemistry when starting the academic year, and felt I had a solid understanding of it at the end of the year.I obtained As both semesters, even though one of the professors only loosely followed the material in the text. However, the text was of sufficient quality that I was able to understand the material the professor presented by relying almost solely on the text.

I prefer to learn things by reading and studying alone.I used this text with solutions manual almost exclusively. The author's presentation of subjects is logical and progressive. There are many worked problems within the text, and the solutions manual has fully worked solutions to the problems.Additionally, there are review subjects within the solutions manual to cover subjects that are not properly organic chemistry, but must be mastered to understand organic chemistry.

The key to getting the most from this text is to work the problems at the end of the chapters.Paula Bruice does not present problems that were not covered in the chapter. Thus, if you read the chapter, you'll see the concepts in the problems at the end of the chapter.Where you have gaps in working the problems, you can readily fill the gaps by checking the solutions manual.Read the text, work the problems, you'll learn organic chemistry.

As a final note, there is a web site to accompany the text.It isn't great, but I think most such web sites are deficient.Nevertheless, it was sometimes helpful when I simply couldn't grasp a concept. It is probably the best web site to accompany a text I've seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very understandable org chem book
Bruice's way of writing is what separates this book from other texts such as Mcmurry. She conveys complicated ideas in very plain english. Futhermore, the illustrations in this text are superb. The book's clean and spacious format also translated to better brain studying conditions (esp. for OC people like me).

3 cons:
No access number for the book's site
Very expensive (unavailable locally [Philippines])

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is very complex for an intro organic chem text

5-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook
John McMurry of Cornell University did again a very good job as he brought the good level of knowledge of organic chemistry with right links to the real world in traditionally (for McMurry's books) very high level textbook which is well readable, has good part of problem solving guide and which is in my eyes a book which was needed just today. I can suggest the textbook to every student who wants to get basic knowledge of organic chemistry in a simple and easy way.
Very good 3D models, mostly with electronic or charge densities (it looks as if from Wavefunction kitchen) are good tool for understanding the spatial construction of molecules, i.e. their conformation and configuration. Book has very good connotations to life (illicit drugs) and environmental problems (energy and fuel). Also the summaries after each chapter followed by exercises as well as the reviewing chapters are excellent features of good teaching. Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter after each new concept to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.

In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook (this is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy).

I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly.Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!

I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text with the solution manual.
